June 2014 - Issue 42 ON THE BIKEWAYS CYCLISTS TAKE TO THE STREETS DURING RECORDBREAKING BIKE TO WORK WEEK Bike to Work Week 2014, presented by VCTC and the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District, was held May 12-16, and local cyclists took to the bikeways in record-breaking numbers. Attendance at the daily pit stop events increased 71 percent and online participation increased more than 51 percent as commuters hit the bikeways for the chance to win exciting prizes. THIS YEAR’S WINNERS INCLUDED: New Bike (via $500 gift certificate): Mark B. of Ventura Garmin GPS Device: Angelica C. of Oxnard $100 VISA gift card: Chris N. of Camarillo $50 VISA gift card: Thomas E. of Port Hueneme This year, pit stop events were held during morning commute hours in Cell phone bike mounts: Fillmore (May 12), Oxnard (May 13), Sheri S. of Thousand Oaks & Joe C. of Simi Valley Ventura (May 15), and Thousand Oaks (May 16). During these events, attendees received bike-related giveaways; free bike tune-ups courtesy of local bike shops Performance Bicycles, Trek Bikes of Ventura, and Westlake Cyclery; and breakfast refreshments provided by Trader Joe’s of Thousand Oaks, Noah’s Bagels of Camarillo and Ventura, and The Water Store of Ventura. Thank you to everyone who helped coordinate each pit stop. Most importantly, thank you to everyone who was out on the bikeways reducing carbon emissions and traffic congestion while enjoying the beauty of Ventura County. We look forward to Bike to Work Week 2015! ON THE RAILS METROLINK ONLINE SURVEY: MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD NEW BUS DESIGN UNVEILED A new VISTA bus design was unveiled at the June Commission meeting in Camarillo as VCTC begins a test run of the new artwork. Be on the lookout for the bus as it is comes to a roadway near you, then tell us what you think on Facebook and Twitter! Also, keep an eye out for VISTA buses featuring the Teen Council countywide art contest winners’ work. They should hit the road later this month. The 17-member board of the VCTC meets on the first Friday of each month except in August. The meetings are open to the public and comments on transportation topics are welcomed. ON THE BOOKS VCTC PASSES ANNUAL BUDGET Following a public hearing regarding the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, the FY 2014/2015 budget was approved at the June Commission meeting in Camarillo. At just over $66.5 million, the budget is nearly 14 percent lower than the previous year. Included in the budget is funding for Transit and Transportation ($29 million); Highway ($637,200); Rail ($4.5 million); Commuter Assistance ($477,100); Planning and Programming ($30 million); and General Government ($1.2 million) programs. IN RECOGNITION RIDESHARE DIAMOND AWARD WINNERS HONORED AT UNION STATION Every year, the Ventura County Transportation Commission, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and Orange County Transportation Authority gather to honor rideshare coordinators from across Southern California. On May 29, Ventura County organizations took home six awards from the ceremony and luncheon at Union Station including: Exceptional Employee Ridership: Thousand Oaks Municipal Services Center, Larry McKinney Outstanding Employee Ridership: WellPoint Outstanding Rideshare Leadership: Jerry Anduja, WellPoint Outstanding Employee Ridership: California State University Channel Islands, Danny Haws Most Improved Employee Ridership: Shoreline Care Center, Kristine Morales Rideshare Ambassador Award: Bill Garner, Oxnard High School Congratulations to all the winners and thank you for your hard work championing the benefits of ridesharing. ON THE MAP MOORPARK METROLINK STATION The Moorpark Metrolink Station is served by Metrolink’s Ventura County Line and Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner with 16 Metrolink trains and five Pacific Surfliner trains daily. But that’s not all! VISTA’s East County route operates in the SR-23 corridor between Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark and Simi Valley. You can also connect to Moorpark City Transit and Thousand Oaks Transit via the Metrolink Commuter Shuttle Service directly from the station. With all these great transportation options, it’s no wonder the Moorpark Metrolink Station is such a popular hub in Ventura County!
