2013-14 Annual Report - Good Samaritan Community Services
COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS Annual Report 2013-2014 Good Samaritan Community Services Partners 1 64 Obviously, the number of blessings we have at Good Samaritan Community Services is infinite. It would take an entire library to document them all, but none would be more important than our #1 blessing—you. Enjoy these highlights and thank you for your support. Dear Friends of Good Samaritan Community Services, It is my great pleasure to share with you some of the many ways in which Good Samaritan Community Services (GSCS) has fulfilled its mission to serve as a catalyst for change, supporting individuals and families by providing excellent community services to overcome the impact of poverty. During the past year, in San Antonio, Pharr, Corpus Christi, Alice, Sonora, and Wimberley, our organization served 5,250 individuals and families with an emphasis on Excellence and Growth. EXCELLENCE. Our beautiful Senior Center was re-accredited by the National Council on Aging. It continues to be the only Senior Center in South Texas that is nationally accredited, offering the highest standards and best practices. The Good Samaritan Scholars’ Award was established for outstanding students attending community colleges, and five (5) young GSCS alumni were chosen to receive 2-year college stipends. They are: Juan Abrego, Jasmine Acosta, Ashley Cardenas, Juan Angel Lopez Lemus, and Ariadna Martinez. GROWTH. The “Camp Good Sam” program was expanded to yet another South Texas community, Wimberley, where enrollment exceeded expectations. After school and summer programs in Pharr, Texas, outgrew their first home on the campus of Trinity Episcopal Church and were invited by the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District to occupy a much larger facility at Carnahan Elementary School at no cost. The invitation was a vote of confidence in the quality of work being done with the youth of Pharr. Services were made available to the San Antonio community on Saturdays, including classes in English as a Second Language and Citizenship, as well as counseling and immediate assistance. GSCS was able to respond to the large increases in hunger and food insecurity on the west side of San Antonio by continuing its collaboration with the San Antonio Food Bank and creating a much larger food pantry on our campus. It has been a privilege to witness the countless ways in which the support of many friends like you help this organization make lasting change in the lives of thousands. I thank you, and ask for your continued support. Faithfully, C. Cay Rowe Anvil Communications I have been blessed to serve as Chairman of the Board of Good Samaritan Community Services (GSCS) over the past year, working with 20 other Board members who volunteer their time and expertise. It has been our responsibility to ensure that GSCS programs effect positive change in the lives of individuals and families through high-quality services that can be provided at a sustainable cost. Focusing on long-term effects for clients, the community and the organization, Board and senior leadership staff members created a Strategic Plan for 2012–2014, outlining six key goals that shaped much of the work over the past year. I can now report significant success in all six (6) areas. Provision of Excellent Service to Children, Youth, Families and Seniors was reviewed by the Board through internal and external audits and accreditation. Additionally, Board members were given the opportunity to meet with those served by GSCS for conversations about their experiences, the impact of programs on their lives, and suggested areas for improvement. Expansion in Service and in Geography is evident in the increased number of individuals served, hours of operation, and communities reached. The careful, controlled growth recommended by the Board has continued with the addition of another new summer program site in Wimberley in 2014. Enhancement of Brand Recognition of GSCS, as well as securing Diverse and Sustainable Financial Resources, has been realized through the work of Jill Vassar, our new Director of Advancement. The first Salsa 5K and Good Samaritan Award Dinner are examples of new ways she and her team have told and celebrated the stories of GSCS, and created opportunities for the larger community to meaningfully support our mission. Enhancement and Expansion of Community Partnerships have provided significant additional resources for all those served by GSCS. Collaborations bring to our clients access to numerous complementary services, as do close ties with corporations. In June, Board members worked side by side with hundreds of volunteers during H-E-B’s Tournament of Champions to transform our grounds and play areas just before Camp Good Sam began. Efficiency and Effectiveness of Operations have required regular Board review of policies and systems, maintaining standards of best practices in policies, and streamlining systems to keep them updated and cost effective. I appreciate the work of the Board and Staff that has sustained our organization during a challenging year. We are all extremely grateful for the support of so many of you whose financial contributions continue to create capacity for this agency and its mission to serve as a catalyst for change, supporting individuals and families by providing excellent community services to overcome the impact of poverty. Sincerely, Jeff Rochelle Board Chair, 2013–2014 5 BLESSING# Loving 6 Good Samaritan Community Services Partners CHILD DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Ages 18 months to 5 years Children are offered developmentally appropriate care to achieve or maintain age-appropriate gross motor, fine motor, pre-writing, cognitive, language, self-help and personal and social skills. GSCS operates two (2) programs: 1. Full-Day and After School Year-Round Care 2.Summer Only Care (“La Escuelita de Verano”) Served 169 children 18 months to 5 years old. Partnerships include San Antonio Housing Authority, Avance, San Antonio Public Library, Assistance League and USAA. Childcare TINA’S STORY Four-year-old Tina cried excessively each day at drop-off for her first six weeks and did not interact with others. When initially assessed using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ), Tina was unable to complete the gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, or personal-social tasks and only completed one of six tasks on the Communication subtest. Tina’s teachers began providing support for her developmental deficiencies and shy temperament. The staff worked with Tina’s mother to integrate individualized therapeutic services. Within a few weeks, Tina became more outgoing, demonstrated greater confidence and was able to form strong friendships with two of her classmates. Now, with the exception of communication tasks, Tina’s scores show significant improvement and are all within the normal developmental range. Working part time, she did not qualify for subsidized childcare, but had hopes of getting back to school and becoming a Registered Nurse. Her priorities were stable full-time employment and safe childcare for her children. She was able to get her 3-year-old daughter into a school program, and Good Sam provided care for her 2-year-old son. The transition was hard, but despite juggling work hours and after-hours childcare, she kept her focus on her goals. While her son struggled with separation anxiety early on, she knew he would need to adjust, and adjust he did. With the help of GSCS Case Management, she navigated the landscape of Child Care Services (CCS) to get the benefits she needed to put her family on the right track. Rachel continues to face struggles with maintaining the stable environment she wants for her children, but with the strength and support of the Good Samaritan Case Management staff, Rachel can be successful.
