END OF TERM
The end of Term 3 has arrived very quickly. We congratulate
our students who make learning a priority, are respectful and
act safely. Term 4 commences on 10th October for students
and staff. There is no School Development Day. Students
are to return in summer uniform.
SCHOOL CAPTAINS 2017
Congratulations to Hayley Hyde and Torren Fenwick who
have been appointed our new school captains. They were
welcomed by the outgoing captains, Jadess and Blake, and
vice-captains, Fiona and Millie, who have shown exceptional
leadership.
ADVANCE NOTICE: INFORMATION EVENING
FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS OF CURRENT
YEAR 11
On the 18th October at 6pm in the Library, we will present
HSC information to parents and students of Year 11. This is
a very important evening as the WHS HSC Assessment
Booklet will be issued and requirements explained for
successful HSC achievement. It is important that parents
are as aware as their student regarding HSC requirements.
The HSC Assessment Booklet must be signed for on the
night. We anticipate the evening running for 1 and a half
hours (maximum).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YEAR 11
Year 11 students need to be very focused as they move
toward the end of the term. Year 11 exams have
commenced. Students are expected to be at school for the
last week of term. Absence from an examination will require
a Doctor’s Certificate and notification to the school prior to,
or at the latest, the morning of the examination. Students
who have not completed all their tasks or examinations by
the end of term will not meet Preliminary requirements and
therefore place entry into HSC courses at risk. Students
have been provided with further information about our
expectations – please ask to see the information.
LEGACY
Congratulations to Sarah Pernatin, Mackenzie New and
Aleisha Kane who also stood for the captain positions. Any
one of the candidates would have made an outstanding
captain as they all displayed leadership qualities.
We are proud to support Legacy and the work they do. We
welcomed Mr John Hill to our assembly who spoke about
Legacy and shared real life stories on a DVD with us. Millie
Cotmore and Blake Lam attended the luncheon and
Georgia-Rae Gibson, Hayley Hyde, Brianna Scerri and
Sarah Pernatin assisted with Legacy Appeals day.
Thank you to Ms Thornton and the team of students who ran
the voting on the day.
P & C Meeting: Tuesday 25th October 2016 at 7.00pm in the Library. All welcome.

BEYOND THE BRONCOS
Beyond the Broncos mentoring program is excited to
commence the Indigenous Girls Academy at Wollumbin High
School. Allison Lonsdale is the Student Support Officer
based at Wollumbin on Thursdays. Allison is happy to assist
your child with in-school mentoring and support and
transition to work pathways such as resumes, interview skills
and contacts to local employers. The Beyond the Broncos
program has connections to large companies such as Coles,
Kmart and CBA.
The Beyond the Broncos mentoring program recognises that
education and attending school is the most important step
towards “Closing the Gap”. Attending school every day and
completing Year 12 will provide your child with the best
chance of enjoying success, both in school and in later life.
The Beyond the Broncos mentoring program is aiming at
improving your child’s attendance and striving toward 90%,
there will be reward days held once per term where your
child will have the opportunity to meet Broncos players and
receive Broncos merchandise.
In Term 4 there will be a workshop held at Banora Point
High School, dates and times are to be advised, however all
Academy students between Years 7 – 11 are invited to
attend. Your child will have the opportunity of meeting
players and engaging in fun activities all aimed at securing
your child’s place within the program and at school.
All eligible students have received enrolment forms now.

YEAR 9 MATHS QUEST DAY
YEAR 8 MATHS OLYMPIAD
What a way to start the day by winning a box of chocolates
after the long trip to Lismore. Molly, Ayla, Liam and Mitchell
were very quick to answer the first question of the day and
winning a box of chocolates only to then use these
chocolates to win the second box of chocolates.
Eight Year 8 students travelled to Kingscliff High School
recently to compete in the 2nd annual T5 Maths Olympiad.
Garret, Keats, Luke and Ashleigh formed Team B and Ava,
Amanda, Darci and Hannah formed Team A. Throughout
the day they needed to work in pairs and co-operatively as
teams to solve difficult mathematics problems.
The four students were kept very busy all day with an
individual test to start with and then a team activity. All
heads were down and busy trying to solve the problems.
With such a full day, it was great to see smiles on their faces
right up until the last event of the day which was a relay
event.
Even though we did not win any medals we definitely were
good at Maths trivia, winning both prizes. A good day was
had by all and with the buzz of the day, the trip home
seemed very short.
It was a great day, with all students enjoying themselves.
While we were able to manage 4th place overall on the day,
all students performed fantastically given the challenging
nature of the questions.
Below is a sample question which exemplifies the nature of
the Math Olympiad type question. The first student, Year 7
– 10 to provide Mr Ellis with a fully worked solution to the
below problem will receive a canteen voucher.
A Saxon silver penny, from the
reign of Ethelbert II in the eighth
century, was sold in 2014 for £78
000. A design on the coin depicts
a circle surrounded by four equal
arcs, each a quarter of a circle, as
shown. The width of the design is
2 cm.
What is the radius of the small
circle, in centimetres?
T5 BAKE OFF
Congratulations to Amanda
Swift-Devine
and
Nina
Westwood-Card
who
recently participated in the
T5
Bake
Off
at
Murwillumbah High School.
The girls competed against
five other schools in the
Tweed Valley. They were
required to produce two
batches of scones: a sweet
and savoury option. Both
Nina and Amanda worked
in a respectful and cooperative manner and were
victorious on the day,
successfully winning the T5
Bake Off.

HSC PERFORMANCE NIGHT
T5 YEAR 10 CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS DAY
Year 12 Music 1 students finalised their HSC preparations
with a showcase in the performance workshop on August
31st. A modest crowd was fortunate to witness the best
performances of the year with all students improving since
their Trial Examinations 10 days earlier. Brayden Nixon's
performance of “Fragile” was an exceptional demonstration
of a tight performance with excellent expression and style.
Caylah Henderson reprised her piece “Drop in the Ocean”
from MADDD with another sublime and touching
demonstration. An acoustic version of ”I Bet You Look Good
on the Dance Floor” by Dyllon Foley got the crowd pumped
up and excited. Sudi Harrison finished off the night with a
demonstration of his fire spitting lyrical abilities and his
complex compositions. The four students can be very proud
of their effort over the last 12 months preparing
Performances, Compositions and Viva Voces to a high
standard. Congratulations and good luck with your final
external assessment this week.
On the 29th August, Wollumbin High School students
became part of the 70 students from the T5 high schools
who came together at Kingscliff High School to develop their
critical thinking and collaborative learning skills in
preparation for their senior English courses. Students were
presented with a series of texts they had to establish
connections between. In their groups, often with people they
had only just met, students then had to create a
representation of their understanding of the identified
connecting concept from a pile of ‘stuff’. The stuff, a
collection of random objects including: egg cartons, pipe
cleaners, old comics and cardboard rolls, presented its own
challenges and each choice needed to be justified by the
group to all the students in a presentation. All students were
involved in then assessing whose structure most effectively
presented the concept.
T5 SRC MEETING
Thursday August 25 2016
Wollumbin High School students joined other T5 SRC
students at a workshop hosted at Wollumbin High School.
T5 SRC students agreed that each year will see a T5
approach to 1 common national/international day of
recognition. It was decided to build on the groundwork from
2015 and maintain White Ribbon day as a focus for Term 4
2016.
The remainder of the day saw school teams work through a
change maker workshop designed to develop understanding
of change and equip students with the skills to bring ideas to
life.
The T5 SRC meeting will see
teams learn how to develop a
pitch and change the world!
Mr Bristow, the T5 SRC
mentor, thanked the teams
and commended them on
their efforts on the day.
Page 6.
The students not only established connections between
texts, but also continued to strengthen their own critical
thinking skills and the relationships between the T5 network.
A big thanks to all the teachers involved in developing and
running the day.

KAHO KOIZUMI
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD, 2016
Wollumbin High is currently hosting Kaho Koizumi, a
Japanese exchange student from the Kakamigahara City on
Honshu, the main island of Japan. Kaho has been placed in
Year 10 and she will be with us for the rest of the school
year. This is Kaho’s third visit to Australia and she hopes
this time to improve her English speaking skills and to make
new friends. Kaho has been very impressed with the level
of friendliness from people in this community and that
complete strangers will say ‘hello’. On behalf of the
Wollumbin community, we wish Kaho an enjoyable stay in
our school.
Ms Panoff is asking for your support in the Samaritan’s
Purse Operation Christmas Child appeal. This appeal helps
support children in underprivileged areas. The idea is for
students and staff to bring along an item and place it in one
of the collection boxes located on Ms Panoff’s desk in the
staffroom. Listed below are gift ideas. At the end of
September these items will be put into “shoe boxes” and
sent to neighbouring countries. Items need to be here at the
school before 23rd September.
Families are encouraged to fill a shoe box and drop it off
too. All shoe boxes need to include a $9 donation to cover
costs involved in distributing the boxes. For more
information
also

online
to:
www.operationchristmaschild.org.au
Mrs Panoff would like to thank you in advance for your
wonderful support. If you have any concerns or questions,
please contact Ms Panoff at the school.
