Students are involved in Job Shadowing two days a week at one of 3 major health facilities 10 units are UC “G” approved Can also take Sports Medicine Students take Medical English, Science, History, and Math Certified in CPR and trained in Hospital Procedures/Protocols to Industry Standard On the Field Health Careers Academy Health Careers Academy Senior Year Students choose to participate as an intern at one of 70 different sites 20 unit, year-long course where students spend 3 days a week at their internship site Receive Certificates in Veinapuncture, Injection Training, EKG, CPR, and First Aid EMT and Sports Medicine Courses available. Goal is to develop, encourage, and recognize the brightest future health care professionals. 6 Categories – Emergency Preparedness – Health Professions – Health Science – Leadership – Recognition – Teamwork Health Careers Academy CPR/FA Team Event Purpose – To provide the Health Science student with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in team CPR/First Aid in emergency care. Event consists of two rounds of competition for a 2- person team – Round 1 • A written, multiple choice test of knowledge and understanding • Top scoring teams (scoring 70% or higher) will advance to Round Two Health Careers Academy CPR/FA Team Event Round 1 Question Example The correct technique for opening the airway of a patient who you suspect has sustained a head or neck injury is: Head-tilt, chin-lift Cervical neck lift Jaw thrust maneuver Spinal immobilization lift Health Careers Academy CPR/FA Team Event Round 1 Question Example The correct ratio of compressions to breaths for infant two-rescuer CPR is: 15:1 15:2 30:2 5:1 Health Careers Academy CPR/FA Team Event Round 1 Question Example Your treatment for a fractured radius may include all of the following except: Splinting the extremity using a rigid cardboard splint Treating the injury with ice packs. Immobilizing the extremity using a backboard and cervical collar. Using a sling and swathe to immobilize the arm. Health Careers Academy CPR/FA Team Event This skills event will consist of two rounds of competition for a 2-person team • Rescuer 1 - First Aid – Bleeding – Fractures – Burns – Heat Exposure • Rescuer 2 – Obstructed Airway – CPR/AED Health Careers Academy CPR/FA Event Judges Judges • Judges: two judges (one for each rescuer) – The judge for the first aid procedure's) must be at least a current ARC First Aid instructor – The judge for the CPR or Obstructed Airway Procedure's) must be at least a current ARC or American Heart CPR Instructor • EMTs and Paramedics may judge either problem • RNs with emergency training and the above certification may judge either Health Careers Academy CPR/FA Event Assistants Patient Timekeeper Moulage Specialist Courtesy Corps Health Careers Academy CPR/FA Event Supplies First Aid kits are supplied by the competitors and are inspected by event managers prior to the competition. Please turn to the judging sheet and prepare to review either Rescuer 1 (First Aid) or Rescuer 2 (CPR). Health Careers Academy Judges rating sheets are collected by event managers and scores are tallied. Tallied scores are verified by the HOSA Competition Committee. – Round 1 and Round 2 scores are combined and final scores are recorded. Event winners are announced and medals awarded at the awards ceremony on the final night of the State Leadership Conference.
