BUSTED IN PATERSON
A real heartbreaker is Chelsea who may have been used as a breeder. Upon
examination by our veterinarian, all four legs had been fractured at previous
times. It has left her with an unusual gait. She is a mature maiden who gets

Most notable is Aslan who had been bloodied & scarred, laying in a crate.
When an AHS staffer approached the dog, he licked the fingers of his rescuer.
The physical & emotional scars are all gone .. .and he is a trusting & lovable

When Paterson Police arrived at a
home regarding drug abuse, they discovered one of the largest dog fighting rings in N J. Police were met with
blood splattered walls, dead dogs
stuffed in trash bags & starving puppies crammed into crates. Also discovered were 21 pit bulls and 18 puppies
& 3 "maimed" adults -- all crammed
in crates in a dark basement. During
the investigation, a handgun,
$12,000 of crack cocaine, steroids
used for fighting dogs, needles, electronic collars to shock dogs & bloodstained sticks to pry open jaws.

This year, a part of the Farm Bill passed in February is the Animal Fighting
Spectator Prohibition Act. The new law makes it a felony crime to attend an
animal fight or bring a minor to such an event, punishable by up to 3
years in prison & a $250,000 fine.
AHS has several dogs rescued from the horrors that they endured and witnessed. Sadly, they were led like lambs to slaughter & watched as dogs
were brought in for staged fights. One of the long-standing dogfight raids
and rescues occurred last August and pictured are the dogs that are still
waiting for a lifetime of love. All of them were in need of intensive veterinary care.

NOSEY'S ABUSER CITED AGAIN FOR VIOLATING ANIMAL WELFARE ACT
PETA is asking the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC) to deny renewal of permits that would allow
Nosey to give rides. One of her toenails is overgrown creating pain
or chronic foot disease. Foot problems can be fatal in elephants.
A newly-released report reveals the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture has AGAIN cited
Hugo Liebel for denying veterinary care to Nosey the elephant & for failing to protect the public during elephant rides. As of mid-April, Liebel has racked up nearly
200 violations.
The permits for Nosey’s abuser are up for renewal & PETA has intervened & asked
the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to deny the applications
on the ground that the animals’ conditions are unlawful. Liebel has regularly neglected a skin condition that Nosey suffers from for more than 20 years. Nosey had
been chained so tightly that she could barely move. His animals are forced to live in
filthy enclosures & many animals are denied veterinary care. Under Florida law, when
a permittee fails to comply, the FWC must look at suspending, revoking or refusing to
renew his authorization. Dr. Philip Ensley, a veterinarian & exotic animal specialist
told the FWC: “This is the worst, most prolonged, documented example of an uncorrected case of suffering & abuse in an elephant I have ever reviewed.
Other animals have also suffered in Liebel's neglectful hands—the USDA has cited
Liebel for keeping Reggie the spider monkey in "extremely dirty and soiled" enclosures, leaving him tethered dangerously to a pony, and allowing him to escape for six
weeks. In 2013, Liebel was ordered to pay a $7,500 penalty and to cease and desist
from violating the law following nearly three dozen charges of violations of the
Animal Welfare Act.

The AHS has noted the huge number of sanctuaries that
have flourished over the years – and many have been discovered to be cruel, abusive situations that were hell holes
for the animals.
Many pet owners who must relinquish their animals for varied reasons search for a wonderful, idyllic place to leave
them. There are many enterprising people who will take
advantage -- of your money and your hopes -- and the animals are left in disastrous situations.
In our February 2014 issue of the HUMANE NEWS, we listed several “sanctuaries” that were horrific situations. There
are more …. many more.
As soon as people learn of a “no-kill” sanctuary, all logic
and reasoning is thrown out the window. The “no kill” shelters have the luxury of not euthanizing animals … but turn

The sad story that another sanctuary was charged with abuse just didn’t do justice
to the horrifically gruesome existence that the animals endured. Their treatment
can be attested by the pictures of the animals that languished at an animal “hospice and rehabilitation center” run by founder, Susan Marino. She guaranteed a
place in her heart & home for sick pets with costs tied to their care.
Marley required a diaper for incontinence, but diapers were often left on
for 2 days, covering the urine scald underneath.
A cat with nasal discharge in ICU died
2 days after photos were taken. Infections that could have been addressed
were not and cats died unnecessarily.
Sick cats were routinely housed with
healthy cats.
A 4 week undercover investigation by
PETA showed the unimaginable cruelty & heartlessness that words alone
cannot convey. Paraplegic dogs were
left to drag themselves around to the
point that their skin was worn to the
bone – while wheelchair carts hung
from a fence outside. Animals were
either kept in cribs or in overcrowded
rooms that led to fights & injuries.
The Attorney General’s office reviewed
evidence & photos of the animals &
records.
Marino is facing 22 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty charges. As
part of a settlement of a lawsuit, she
was forced to close the facility & for
the next 10 years, is prohibited from
caring for or harboring any animals
other than her own “pets” & from
being an officer/director of an organization that holds charitable funds.
Marino failed to report the amount of
donations she received since 2007.

may be warehoused in cages for months, years … or their
lives. And what happens to the ones turned away??? They
are abandoned, or worse. According to PETA, a Pennsylvania man who tried to leave his dog at a no kill shelter was
told to make an appointment and come back in 2 weeks.
The man grabbed his dog, got in his pick-up truck and at
the next intersection, threw the dog out of the truck and
ran over him, crushing the dog beneath his tires. THERE IS
NO EASY ANSWER … including Craigs List. If your pet
were left in the conditions spelled out at some of these
places, it would have been kinder to your pet to bring it to
a humane group who would have the best interest of your
pet at heart. The stories on these two pages are just words
… but the animals suffered intensely; many died.
Napier’s is an animal rescue “sanctuary”
which operated for years with a closed-door
policy. When the most recent investigation
began, the owners were reportedly on vacation. Due to the poor & unsanitary conditions that were discovered, local animal rescue groups helped in removing & caring for
the animals. Newspapers report that there
have been complaints against the non-profit

of New Milford, Pennsylvania are wonderful animal lovers who have been long-time generous
AHS supporters. Each time a new issue of the
HUMANE NEWS is mailed out, our office receives
a flurry of phone calls about some of the orphans
that either the Uggianos may want or pet-owning
friends that may be looking for a lifetime com-
panion. Since Amy & Joe open their hearts &
home to unwanted dogs without regard to
age, many of them are elderly but the couple
sshower them with lots of love for their time
left on earth. Whenever one of their dogs
leaves for the Rainbow Bridge, Amy & Joe will
look for a new candidate to share their bed
.… & board.
Gizmo & Oreo were included on the Share-APet Program after their North Carolina owner
died & a relative brought them to Popcorn
Park. Joe adopted the duo & within hours
after arriving at the Uggiano household, we
received lots of pictures from Amy … it must
be a vintage Brownie camera found in the
attic as the photos are not usable. We do
know that Gizmo & Oreo, besides begging,
like to sit by the refrigerator door.
Within a few weeks, Joe visited Popcorn Park
again – without Amy who would adopt many
-- & she gave him a list of what ones to meet.
Rambo, who has been at the Society for several weeks was the lucky fella. On his first night,
he slept near Joe’s neck …. but because of
Joe’s snoring, Rambo traveled to the foot of
the bed to avoid the noisy nighttime snores.
Our thanks to Amy & Joe who have always
opened their hearts & home when a needy
animal arrives.

DOG IMPALED ON FENCE - RESCUED &
ADOPTED TO PENNSYLVANIA COUPLE
Featured on the cover of the April 2011 cover of
the HUMANE NEWS was a yellow Lab Retriever
mix who was discovered impaled on the spearhead of iron rod fencing adjacent to Route 22. It
is theorized that someone had flung the dog out
of the car from the highway & she landed on the
fencing. Thankfully, the iron rod impaled
through her leg & abdomen & did not cause
internal injuries or damage to any vital organs.
There were two large holes in her side where the
iron posts went through her body. After her
wounds had healed, an evaluation showed that
“Marvel” was a trusting & loving dog. She wanted to make friends with people & passing dogs
she encountered. Steve & Tammy Frank of
Easton, PA read about Marvel & wanted to
adopt this lass. She is now named Gracie and
enjoys the canine companionship of Rilee and
Buddy, (another AHS adoptee). The Franks
recently visited two of the Society’s facilities with
40 beautiful dog beds they constructed. Also
donated were a lot of treats and other donations.

kennels, there might be a new addition to the

SOCIETY RESCUES ABUSED PUP - NOW
LIVES A "SUGARY" LIFE IN VERMONT
The AHS Newark facility is an inner-city
shelter & we always receive very interesting & unique cases. In mid-January, a
visitor arrived at closing time in a taxi –
somewhat inebriated – holding a pup.
The man said that the pup had been
dropped on his head at home & also
been “pinned up against the wall” by a
dog. The pup’s head was continually
tilted & as the owner showed how the
pup could stand – he dropped him on
his head on the ceramic tile floor. The
AHS staff advised that the pup was
going for emergency vet care & when
we asked for information, the argumentative gent refused to give us any identification including his name or address.
We called the 3 month old pit bull
Forrest. The veterinary service advised
that the pup had suffered head trauma
which can last days … weeks … or even longer. We kept him in the Administrative
Offices where he got lots of exercise, love and lots of treats. The Society received a call
from a wonderful pet owner in Vermont who drove to New Jersey to provide a loving,
lasting & safe haven. He is now called Wyatt & he still has a problem with depth perception. We have kept the name and town off this article so that there should be no repercussions from the inebriated gent.

Harvey Dent came to the AHS Newark facility after his family could no longer care for him. The 4 year
old was a mixture with some Pointer -- and a whole lot of puppiness!! He was so sweet & playful but
due to his high energy level, he went overlooked by possible adopters for several months.
He was adopted last September by the Aldelizzi Family of Beachwood. A few months ago, we got an
update from his proud new mom that Harvey Dent is doing well. "He is definitely high energy, but we
have discovered some tricks to tire him
out, starting with walking his 'big sister'
to school every day & then a longer
walk with Mom, followed by lots of
playtime & running in our backyard,
mixed with lots of hugs & snuggles. He
loves visiting with other dogs while we
walk & he has had several playdates
with new friends.
He is such a joy in so many ways &
both my daughter & I have become
more active as a result of bringing him
into our family. Not a day goes by that
my daughter doesn't tell me how happy
she is that he's part of our lives. He's a
beautiful, loving, eager to please &
happy dog -- a perfect addition to our
family & we're all so lucky to have
found each other!" Thanks so much to
Christi & Harvey's 'big sister' for giving
him the wonderful life that he deserves!

When she arrived, she was totally
depressed. She wouldn't eat ..... & when
she did, she brought it right back up!
After a short time, she ate well when
offered food. Sadly, she is still depressed.
We call her Miserable Maybelline. We
don't think it would take much to get
her out of the doldrums. A sweet voice
to croon to her, soft caresses to her
long hair, an empty lap to hold &
encompass her ... that is all it would

When his owner fell on rough times, the only
possessions he had were two lovely cats which
our ACO brought in for a new road to happiness. His older sister, Maddison, has gone to a
great new family …. and that leaves Mischief to

Hurricane Sandy left a wide path of
destruction & misery which included
pets. When Violet was at the shelter &
in the aftermath, her family found her
at AHS. She was reclaimed but when
she returned to her home, the other
animals would not accept her & made
her miserable. Violet is about 5 years
old & would love to start all over
again with a brand new family. File

It was last July when an Ocean County resident
found 2 kittens on her property. Both were
medically treated, spayed, dewormed,
microchipped, & tested for FeLV. Her sibling got
adopted but Wendy still waits. Before she celebrates her one year anniversary at AHS, won't

Peggy and Larry, two
potbellied pigs, were
discovered in Sept.
2011 by a Maryland
resident where they
had been dumped in
a fenced-in area of a
park. With much
coaxing the woman
was able to trap
them and brought
them to a small
“sanctuary” where
she believed they
would be well-cared
for. Four days later, Peggy gave birth to four piglets. As it turned out,
“the “sanctuary took care of Peggy’s most basic needs, but not much
else. Two months later, Peggy disappeared and an employee found
Peggy hiding in a distant shed, suffering an injury. Despite volunteer
requests to take Peggy to a vet, no additional care was provided
other than putting her into a small pen. Finally a volunteer convinced
the owner to let her take Peggy to a vet at her own expense where
X-rays revealed her femur was broken in 3 places, possibly from a
mule kick, and required extensive surgery. The owner refused. With
the assistance of the Pig Placement Network, the volunteer managed
to get Peggy relinquished into her hands so she could bring her for
the needed surgery. Dr. Jonathan Bergmann of AHS/Popcorn Park
along with Dr. Kevin Simmons, an orthopedic surgeon, performed the
lengthy operation at Popcorn Park, followed by 5 weeks of rest and
intensive follow-up care. This was followed by
additional weeks of rehab.

WILDLIFE CLUB
Annie the pygmy goat and Peggy the pot-bellied pig both had very difficult pasts, but
for different reasons. Today, Peggy and Annie are happy roommates and enjoy a nice
grassy area where they can munch away side by side. Peggy is new to the Wildlife
Club and in need of loving sponsors, and Annie, of course, would love some, too.
Annie was first named Little
Orphan Annie and her life was
saved in the summer of 2011
by Dr. Jonathan Bergmann
when he was called to help a
goat who was having a difficult
time giving birth. Sadly, neither
the mother nor the two stillborn kids were able to be
saved. Annie was bottle fed by
Dr. Bergmann until she was
stronger, then the mischievous
young lady spent her days in
the camel barn and went home
at nights with John Bergmann,
General Manager of Popcorn
Park. There she got the hang of
housebreaking, following John’s
dogs in and out of the house. Now Annie’s all grown up and enjoying her new best friend,
and hoping you’ll fall in love with her.
Percy is one of several white peacocks who have come to call

sanctuary caters to wildlife, farm animals, exotics and birds that have been
abused, abandoned, exploited, injured, handicapped, etc. The park is open
daily from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. On Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year’s
Day, Popcorn Park closes at 2 p.m. so that staff can be with their families.
Our current admission fee is $5 for adults, and $4 for children under 12
and senior citizens.

$4.00 a month, for which you will receive a color photo of your animal and
an update every 4 months, (which includes a holiday card), a membership

rescue. The two older gents were unkempt but very loving &
friendly to everyone. The groomer had her work cut out for her &
now they are clean, free of mats & feeling soooo much better. The
adorable duo are now ready to meet the public. They have been
waiting almost 2 months and now hope you will come & visit to

An officer from the Essex County Sheriffs
Dept. found this wayward lass in Branch
Brook Park & notified the AHS. It was late
at night & she may have been abandoned in
the well known park. The Shepherd mix is a
friendly young lass who want to start off
life on a new road. File 124593-F.
She was locked in a crate; abandoned, left to starve & eventually
die in the heat. That is where she was found by Mayor Booker who
called AHS to rescue her.

humans & has learned

the corner of a busy Newark street, adjacent to housing projects. No one came
forward to identify or claim them & so
our groomer got to work to give them a
spa day. It has definitely improved their
outlook and all they want is someone to

The evaluator identifies Bobby as a super
sweet goofball! He loves playing with toys
& interacting with people. He has amazing
manners & shares his food willingly. The 1
year old has a deformed front leg that
doesn't impede him at all. He is a happy,

may have had a responsible owner ..... but the
decision is still out on
this one. He is about 3
years old & was rescued by a Newark Police Officer when he was found as a stray. He
was microchipped by a company not well known to AHS. The chip
was inactive ... but the company took our information & said they
would call us back. That was in mid-March. We are tired of waiting

When someone no longer wanted this dog, they deposited him in a hallway at a Newark residence. The young
fella is called Goober, a happy-go-lucky lad who gave a
nice "sit" when presented with a treat. His evaluator said
he learns quickly & is eager to please. When presented
with a toy, he wanted us to play with him rather than
playing with it by himself. Goober would make a great

AHS has been in the midst of rescuing many dogs and cats over the years that
were the victims of the dogfighting world. The ugliness & scourge of this
"bloodsport" isn't a nameless, faceless cruelty.
A young pup came to AHS on January 29th with horrific injuries too graphic
to ever be included in this magazine. What was worse is that the condition in
which he suffered was not given immediate care -- but wherever he was, the
brutalized pup languished for almost 2 weeks before he was brought to AHS.
When we reviewed Vinnie's stories & videos to summarize over 5 months of
treatment and rehabilitation for the Humane News, it clearly reminded us of
the pain, heartache & hopes that Vinnie so patiently lived through.
As our members were eager to learn more, our devoted staff serialized the dayto-day care which includes pictures and videos starting on our Home Page
(ahscares.org) as well as our Facebook pages (Newark Associated Humane &
Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter).

the April 28th update. This first half of the video was made a few days after
Vinnie arrived. Some of the images are graphic, but sometimes you have to see
what was, to appreciate what is today. The second half of the video is Vinnie

After all this time, we are still in awe of this young guy. Just when our Chief
Veterinarian, Dr. Laney
Baris, solved one health
problem, another problem surfaced. Dr. Baris
vowed that if Vinnie was willing to fight to stay alive, she would be there
to help carry on the fight. The last of these heartbreaking discoveries
came after weeks of care when two broken hips were discovered. Thanks
to the generosity of supporters to the Res-Q Fund, an orthopedic surgeon
at North Sta,on the other a few weeks later.
Vinnie now enjoys freedom in the giant exercise yard. He is also able to
crawl up a ledge to meet the cats that watch him from an outdoor patio
of free-roaming cats …. no small feat considering he was unable to do
so with his hip problem. Next, Vinnie will have some swimming pool
exercises and a treadmill for his hips.
The veterinary and kennel staff have been there for every problem that
has arisen & for all of his wants & needs. For example, when he needed
a stroller, we obtained one so that he could go outside and enjoy some
sun on his face. Through it all, Vinnie has not expressed anything but a
wagging tail & happiness to have people around him who cared.
We have put a name and a face to the ugliness of the dogfighting world:
Vinnie Van Gogh is now the Invincible Vinnie! A tee shirt is being produced with Vinnie's face & an anti-dogfighting message. They will be on
sale shortly to the public. Any proceeds from the sale of these shirts will
go to the Res-Q Fund to help those that come after Vinnie.

It was by chance that this cat was rescued after she was discovered in downtown Newark with her newborn kitten. Shortly thereafter, 3 kittens came in
that had no mother. She cleaned them off & accepted them quickly.

A look at her serene face & the tranquil setting of her in a bed with her one baby,
told us that she was finally at peace with being at AHS. A check of her records
indicates that she was rescued from among the tall office buildings near Newark’s
Penn Station. What kind of struggle did she experience just to survive another day?
It seems unlikely that any animal can survive the cold, busy streets. Her demeanor
reflects a thankful peace that she is now safe ... for her and her baby. She is a few
years old & life has not been easy. We call her Serenity and whatever life has done
to her has made her appreciate the quiet, safe moments here at AHS. She deserves
a loving & lasting place to call home ... & she will LOVE you for it!
As we go to press, we have rescued 3 young kittens that have been orphaned and
the mother has not been seen. We placed the trio with Serenity who has gathered
them up, cleaned them off and allowed them to nurse. When all are weaned, we
have a space reserved for this lovely lady to go to Kitty City.

PUMPKIN - TREATED LIKE A PARIAH UNWANTED & UNLOVED
When 8 1/2 year old Pumpkin came in our front door and
into our hearts, we didn't know what, if any, part of the
owner’s story was accurate. If their story is true, this
Chihuahua mixture spent her life with her family as an
unloved pariah.
She was surrendered to the shelter because of a skin problem that made her "smell" & they didn't want to touch her.
Aproblem with her eye is dry eye that needs artificial tears.
Every discussion with the owner was an untruth & there was no veterinarian who was familiar with them or
Pumpkin. Although they said she was spayed, our veterinarian did the operation & found it had never been
done. Also a much-needed dental was done.
The sum total of our experience with this person would indicate that Pumpkin existed in a house in which
she was rejected as an outcast to be avoided. There was no demonstrative affection given to her. Pumpkin
has captured the hearts of the staff & volunteers. After a life most likely filled with indifference, Pumpkin is
getting all that loving she's missed. If you are standing, she's up on her hind legs, asking you to pick her
up. If you are sitting, she wants up on your lap. This adorable lass languished without love & acceptance

AHS was called to rescue
a lifeless pup that was
allegedly abandoned on
the front porch of a
Newark residence. The 68 week old pup was
comatose ... but still
alive. Our Animal Control

Veterinary Hospital as an
after-hours emergency.

feeding. Due to his poor prognosis, there were additional health concerns including an upper
respiratory condition.
Since the weekend was starting with less staff available, Dr. Adriana took him home for monitoring and continued care ... and our fingers were crossed. We really wondered if he would
even survive.
By the time Monday arrived, we saw a drastic improvement. What a difference lots of love &
good care can make. The tiny, delicate puppy is thriving under the round-the-clock care of Dr.
Adriana and her canine companion, Wilma!
A few days later, Rusty & Wilma accompanied Dr. Adriana who performed medical duties at
the shelter & on the mobile spay/neuter van. Rusty & Wilma spend the whole day in the
Administrative Offices running the hallways, looking at birds, iguanas, chinchillas & strange
sights they never saw before! But Rusty does not leave Wilma's side ... unless food is in sight.
AND THE BEST NEWS OF ALL!!!
Dr. Adriana is adopting Rusty!! Her family has fallen in love. She says: "He just fits this family
and Wilma just loves him :)" What a great ending ... or should we say: What a wonderful,
heartwarming beginning.
Most times, Dr. Adriana is at her own practice in Linden so we haven't seen much of Rusty &
Wilma. At their last visit, we were advised that Rusty may have a heart problem. Time will tell
& additional tests will be taken when he is about 6 months old.

What a horror this Great Dane endured. Kept
in a small wire enclosure that was cruelly
undersized. The wire injured the eye which
necessitated removal. He was also heartworm
positive which has been treated. Frankie is a
protective fella who needs a chance with the

When people divorce, they usually split the
assets -- but neither wanted the dogs. Cici, a 6
year old, long-haired Chihuahua is deaf, & 8 year
old Paco are bonded with each other. Since Cici
is deaf, as with any disability, additional safety &

understand why he is homeless. The Maltese has been

SWIMMING POOL CLEANERS A DANGER TO KIDS & PETS
For all of those with swimming pools that welcome the visits of kids and
pets, this is a warning. A 5 year old large breed dog named “Stitch”
drank from a swimming pool which had just been cleaned and
“shocked” with chlorine & muriatic acid. Once muriatic acid is poured
into a pool, a certain amount of time must pass before people can go in.
There are warning signs on this product that it should not touch your
clothing, your skin, etc. Stitch immediately started foaming at the mouth
& he was rushed to the veterinary hospital. He stayed for several days
with a poor prognosis. His liver enzymes were very high, and recently he
returned home. Stitch must be on a special food to heal ulcers in his
stomach which had been caused by the acid. It is not known what the
long term damage will be but Stitch is home and doing better.
EASTER LILIES ARE TOXIC FOR CATS

The U. S. Food & Drug
Administration has sent out a
warning that Easter lilies can be
deadly for cats.The same is true
for Tiger, Asiatic, Day, (photo
left), & Japanese Snow lilies. The
entire lily plant (leaf, pollen,
flower) is poisonous. Eating a couple of leaves or licking a few
pollen grains off their fur can
quickly cause kidney afailure. Cat
owners are best not to have lilies
in your home. The plant does not
pose as serious threat to dogs,
but they could suffer if eating
them. If you suspect your cat has
been near the lily plant, get your
pet to the vet immediately.
FEDERAL LEGISLATION
H.R. 4148 (Moran – D-VA) would prohibit the
use of animals in the testing of cosmetics & their
component ingredients. The bill would also
phase out the sale of cosmetic products containing animal tested ingredients. In 2004 the
European Union passed a law phasing out the
use of animals to test cosmetic products & ingredients as well as the sale
of products containing ingredients subjected to new animal tests. Israel &
India passed similar laws in 2007 2013 respectively. Even China
announced plans to phase out mandatory animal testing of some cosmetic products. Contact your U. S. Representative & urge that they co-sponsor the Humane Cosmetics Act.
S.1406/H.R. 1518, Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) would finally amend
the Horse Protection Act to end the industry’s failed system of self-policing, ban the use of devices implicated in the practice of soring, strengthen penalties & make other reforms needed to finally end this torture,
including requiring meaningful U. S. Dept. of Agriculture enforcement.
The bill already has 50 Senate co-sponsors & more than 260 House of
Representative co-sponsors.
HORMONE REPLACEMENT PRODUCTS AFFECT USERS' PETS
For those consumers who use hormone replacement therapy skin creams, it
may have an unintended medical consequence for your pets. The problem
appears to stem from the use by pet owners who use these products in the
form of lotions, gels or sprays. The users then handle & snuggle their animals, unwittingly transferring the drug to the pets. The phenomenon frequently stumps veterinary practitioners & pets may go undiagnosed for
weeks or months. Symptoms include swollen vulvas, abnormally small pensises & fur loss
CAUTION ON TURTLE RELINQUISHMENT PROGRAMS
Beware of “Turtle Relinquishment Programs” at PETCO. Reports indicate this
is a way to solicit free turtles in order to funnel them back into the pet
trade. PETA advises that the turtles are sent to PETCO’s own vendor,
Concordia Turtle Farm in Louisiana, where they export 80% of its turtles
overseas -- mostly to China where they grow larger & then are slaughtered
for meat.
EPA HAS FLEA COLLARS REMOVED FROM THE MARKET…
BUT NOT UNTIL 2016!!
The EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) has announced an agreement with Sergeant’s Pet Care Products & Wellmark International to take
pet collars off the market that contain the chemical proxpoxur. Under the
terms, they can distribute the products until April 1, 2016 … & stores can
continue to sell until all are gone. The collars leave a residue on pet’s fur
that can be absorbed through the skin of children who hug or pet the animal. Children could ingest the chemical if they pet the animal & then put
their hands in their mouths. The Natural Resources Defense Council sued
the EPA & also asked for action on a second flea & tick chemical that the
EPA did not address. According to a veterinary dermatologist at Univ. of
Penn’s School of Veterinary Medicine, products are available thorugh vets &
over-the-counter that come in oral doses or “spot on” the pet’s neck. If your
dog swims every day, an oral product might be best. There is information
on flea & tick chemicals at www.greenpaws.org. “GreenSpace” is a column
about environment and health.

PENNSYLVANIA ANIMAL LOVERS DONATE
HAND CRAFTED DOG BEDS TO AHS
When Tammy & Steve Frank of Easton, PA drove to the Society with a donation, we were surprised & elated with their generosity & talented workmanship.
The Franks made their first stop at the AHS facility to donate 20 dog beds – beds that were handmade
by Steve & Tammy – colorful red canvas with paw prints on each corner ….. and a doggy bone tied to
the bed.
The craftsmanship of this personalized donation was outstanding! Accompanying Tammy & Steve was
their dog, Gracie – a Society alumnus – who had a spectacular rescue. (Please see Gracie’s story on
Page 6)
After stopping at the Newark facility, Tammy & Steve then drove to Popcorn Park where they donated
another 20 doggy beds!!! Our thanks to Steve & Tammy for their love of animals & helping other homeless orphans to enjoy a bit of comfort
while they wait for “a new leash on life”.

CLARA B. WORTH STUDENTS HELP
VINNIE VAN GOGH & OTHER ORPHANS
Popcorn Park Animal Control Officer Maria Cymansky visited with the students and
brought literature & a resident of Popcorn Park. The students listened intently to all of
the stories about animals and she told them it is important to be kind to all animals.

The students at Clara B. Worth School in Bayville donated a huge
supply of dog food, cat food, treats, blankets, toys, cleaning supplies
& so much more! Each student made a get-well card for Vinnie
and they are strung up all around Vinnie 's room.
Students at Clara B. Worth School in Bayville were told of Vinnie Van Gogh’s plight and
his progress by their teacher. Vinnie has had a daily presence on the internet
(www.ahscares.org) and on our Facebook pages & their teacher kept them updated. The
students were so moved by Vinnie’s story that they decided to do something special for
Vinnie and all of the other deserving animals waiting for homes at Popcorn Park.
Animal Control Officer Maria Cymansky visited the students & was overwhelmed with
the love, interest and donations that the students collected for the animals. A huge stack
of “Get Well” cards for Vinnie were made with love by the students. They loaded
Maria’s ambulance with dog and cat food, treats, toys, blankets, beds, cleaning supplies
& so much more. Their hand-made cards were so thoughtful & moved our staff to tears
as they read the heartfelt thoughts that 5, 6 and 7 year olds wrote to Vinnie. Some drew
pictures while others simply said: “We love you Vinnie”. These cards are now hung
proudly in Vinnie’s room where he can enjoy them every day. Truly, they will help him
“get well soon”. Our thanks to all of the students, their parents & their teachers for
thinking of Vinnie, Popcorn Park residents & their needs. Please be assured we are putting all of these donations to good use.

NO ANIMALS USED IN “NOAH”
The treatment of animals during the filming of movies has been a source
of concern by animal lovers. “NOAH” was produced by Paramount
Pictures & Regency Entreprises. The film was written by Darren Aronofsky
&Ari Handel & directed by Aronofsky. What is unique with this film is
that this very popular & celebrated story was done without harming animals. All animals on Noah’s Ark were computer-generated imagery.

The members of Girl Scout Troop 276 of Little Egg Harbor raised
cookie monies for the benefit of Popcorn Park. They purchased cat
food, dog treats, collars and home made dog & cat toys. They have

at hundreds of popular films that feature pets & tells
whether or not any animals are injured or killed in the
film.
The site has a three-part rating system. If a pet appears in a perilous
situation but ultimately comes to no harm, the film receives a happy
dog symbol, (see image at right). Films in which an animal is injured
or appears to die but actually lives earns a concerned-puppy rating,
while films in which animals are killed are indicated with a crying dog
icon. Each "rated" film even contains a short description of its animals'
fates, so that users can assess whether or not they're willing to watch.

NEW HAMPSHIRE BOARD OF EDUCATION
ADOPTS A DISSECTION-CHOICE POLICY
The New Hampshire Board of Education has adopted a dissection-choice policy
instructing all K-12 schools to allow students to pick modern teaching methods. In
place of cutting up animals in science classes, an alternative is interactive digital dissection. PETA offered to donate state-of-the-art virtual dissection software to New
Hampshire. New Hampshire also gave students the right to opt out of conducting
tests on animals. PETA stated that it is commendable that the state recognized that
animal testing may also “cause ethical conflicts for students due to potential harm
or death to animals” and mandated that students not be forced to participate. New
Hampshire is the 21st state to allow students to opt out of animal dissection.
Animals used in classroom dissection come from biological supply houses & obtain
others from animal shelters or capture them from their families in the wild.

AHS RESCUES SICK, EMACIATED
FOX - REHABILITATED & RELEASED
In mid-November, the Sea Girt Police
received several calls from area residents concerning a sick fox. The police
then contacted AHS to assist in its rescue. One of the police officers found
that the fox was living under a porch at
the National Guard Training Center. The
lone figure could be seen, frightened of
people, & roaming from one restaurant
to another, searching for food. A
humane trap was placed there by AHS
Animal Control Officer Kevin Rooney
and within a short time, the pathetic
fox was caught. She had suffered an
advanced case of mange as well as suffering from open wounds and was
extremely emaciated. She was brought
to AHS & then to a wildlife rehabilitator
who specializes in foxes to improve the
life of this poor animal. AHS was kept
up to date with reports, photos & the
progress & now she has been released
to live a life of freedom.

domestic violence
Over many years, the AHS has quietly assisted the victims
and their pets involved in domestic violence situations. Either
the frequency has escalated or the reporting of this abuse
has become more public. As a result, more victims are
reaching out to get help for themselves and their pets. The
National Link Coalition is a collaborative network addressing
animal abuse, domestic violence, child maltreatment & elder
abuse & that help/prevention can be achieved through such
partnerships.
AWI ON-LINE SITE FOR SAFE HAVENS
The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) has created an online site where domestic violence survivors can find women’s shelters that have “Safe Haven” arrangements with community organizations to provide temporary foster care for their pets. The “Safe Havens Mapping Project”
lists some 1,423 such programs. Searchable by state & by Zip Code. Contact AWI at 900

NEW JERSEY
Assembly Bill 2155 (Assemblywoman Celeste Riley) would establish a 3 year pilot program in
the Dept. of Children & Families (DCF) to provide emotional support to children who have
experienced mental, physical or emotional trauma; have witnessed or are victims of an act of
violence or have behavioral health care needs & are receiving services from Division of
Children’s System of Care or Child Protection & Permanency in DCF. This directs the commissioner to give preference to organizations that provide animal-assisted therapy services. In the
Assembly Women & Children’s Committee.
June 5th – Hammonton, NJ - Employees of DCF will be trained on “Species-Spanning
Prevention: Animal Abuse as a Risk Factor for Child Maltreatment & Family Violence”.

NEW YORK CITY
In mid-March, the Purina Play Haven & Dog Park was opened at the first-ever dog park in a
domestic violence shelter in which survivors could have their cats & small pets. The Dog Park
is an expansion of the Urban Resource Institute’s People & Animals Living Safely (URIPALS).
The Dog Park now allows survivors to bring their dogs as well. URI is the only one of NYC’s
50 domestic violence shelters that accepts pets. The unique dog park features a ramp, tunnel, bridge & platform for dogs to play & exercise. There is also privacy & security of shelter
residents.

MANTUA
A private citizen has put up a
$1,000 reward for arrest & conviction of the perpetrator who
put a plastic bowl that was filled
with anti-freeze in a resident’s
yard for their 1 year old
Rottweiler. The bowl was later gone. Bella fell into a
semi-comatose state & was rushed to a veterinarian
where she later died. Anyone with information is asked
to call Mantua police at 856-468-1920.
GARFIELD
The N J Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) have
asked the town officials to postpone a painting job for
a rusting tower after a resident saw a nest of baby
ravens. The DEP has asked the Bergen County Audubon
Society to monitor the situation to see when construction can resume. Active raven nests, with eggs or
young, are protected by federal law through the NJ
Endangered & Nongame Species Conservation Act.
FRANKLIN LAKES
The borough is in the process of installing “pet waste
stations” throughout the town so that residents can
properly dispose of pet waste. Anyone who violates the
pet waste law could face up to a $1,000 fine.
DENVILLE
Brian Cunningham is planning to challenge the township’s zoning ordinance so that his children can keep
the chickens they raised ever since they hatched from
an incubator. There are 3 hens – Molly, Dolly & Polly
that are pets – not their dinner. The ACO tried to
remove the chickens & Cunningham has been issued a
summons by the township zoning officer. His neighbors have not expressed any problem with the birds –
or with the free eggs he gives them. Raising poultry
isn’t allowed under the ordinance but they think of the
chickens the same way people raise rabbits or homing
pigeons. The hens come in the house whenever they
want & are allowed to roost in the “pet room” of the
house.
AROUND THE USA
FLORIDA
Stephanie Hird, 29, was charged with 5
counts of felony animal cruelty after appearing in a porn video that showed torture &
killing a variety of animals including rabbits, chickens & more for sexual
gratification of viewers. Actress, 28 year old Sara Zamora, was arrested
for her alleged part in the same films. Newspaper reports indicate Hird
was identified as the woman who shot & killed tied-down rabbits with an
air rifle at point blank range for a porn video. She has not been charged
in that case.
MASSACHUSETTS
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Justice Barbara Lenk wrote for
the unanimous court that police can legally enter private property without a search warrant to rescue endangered animals – a decision that
extends the same authority long used by police to save the lives of people. This matter involved Heather M. Duncan, of Lynn, being prosecuted
for 3 counts of animal cruelty after police found two dead dogs & an an
emaciated dog, all still chained in her backyard. Police tried sounding a
siren, ringing doorbells, calling out on a loudspeaker & through phone
calls. With no response, they opened a padlocked fence, clearing the
way for police to rescue the last surviving dog. When they tried to prosecute Duncan, a district court judge said they had no right to enter her
property.
ILLINOIS
Chicago passed a landmark ordinance that will ban Chicago pet stores
from selling puppies, cats or bunnies that originate from “puppy mills”
or large-scale breeding facilities. The law takes effect March 2015 &
offenders could be fined up to $1,000 a day or charged with a misdemeanor if the offense is repeated.
NEVADA
Video surveillance system footage appeared in the March 12th edition of
the NY DAILY NEWS showing callous suspects torching by pouring gasoline all over the store. There were 27 adorable pups at the Prince &
Princess Puppy Boutique in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas firefighters rescued
all of the pups and credited the sprinkler system that doused the flames.
MASSACHUSETTS
On April 14th,Gov. Martin O’Malley signed the law that made Maryland
the second state banning devocalization to protect ALL its dogs & cats
from this cruel convenient surgery. The bill had been introduced by
Delegate Ban Kramer.
SOUTH DAKOTA
On March 14th, Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed Senate Bill 46 which
makes animal cruelty laws a felony. The new law makes animal neglect,
mistreatment or abandonment a Class 1 misdemeanor, but animal fighting and animal cruelty -- intentional, willful & malicious infliction of
gross physical abuse that causes prolonged pain, serious injury or
death—is now a Class 6 felony. Felony crimes carry heavier penalties,
allow state investigative agencies rather than local law enforcement to
become involved & send offenders to state prison rather than county
jails.
MINNESOTA
SF2068 & HF1370 would request that research dogs & cats should get a
chance at a normal life after what they endure in tests for our drugs,

PENNSYLVANIA
The Senate passed legislation to strengthen the state’s Dog Law by preventing irresponsible kennel owners from operating under false pretenses.
Senate Bill 1107 (Alloway) would prevent violators from continuing to
operate a kennel at the same location by having a license issued to an
immediate family member.
NORTH CAROLINA
The little town of Weldon came together to get a law passed that makes it
illegal to chain a dog. Let’s hear from other communities!
NORTH CAROLINA
The Animal Legal Defense Fund has filed a Petition for Rulemaking with
the N.C. Board of Agriculture & the Office of Administrative Hearings to
prohibit the routine use of carbon monoxide for euthanasia or “gassing” at
animal shelters. Euthanasia by gassing is not recommended by the
American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) & the American Humane
Association.

CHINA
According to ANIMALS 24-7, Animals Asia
Foundation (AAF) announced a major victory -- it
will take custody of 130 moon bears at the
Nanning Bear Farm & will convert the farm into a
sanctuary for about 100 bears. The farm was built
to produce bear bile for use in traditional Chinese
medicine, but the venture did not pay off. It is hoped that this agreement
will prompt the government to phase out other bear farms nationwide
which number over 70, caging more than 10,000 bears. Obtaining bear
bile is a cruel effort & many of the bears are exposed to infections, organ
failures & many are sick. Starting in May, the sickest of the bears will go
to the Bear Rescue Center for care.
SOUTH KOREA
Merritt Clifton of ANIMALS 24-7 has reported that a potentially precedent-setting criminal prosecution of a South Korean dog meat vendor may
be imminent. Witnesses saw a dog killed by hanging at a slaughterhouse
as there was to be a crack down on the illegal killing of dogs & cats and
selling their meat. Web page photos have been posted to Korean Alliance
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (KAPCA) Facebook page of the
dog hanging & of animals put in onion bags & sold illegally at a dog
meat market.

The United Nations’ International Court of Justice issued a ruling that
Japan failed to justify the 3,600 minke whales it hunts in the Antarctic in
the name of “scientific research”. Only two papers were published based
on data from only 9 whales. As a result of the International Court of
Justice, Japan cancelled its annual Antarctic whaling hunt … but they may
go ahead with “research” whaling in the northern Pacific & in Japan’s
coastal waters not covered by the commercial whaling ban. Norway &
Iceland are now the only countries to continue to engage in whaling.
CANADA
The Paws-R-Us Kennel in Shawville, Quebec had the largest seizure of animals in Quebec’s history. More than 500 dogs were living in poor conditions without sufficient food or water & suffered horribly. Charlene
Lombard and daughter Nicole agreed to abide by a court order not to
own more than 3 pets or operate a kennel for the next 2 years. The dogs
included 30 breeds from Chihuahuas to Golden Retrievers. Many were
“outraged” by the lenient sentence. This occurred in 2012 – two years are
up and many are waiting to see if they return to selling puppies. All of
the original 500-600 dogs have since found new homes. As a result of
this cruelty, the Quebec government unveiled new regulations requiring
humane treatment of dogs & cats by breeders & pet owners.

NEWS FROM NEW YORK
WESTCHESTER COUNTY
The public was stunned to learn that dozens of
deceased cats were discovered in plastic bags hanging from a tree in
Yonkers. A total of $18,000 is being offered as a reward for any information leading to the arrest & conviction of the perpertrators. Newspaper
reports indicate that the cats were in various states of decomposition.

BROOKLYN
Denzell Oglesby, was sentenced to 1 year in jail after setting fire to an
orange tabby cat named Michael. He will also serve an additional year for
bail jumping & attempted burglary. Oglesby is prohibited by court order
from owning, living with, or having any control or custody over an animal
for 5 years. Michael was rescued & brought to a veterinarian for treatment
but was euthanized to relieve intense suffering. Oglesby was also suspected
of killing a neighbor’s cat prior to Michael’s death.

The Society’s unique SHARE-A-PET PROGRAM is helping many animals thanks to the
kindness and generosity of many HUMANE NEWS readers. The animals are placed on the program on the basis of such details as victims of cruelty, handicap, length of stay, etc.
As a result of our efforts, brand new facilities have been given to these orphans. You can help by
“adopting” one of these orphans for $10.00 a month. In turn, you will receive a color photo and
report of your pet every four months, plus a membership card which entitles you to FREE
ADMISSION TO POPCORN PARK. You are also invited to visit your pet, take him for walks,
bring him treats, toys, and even adopt him. All funds gathered under this program are applied
directly to the care of these animals. Any funds that exceed what is needed for a particular animal are applied to the care and welfare of other shelter anmals. You can also view and sponsor

No one likes having a discussion with family or friends about "What if" when it comes
to our pets. It helps to have a discussion so that it is not an uncomfortable decision or a

Maria & Antoinette of Howell Township
The Society was contacted by relative of a cat owner who had
passed away. It had been several
days before the elderly woman
was discovered & there were 2
cats in the house that needed to
be removed. The relative brought
the veterinary records to the AHS
& it was discovered that Maria &
Antoinette are 2 year old littermates. By the time the cats got to
AHS, it was necessary to remove
an eye on each of the cats due to
untreated injuries/infection they
had suffered. Sadly, life was in a
turmoil & they were fearful of the
unknown. They are now well & enjoy the free-roaming area of the Tinton Falls cat room. They

After 12 years with her family, they said the kids were allergic. Betsey
was in dire need of a dental and she was suffering with ear mites. The
very sweet and sensitive maiden was kept in a quiet area of the
Society's Newark facility. We thought her lovely look and gentle
purrrrrsonality would hopefully make her a candidate as a speedy adoption to a calm cat lover. She has spent quite some time hoping for
someone to visit and show her some affection. Due to her mature
years, she has been overlooked, but Betsey is still hopeful that someone

A relative brought Jazzy & Lulu to AHS after their owner passed away. The
two 4 year old portly pussycats were removed from the only owner and
the only home they had ever known. Both are calm & people oriented and
in need of a loving home. Separated from everything they have ever
known, the 4 year old Jazzy & Lulu at least have each other. They have
