The city of Abu Dhabi has achieved extraordinary results in just over half a century, making its mark as a global business hub, and becoming home to a diverse range of nationalities with residents from over 150 countries living here. Over 2 million people live and work in Abu Dhabi, lured by year-round sunshine and the chance to enjoy a tax-free lifestyle in one of the world’s most progressive cities. Abu Dhabi has entered a new era of development that will, over the next 20 years, propel the Emirate to become one of the world’s leading centres of excellence, not only in business, but also in culture, infrastructure, tourism and social activity. A series of substantial investment projects have been initiated, promising to establish Abu Dhabi as a place everyone wants to be a part of. Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second most populated city in the UAE, and its geographical location makes it a strategic destination that connects east to west as a vital transit point in the world. Abu Dhabi hosts federal government offices, and is the seat of the Government of the United Arab Emirates. Rapid development and urbanisation, coupled with relatively high income per capita, has transformed the city into a larger and more advanced metropolis. Almost four-fifths of the UAE is desert, but has contrasting landscapes, from the towering red dunes of the Liwa to the rich palm-filled Oasis of Al Ain, from the precipitous Hajjar Mountains to the more fertile stretches of its coastal plains. Since its birth, the UAE has become an important player in regional and international affairs. In 1971, the late President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan unified the small, underdeveloped states into a federation - the only one in the Arab world. Under his visionary leadership, oil wealth was used to develop the UAE into one of the world’s most open and successful economies.
