All Catholics who have reached their
14th birthday are bound to abstain

Friday. Fasting means limiting oneself to a single
full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two
other light meals, which together do not equal a full
meal, may be taken during the day.

Good Friday Collection
On Good Friday, our parish will take up the annual
Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. Each
day, the news reminds us of the violence and
instability plaguing the Middle East, but we rarely
hear of the shrinking Christian community there, a
community that struggles to remain in the land of
Christ's birth, death and resurrection. Please help
support our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land
by giving to the Good Friday Collection. This
Pontifical Collection allows the Franciscans and
others to continue caring for Christianity's holiest
sites and for God's people in the Holy Land. Please
be generous.

Dear Parish Family:
This weekend, Palm Sunday weekend, is special in so many ways. Our “exile in the Parish Center is over and this is
the first Sunday that we are back in the Cathedral with its refinished pews and new kneelers, freshly painted interior
and new flooring. It is the first Sunday that the Word of God is proclaimed from our new ambo and we gather
around our new altar to be fed and strengthened with the Body of Jesus. It is a special weekend and I express my
grateful thanks for everyone for your patience over these past several months. On behalf of those who will benefit
from the work that we have done, I especially thank everyone whose generosity has made our hope a reality. It
would not have been possible without you.
Being back in the Cathedral is not the only reason, of course, that this week is special. It is special also because
Palm Sunday is the start of the most important week of the year in the life of our faith. It is the start of Holy Week.
On Thursday of this coming week we enter the Triduum (“three days”).
With our Mass on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. the church begins a time of prayer and fasting, a time of keeping
watch. The washing of the feet (mandatum) is a direct expression of our service to one another and the world,
through the Eucharistic banquet itself. At the end of Thursday evening’s Liturgy of the Lord’s Supper, the Eucharist
is brought, in procession, to an Altar of Repose that is set up in the Msgr. Kelly Parish Center. All those at the
liturgy are invited to be part of this procession. The Center will be open until midnight for people to spend some
time in silent and prolonged adoration of the wondrous sacrament that Christ instituted on the First Holy Thursday.
On Good Friday, the Mass is not celebrated. We gather at 3:00 p.m. (repeated again at 8:00 p.m.) to hear the
passion proclaimed, adore the cross and receive Holy Communion that was consecrated the day before. Although
the cross is carried in most of our processions at Mass, it rarely receives the attention we give it at the Good Friday
Service. We are especially mindful on this day that it was by the cross that Jesus redeemed the world. During the
3:00 p.m. service, we will silently adore the cross that has been placed at the steps of the sanctuary; at the end of this
liturgy people will have the opportunity to individually venerate this cross.
The church gathers after sundown on Saturday (8:00 p.m.) to keep vigil and celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection.
Because it is a different liturgy from all other days during the year, the vigil liturgy is not celebrated at 5:00 p.m.
like our other vigil Masses. This service begins in total darkness with the lighting of the Easter candle and soon
darkness is no more. We sing, we pray, and we recount the stories of salvation history. New members (who have
been preparing a long time for this night) are baptized and the sacraments of initiation are celebrated. Together we
celebrate the first Eucharist of the Easter season.
There is sung Morning Prayer on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. These liturgies last about 30 minutes
and focus on the Old Testament Psalms which recall the covenant first made by God with Moses in the desert.
“Together we can do something beautiful for God,” was the theme of our Restoration Campaign. The newlyfinished Cathedral is testimony to what we can accomplish in coming together. Let us come together in prayer and
worship this coming week and enter into the mystery of God’s saving love. Let us raise our hearts and voices to
God this coming week and “together do something beautiful for God.”

Lenten Project
We are one
week away from
Easter. This is a
good time to evaluate our efforts to increase our
prayer, fasting and almsgiving, the traditional
works of Lent. As you know, this year we are
once again asking parishioners to make sacrificial
offerings to Uplift Help International Inc.
a 501(C)3 charitable organization having
established a primary health care center and now
engaged in bringing clean water to the people of
Ishiagu, Nigeria. Special envelopes including a
newsletter describing the mission and its needs
are available at the doors of the Cathedral and in
the rectory. Instructions for returning donations is
in the enclosed letter. Please keep in your prayers
the people of Ishiagu and the volunteers who
bring them the health care and now clean water
which most of us take for granted. “When I was
sick, you took care of me. Whenever you did it for
any of my people, no matter how unimportant
they seemed, you did it for me” (Matt. 25:37-40).

Needed
Mercy Medical Center is in
need of Eucharistic Ministers
to volunteer on a permanent and substitute basis. The
Diocese of Rockville Center Training Program - Session
“A” will take place on April 12th and Session “B” on
May 14th from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Kellenberg
Memorial H.S. Evening sessions are available at
St. Elizabeth’s in Melville with Session “A” on
April 13 and Session “B” on April 27th from 7:00 p.m.10:00 p.m.
If you would like to volunteer for this fulfilling
ministry at Mercy but have no training, you need both A
and B Sessions; which we can schedule for you. If you
are a trained Eucharistic Minister in your parish and
would like to volunteer at Mercy, only Session “B” is
necessary and we can also schedule it for you. In
addition to this Diocesan Training, volunteering at
Mercy Medical Center requires an annual Doctor’s
Health Assessment, Inoculations, Orientation, Training
and I.D. Security Badge.

Knights of Columbus
Annual Communion
Breakfast
On Sunday, April 10th, in the Monsignor James Kelly
Parish Center at St. Agnes Cathedral, the St. Agnes
Knights of Columbus Council #2548 will host a
Communion Breakfast after the 9:30 a.m. mass.
The guest speaker will be Father Tom Moriarty. He is
the pastor of three area parishes – St. Joseph’s in
Hewlett, St. Joachim in Cedarhurst, and Our Lady
of Good Counsel in Inwood. Father Tom is the first
pastor in the diocese to lead multiple parishes at once.
All are welcome to share a delicious breakfast and good
company, while hearing a unique perspective on the
future of parishes on Long Island. In addition, the
winner of The St. Agnes Knights of Columbus
scholastic essay contest will read his or her essay. The
topic is “Discuss the Major Challenges Facing Young
Catholics in Society Today.”
The cost of the breakfast is $20 per person, free for
children 5 and under. We ask that you reserve your
seats in advance for what is sure to be a well-attended
event.

The IRA Charitable
Rollover is back and is
now permanent !
What’s called a rollover is actually a “qualified charitable distribution”
that can be made to our Parish.
If…
1. You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift
2. Your IRA is a traditional or Roth
3. You don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable
distributions
You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal
and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum
distribution (RMD).
The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a
“qualified charitable distribution”. In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple
form.

An 8-week Bereavement Program is planned for

having experience with grieving and group processes,

death of a spouse, child, sibling, relative or friend.

The Long Island Coalition for Life is holding a Good
Friday Silent Vigil on behalf of Unborn Children on
