SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
REPORT
VOLUME 41 • ISSUE 2
Dear Wildcats, Parents, and Friends
2010-11 is off to an amazing start thanks to our staff, parents, and students.
Classes are in full swing and the first six-week grading period Report Cards have
been mailed. Time truly flies when you are having so much fun! Homecoming week
has come and gone and I hope you enjoyed all the activities.
The Eastmont School District has set October 27th, 28th, and 29th for Parent
Teacher Conferences in all buildings. There will be no classes in session on those
dates. You should have received detailed information describing how to schedule
conferences. Appointments can be made via the website or making a phone call to
schedule your conferences. We have a variety of times in an attempt
to accommodate your busy schedule. We have set aside Thursday night the 28th for
evening conferences. In exchange there will not be any conferences on Friday
afternoon the 29th. The actual schedule for conferences is in this publication on
page 2.
Along with all the
course-work and intense
focus on academics there
have been several
outstanding co-curricular
events. Many of our “Cats”
have been competing in a
variety of athletic contests, Our Wildcat football team does more than win games on the gridiron as they collected three
preparing for concerts, and truck loads of non-perishable donations for Serve Wenatchee in August. - Photo by Ron Mason
rehearsing for the upcoming
fall play, There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom! There are also many community
service projects, fund raising activities for a variety of charitable organizations, and
other outstanding leadership activities going on here at EHS.
Tuesday, November 2nd is a very important date. Please remember to cast your
ballot and have your vote counted. The Eastmont School District has a very
important Bond issue in this election. Please ask questions and visit the Bond
information Frequently Asked Questions located on our District Website. You will
especially enjoy the video clip created by Mr. Wavra demonstrating how crowded
our halls and stairways are during passing time. It’s a hoot!
Please keep checking our website and publications like this newsletter for other
great activities involving our students. We appreciate your support, volunteerism,
and Wildcat pride. The connection between your involvement in our school and
your student’s success is obvious and appreciated.
If we can be of better assistance to you and your student, please contact us: in
person, on the phone, or via email. Our goals are continuous improvement and
outstanding service.
We look forward to seeing you during Conference week here at EHS.
Go Cats!

Picasso steals the SHOW for EHS Art Club
The artistic experience of a lifetime for thirty-five students from the
Eastmont and Wenatchee High Art Clubs was brought to a reality on
October 12. WHS Art instructors Mike McClun and Don Collins joined
EHS Art instructors Terry Valdez and Mark Wavra in chaperoning the joint
field trip over the Cascades to the Seattle Art Museum on a perfect 62degree sun drenched day.
This is the first time that Picasso’s personal private collection has visited
the United States from the Muse National Picasso, Paris’.
This retrospective show of 150 original Picasso art works, including
paintings, drawings and sculptures was a fantastic introduction for our
young creative artists. Students with their sketchbooks in hand were
allowed to wander for over an hour through out the show and do pencil
studies of any work that caught their eye.
Picasso is one of the great masters of the twentieth century, who lived to a
creative old age of 92.
The exhibit: Masterpieces from the Muse National Picasso, Paris runs
through January 17, 2011 at the Seattle Art Museum. Visit the museum
web site for ticket information.

Both the S.A.T. and A.C.T. tests are used for admission into four-year
colleges or universities. Most colleges will accept either test for admissions/
scholarship programs. The tests tend to be significantly different, so students
may wish to take both tests. You may retake a test if you are not satisfied with
your initial results, as only the higher score is considered for both scholarships
and admission purposes. Many of our students are not sure if they will attend
college and others will not know if they can afford to attend until they go
through the financial aid process (F.A.F.S.A) during their senior year. So we
encourage as many students as possible to consider taking these tests.
Sophomores
The PLAN is the practice ACT and will be offered Wednesday,
November 3, 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM in the EHS LGI to sophomores only. The cost
is $11.00 and must be pre-paid.
Seniors:
We recommend seniors retake either or both SAT and ACT in the fall if
they wish to attempt to improve scores earned last spring.. If test were not taken
last spring, take them in early fall.
Juniors and Seniors:
Pay very close attention to the Regular Registration Postmark
Deadline. You can sign up after the regular deadline, but there is a late fee to pay.
Avoid the late fee and register on time. Register on-line or use the registration
forms in the counseling office. Practice questions are available on the website and in
brochures in the counseling office. These tests will be given in the EHS LGI from 8:15
AM -1:30 PM (8:15-12:30 for ACT). Doors open at 7:30 AM.

This year is quickly passing. Grading period 1 has come and
gone. Keeping up with our student’s academics, social
calendar, and other activities sometimes feels impossible. You are the #1
reason students choose not to use alcohol, tobacco, or other
drugs. GREAT JOB PARENTS! I am here again this academic
year to provide support for students, families, and our
community. My time at EHS will be on Thursdays and Fridays, and I will
continue providing education, prevention, and intervention services. There are
times, as families grow, that concerns arise and information about alcohol,
tobacco, or other drugs is needed. I can help, please contact me at 888-1278. I
am grateful to be a part of the Eastmont Team. I look forward to this academic
year, and the opportunity to serve our students, families, and community. Services
provided by your Student Assistant Specialist are confidential.
National survey reveals
increases in substance use from
2008 to 2009 Marijuana use rises;
prescription drug abuse and
ecstasy use also up.
The National Survey on Drug Use and
Health (NSDUH) shows the overall
rate of current illicit drug use in the
United States rose from 8.0 percent
of the population aged 12 and older
in 2008 to 8.7 percent in 2009. This
rise in overall drug use was driven in
large part by increases in marijuana use.

Whooping Cough Lives
Amongst Us! Pertussis, or whooping
NOTES FROM THE NURSE
cough is a bacterial infection that causes prolonged
illness with cough, shortness of breath and can progress
to pneumonia, and death. Before the use of
vaccinations, it was a leading cause of death in children.
Washington, and the nation have seen an increase in
the incidence of pertussis in the past decade. Grant
county has recently been in the local news with cases of pertussis sickening
many people and killing two infants.
The Washington Dept of Health is following CDC guidelines in
recommending that all people under the age of 60 be protected from pertussis
with immunization. The Tdap, which contains tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis is
the vaccine used for all individuals over age 7. High school students in particular
are at higher risk for acquiring the infection since most of them have not been
immunized against pertussis since kindergarten. Check with your doctor. If your
student has not had a tetanus containing vaccine within
the past five years, a Tdap should be given.

Dear Parent or Guardian:
Kathy Robb RN, BSN
The following information is being provided to you at the direction of the
Washington State Legislature to help reduce cervical cancer rates in
Washington by protecting girls from HPV.
What is Human Papillomavirus (HPV)? HPV is a very common
virus that is spread through genital contact. At least 50 percent of sexually
active people will get HPV at some time in their lives. There are many
types of HPV. Some types can cause cervical cancer or genital warts. Both
women and men can get HPV and easily spread it to others without
knowing they have it.
What are the symptoms of HPV? Most people with HPV have no
signs or symptoms. Some people know they have HPV because they have
a symptom like genital warts. Women may find out they have HPV
through cervical cancer screening (Pap tests) and HPV testing. Health care
providers do not usually test for HPV unless abnormal cervical cell
changes are detected by a Pap test.
How can HPV infection be prevented? The best way to prevent HPV infection is
to abstain from all sexual activity. People with only one lifetime partner can get HPV if
their partner had previous sexual partners. It is uncertain how well condoms protect
against HPV infection. However, condom users do have lower cervical cancer rates. The
HPV vaccine is a very effective way to prevent four types of HPV that can cause cervical
cancer and genital warts.
What is the HPV vaccine? The HPV vaccine, Gardasil, ® protects against four
types of HPV which cause 70 percent of cervical cancers and 90 percent of genital
warts. The vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV or other sexually
transmitted infections. The vaccine also does not protect against any type of HPV that
someone already has. Current studies show that HPV vaccine protection lasts up to 5
years. Research will continue to determine the length of the HPV vaccine’s protection.
Who should get the vaccine and when should they get it? The federal Advisory
Committee on Immunization Practices recommends the

HPV vaccine for all girls age 1112 years. The vaccine can also be
given to females as young as nine
and up to 26 years, if their doctor
recommends it. HPV vaccine is
given as a series of three shots
over a six month period. The
vaccine is not currently
recommended for boys or men.
The HPV vaccine is a preventive
vaccine and will offer the best
protection if given before sexual
activity starts. HPV vaccine is not
required for school entry in
Washington.
Are Pap tests still
recommended for females
that get the HPV vaccine?
Yes. The HPV vaccine does not
protect against all of the types of
HPV that can cause cervical
cancer, so females will still need
Pap tests.
Where can I find the HPV
vaccine? Ask your doctor,
nurse, or local health clinic to find
out whether your daughter needs
the HPV vaccine and where you
can get it. Most providers in
Washington will have statesupplied HPV vaccine and there
will be no cost to parents (of girls
under 19 years) for the vaccine.
Providers may charge an office
visit and/or administration fee.
The HPV vaccine is available to
providers at no cost through
Washington State’s Universal
Childhood Vaccine Program.
