INTRODUCTION
THE ROBOTICS MAP IS YOURS!
Becoming a member is free of charge, all you have to do is register and contribute.
The idea of a map was first initiated by the workshop on “The role of Regions in Supporting Robotics”
organised in Brussels on October 30th 2013 by the European Commission, DG CONNECT, the Tuscany Region
and the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna – BioRobotics Institute. The collaborative “Robotics Map” project was
later launched during the euRobotics week 2014 in Toulouse. This initial version of the catalogue results from
a partnership between Madeeli, Robotics Place and LAAS-CNRS (Midi-Pyrenees, France), Thésame and
Innoecho (Rhone Alpes, France).
The “Robotics Map 2015”’s community based ambition is to identify key stakeholders and individuals to build
a map of competences and trigger smart collaboration… resulting in a coherent team structured for
international competition in robotics. To enhance partnerships among members of the community, every
contributor is to identify key contacts, competences, inputs and expectations. The purpose is not to be
exhaustive but to give key information to be easily identified and reached. Every member of the community
can create or modify a form at any time. This first release aggregates data entered by members to generate a
catalogue. Subsequently, twice a year an updated version will be released that will integrate newcomers and
modifications that will have taken place in the meantime.

The RoCKIn Competition 2015 rockinrobotchallenge.eu/rockin2015 will take place in Lisbon
between 21 and 23 November 2015, bringing 15 teams from 6 countries to compete and to benchmark
their robots in domestic (RoCKIn@Home) and industrial (RoCKIn@Work) environments, showing the most
recent progresses of their R&D.
Similarly to what was done last year in Toulouse during RoCKIn 2014, we will also include a Workshop on EU
Robotics Cluster Regions, organized by Madeeli, with its main focus on bringing together innovative
Portuguese companies in this area, together with end-users and investors, so as to look towards creating a
Robotics Cluster in Portugal and promoting opportunities for technology transfer from academic research to
industrial products.
Lisbon is promoting its worldwide image of Startup City and its Town Hall is nurturing this initiative. Come
to see the RoCKIn Competition 2015 and take the opportunity to meet some of the best
Portuguese entrepreneurs in robotics, creating bonds and opportunities for future joint work and
business.

Aquitaine Robotics
Coboteam
The Aquitaine Robotics cluster was created in July
2013 by the Regional Council of Aquitaine, Aquitaine
Development Innovation and the Bordeaux Institute
of Technology. The cluster aims to build a real
economic sector and to develop skills in scientific
research and training, in the areas of manufacturing
and logistic robotics, robotics in open environments
and personal service robotics. Various applications
have been found for “the factories of the future”, the
Silver Economy, agriculture and others. Aquitaine
Robotics cluster diffuses information to its members
(mainly companies, research & training organizations,
and end users) and also to its clusters partners.
Coboteam is the innovative robotic hub initiated since
2014 in Rhone-Alps. It is supported by Rhone-Alps
Region and driven by Thésame (Mechatronic
innovation agency) and Ardi (Rhone-Alps innovation
agency). Coboteam has the vocation to gather all
robotic innovative actors in Rhone-Alps: startups,Smes,large groups,robotic organizations,research
& development organization. Coboteam diffuses the
catalogue to 8,000 qualified contacts

Madeeli
The Laboratory of Analysis and Architecture of
Systems (LAAS) is a CNRS research unit and part of
Carnot institutes, label which highlightsthe quality
and the relevance of its research regarding socioeconomic stakes.
The Robotics topic conducts research involving
perception, decision-making, motion, action,
communication and interaction between the robot
and its environment: the other robots, humans and
ambient intelligence systems.

The Antal Bejczy Center for Intelligent Robotics is devoted to take part in the development of modern healthcare (development of enabling control technologies to support
semi-autonomous, or tele operated robots). Target features include time delay compensation, robust control, perturbation compensation, automated function control and
advanced safety features. Our aim is to develop modern robust control frameworks for a wide range of problems (design of modular, network and manufacturer
independent robotic applications, developed and widely-used new technologies, such as ROS and RT-Middleware backed up by immersive 3D visualisation, collaborative

The BioRobotics Institute is part of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, a public

The Brest State Technical University Robotics Laboratory (BrSTU Robotics) is the main
innovative robotics research group in Brest, Republic of Belarus. BrSTU Robotics has a
variety of functions including research projects, organizing and hosting events and
competitions related to robots and robotic technologies, supporting development and
demonstration experiments.
The laboratory is made of 8 full-time teachers and of around 20 students who are taking
part in the different projects. Areas of research include mobile robotics, robot control
systems, artificial intelligence, robotics, collective behavior and adaptive systems,
reinforcement learning, computer vision.
One of the key directions of our lab is the popularization of robotics in Belarus. In this
way we see robotics as a cross-disciplinary movement where each project requires the
collaboration of different actors with different skills and knowledge. Our mission is to
teach students from different disciplines through projects in robotics. An example of such
education project is the international Belarusian – Ukrainian competition of mobile robots
RoboRace where robotics teams compete on a small Formula 1 track.

The Centre offers a 4 year PhD programme through the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Robotics and Autonomous Systems. An individually tailored MRes course and

training in creativity, ethics and enterprise skills. We produce ‘innovation ready’ postgraduates students equipped through technical preparation, and cohort-wide training

The Centre’s goal is to train innovation-ready robotics researchers to be part of a multi-disciplinary enterprise, requiring sound knowledge of physics (kinematics,
dynamics), engineering (control, signal processing, mechanical design), computer science (algorithms for perception, planning, decision making and intelligent behaviour,
software engineering), as well as allied areas ranging from biology and biomechanics to cognitive psychology.
To achieve impact with robotics also requires non-technical skills, for example an understanding of technology translation, creativity and entrepreneurial processes. These
are an essential component of the CDT programme, captured in the #Cauldron training programme.
ROBOTARIUM comprises four integrated and interconnected components. It is available to researchers inside and outside the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics as well as
industry as a national UK facility. Interaction Spaces for humans and robots to work together in physically separate indoor spaces (ROBOTARIUM West and East). Field
Robotic Systems (comprising humanoids and unmanned vehicles) for operations inside or outside the spaces.
MOBOTARIUM, a human driven sensorised and connected mobile vehicle for data assimilation/situation awareness and interaction for an operator with robots and
intelligent agents in the field.
These are underpinned by a set of Enabling Facilities comprising rapid prototyping and micro-assembly equipment for fabrication and inexpensive duplication of novel
(bioinspired) robot embodiments, their sensors and their on-board computing. Also, state of the art computing accelerators with programmable hardware to develop power
efficient computation suitable for autonomous deployments.
Together, these create an integrated capability unique in the world, for exploring collaborative interaction between remote teams of humans, robots and their environments
at all levels. It is transformational in the range of robot scales and environments that can be experimentally configured, and in the way the study of physical interaction
through robot embodiment can be linked to the study of human interaction/ expression, robot collaboration and real in-field remote operations for mapping and
intervention.

The Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR) is one of the R&D units of the Laboratory of
Robotics and Engineering Systems (LARSyS). Most of its research matches the main
objectives and the research plan of this national research laboratory. Such objectives
and plan embody in their structure a strategy that hinges upon three main lines of
action: science, technology, and interaction with society and industry, all sharing a
systems approach to research using tools that borrow from solid mathematical theory.
This tripartite structure stimulates the cross-fertilization of ideas, motivates challenging
problems, and creates further motivation for inter-disciplinary work with scientists from
other complementary areas such as natural and/or social sciences.
ISR is composed of about 30 university professors, plus more than 10 post-doctoral
researchers, more than 50 PhD students and several administrative and technical staff.

The application themes of our research address grand challenges which solutions have strong societal and economic potential impacts, and raise scientific and
technological issues of major magnitude. In particular, ISR research focuses on technological solutions for problems within the scope of the open oceans and the deep sea,
sustainable urban systems, and biomedicine.
TECHNOLOGIES AND SYSTEM ABILITIES
This diversity of applications, the range of research topics covered, and the relevance given to human capital, are distinguishing features of ISR that constitute its
hallmark. Some common problems are easily identified. One such example concerns sensor and actuator networks, used to monitor the oceans or urban spaces for a
myriad of environmental variables. The complexity of such networks raises optimization problems that require new mathematical results and algorithms. The inclusion of
robots as actuators brings to the scene fascinating problems faced by robotic system designers today, from navigation to task planning and execution, interaction and
cooperation with humans and other robots. These capabilities turn the networks into active aerial, land, and sea entities where monitoring and surveillance performance
can be dynamically improved by moving the robots to adjust the network geometry. Solving these problems requires the ability to blend harmonically contributions from
signal, systems and control theories, engineering and computer science fields such as computer vision, artificial intelligence, or the theory of computation, often resorting
to inspiration drawn from the natural and social sciences.
Another example lies in the bilateral relationship of robotics with the biological and biomedical sciences, where robot assistants and robot swarms are used to study models
of human and non-human animal behavior, while exploiting bio-inspired methods to improve their natural interaction with humans and advance the state-of-the-art of
complex robot systems.

We have several land, marine and aerial robots, as well as facilities – including test beds for domestic robotics, cognitive robotics and marine robotics – where researchers

3. Smart-products & ageing : two research projects (ROBOSANTE1 and ROBOSANTE2) have been financed by the Champagne-Ardenne Regional council with the aim of
evaluating the potential and development of ‘healthy ageing’ robotic technologies, which is a research priority for the region.
TECHNOLOGIES AND SYSTEM ABILITIES
Smart Product & Consumption Research Institute aims at testing several smart technologies to assess their acceptance towards several types of customers (old people,
students, companies, etc.).

This institute was launched in 2012 as the expression of the intention of NEOMA
Business School and of our local authorities to invest in this area before
searching for private corporate funding. Given the rising importance of smart
products or SP (products that can communicate autonomously) in everyday and
business life, the goal of the research centre is to develop knowledge on the
consumption and marketing of these smart products, with a focus on two key
topics: the sensory design and consumer appropriation of SP. In recent years,
several research fields have been launched and the first articles have already
been published by conferences or scholarly journals. Research results and data
have been used in class to enrich the teaching of several courses (Marketing of
Hi-tech Products, Marketing and Design, Marketing and Innovation). The same
approach has been used for executive education (IBM, Econocom, e-mba).
Several firms involved in the development of smart-products have been
involved in teaching (Ubisoft, Aldebaran, Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco, HTC, SFR,
Renault).

The aim of the de Smart Product & Consumption Institute is to develop
appropriate analytical frameworks to help current and future company heads
and marketing directors in every sector of the economy to take up the
challenge of smart products. More precisely, the scientific project of the
institute is to identify and understand :
Expressions of the change from object to smart product ;
The design, and in particular the sensorial design, of smart-products ;
How consumers appropriate smart-products, and the consequences of these
products on consumer practices ;
How companies appropriate smart-products, and the consequences of these
products on marketing practices
The knowledge produced by the Smart-Product and Consumption Institute will
be communicated to all the stakeholders concerned, and more particularly to
marketing managers in technological and non-technological companies, to
management students and to researchers interested in technological
environments.
Our expectations are to work with other partners in robotics to co-develop our
knowledge from a consumer / market point of view.

Raltec is a non-profit and non-university research group. Its core is a team of experienced
experts from different disciplines consisting of scientists and engineers from fields of Software

Citizens in the aging European population are at greater risk of cognitive impairment, frailty and social exclusion with considerable negative consequences for their
independence, quality of life, that of those who care for them, and for the sustainability of health and care systems.
Recent robotic prototypes showed that assistive robots, due to their embodiment and unique interaction capabilities have a high potential to increase the autonomy of
older users at home and improve the quality of life of this target group.
Our goals are the design, development and evaluation of reliable, cost-effective assistive robotic solutions capable of enhancing the quality of life of older persons and their
carers over the short- and long-term.

MARKETS AND APPLICATIONS
The research area of Robolab is focused in innovations and development of novel robot devices and solutions for diagnostics and training in rehabilitation and sport.
The technologies of haptic man-machine interfaces, wearable motion and psychophysiology sensors are developed and implemented in different applications.
Recent achievements come from the upper arm training including also virtual reality, lower-limb prosthesis and exoskeleton control. Motion tracking, diagnostics
and dynamic modelling were lately applied in rowing, ski jumping, and preterm new-borns.
Robolab is also active in evolution of robotic technology for industrial users. Several complex assembly robot cells and solutions were developed and introduced in
Slovenian electro and automotive industry. One of the focus areas is robot contact with the environment, for example deburring. Another activity domain present
contact and noncontact measurements accompanied with manipulation in various industrial fields. An original large scale robotic telescopic handler that was
introduced into building construction in partnership with Trimo, was awarded the EU technology transfer award.

The RoboLab is well equipped for conducting research in the area of human-robot interaction and industry. Robolab is equipped with
six industrial robots and five haptic robots (Motoman, ABB, Epson, Staubli, Focker, Phantom Sensable, Force Dimension),

The SARChI chair at TUT with the different CITSI (Centres, Institutions, Technology Stations and Incubators). TUT developed the technology capacity for prototyping
innovative systems as the wearables robots under development within the Chair. The main research themes include the following:
Modelling and design of Wearable Robotics systems (Exoskeletons) for assistance.
Modelling and control of non-linear networked systems with uncertainties.
Design and control of autonomic and polymorphic wheelchairs that adapt to the disability situation.
Development of pattern recognition and behavioural analysis for human intention, detection to predict the human interaction in the control loop. To handle different levels
of uncertainties in the system, a higher order fuzzy logic strategy will be developed.

The Enabled Environment for Assisted Living is a multidisciplinary research
area. The main objective of this domain concerns the development of tools and
methods that can respond to the needs of the user anywhere and at any time.
A wide range of applications may be considered which include, but are not
limited to, Public Transport Systems, Tourism, Educational Environments (Smart
Campus), Public Spaces and/or any application that is smart enough to assist
the user based on the context or need. The Enabled Environment for Assisted
Living forms part of this emerging area of research. The objective is to develop
innovative solutions for persons with varying levels of disabilities so that the
objectives of integrating such persons into mainstream society can be achieved.
The notion of the ‘handicapped’ situation integrates most classical deficiencies
related to physical, sensorial, or cerebral deficiencies that lead to the inability of
an individual to function effectively. It also relates to situations in which aging
contributes to light handicaps such as visual or auditory impairment. A need
therefore arises for the development of various technologies that cater for
various aspects (mobility, education, services, etc.) adapted to each individual
case. The major difficulty in this domain is the definition of a generic device
that is suitable to a large category of users while at the same time can be
adapted to each individual case.

We are interested in developing collaboration on systems design and control of
the next generation robotics systems as well as in the field the internet of
things and the convergence towards intelligent collaboration between objects
(robots, etc) for the benefit of the user.
Actually our main focus concerns people with disability and our ultimate goal is
to assist paraplegic people to walk.
We ara interested in collaboration also on the Brain Computing Interface and
how to create artificially the motor link between the brain (Intention) and the
exoskeleton (motor).

Icam, Grande Ecole française, delivers Engineering Degrees (Master level) and offers trainings in engineering : lectures and qualifications, internships in our labs in R&D
projects (for short or long periods), research activities, cooperative programs. We offer students an educational environment unmatched for its diversity of thought and
experience, aiming at encouraging a personal development.
TECHNOLOGIES AND SYSTEM ABILITIES
Even though our students at Icam have to go through the basics in almost all engineering fields, specific courses and specific projects are offered to foreign students all
year round by our engineering departments : Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, Material Engineering, Design and Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and
Computer Sciences.
FURTHER DETAILS
What makes the Icam Group stand out is the strength of its partnerships with industrial companies.
R&D projects are carried out by teams of 2 students working full time for one semester, and monitored by a teacher/lecturer (30 ECTS credits).
All R&D projects are performed under contract with companies (from small and medium businesses to large companies) ; this also helps our engineering departments to
develop strong ties with local industry.
