GRADUATION SPEAKER
Evans to graduates: Make sure
your definition has character
Jeff Evans, social studies teacher, gave
the 2013 commencement address. The
text of his speech is as follows.
T
he Class of 2013 is without a
doubt the most amazing graduating class ever assembled. Is
this merely opinion? No, it is a fact. I
mean you guys even survived the end
of the world. What other class can say
that? Take that, Mayans.
On a serious note, this district hiring
me was one of the best things to ever
happen to me in my life behind only
my mother marrying my stepfather,
meeting my wife, and having my three
beautiful daughters. Why do I love my
job? It is because of these wonderful
colleagues. It is because of this wonderful community. But, most of all, it
is because of these wonderful kids. I
humbly thank you all for allowing me
the opportunity to teach them because
I really do love them.
It is so rewarding watching as young
boys and girls become young men and
women.
Anthony Webb loved to play basketball but was too short. Nevertheless,
he tried out for the junior varsity team
but was told to sit in the stands during
the games because of his height. He
finally got the opportunity to play
a game and scored 20 points in his
debut. Encouraged, he tried out for
varsity the following year only to
be told he could not try out because
of his height. Instead of quitting, he
worked harder.
He not only worked his way onto
the varsity team, but he led them
to the playoffs. His senior year he
was named Player of the Year--in
Texas. He wanted to play Division
1-A basketball but was told he could
not because of his height. Undeterred,
he led his junior college team to the
national championship. An assistant
at North Carolina State took notice
and arranged a meeting with his
head coach, the late Jim Valvano. As
Valvano approached the small player

School’s Legends Stadium.
at the airport, he whispered to the
assistant, “If that is Spud Webb, you’re
fired.” All Webb did was lead N.C.
State to the Sweet 16. He wanted to
advance to the NBA but was told he
could not play in the NBA because of
his height. Therefore he opted to play
in the United States Basketball League.
This led to him finally being drafted
by an NBA team, only to be promptly
cut before the season opener. Well,
Anthony “Spud” Webb ultimately
went on to have a fine NBA career
culminated by besting Michael Jordan
in the slam-dunk competition--at 5’7”.
You see, only Spud Webb knew
what he had on the inside.
And, only you know what you have
on the inside.
Listen. There is nothing wrong with
being realistic and having a backup
plan. There are not too many people
shorter than me that are going to star
in the NBA. However, sometimes
we are much too quick in accepting
negative labels and abandoning our
dreams.
We all have strengths and, yes--we
all have weaknesses, too. If every-
one enters a pageant, unfortunately,
everyone is not magically going to win
the crown. If everyone enters a race,
everyone is not going to magically
cross the finish line at the same time.
And, if everyone takes a test, everyone
is not going to magically obtain a 100.
Our abilities vary. And, this is okay.
But, there are some things that can
never be measured by physical appearance, a stopwatch, or a standardized test. Heart and soul may sound
like clichés, but it is precisely these
intangibles like drive, grit, and passion
that more often determine success as
opposed to natural talents.
Anthony Webb defined his own
dreams.
You define yours.
Go beyond looks. Go beyond times.
Go beyond scores. Never deny what is
on the inside.
And, lastly, make sure your definition has character. Be a good friend.
Be a good sibling. Be a good parent.
And, most of all--be a good person.
Looks, a victory, or a grade--these are
all just temporary. Please never forget
that your character is forever.

With great pride and joy, Joseph and Sheri Gebbia proudly announce
the graduation of their daughter
Katelyn Nicole Gebbia
Our wish for our baby girl:
Comfort on difficult days,
smiles when sadness intrudes,
rainbows to follow the clouds,
laughter to kiss your lips,
sunsets to warm your heart,
hugs when spirits sag,
beauty for your eyes to see,
friendships to brighten your being,
confidence for when you doubt,
courage to know yourself,
patience to accept the truth,
and love to complete your life.
