PSA 2014 - Saint Bonaventure Catholic Parish
Saint Bonaventure Catholic Parish The Ascension of the Lord The Ascension of the Lord PASTOR’S CORNER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord.* After Jesus rose from the dead, he spent forty days with his Apostles and other specific disciples. The Resurrected Lord wanted to help them believe that he was alive and to wait for “the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts of the Apostles 1: 4-5) Our Lord called upon them to “receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1: 8) As soon as he said this “he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.” (Acts 1: 9) You would think they would be heartbroken that Jesus was not physically with them, but they knew he was with them. The Apostles spent time in prayer. Mary the mother of Jesus along with many disciples were gathered with them awaiting the Holy Spirit. The Lord had gone to be at the right hand of the Father. Where he had gone they hoped to follow. This is our prayer as well. We ask the Lord that we too will be with the Lord forever. We have received power through the Holy Spirit when we were baptized and when we were confirmed. We are called to bring this Good News to our families, our friends and “to the ends of the earth.” *All U.S. ecclesiastical provinces, except Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Omaha, and Philadelphia have transferred the celebration of the Ascension of the Lord to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, June 1. So this is the case in the ecclesiastical province of Los Angeles which includes the dioceses of Fresno, Monterey, Orange, San Bernardino and San Diego. Page two Diocesan PRIEST RETREAT June 3-6 P lease pray for our priests who will be on retreat this week with their brother priests of the Diocese of Orange. Daily Prayer for Priests O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful and tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely and desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me; the priests who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way, especially ... O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen. —St. Therese of Lisieux Please note the following changes in our liturgical schedule. BETHLEHEM CHRISTIAN FAMILIES May31-June 1 The Bethlehem Chrisian Families will be here to sell their HAND-CARVED RELIGIOUS ARTICLES made of OLIVE WOOD. The sale of these precious articles supports their Church Mission which is to maintain the roots and the existence of the Christian families who are struggling to remain in Bethlehem. At least 90% of the funds raised through these sales go directly to Christians living in the Behlehem area. The proceeds will create more work which will help them to survive and stay in the Holy Land, since they have no other source of income and are dependent on the olive wood industry. Now in its 9th year it has grown to be much more than a fundraiser and has now become a great way to bring Alumni, new families and current families together. These and other funds raised by the SBS Gala are used solely for the purpose of supporting our school. Even if you cannot join us on the golf course, part of the fun of this annual event is the silent and live auction that features unique sports memorabilia, exciting travel and entertainment packages plus the popular Helicopter Ball Drop. These ministers provide spiritual and emotional support for those who, because of illness or infirmity, can no longer actively participate in parish life. Each minister arranges a day and time with their assigned visitee that works for both of them. Weekly visits from a caring Pastoral Minister reaffirm the individual’s importance as a member of the St. Bonaventure parish family and as a member of the Body of Christ. All are invited to join this wonderful ministry. We meet four times a year in the Hall Conference Room. We share how our visitees are doing and answer any questions ministers may have. We also assist at Anointing Services that take place twice yearly on Saturdays at noon with a reception that follows. These are scheduled to provide an opportunity for those who are unable to receive the Anointing of the Sick provided at the 8:00 a.m. Mass on the second Saturday of each month. For more info please call Linda Wright, 846-9438. Ministry of the Month is brought to you courtesy of Stewardship Ministry.
