2 Playground Games (or hall games if weather is inclement) Here the children will play games that will help them consolidate key vocabulary while also becoming aware of games played in schools in Spain. What you will need: Resources CD: Templates for coloured spinners – Colour sheets – Spanish playground games – Words for colours – Words for numbers 1 to 10. Songs/Sounds CD: Correct pronunciation for numbers (1 to 10), track 10 and colours, track 11. Hopscotch The children play the game as normal but have to say/repeat numbers in Spanish. Play the track for number practice 1 to 10 and use the words for numbers from the Resources CD. Corners Use the colour sheets and spinners’ templates provided on the Resources CD. Play track 11 for colour practice. The children stand in the middle of the playground. The teacher asks them to walk quickly to a corner that has a predetermined colour assigned to it (red, blue, green, yellow, white, orange, brown, grey, pink, purple, black, beige). See sound CD for quick colour vocabulary and sound tracks references on page 7. The teacher/adult spins one of the spinners; whichever colour it lands on those children are out. This activity needs to be fast paced so as not to have the children sitting/not engaged for long periods of time. This activity will consolidate the names of colours in Spanish. Statues Mark an area where the children can play. A child faces the wall and counts to 5 (in Spanish). He/ she turns quickly and if he/she sees children moving he points and calls ‘out’ and they leave the game. The first to touch him/her without being caught out is the winner. A fast pace is required here too. Number consolidation. Spanish playground games: Arancha, de qué color and ¿A qué hora vienen los Reyes Magos? See Resource CD. What you will need: Resources CD: Spanish flags (on yellow background) with single letter on back – Picture clues sheet – Words for places in school – Images for places in school – Image and words for places in school – Templates for posters. Song/Sounds CD: Correct pronunciation for places in school, track 3. Prior to the activity the teacher needs to place the flags, which have a letter on the reverse, in a prominent place within seven rooms in the school. The teacher also needs to circle on the picture clue sheets, in the correct order, the place/room in which the flag/letter is to be found. The children are given the picture clues sheets to go on their treasure hunt. The teacher will need to introduce the Spanish words for places in schools using the images and words provided on the Resources CD. During the day, small groups of children will follow picture clues that will direct them to various rooms/places around the school. In each place they will find the flag and on the reverse a letter which they need to write down. They will then go to the second picture clue on their sheet, this will direct them to the next room/place where they will find the next flag and the next letter and so on. The children return to class and work out the treasure word. Class prizes could be given if the children arrange the letters in the correct order and correctly identify the word. The letters, when found in the correct order say ‘school’ in Spanish: ‘escuela’. At the end-of-day assembly some of your children may be asked to say in what rooms they found treasures and what objects they saw. Please try and encourage your children to pronounce the rooms carefully and correctly. Use the ‘posters’ (available in A4 size but you could enlarge them) available in the resources CD and display them around the classroom for practice during the day. © Copyright La Jolie Ronde Ltd. 2011.
