Special appreciation to parents for their support. Pic at right shows all the students who participated at the Regional Level at UFV. A record number of our students won awards, so did our Science teacher Mrs. Ghag. Go to the school website for full details. Principal’s/Administrator’s Message: • Science Fair Gold Medalists off to the Finals in Toronto! The Deputy Inspector’s Visit: Every two years, a Monitoring Visit from the Office of the Inspector of Independent Schools is made so that our school standards are high. (An Evaluation Visit is made by a team every 6 years.) DPS’s Monitoring Visit was on April 12. We can now confidently proceed with our plan for a full-fledged Grad Program. Ours will be a university prep program with a Science and Applied Science focus. The highly rated North America-wide AP Program will be integrated with this to enable students who opt for challenging academic studies to have a head start for university courses. Best wishes to our 11/18 Grade 10 students who chose DPS as the right school for focused studies . • New Kindergarten Students Orientation Day, May 12, 2011– a special newsletter will go home. • Opening Ceremony— Ceremony—Grad Wing /25th School Anniversary Celebration Set for May 27th, Friday. More on this event from the Administrator’s Office will follow. • Flashback: School Akhand Path Sahib at the Gurdwaras: This was very successful. Thanks to the Abbotsford Gurdwara Committees, our Board and Trustees , donors, the PSG, grandparents, parents , Sikh Studies staff, other school staff, and students. Special thanks to our shabad kirtan students and staff for the stage performances, to our Head Prefects for their perspectives on why this school is special, and to our Founding Principal for the speeches on behalf of the school -S. Chand (Principal)/Sandeep K Lidder (Administrator) Future Einsteins: Arbind Dhaliwal (Gr. 9 Honors Science class), Charanpreet Mahal and Gurmeen Banipal of Grade 81 will take part in the Canada-wide Science Fair (with 6 students from the Fraser Valley, of which two our own former students). A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: The date for the InIn-school Pro D Day has been shifted from May 6 to June 16,2011. FYI– Group and quality photos are given preference for our newsletters, for obvious reasons. PAGE 2 ENHANCING STUDENT DEVELOPMENT TRAINING THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW DASMESH SCHOOL Future Einsteins (cont. from P.1) Student Vote These students will get an allexpenses–paid trip to Ontario for the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF), May 14-21. CSWF is the highest level of science fair competition in Canada. There will be over 500 students competing for medals, scholarships, cash awards, and other prizes worth a total of $1 million. Best wishes to all our students, past and present! Grade 10 students are preparing the intermediate students – Grades 4-10 – for the important student-led debates in the gym Wednesday April 27 and for the Student Vote at our school on Thursday April 28. Our school will see student-made campaign posters up around the school, with students role-playing different candidates and leaders. Every Thursday morning the senior students ensure all classes understand the importance of this democratic process, with short explanations in each classroom. We are part of a Canada-wide initiative to accustom young people to involvement in political issues, so that their future turnout when they reach legal voting age will counteract the present decline. We encourage families to continue discussions at home, so that our country continues to be a lively participatory democracy. Thanks to Mrs. Burton Math Contest– photo below, Grade 7 with their teachers , Mrs. Boyal (left), Mrs. Gill (right) and the Math League Competition co-ordinator, Mr. Dhaliwal. and her Grade 10 Social Studies Team for this hands-on education that is so vital for all Canadians right now. Annual Science Olympics -on May 14, Saturday, at Yale Secondary. Two teams from Grades 6 and 7 are participating. Best wishes to the students and teachers. Results of the Feb 22nd Math League Contest for the top three scores in each grade: Grades 4 winners: Ravneet Sohal, Harshan Dhindsa, Jaskirat Jawanda, Manvinder Jawanda, Ishwarjot Grewal Grade 5 winners: Manjoban Boparai, Megan Dhaliwal, Ikamjot Dhaliwal. Leaders of tomorrow are in our classrooms today!” A9 Summit Youth Conference Two of our School Prefects are all-day delegates to the A-9 Summit to be held on April 21st at Abbotsford Exhibition Park-Ag Rec Gallery. They are Grade 10 student Amrit Sandhu (Term 1Head Girl/Prefect ) and Grade 9 student Manjot Sandhu ( Term 3 Head Girl /Prefect).. -Co-ordinators: Mrs. Ghag and Mrs. Burton with staffsupport. The students’ school project for Earth Day (April 26) will be showcased by them at the Summit. A Skill that Empowers: Many of our current and former students participated in a recent Public Speaking Contest organized by the Optimist Club and supported by Leadership Teacher, Mrs. Ghag. DASMESH PUNJABI SCHOOL PAGE 3 HERITAGE STUDIES NEWS TUITION FEE UPDATES Sikh Studies and Punjabi Department News: What a successful and eventful month of community-based and school-wide events we have enjoyed these last two months ! From Akhand Path Sahib at all our local gurdwaras to the in-school Vaisakhi Celebration and Nagar Kirtan parade in Vancouver, every event was well-organized and well-attended, and solidly supported by so many people. There are too many individual names to be listed here, but the following deserve special mention: Nagar Kirtan, Vancourver: all students, staff, and parent volunteers, including Sawanjit K Jawanda (Sumanjeet K, Gr. 6), Charan S Litt (Amrit S, Gr. 51), Ajaypal S Wadhawan (Aman S, 5-1), Ramandeep K Sekhon (Simrit, Gr. 8), and Baljit K Khangura (Harleen, 5-1). Special thanks to: Jujhar S Dhillon (Channy, Gr 10) for his truck, Sukhpal Singh Bhoparai (Amritpal K, Gr 4-2) for his whole day “sewa” to fill in the vacuum of a much-needed bus driver at the last moment , Charanjeet K Bath (Jasneet K Bath, 4-2), Baljit K Dhillon (Harsimran Dhillon, 4-1), Jatinder K Brar (Jasleen Brar, 4-2), and Jaswinder K Sandhu for rendering extended support for the shabad kirtan float. Meets Tues and Thur. after school. Grades 5-7. Co-ordinators: Mr. Gilies and Miss Sonoda Heritage Dance and Study Club. Club For all Gr. 4-9 interested students. Meets Mon and Fri. 3:05-3:50 . Support Staff Team: Mr. Sangha (tabla and dhol), Ms. Bains (Learning Assistance/Gr. 4 banghra and gidda), Mrs. Chaina (librarian), Mrs. KK Brar (Sikh Studies HOD), Mrs. Mann (computers). Teachers will update students and parents for any other on-going or new Club activities. TUITION FEES/DONATION DISCOUNT DEADLINE (June 22, 2011): If you clear all the accounts by June 22, 2011, you may claim a discount of $150/student. Tuition fee/donations accounts should be cleared by September 22, 2011. There will be a late fee of 1.5%/month/studen t on the remaining balance of student fees starting October 1, 2011. ( Salmon Enhancement Program-Updates: There are many little salmon now in the fry stage (feeding begins within the next week). Ms. Sonoda and her team of Science students extend an invitation to interested parents and students, but please make arrangements first. There are precautionary rules to be observed. We are excited at this year’s 99% survival rate to date! Badminton Mr. Chan and Mr. Vincent have highly interested teams of Grade 6 and 7 students participating for the first time in a badminton tournament against other area private schools. These Falcons have played several exciting matches at Cornerstone Elementary already. The games continue until the end of April. Jeans Day April 28, 2011. Wear jeans.
