• Obeys all internal regulations
DEAN’S ORDER No. 7/2008
On student insurance and procedure in the case of accrued insurance
The liability that all practicing students must conclude a separate liability insurance contract for civilian life
(liability insurance in case of harm) and a separate insurance contract responsible for accident insurance is
based on the contractual parties with the health facilities where the student practical experience will be
performed.
For cautionary and general preventative purposes the 3. MF CU in Prague had to conclude a liability
insurance contract in case of harm (including accidental insurance) for all students at the faculty, it is not
exactly responsible that the above stated insurance contracts be concluded prior to the beginning of practical
experience if held in the Czech Republic. This order does not oppose the fact that students may continue to
seek and receive their insurance independently.
If the student wishes to perform his practical experience outside the Czech Republic, it is also necessary in
the area of preventing harm, to conclude a separate individual insurance contract responsible for possible
harm or accidental insurance.
In the case that the student causes harm or an accident occurs, it is necessary that the student must complete
a record with the appropriate responsible doctor or nurse and immediately contact the Study Division at the
3. MF CU in Prague.

Based Medicine
On 3.3.2008, the free three-month trial access period to the DynaMed database was initiated for the 3rd
Faculty of Medicine. To access the database click on the link: http://search.ebscohost.com
Information on this database:
• DynaMed is a clinical electronic informative source that was created by doctors for doctors and other
professionals in health care. It is designed especially for its direct use during clinical experience
(point-of-care).
• DynaMed provides clinically oriented summaries for nearly 3 000 cases. A simple and practical menu
allows doctors, medical students and other health care employees to study information from
publications by world-renowned physicians, clinicians.
• DynaMed is updated daily and monitors over 500 specialty journals and journal databases (e.g.
Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) with the help of a service that regularly implements the
reviews of these publications. Each article and evidence is evaluated based on 7-levelled criteria and
only then, if it passes all the requirements of DynaMed, it is submitted into the database.
• DynaMed is an informative source based on proofs that allow to find the answer for most clinical
questions that were found during clinical experience (according to the results of studies that were
published in the Annals of Family Medicine, November/December 2005.

"Art and neuroscience" (23.4.2008)
In the lecture “Art and neuroscience (Umění a neurověda)” you will be introduced to the evolutionary
importance of human culture that has developed as an evolutionary stable strategy of behaviour ("social
grooming") about half a million years ago. Its maintenance in evolution was ensured by the development of
pleasure mechanisms (beauty) and equipped with their own motivational structure. It has to do with the
development of the neocortex (social brain) more than using tools or walking on our feet and is a condition
to the development of language (homo erectus apparently did not use language). The significance of systems
the so-called mirror cells while ensuring evolutionary favourable capabilities of empathy for others and
predications of their behaviour. Arts and play are important tools in training this system as well as important
in ontogenesis. The hypothesis on the deconstruction of fine arts and music in the 20th century will also be

CARD ACCESS INTO THE DEAN’S OFFICE BUILDING DURING THE ABSENCE OF
THE GATEKEEPERS
A system has been installed permitting access and exit into the faculty building using employee or student
passes in the case of the gatekeeper’s absence due to patrol and the doors are locked. Near the building’s
entrance 2 card scanners are located. One scanner is placed outside and to the left of the sliding doors and
the other is inside on the right side near the gatehouse. The doors will open upon the placement of the
cards to the scanner, or by motioning the card in front of the scanner. The sensitivity of the scanner
depending on the card’s distance from the scanner can vary with each card. Some cards can be registered
from a distance of 5 cm and some only from a smaller or a close proximity.
ƒ A beep will sound and a green light will switch on and the doors will open during a correct scan.
ƒ If the scan beeps, but a red light switches on, you do not have the authorization to enter the
building.
ƒ If the scanner does not react, the card is faulty.
These are the scanners:
1
Troubleshooting:
ƒ In the case that a red light switched on during the scanning of the card – contact – Ing. A. Dvořák
ƒ In the case that the card is not read by or is read on the x-th try, exchange your card at no cost in the
card office stating these reasons. Information on card issuing offices can be found at the faculty web
pages or university web pages.

TRAINING IN CAMBRIDGE
A few observations of instruction in pre-clinical subjects at Cambridge
MUDr. Jan Trnka
Thanks to my almost four-year stay in Cambridge (I began my PhD in Biochemistry after graduating from
the 3. MF CU in 2004) I’ve had, among others, an opportunity to at least in part understand the system of
medical teaching within the first three years of study. Due to the fact that there are interesting differences
between the 3. MF CU and University of Cambridge in the pre-clinical studies, I decided to share some of my
observations with you.
The dividing line between pre-clinical studies and clinical training at Cambridge, is far more clear than in the
Czech system. Students here receive a Bachelor title (where in Britain apart from the CR document a fullfledged university education) and students apply for the clinical part of medical education similarly as they
would for a new study program. Only a small percentage of graduates continue with their clinical studies in
Cambridge, others leave to London, Manchester or even Oxford...! Some students leave medicine for good
and begin their work in investment banks in London City.
The pre-clinical part of study is understood as a regular university degree, not as a preparatory course for
the medical profession. The first two years are complete with similar subjects as in Czech from Anatomy and
Physiology to Sociology, Ethics and Basic communication with patients (according to the global trends, the
courses are individually named-Biochemistry is called Molecules in Medical Science, Pharmacology
Mechanisms of Drug Action etc.) In the third year of study, students can choose any type of program offered
at the University– many choose an annual project in the laboratory or another study program closely related
to medicine, however, there aren’t any formal or informal obstacles that would stop students from studying
a year of Arabic or Mathematics. This to me is one of the most interesting parts of studying medicine at
Cambridge.
2
Concerning the first two years, I’ve had the opportunity to observe from a close distance (as a supervisor, see
below) to understand the instruction of Biochemistry and Pharmacology (modules MiMS and MoDA). The
instruction of theoretical subjects proceeds in three forms– lectures and seminars, practices and supervision.
Lectures, seminars and practices are organized by the appropriate university workplaces. Biochemistry is
lectured by biochemists and Pharmacology by pharmacists (generally specialists with other than medical
training). For example the lecture on apoptosis for the current students can be heard by their co-discoverers,
prof. A.D.H. Wyllie. The lectures always proceed once for all classes and usually pack in a lot of information.
The students have access to study materials on the internet including detailed “handouts” to each lecture.
The level of the lectures is (at least according to the students) generally good, despite once in a while a
weaker lecturer might appear. Compared to lectures, there are very few seminars and practices – for example
the first trimester (Michaelmas Term) Pharmacology (in the 2nd year) is taught within 8 weeks 20 lectures, 5
practices and 2 seminars. Participation at lectures is optional but most medics attend them. Practices and
seminars are compulsory; supervisions are more or less compulsory but no formal attendance is taken.
A second pillar of pre-graduate studies at Cambridge is the above-mentioned supervisions. Supervisions are
usually weekly instructions in a small group (maximum 3 students), not organized by the University but by
individual dormitories (dormitories in Cambridge and Oxford are much more than just places to sleep).
Instruction is carried out by dormitory “fellows” (university teachers affiliated with the given dormitory)
and furthermore postgraduate students of respective subjects. It is a relatively intensive form of instruction
but as a result it is quite interesting and exciting and also well-paid. The dorms and the university naturally
performs evaluation for the lecturers and supervisors and those with a poor evaluation are soon to be let go.
The supervisors have complete freedom in teaching the students, organizing the course, no one tells them
what they should teach and what not, how often – it is left completely up to them and to their arrangement
with the students. The main supervision goal is to prepare the students for the exam (written exam) which
limits the supervisor’s creativity. If the students believe that their supervisor didn’t prepare them sufficiently
for the exam, they will definitely reference that in the evaluation.
With regards to instruction, I have noticed some differences in the quantity and quality of lecturers and the
required knowledge in contrast to the Czech instruction methods. Biochemical paths are mentioned only
selectively and generally, but the students are expected to have a detailed understanding of enzyme kinetics
and thermodynamics or molecular genetics (module MiMS is composed of one trimester – 8 weeks–
biochemistry of metabolism and one trimester of molecular biology and genetics; third trimester is for the
preparation for an exam). In Pharmacology (MoDA) detailed physical-chemical bases of the binding of
ligands to receptors are explained and the students are expected to be able to use these formulas in all main
pharmacokinetic parameters from measured data, although clinical usage of the medicines are limited to a
minimum.
As I have mentioned before, written exams are practically exclusive. Generally, they are composed of three
parts - “multiple choice test” in assorted forms, “data analysis”, a practical problem requiring analysis and
an interpretation of experimental data including appropriate calculations, and finally an essay on the given
subject. Exams are held once per year, in the final (“Easter”) trimester. You can’t usually repeat an exam,
sometimes once and only rarely a number of times. Despite understanding the advantages of oral
examinations, I believe, that the current form of written exams seems to efficiently evaluate the student’s
acquisition of the subject.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that instruction at Cambridge is far from ideal and students
complain of some of its aspects similarly as elsewhere (for example, that there’s too much work, not enough
time, some lecturers are unclear etc.). From that which I’ve had an opportunity to explore, I would like to
emphasize three main points– instruction in small groups can be very effective, preclinical subjects can be
taught in a much smaller time than we are accustomed to and finally the selection of details that must be
learned by students is relatively arbitrary.

'
EVALUATION RESULTS
3
While at our faculty the evaluation results are being published, I would like to present the results of another
evaluation. Despite the fact that there is no Let’s Disgrace Ourselves section in the VNS, I’ve been wondering
whether there should be one due to all the evaluations.
To begin I would like to admit that I don’t personally believe in amateur evaluations. Maybe because I’ve
had the opportunity to see the professional ones, maybe because when I wanted to improve my day, I asked
my students who was their favourite Physiology professor.
But now back to one evaluation and at first a short summary into the problem. Our faculty participates in
teaching biomedical engineering at ČVUT and one of their subjects is Basic Electrophysiology. It is a
semester long subject with fours blocks of lectures and three hands-on practices. Instruction is held at the
Department of Normal, Pathological and Clinical Physiology except for one exception and at the end the
students write a test demonstrating their knowledge unbiased by the examiner. I found it interesting giving
the students a short questionnaire using a simple evaluation system– students marked each lecture, practice
and instructor separately on a scale of 1-2-3, 1 being the best, 3 being the worst.
Now a short story. 31 named students, 7 anonymous students. And so the question of what the differences
might be between the named and anonymous? All together (lectures, practice and instructors) received an
average of 1.38 from the anonymous and 1.4 named; lectures 1.35/1.37; practice 1.5/1.4; instructors 1.34/1.5.
These results indicate that the evaluation for anonymous and those named do not differ or even that the
anonymous evaluate the lectures the same, the practice a little worse and the instructors a little better than
the named.
However, it will now become even more interesting. I forgot to mention that I found it funny to add an
instructor that the students have never met and a practice they never had. These two items were wrongly
evaluated by 6 out of 7 anonymous (over 85 %) and 15 out of 31 named (almost 50 %). Irrespective of
whether they were anonymous or not, let’s call them group F those that evaluated a non-existent instructor
and/or practice, and group T as the group who correctly left out these two evaluations. If we compare that
these two groups evaluated the instructors, we find that group F evaluated the instructors half a point less
(around 15 %less; on a six-number scale, if we count minuses) than group T. Furthermore, the difference
between the best and worst instructor in group F was 0.8, whereas in group T only 0.2. Finally, let us
compare group T (except for one anonymous respondent) and their evaluation of practices, lectures and
instructors with the results of their exam. The relation here is obvious whereas the worse their test, the worse
were their evaluations of all items, and that being up to 25 %. Two conclusions can be drawn from this:
firstly, the anonymous completed the evaluation without consideration (85 % wrongfully evaluated the nonexisting items, the existing ones with a large variability) and give worse evaluations. For the observant ones
(named with consideration) it can be shown that the weaker the student, the worse the evaluation (and I will
give two red chocolate bars to someone that disproves that the same is not true for the anonymous). In
summary: anonymous evaluation cannot be other than without consideration, is more negative and from the
weaker students even worse. And what else? Not even this evaluation can be relevant for the evaluation of
instruction or instructors. The only thing it can do is flatter, amuse or even hurt someone?
Šimon Vaculín
P.S. as a post scriptum I find it amusing to state the instructor (Mrs. X) and the practice results that never
existed. For some reason, I can only remember the named results. Mrs.X received an average of 1.6 (which is
the worst grade, the worst average after that was 1.4, the best instructor received an average of 1.2). And the
non-existent practice? It looked the same– it was evaluated as the worst of all. Let it give us a working
hypothesis that the evaluation of the non-existent can be considered as a random evaluation, as a zero. In
electrophysiology as an iso-electric line. In that case, all real instructors and real practices were evaluated as
exceptionally positive. Therefore, let us remain in the section Let’s applaud ourselves.

Clever Czech Minds
In regard to the compulsorily voluntary attendance at seminars
In 2006 Dean’s Directive No. 2006/06 was issued, containing the sentence “Attendance at seminars will not
be checked.” Yes, this wording is somewhat amusing. Seminars, essentially, are a part of the compulsory
curriculum and it cannot be said that they are optional. However, the faculty’s administration came to an
1
agreement with the students, the basics of which are that students can themselves determine how they will
learn the “compulsory” knowledge, and this knowledge will then be required from them. This is quite a
deviation from the socialist use of time cards when arriving at work in the direction of requiring a certain
performance – the completion of tasks based on each student’s own decision, for which the student then
bears all consequences. But, we’re in the Czech Republic, and, as usual, things here work… a little different.
The impact from this change became evident almost immediately. Students immediately seized this
opportunity and started taking advantage of this newfound liberty – some selected only those seminars that
they believed to be beneficial, some attended to all of them, just to be sure, and the last group didn’t attend
any. Which group was the largest and which smallest is a question best fit for a poll.
This, of course, had another effect. Some overfilled seminar halls, designed for about half of the number of
students it contained, immediately freed up and during seminars most students finally were able to sit at a
table and didn’t have to take notes while balancing a notebook on their knees. The issue of overfilled
teaching areas partially solved. As the saying goes, “Two birds with one stone.”
Students and faculty administration rejoiced...
The lecturers reacted less flexibly. Most ignored the directive and continued to demand attendance at
seminars. They knew that if attendance was voluntary the questionable quality of many of the seminars
would be exhibited and that seminars would then turn into private consultations in the faculty buffet and
carefully heated seminar halls would fill up only during tests.
The faculty administration, in cooperation with the student body, notified the lecturers that they are not
following the dean’s directive and eventually they realized that they would have to come up with some
solution, while not losing credibility. Although it is said that we are a nation of improvisers and
untraditional solutions, the results of the various thought processes were surprisingly unanimous – without
a moment’s notice seminars turned into compulsory training sessions, internships or conferences – and so
seminar halls once again started to fill up.
The students let out a sigh and hung their heads...
All of a sudden we have become the faculty with by far the highest amount of practical training. This is
unfortunately only according to the bulletin boards in front of the leadership’s secretariat. In binding official
documents nothing of the sort occurred. And so, as is common here, attendance at seminars has once again
become dependent on not only the students’ interest in a given lecturer, but also in their interest in the
second hand of their watches, which students stare at intently near the ending of class with an attendance
sheet in their hands…
I’m sure this is not the ending of this story. We are in the Czech Republic and people here don’t give up
without a fight. Students found other ways in which to outwit the lecturers and lecturers will have to
continue to think of ways how to stay on top.
And, as is customary here in Czech, everyone will grunt curses at one other during any good occasion…
I wish our faculty would become an island of a different type of thinking and approach, which would
surpass that of the surrounding Czech reality. I personally don’t give up so easily and I hope that I
experience it before I go into retirement:)

2008 SKI COURSES
After last year’s somewhat unsuccessful winter when many of us didn’t even bother bringing the skis out of
the basement we started planning the ski courses for the school year 2007/2008 far in advance. We asked
ourselves the question whether we should move these courses somewhere abroad due to the snow
conditions. On the other hand, we were aware of the higher cost (though with much better ski conditions) of
the courses abroad and after long consideration we decided for a compromise.
Part of the courses would take place here at proven destinations in Krkonoše /Rokytnice n/Jizerou, Pec
p/Sněžkou and Špindlerův Mlýn/ and one course would take place in the second largest ski area in Europe
SkiAmade – FLACHAU in Austria.
2
In the end St. Peter took pity on us and there was snow unusually early – in November. Many students took
advantage of this and went with us either to December weekend events in Krkonoše or abroad. In total 168
students participated in the ski courses.
We think everybody had a good time at our courses, that they did some sports, rested from their completed
exams, or conversely, prepared for future exams in the healthy mountain air. At the same time they were
familiarized with health issues in a mountain environment, new trends in textiles and with current
advancements in skis and snowboards.
We are a little saddened by the now-traditional approach to these courses by students of the 3rd Medical
Faculty. We think that even during their demanding studies they could complete these courses in greater
numbers, like their colleagues in the 2nd Medical Faculty, and thus gain those sought-after credits.
We wish you all a wonderful summer and we look forward to the successful completion of the summer
semester and or other courses organized by the Institute of Physical Education (not only winter ones). Bye

Re: Let’s pat our own back / the results of one evaluation
(reaction to Doc. Vaculín’s submission to VNS 15/2008)
In the last issue of VNS I was intrigued by an article by Doc. MVDr. Šimon Vaculín, Ph.D., in which he
assesses the evaluation system at our faculty.
Because the conclusions he comes to are in my opinion serious and I disagree with each of them, I would like
to voice my reaction.
The evaluation system at the 3rd medical faculty definitely has its shortcomings. Some pitfalls of the current
evaluation system at Czech universities are described in the ninth issue of Forum magazine
(http://iforum.cuni.cz/IFORUM-4623-version1-UKF_0307_web.pdf). It was discovered, for example, that
subjects that students see as key are assessed higher than those that are seen as marginal. Also, some subjects
are in themselves more interesting for the students of a given subject (and so it is not difficult for the
educator to receive a higher assessment). Subjects at higher levels receive higher evaluations (the subjects
might be more interesting and/or the students more mature and more understanding of their meaning…).
Subjects aimed at practical use receive higher evaluations than those aimed at theoretical use, selectable
courses are rated higher than mandatory ones. The student’s personality also has a big effect – everybody
enjoys something else (someone else) and so another may see what one student evaluates very highly as
poor. More detailed information can be found in the mentioned magazine (Mareš J. Open questions in the
student evaluations of education quality. Forum 2007; 3:14-18).
In regard to doc. Vaculín's study, I think it does a good job of illustrating other shortcomings in the current
evaluation system. The fact that a large portion of the students evaluated nonexistent educators or
practicums was a result of the fact that questionnaires were handed out to students following completion of
the course. At that time students apparently remembered only a fraction of how each lesson progressed, let
3
alone what the names of the educators were (although the fact that some educators are not accustomed to
introducing themselves when entering a seminar may also have some influence as the student might then
mistaken him/her with the name he/she sees in the questionnaire).
I cannot, however, agree with the conclusions doc. Vaculín has to offer. If students with worse test results
evaluate everything as worse we could deduce the relation “bad student Æ negative evaluation.” This is a
considerably simplified view. The possibility of the existence of the relation “bad education or education not
suiting a particular student Æ poorly prepared student & negative education assessment” wasn’t even
considered.
In regard to the criticism of an anonymous evaluation – even if it was proven objectively (and with a large
sample) that anonymous evaluations are less reliable, I cannot agree with the statement “it cannot have any
bearing at all in evaluating education or educators.” Although personally I don’t express myself with fiery
words (nor am I a voter of the Communist party), I am convinced that this evaluation must remain
anonymous (just like government voting).
If some method has pitfalls it is necessary to describe them and to be aware of them, but it’s not necessarily a
reason to cast aside the entire method. I also believe that it’s not a question of whether to perform
evaluations but how specifically can the performance of these evaluations be treated methodically
Doc. Vaculín’s research, in my opinion, showed that evaluation questionnaires should be handed out to
students at the beginning of a course and not after they are finished (maybe a computer manner of
evaluations would be helpful, which has already been implemented in some faculties), and also, that it is
necessary to more precisely define the evaluation criteria. What I would like to see, for example, is an
evaluation of whether the subject matter that should have been covered was actually (and properly) covered.
This parameter might be more inclining to subjectivity than those that are present on questionnaires these
days.
I probably wouldn’t have reacted to doc. Vaculín’s submittal and would have considered his conclusions as
isolated opinions had I not noticed the reflection of common disregard of students’ opinions. Another recent
example would be the circumstances of the reform of the IIC module testing. This radical change affecting at
least one entire year of students was not preceded by widespread discussion between the reformers
(educators) and students, as such an important decision would deserve. Discussions were arranged after the
decision took place and had little meaning. And the majority of students would have accepted the changes
positively had they been worked out better and had there been a detailed and timely information of
educators (if there was now an educator evaluation of how well informed they were of the sides of the
required scope and forms of testing I would be curious of the results) and of those who are affected the most
by it – the students. I find it sad that the inadequate awareness of students is often interpreted as their own
fault, not as a failure in communication.
I think that societal tendencies to make decisions about those “down there” without sufficient
communication and feedback (education evaluation is a part of that too) should be resisted by a university
environment. Only then will the title universitas magistrorum et scholarium be used deservedly.

Within approximately the last year possible changes in teaching the 1st cycle (meaning the first and second
year) have been discussed. We would also like to hear your opinion on the matter and therefore that is why
we would (students of all years of study and teachers of all years) like to invite you to a panel discussion
held on Thursday 22.5. at 15:00 in the Polák lecture hall. In order to have something to work with we have
prepared a radical so-called purple reform variant (it can be downloaded on pdf and ppt at www.duska.eu)
that we would like to show you during introduction. The end of the session should be focused at whether we
would like to keep our status quo or if we should change something and how. Everyone is invited and
everyone will have a chance to be heard.

NOTES IN HISTORY
September 26th, 1868 (140 years):
In Čimelice (Písek area) A l f r e d F I S C H E L w a s b o r n
He graduated, July 12th, 1888 at Prague’s old town secondary school; he later studied at the German
medical faculty of the Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague (graduated 16. 8. 1894); during his studies he
worked as a demonstrator at the Department of Anatomy in the academic year 1891/92 (lead by the
exceptional pioneer in the field of comparative anatomy and the author of the mesoderm theory, prof. Karl
RABL during the years 1885-1904), in the winter semester 1892/93 as a demonstrator of the Department of
Histology (lead by the famous pioneer in the field of Physiology of the senses and neural functions, prof.
Ewald Karl Konstantin HERING during 1870-1895 as Purkyňe’s successor in Prague, and other noteworthy
employees such as the physiologist and histologist prof. Sigmund MAYER, discoverer of physiological
degeneration and regeneration of peripheral nerves and then, the assistant and future professor and
candidate for the Nobel Prize Alfred KOHN, discoverer of the parathyroid glands in humans, author of the
teachings on chromaffin tissues); in the summer semester 1893 he worked as a 2nd assistant of the
Department of Anatomy and upon graduating, as a 1st assistant to the Department of Anatomy at Prague’s
German medical faculty (1895-1909). March 28th, 1898 he was habilitated in Anatomy and Embryology,
August 7th, 1903 he was named an associate professor of Anatomy and Embryology, in the winter semester
1904/05 (after prof. RABL left for Leipzig) he substituted as the Head of the Department of Anatomy (until
the new Head of Department, prof. Rudolf Armin FICK, expert on the Anatomy of the Locomotive System,
began on 15. 3. 1905 that was first in using X-rays in class). November 12th, 1909 he was free to do his
internship at other universities, but in the year 1910 he was back as the Head of Department of
1
Experimental Morphology. He remained in Prague for another six years until October 6th, 1916 when he
became a full-professor of Embryology and the Head of the Department of Embryology at the medical
faculty in Vienna; since January 1st, 1921 he worked as a full-professor of Embryology. He retired in the
year 1935 and died in Vienna, January 12th, 1938 – as a Jew at the right time: exactly a month before the
Austrian federal chancellor Schuschnigg’s trip into Berchtesgaden and exactly two months before the
triumphant arrival of Hitler into Vienna after the „anschluss“ of Austria.
He left behind over 40 works in the area of Embryology and Histology especially of the eye and
nervous system. He published his results on the spotted salamander that exceptionally aided in the
understanding of the lens regeneration, in Über die Regeneration der Linse (Wiesbaden 1900); he was a pioneer
in developmental mechanics as an author of Terminologie der Entwicklungsmechanik (Leipzig 1912); his most
prominent works include Lehrbuch der Entwicklung des Menschen (Berlin 1929) and Grundriss der Entwicklung
des Menschen (Berlin 1931). In Vienna he co-published Zeitschrift für wissenschaftliche Biologie.

NOTES IN HISTORY
8. 10. 1918 (90 years):
Moritz L O E W I T D I E D I N I N N S B R U C K
He came from Prague, where he was born not on the 27th (as he himself thought and most worldly
literature has mistakenly accepted), nor on the 22nd (as state by Dobson), but on October 17th, 1851 (as is
recorded in Prague’s Jewish Newborn Matrix). His birthplace No. 791 on the corner of Wenceslav’s square
and Vodičkova street (across from Wiehl’s house) had a beautiful Renaissance tower surpassing the
development of the whole Lower Square; today nothing remains. In Prague he studied at the new town’s
piaristic secondary school on Na Příkopě (graduated July 22nd, 1871) and later the Charles-Ferdinand
Univeristy (graduated February 24th, 1877); after graduation he worked as an external physician at the
Department of Internal medicine at Prague’s General Hospital, since October 1877 until October 1879 as an
assistant at the I. medical clinic in Prague, whereas he definitely found his field in experimental Pathology:
since January 1st, 1880 until the end of the year 1887, he worked as an assistant at the Department of
Experimental Pathology in Prague; February 2nd, 1882 he was habilitated in general and experimental
Pathology; when Prague’s University was divided in 1882 according to the language in which it was taught,
he became an employee of the German University; five years later he left Prague, on December 5th, when he
was named an associate professor in Experimental Pathology in Innsbruck; he became the founder of this
field and the founder of the Department of Experimental Pathology at the University of Innsbruck; in 1890,
2
he was named a full-professor in Experimental Pathology; during the years 1895/96, 1902/03 and 1910/11
he was the dean of the medical faculty in Innsbruck.
He invented the method of imaging teleneurons using formic acid („Loewit’s method with formic
acid“). However, his domain was the field of Haematology: he is the author of the theory of infectious
leucocytosis, the creator of the term „leucopenia“, enriching the specialist nomenclature, the author of the
blue-print erythroblasts were labelled as „Loewit cells“) and a number of articles in German Specialty
Journals. Later he expanded his interest in the area of Immunology, to which he dedicated the blue-print
Infektion und Immunität (Berlin, Wien 1921), and Diabetics.

16.10.2008 SUMMER NURSING PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE Practical nursing experience is mandatory as part of the Master’s study program in General Medicine with preventative focus. The practical experience may be completed after second year. A requirement for completing the practical experience is to fulfill the credit for Basic Nursing. The practical experience is in part organized by the 3.MF CU in cooperation with FNKV, and partially organized by the students themselves. The students from Slovakia can also complete these requirements in their own country under the same circumstances as the Czech students. The main objectives of the practical experience 1. The student under the surveillance of experienced nurses will expand their knowledge and gain practical experience in patient care (the basic and specialist nursing care) for in‐patient facilities. 2. The student will be introduced to the organized duties in nursing care and to the management of thehospital. 3. The student will learn the basic requirements for nurses and of the whole medical care team. 4. The student will gain experience and will master communication with the patients and with the whole medical care team. Scope and focus The holiday practical experience will run for 3 weeks at the in‐patient care area of the basic department of internal medicine and surgery that means at the Department of Surgery, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics, Urology, Neurology. The students will be required to complete all three different time shifts. They will complete 3‐6 afternoon shifts, 1 – 3 night shifts and 1 Saturday or Sunday shift. The work hours are 40 hours per week (including the 30 minute break). Work Fulfillment The work is focused on the work fulfillment of the nurses in their particular department. Aside from nursing care, the student must complete individual nursing duties that are all recorded into the attached list confirmed by the nurse. MUDr. Daniela Janovská, CSc., Vice‐dean for Study Affairs and Education IT – TECHNOLOGY AT THE 3. MF CENTRAL AUTHENTICATION SERVICE AT CU AND 3. MF– CU AND 3. MF CAS– HTTP://LDAP.CUNI.CZ What is it? The central authentication service (CAS) serves to verify the user’s identity using a log in name (your personal number printed on the CU identification pass under your photograph) and password (usually the initial passwords are generated at the pass issuing centre) for entering into the application or informational system used at CU and 3.MF. More information on passwords below. Why? • Many informational systems and applications carried out at CU and 3.MF only serve signed up users. The informational system or application must in some way verify the user’s authorization into the system. • Each system has its own password and log in name and who is supposed to remember all these details. Therefore • Attempts to connect all CU and eventually even 3.MF systems to 1 authentication source (Central authentication service CU‐ CAS), where all updated data on all students from all faculties are kept. Data is transferred on‐line or in regular time intervals. Thereby keeping it updated. • If everything is connected to this authentication source, only one login and password is required and can be used for all faculty and university applications‐ (invalid for e‐mails) What do I need? • A valid CU Pass • Select the type of password I want– where do I need access Types of passwords – Verified and unverified password • Verified password is one that ƒ Is assigned by the issuing center and you can be changed within 10 days at the address http://ldap.cuni.cz following proper procedure ƒ Or based on your request one from the administrator of CAS at 3. MF (O. Kubánek, room number 519). The verified password must satisfy the proper parameters (capital, regular letters, numbers) – see Basic policy for creating your password– www pages of CAS CU. This password allows you access into all CU and 3.MF systems. • An unverified password is one that can be personally via the web at the address http://ldap.cuni.cz – because you never received your password from the issuing center or you forgot your password or didn’t change it within the 10 days of the assigned password. 2
This password may not function for access into all CU and 3. MF systems and so for many users cannot be sufficient When is it necessary to have and use a verified password only at 3. LF? ƒ For access to the student computers in room number 222 ƒ To connect to the wireless network Eduroam Other connection systems work for unverified passwords. During your first registration do not forget to complete your e‐mail. The system will send notices on the end of validity of your password. Your password is valid for 365 days. A summary of application and informational systems connected to CAS at 3. MF: a) Wireless internet for the academic network in the Czech Republic and abroad ƒ Access to the wireless network WiFi – Eduroam (see http://eduroam.lf3.cuni.cz/doku.php) b) Science and research ƒ Submission of grant application forms GA CU (see http://is.cuni.cz/webapps/) ƒ Access to grant and publication activities ‐ system OBD and VERSO – newly established in the year 2008 (see http://www.lf3.cuni.cz/cs/veda‐a‐vyzkum/inis/) c) Studying and social matters, access to student computers ƒ Access to the Study information system (see http://is.cuni.cz/studium/) ƒ Access to information on accommodation and dormitory payment at CU ‐ Mefisto (see https://www.is.cuni.cz/koleje/platby/) ƒ Request on accommodation and social scholarships (see http://is.cuni.cz/webapps/) ƒ Access to the selective schedule at 3. A new employee can sign in to the 3.MF intranet only after data synchronization with the informational system of the personnel division can take place and is based on the first date of work which can take several days. c) Library application ƒ Onelog/EZ Proxy ‐ remote access to informational sources, databases and electronic journals– new version of the system will be introduced in the second half of 2008 ƒ Central electronic catalogue of the Aleph library– Access to your personal user account, reservations and extension of loans (see http://ckis.cuni.cz/F/?func=file&file_name=base‐list‐lf3) ƒ Digital CU repository– Digitool – expanded in the year 2008 (http://www.lf3.cuni.cz/cs/pracoviste/svi/digitool/) ƒ Federative search engine of el. sources – Metalib – new service founded in the year 2008 ƒ Contextual linking– SFX service An introduction of new services and new library applications created by grant projects for CSI 2008 will be posted on the web pages of the CSI once the project is completed. New CU web pages– Central authentication services ÚVT employees have created new easy to follow web pages for users into the Central authentication system at CU used even by 3. MF. The new pages even contain an interactive guide for users to help them with the CAS system and setting their password (see picture below). An English version is being prepared where the birth number that is now needed for setting your password using the web form will be taken into account for foreign students. 3

In Module IIC a partial exam in Pharmacology is included. This exam is successfully passed by almost all students at our faculty in 4th year (part) of Master’s study. Some are so proficient that they deserve congratulations. From those that I examined, and are currently in the 5th or 6th year, deserve this acknowledgment for their incredibly successful performance at their examination in Pharmacology: 2006/7 Buka D., Gogelová B., Horová I., Karásková V., Kolouch T., Křížová M., Martínek J., Nicholson A., Schreier M., Stádníková L., Svobodová G., Tomková E., Tošková N., Veselá P. 2007/8 Bratlandová B., Drahoš J., Kadlecová M., Liberko M., Müller R., Nekovářová Š., Němčíková P., Scott C., Svobodová A., Svrčinová L., Tůma P., Votavová D. They are students for which I have added a „+“ or „!“. Because I examined only half of the students, it’s expected that incredible results (ability to describe concisely drugs and with certainty be oriented in the most important drugs + a deeper understanding) were attained by at least double the students, which is about 20% of the year. To encourage those that are just preparing for their exam in Pharmacology, I can state that in the previous academic year (2007/8) 160 students passed the partial examination of Pharmacology in Module IIC from 162 students, which arrived to the exam (148 in due time). 48% perfectly, 30% very good, 20% good, two students did not meet the conditions even on the corrective dates. A similar profile was in previous years (see SIS). So it „is possible“, and even perfectly, but it is not an easy examination and it is necessary to prepare for it for a long time. I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that the exam in Pharmacology is one of the checking up on parts of module II.C. Even upon the success of this examination students must participate in lectures in the summer semester for 4th years, when using repetition and applying this knowledge to problem oriented courses of the semester. It can be important even for the complete exam of module IIC. Prof. M. Kršiak &
