STHM Student Luncheon
The STHM Student Luncheon was held on May 1st at Hibachi Japanese Steak House & Sushi Bar, and by all accounts it was a fantastic time. The event was hosted by Section 1 of STHM’s Senior Seminar. The event featured keynote
speaker Dr. Ira Shapiro, who is retiring after over 40 years of teaching at Temple University. Associate Dean Elizabeth Barber and Assistant Dean Jeffrey Montague, who teaches the Senior Seminar course, also spoke during the luncheon. Dean
Barber was also presented with a check for $6,500, which went to the Senior Seminar Scholarship Fund. The money was
raised throughout the semester by the students through various fundraisers and sponsorships.

Philly Spring Cleanup
The 3rd Annual Philly Spring Cleanup is in the record books thanks in part to the Section 1 class of
STHM Senior Seminar. This year’s Cleanup, entitled “Keep Up the Sweep Up,” incorporated more
than 11,000 volunteers at 231 official project sites and used approximately 5,000 brooms, 3,000 rakes
and 1,800 shovels to fill 48,000 trash bags with unsightly, unwanted litter.

Blue Cross Broad Street Run
The 31st annual Broad Street Run went off without a hitch on Sunday May 2nd, 2010, and STHM
Senior Seminar Section 2 played a big part in its success. A record 30,000 runners participated in
the event, while Section 2 manned the water stations at Broad and Master in North Philadelphia.

Career Advice from Erica Altwood
(Q) Would you recommend Graduate School?
(A) I would never discourage it, I would just encourage to keep the hunger
that undergraduates get when coming out of school. There are always certifications available.
Erica Altwood,
Deputy City
Representative; Member
of the Executive
Committee for the
Philadelphia Sports
Congress
(Q) What is one way you recommend breaking into the field?
(A) It’s really all about who you know and having someone who can
vouch for you. Getting involved in the community and volunteering is a
great way to meet people and really network.
(Q) Being a woman in a male dominated industry, how do you recommend getting into and moving up in this field?
(A) Keep at your job, keep in touch with people, remember who they are
and something about them, and make yourself memorable. If you have
something that makes you different, like being a female who can rattle off
stats, capitalize on it. Also, get as much knowledge as possible and never
stop learning.
(Q) When on an interview, what are some recommendations you have?
(A) Be confident and engaged. Have questions for the people interviewing
you, bring letters of recommendation, and if possible, bring writing samples.
Doug Mazzocco,
Assistant Men’s
Merchant, Tommy
Hilfiger; Manhatten, NY
(Q) Any last tips that you have?
(A) Always take opportunities and be open to them. Never forget, dealing
with people has its advantages.

Doug Mazzocco, STHM 2007
Allen Woodard, STHM 2009
The ability to network and develop meaningful professional relationships has been an
invaluable quality asset throughout my career. Marketing yourself positively, regardless of the industry, allows you to position
yourself favorably to virtually any employer.
Never be afraid to take risks in order to pursue your professional interest because passion and enthusiasm will ultimately breed
success.
Learning to work together for one common
goal and having a strong work ethic. Everyone you work with are all there for the same
thing. In my case, it is having the program
succeed. Having a strong work ethic goes a
long way. People notice when they see you
are working hard.

11th Annual Networking Seminar
Spring 2010
The 11th Annual Networking Seminar was held by the Senior Seminar class "Yesterday's Students, Today's
Leaders," to bridge the gap between industry professionals and STHM students. A wide range of vendors from
the tourism, hospitality, sport, and recreation fields were invited to partake in the networking affair. The guest
speaker, Cara Joftis, who is the Vice President of Marketing for the Philadelphia Union, shared her experiences
in marketing a new club during the current economic environment. The
networking seminar was a great experience for underclassmen to create relationships with alumni and other industry
leaders.
“It’s all about people, it’s all about networking...”
