Fifth Sunday of Lent
March 13, 2016
Our dignity and worth as individuals do not come from our own merits,
but from God’s free gift of grace. Whether we sin or do good, God’s
love for us remains constant. We cannot judge our worth based on our
own merits and piety. We must continue to strive to live in accord with
God’s calling, trusting not in us but in the power and compassion of
Jesus.

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION
Stand as a Witness For Peace
In The Holy Land
Pope Francis has asked our parish to support Christians
in the Holy Land. Through the Good Friday Collection,
you stand in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land
as a witness of peace. Your support means that our
church will conduct parish ministry, provide Catholic
education, feed the hungry, build houses for Christians,
maintain shrines and operate refugee centers in the Holy
Land. Like Simon of Cyrene, you can help carry the
cross under very difficult circumstances in the Holy
Land. Christians, along with all of the clergy and religious who serve in the Holy Land, will deeply appreciate your prayers and financial help!
PLEASE BE GENEROUS!

Fifth Sunday of Lent

There is this story of a nine-year-old Jonathan that on one Sunday
morning decided to skip church and go for a long walk. His mother
frequently told him that if he skipped church, he would miss a chance to
see Jesus. But Jonathan had been going to church his whole life and had
never seen Jesus there before, so he didn’t think he’d be missing much.
Besides, his church was an old, small, run-down building - just a little too
confining for his desire to run and play.
Jonathan’s walk took him across the railroad tracks in town for the first
time in his life. He noticed that the houses on the other side of the tracks
were much bigger and much nicer than any in the poor neighborhood
where he lived.
A few blocks later Jonathan found himself in front of the biggest, most
beautiful church he had ever seen. The steeple alone seemed as tall as a
mountain. As he got closer, the big church bells stopped ringing and the last people filed in from the parking
lot. They all had nice cars and wore nice clothes. He didn’t see any people from his side of the tracks going
to this church.
“This must be the Church where Jesus goes,” Jonathan told himself. “It’s so big and nice.” As he walked
closer, he could hear the music coming from inside.
He walked up the steps, through the big front doors, and into the spacious lobby. He continued through
another set of doors and entered the sanctuary. It was the biggest room he head ever seen. “This must be
where Jesus is!” Jonathan whispered to himself.
He noticed an empty seat a few rows from the back, so he sat down to scan the crowd, so he could find
Jesus. The choir stopped singing and a large man in a black suit tapped Jonathan on the shoulder. The
man leaned down and asked Jonathan if he could speak with him outside.
In the lobby, the man asked, “Son, where do you live?”
Jonathan answered, “Well, if you go down the hill, take a left at the corner, cross the railroad tracks, and
head down that street a few more blocks, that’s where I live.”
“And where are your parents?” the man asked.
“They’re probably at church right now,” Jonathan replied.
“Well, son, don’t you think it would be better for you to go to your parents’ church today?”
“But I saw this church, and I knew Jesus was here,” Jonathan said. “So I came to see him!”
“Well, son, I think it would be best if you were to run along home and go see Jesus in your own church in
your own neighborhood,” the man said. “You really can’t stay here.”
Realizing what the man was trying to do, Jonathank got upset. “You just don’t want me to see Jesus!” he
yelled as he turned and ran out the big doors leading to the street.
Sobbing as he returned home, Jonathan shouted, “God, it isn’t fair! All I wanted to do was to see Jesus,
and they wouldn’t let me in!”
Jonathan shuffled along, staring at the sidewalk through his tears.
He turned around, wiped his eyes, and stared in amazement.
It was Jesus!
The Lord smiled at Jonathan, gave him a big hug, and said, “Don’t be too upset, my son. They wouldn’t
let me in there either.”
What about our Church, is Jesus there? In John 17:20-21, Jesus prayed that his church would be “one,”
but we all know that it’s anything but. Jesus continued praying, “May they be brought to complete unity to let
the world know that you sent me and have loved them as you have loved me” (v.23). If we can love each
other, worship with each other, and serve with each other as brothers and sisters - regardless of our color or
economic status - the world will find the gospel irrestible.
Wouldn’t you?

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
Fire safety starts at home
When families have fire plans in place, they
are much more likely to escape the dangers
should a fire occur. Because a fire can separate parents from their children, it’s important that everyone knows how to get out of
the house safely and where to go. Teaching
your kids to be resourceful in dangerous situations can help them in every aspect of their lives.

American Red Cross about fire escape planning,

To Repent is to Reboot
Suerte Felipe
W
hen my computer is down, my son, Topher, advises me, “Daddy, reboot it.” “Reboot” may be
considered as an equivalent term for the biblical word “repent” (Mk 1:15). To “reboot” in computer language is to restart a computer after a crash. “Reboot” implies a process of starting again to recover from a
computer error.
Just as to “reboot” a computer implies that an error has occurred, to “repent” connotes that sin has been committed. Sin is like being disconnected from God. It is “unfriending” God, just like what we do to some people in
Facebook. And what happens after we become disconnected from God?
The Bible tells us the tragic consequences. After Adam and Eve had intentionally unfriended God by believing
the deceptive words of the devil, we have lost our “original integrity.” In the begining, we were like new computers or laptops without any defect or damage, the original state of humanity before the Fall, or as traditionally called,
before Original Sin. But with the disobedience of our first parents, it’s like they opened a website that had a virus
in it. It has damaged humanity’s computer system. We have lost our original state of being connected with God.
Having eliminated God in our life, we try to pursue happiness in other things. Pope Francis says, “Once man has
lost the fundamental orientation which unifies his existence, he breaks down into the multiplicity of his desires”
(The Light of Faith, 13). Have you ever wondered that after you have acquired the thing that your heart has been
longing for, still you find yourself not completely satisfied and you keep longing for other things?
For example, you have worked hard to save money for iPhone 6s Plus. After you acquire this device, your next
desire is to acquire fashionable clothes, new shoes, expensive car, beautiful house, healthy body, more money, popularity, sex, drugs, power, etc. So many idols are competing for our trust. “Idolatry, then, is always polytheism, an
aimless passing from one lord to another” (The Light of Faith, 13).
Polytheism, or worship of many gods, is chasing true happiness through the material things this world offers.
It’s like opening multiple website in our computer. Not satisfied with the drug website, we open the sex website, the
money website, etc. until our computer crashes! Until life has lost its purpose and meaning! When we reach this
point, we see the need to reboot, to repent. How, then, do we reboot our life? TO BE CONTINUED
Parishioners are invited to contribute money to help purchase items to decorate the Church for the Easter season. Donations may be made in memory of a deceased person, or in honor of someone living. The names of all
memorials will be put in the Church bulletin. To make a donation, use the
form provided in the bulletin this week, or submit the following information
on a sheet of paper to the rectory. The last day for donations is March 25.

Fifth Sunday of Lent
We invite all Parishioners to start a family
tradition of attending together on the
Fridays of Lent
Come and pray the Stations of the
Cross on Fridays in the Church:
Stations outside after the 8am Mass
5pm Stations in English,
6:30pm Mass
7:00pm Stations in Spanish
and Portuguese.
Lent and Your Family
Lent is a special time when you can share the concepts of prayer and giving with your children. Take
family time each day to offer devotional prayers.
Consider as a family how you might help others in
need by giving of your time or resources. Even very
young children can understand and will enjoy participating in the process. As a mother, carve out time in
your day for your own special prayer time. This may
involve early rising or time spent away from a
favorite hobby or activity.
Suggestions for daily sacrifice
* No TV for a day
* Choosing one (or more!) item to give to charity
* Performing an act of kindness anonymously
* Reading a chapter from the Bible
* No sweets for the day
For more than 25 years now our
Parish Family has come together on
the Fridays of Lent to enjoy a meal of
Soup or Fish. This long standing tradition allows us to enjoy each other’s
company while enjoying a delicious dinner at a reasonable price. What a great opportunity to start a
Family Lenten Tradition, by attending Mass, praying
the Stations of the Cross together and then to enjoy
dinner. We hope to see many of you at our weekly
gathering in the Parish Hall.
Dinner is served from: 4:45pm-7:30pm
(no dinner on Good Friday)

Confessions
Wednesdays of Lent- 7:30-8:30pm
The presentation of the Living
Stations of the Cross on Good Friday has become a
long-standing tradition here at Holy Family Parish.
We invite all to come and enjoy this very moving
presentation on Good Friday in the Church at 8pm on
March 25. You may call Crystal Flaviano-Binene for
more information. (562) 881-2468
Here are the church regulations for
fasting and abstinence during Lent:
* Everyone 14 years of age or older is bound to
abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays
of Lent and Good Friday.
* Everyone 18 or older, and under 59 years of age, is
bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
* On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, only one full
meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals,
sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according
to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal
another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously
affected, the law does not oblige.
* Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from
these prescribed minimal penitential practices.
Lord God,
you who breathed the spirit of life within me.
Draw out of me the light and life you created.
Help me to find my way back to you.
Help me to use my life to reflect your glory

PROLIFE WORKS OF MERCY
All fourteen of these works of mercy can by fulfilled
by being present at the abortion clinics in prayer and
being a part of Pro-life Ministry. Here’s why and how:
The Corporal Works of Mercy
Feed the hungry – We feed those who are hungering
for love with the grace of God and our love when we
work and pray for mothers and their unborn children.
Give drink to the thirsty – As Jesus said, "I Thirst" on
the cross and children are thirsting for life. The love of
pro-lifers is a response to this thirst.
Clothe the naked – Abortion can leave a woman spiritually "naked and ashamed" before the world. Pro-lifers offer real forgiveness and love.
Shelter the homeless -We give babies in the womb a
home in this world and in the hearts of humanity when
we stand in public for children facing death.
Visit the sick – When we visit the abortion clinic, we
are offering hope to those made sick of heart and soul
by the culture of death.
Visit those in prison – Many mothers who end up at
the abortion clinics are imprisoned in darkness and fear.
We offer them light, hope, and life.
Bury the dead – When we pray for and stand in vigil
for those who die at the abortion clinics, no child ever
dies alone or unloved.
11
The Spiritual Works of Mercy
Instruct the ignorant – The very presence of every
Christians at the abortion centers, instructs the ignorant
to the dignity of every human life.
Counsel the doubtful – The humble prayers of pro-lifers bring grace to the doubting hearts and minds of
mothers in need.
Admonish sinners – The holding of pro-life signs in
public is a call to truth, conversion, and repentance.
These signs have changed many lives.
Bear wrongs patiently – The humility of Christians
bearing the evil attacks of the abortion centers show the
true face of the forgiving Lord.
Forgive offences willingly – Pro-life sidewalk counselors have offered real healing to many broken women
when they leave the mill.
Comfort the afflicted – The presence of death and
hatred hangs over the abortion centers like a shroud.
Pro-lifers bring the comforting compassion of Christ.
Pray for the living and the dead – When Christians
pray at abortion centers, the result can be that a child
scheduled for death is given a chance at life.
These Works of Mercy in which we can all participate
by praying at any abortion center relieve the many different kinds of suffering of our neighbors. Let us all,
"go and do likewise."
We invite parishioners, family and friends to attend
