MORRIS Back in the ‘60’s, the most famous cat in America was a 14lb orange tabby charmer who was rescued from a Chicago animal shelter, by Bob Martwick, a professional animal trainer. Morris became spokes-cat for Purina’s 9 Lives cat food in 1969, and eventually became honorary director of Star-Kist Foods, with veto power over any cat food flavor he didn’t like. Up until the time he died in 1978, Morris lived with Bob in a Chicago dog kennel where there was never any question as to who was top cat! PET TRIVIA *The USA has the highest cat population in the world with over 76 million. China comes in second with over 53 million. *The first seeing-eye dog was presented to a blind person on April 25, 1938. *Britain’s oldest dog, a Jack Russell called Meg, reached the grand old age of 25 in November 2014 – that’s approximately 113 in dog years! *The burying of bones is part of a dog's instinctive feeding ritual; shaking things viciously is part of the hunting ritual. *Dogs can get toupees in Tokyo. *In the state of Queensland, Australia, it is still constitutional law that all pubs (hotels/bars) must have a railing outside for patrons to tie up their horse. *The oldest horse on record is “Old Billy,” an English barge horse. He was 62 years old when he died, living from 1760 to 1822. *Ben and Jerry's sends the waste from making ice cream to local pig farmers to use as feed. Pigs love the stuff, except for one flavor: Mint Oreo! *There are 18 different muscles that dogs use to move each one of their ears. *The most dogs ever owned by a single person was 5,000 Mastiffs which were owned by Kubla Khan. *Walking backwards is something that both an emu and a kangaroo are not able to do. A Day at the Doggie Spa Swimming/Lazying in the sun/Sleeping All in a Dog’s day at Dioji! Whoever said that dogs can’t have fun away from home didn’t know what they were talking about. At Dioji K9 Resort and Spa, it’s the dog’s that are having all the fun, although I’ve noticed that even the attendants are laughing and smiling while playing with these adorable four-legged canine’s! PAW-SCOPES DOGS This little pup is definitely an attention seeker and all he wants is to spend his waking hours with you and is always ready for his next adventure. At this time of year, remember to keep a towel at your door to wipe their paws because they very often find a mess outside to play in. CATS Strong personality is definitely the trait of this month’s cat. It enjoys playing with lots of toys and is friendly towards other household pets. But periodically, this cat is independent and will need lots of quality time alone. A perfect cat to have if you need to work a lot. DELTA WILL NO LONGER MAKE PETS FLY AS CARGO Following the deaths and disappearances of dozens of pets in the last 10 years, Delta has recently announced that beginning in March of 2016, they will no longer make pets fly in the cargo hold of their passenger planes. “Delta will no longer accept pets as checked baggage, but will continue to transport allowable pets in all cabins of service except Delta One, effective March 1, 2016,” Delta said in a statement. “Customers may also ship pets for travel within the United States as freight through Delta Cargo.” MarketWatch reported that in the past 10 years alone, 74 pets have died and another 14 have gone missing while under Delta’s care. These deaths account for about 25 percent of all airline pet deaths. In 2011, Delta stopped allowing brachycephalic dogs (ones with squished-in faces, like bulldogs and boxers) in the cargo bays because of their difficulty breathing in extreme situations. In cargo, temperature and air pressure can fluctuate, allowing these dogs in particular to succumb to inauspicious circumstances. Unfortunately, large dogs will still not be allowed in the cabin due to their size, but pet owners will be given the option of transporting their dogs via Delta Cargo, which the company says is a safer alternative. “Pets that are transported via Delta Cargo are monitored closely by customer service teams during their travel,” the company said. “While at airports, pets are handled in temperature-controlled holding areas and vans. Also, Delta Cargo enlists professional kenneling services if overnight stays are required.” Members of the military with active transfer orders and people with service and therapy dogs will still be allowed to check their pets as “baggage,” which is a perplexing notion, given that these people need their pets to be with them. “Many of us at Delta are pet lovers and we know that they are important members of the family,” said Bill Lentsch, senior vice president for airport customer service and cargo operations. “This change will ultimately ensure that we have a high-quality, consistent service for pets when their owners choose to ship them with Delta Cargo.” WAY BACK WHEN Each month we list a different breed of dog or cat along with a little of the breed’s history. We hope you will enjoy reading this section. LHASA APSO The Lhasa Apso is originally from the remote mountains of Tibet – particularly near the sacred city of Lhasa – where they were bred as sentinels and companions for temples and Buddhist monasteries, with special efforts taken to fix a type closely resembling a lion in color and shape. The breed’s keen intelligence, sharp bark, acute hearing and innate ability to distinguish friend from foe made them perfectly suited to these tasks. The origin of the Lhasa Apso is not clear. Some experts suggest that the smallest puppies of the larger Tibetan Terrier sheepdogs, whose legs were too short to make them effective flock herders, were given to the monks and became foundation stock for the breed. Others say that this is complete conjecture. The word “apso,” which is not Tibetan but rather Mongolian, suggests a northern component to the breed. The monks selectively and purely bred these dogs for centuries and jealously guarded them from outside influence. Legend has it that when a monk (lama, or priest) died but did not reach Nirvana, he was reincarnated as one of the sacred monastery dogs. Occasionally, between the 16th and 20th centuries, the Dalai Lamas (the spiritual leaders of Tibet) presented small lion dogs as gifts to the Imperial families of China and to other dignitaries, as tokens of peace, prosperity and good fortune. These Lhasas were incorporated into strains of small Chinese dogs, no doubt contributing to the formation of the Shih Tzu and the Pekingese. Before the 1930s, both the Lhasa Apso (a monastery dog) and the larger Tibetan Terrier (a working sheepdog) were referred to as “Tibetan Terriers,” which causes confusion when exploring the history of both breeds. Because they were so closely guarded in Tibet, the Lhasa Apso was late to become well-known among outside dog fanciers. One or two may have filtered out of Tibet in the 1800s, as Victorian paintings occasionally depict dogs quite similar to the Lhasa. Serious breeding outside of Tibet began around the turn of the century, when British explorers and emissaries brought them back from travels to Tibet. The Kennel Club in London recognized the Lhasa Apso in 1908 as the “Lhasa Terrier, 10-inch type,” to distinguish it from the taller and leggier “Lhasa Terrier, 14-inch type.” World War I nearly decimated the breed, but it reappeared in the 1920s. In 1922, Colonel and Mrs. Eric Bailey acquired a pair of Lhasas when they lived on the Tibetan border in Sikkim. They returned to their English homeland in 1928 with six of their sturdy little dogs, which they showed as the “Lhasa Terrier, 10-inch type” for several years. The Kennel Club (England) finally decided to separate the Lhasa Apso from the larger Tibetan Terrier in 1934. Unfortunately, World War II was a roadblock to implementation of this change, and the breed descended into near obscurity. After the war, fanciers slowly rebuilt the Lhasa Apso breed, which finally achieved Championship eligibility in the Kennel Club (England) in 1965. The breed fared somewhat better in the United States, where it gained a firm foothold during the 1930s and 1940s. During that time, the thirteenth Dalai Lama presented at least three Lhasa Apsos to Mr. and Mrs. Suydam Cutting of New Jersey. Three more quickly followed, and together they formed the foundation of the breed in North America. The American Kennel Club recognized the Lhasa Apso in 1935; today, it is one of three breeds of Tibetan ancestry being shown in the Non-Sporting Group. During the rest of the 20th century, the Lhasa Apso rose exponentially in popularity, until it became one of the most sought-after of all small dogs world-wide. A Lhasa took Best in Show at the Crufts World Dog Show in 1984. Modern Lhasa Apsos thrive equally on large estates and in tiny apartments. They continue their service as sentinels, spirited show dogs and beloved companions in the United States and many other countries. The breed’s highly acute sense of hearing also makes them highly valued as service dogs for the deaf. Greyfriars Bobby is a statue in Edinburgh, dedicated to a loyal Skye Terrier named Bobby. When his owner, John Gray, died in 1858, Bobby refused to leave Gray’s graveside for any length of time. Dogs weren’t technically allowed at the graveyard, but Bobby touched the hearts of locals who built him a shelter and rallied for him to stay. Unbelievably, he lay on the grave for 14 years, only leaving for food. Bobby continued guarding the grave until he died in 1872, aged 16. Bobby is buried in the same graveyard as Gray, in Greyfriars Kirkyard, which you can also visit. What love and devotion our four-legged friends give us. The low end of the range is similar: 67 Hz, but dogs hear noises up to 45 kHz, while humans only hear sounds up to about 23 kHz. This means that they could be hearing and responding to sounds that we can't hear at all. Cats can hear higher-pitched sounds than either dogs or humans, detecting frequencies from 55 Hz up to 79 kHz (a range of 10.5 octaves). Jackson's strong personality and personal code of conduct earned him the nickname "Old Hickory." ANDREW JACKSON 7TH PRESIDENT (1829-1837) Birth: March 15, 1767 at Lancaster County, South Carolina Death: June 8, 1845 at Hermitage (Nashville), Tennessee Nearly all U.S. presidents found a common way to relax and unwind during their time in the White House by spending time with presidential pets. President Andrew Jackson was no exception to this rule, keeping several notable pets during his time in office. Jackson had several notable pets. He was fond of horses, owning so many that he had to ask Congress for approval to build new, more spacious stables. One inhabitant of these new stables was Sam Patch, Jackson's horse, a gift received during his presidency. The horse was named after a popular daredevil of the time who made several jumps into the Niagara River near the base of Niagara Falls. Jackson also had several SAM PATCH racehorses, including the fillies Emily, Lady Nashville, and Bolivia, but the most famous by far was Thruxton. Jackson was so fond of his beloved racehorse that, when a race between Thruxton and another undefeated horse was canceled and the forfeit fee was disputed, he got into a deadly duel that ended with the other horse's owner's son-in -law, Charles Dickinson, dead and with a bullet permanently lodged in his own chest. Jackson also had a pet parrot named Poll. Originally a gift for his wife, Rachel, the bird came under Jackson's care after his wife's death. Given his rough and tough nature, it is no surprise that the parrot added some vulgar words to its vocabulary. This fact became problematic at Jackson's funeral when the bird began cursing so continuously and loudly that it had to be removed from the building. The nation's seventh president, Jackson is regarded as a tough, strong-willed man. Born in 1767, the White House reports that he did not attend school regularly while growing up. Still, he read law on his own for two years and became a respected lawyer in Tennessee, according to the White House Historical Association. He rose to national fame when, as a major general in the War of 1812, he defeated the British. Jackson was a presidential candidate in the election of 1824. Although John Quincy Adams won that year, Jackson felt he had only done so with the backing of Henry Clay, a candidate -turned-supporter who ultimately became Adams's secretary of state. Feeling that a corrupt bargain – support for a high position – had taken place between the two, Jackson started his campaign against Adams almost immediately and won the next two elections, serving as president DID YOU KNOW…? Jackson’s White House inaugural ball was the first one open to the public. Jackson was popular with the common constituents, and many chose to come to the ball. The entire party ended up being a wild affair, with the phrase “drunken mob” often used to describe it. Jackson believed that the electoral vote should be abolished and that both presidential and vice presidential candidates should be elected by popular vote. He not only survived an attempted assassination, but Jackson, then 67 years old, beat up his would-be assassin himself after the man’s two guns misfired.
