Letter from the President
As we near the second anniversary of opening our Interfaith Hospitality Network, I am
continually amazed at the commitment of so many people that made this organization work
in 2014. I am thankful for our volunteers and faith communities for their generosity and
service. Over the course of the year, you provided three meals a day and a warm place to
sleep to homeless families with nowhere else to turn. You provided thousands of volunteer
hours. You provided encouragement and a smile for stressed parents. All of you are truly
making a difference in the lives of others. In 2014 we welcomed St. Thomas Aquinas
Church, Derry, NH as our newest host congregation. I've had the good fortune to meet their
clergy and numerous parishioners at meetings, info sessions and training. Their energy and
enthusiasm is contagious.
I am thankful for our many financial contributors, large and small. Because of your passion
for our mission, we are able to keep our doors open so the work can continue. We have an
amazing depth and breadth of donors, ranging from individuals giving a few dollars up to
multiple thousands of dollars. In addition to the support from individuals, we received
funding from numerous grants, towns, companies, congregations, private fund-raising
events, and of course, our fabulous Gala held this past November.
I am thankful for the commitment of my fellow board members. You have been amazing
workers, upholding the vision and mission of this great program. Three board members,
Melanie Nesheim, Mary Hamblett, and Susan Quaranta, retired off the board after years of
service. All three were here, dreaming and planning, well before we opened our doors. Their
dedication and efforts were crucial in getting this program up and running, and making it
through the early years. In 2014 and early 2015 we also welcomed new board members
Randy Brown, Kati Ofcarcik, and Paul Canty. Each of your skill sets, personality, and
passion for this program will add to the board's ability to provide oversight, governance and
guidance. Welcome.
To our Day Center staff, I thank you for working to transform the lives of parents and
children while taking care of hundreds of day-to-day details. I'd like to officially welcome
Margaret Doughty, who has recently taken the position of Director of the Interfaith
Hospitality Network, previously held by Victoria McKinney-Vareschi. Maggie came to us as a
part-time case manager in April, working with our other part-time case manager Sarah
George, who was with us nearly all year. The board’s personnel committee, and our office
volunteer extraordinaire of 1-1/2 years, Kathy Todd, worked closely with Maggie through the
transition to Network Director. I am now looking forward to working with her to build upon
the foundation laid so far.
Because of the generosity of our donors, we have the budget to add a full-time case manager
in 2015. One of Maggie's first tasks will be to hire a person into this role. Under Maggie's
leadership, our staff will continue to refine our intake and case management processes to
deliver strength-based case management, concentrating on finding work and finding housing.
We are introducing a new financial literacy program designed specifically for Family Promise.
We are improving the quality of aftercare to those families who graduate from our program.
And so the work continues. Because of the efforts of all of you—donors, board members,
host coordinators, meal providers, overnight hosts, staff, fundraisers, grant agencies, towns,
and community organizations—we are able to provide a place to call home to families as we
work diligently to get those families back into permanent housing. Thank you.

Building Community, Strengthening Lives
Network Director’s Review
What an amazing year this has been at Family Promise of Greater Rockingham County!
Coming into the program as a Case Manager, then taking on the role of Network Director, I
was able to learn all aspects of this program. What impressed me most was that a nonprofit—in existence for two years—was able to sustain itself and come out of 2014 standing
quite sturdy. The generous donations from the community, our Sustainers (monthly donors),
the Annual Gala, the grants received, and the town funding allowed us to end the year with
strength. We increased our revenue from last year in part by obtaining new donors that
became aware of our program and saw the proven successes our program provides.
Since joining Family Promise in April 2014 I have been part of four families graduating, one
mom becoming a full time student, and one family moving to California to be closer to her
family. The bonds the families make with each other stay strong even when one leaves the
program to live outside of Family Promise.
October brought the Family Promise National Conference where a new financial literacy
program was rolled out. The direction this takes will provide the families with a strong
financial foundation to carry with them when leaving the program. The financial literacy
program is taught by two volunteers: Richard Cardner of Londonderry and Paul Canty who
works for the IRS and joined the board in 2015.
We are reviewing and revamping our current intake forms to make them more streamlined
and we are creating a handbook for our guests when they enter our program. Judy Nelson,
also on our board, is instrumental in assisting me with this task.
We have been present at various farmers markets, Rotary Club meetings, Chamber of
Commerce meetings, Derry Fest, and Pelham Old Home Days, and are looking forward to
participating in many more activities in 2015.
Our guest families enjoyed BBQs and field trips in the warmer months. In September we
enjoyed an evening at the Greatest Show on Earth—Barnum and Bailey Circus at the Verizon
Center in Manchester, NH. October saw the families and the Day Center busy with national
Family Promise Week, culminating in a community dinner. A spectacular evening of musical
talent was put on by Let’s Play Music, benefiting Family Promise. The families enjoyed a field
trip to Mack’s Apples to pick pumpkins for decorating and carving, and apples for apple
crisps and candied apples.
November was holiday fun. A huge Thanksgiving meal was provided to the families and
Christmas snowflakes were cut out and hung up in the Day Center. Our annual Gala was
held November 7th at the Atkinson Country Club, with so much talent from the children who
performed and from our special guest, Miss New Hampshire Megan Cooley.
December was a whirlwind of fun decorating the Day Center and holding a cookie swap and a
wrap party for the families, with paper, ribbons and bows. The host coordinators reached out
to their congregations and raised over $1,000.00 in gift cards. We provided our four resident
families and three graduated families with these gift cards to buy presents for their children.
We received an outpouring of donations from the community, such as The Lions Club,
Windham Cub Scouts, Sargent Santa, and the Heritage Quilters Guild to name a few. We
were serenaded by TCLC carolers and had dinner and stories with Mrs. Claus!

As Network Director I am excited for 2015. We are hiring a full time Case Manager. This will
allow more follow-up with our families and more concentration on building their foundations.
It will allow our Host Sites a much more open line of communication regarding our guests,
and allow Family Promise to follow our graduates more closely, dedicating more time to them.
We have a new host congregation, Pleasant Street United Methodist Church in Salem, NH,
who should be able to start hosting July 2015. We will be actively visiting churches to recruit
additional new host sites for our guests.
The Fund Development committee has some great ideas on making the community more
aware of Family Promise and the work we do. This should help to increase our donations so
we can provide more support for the future families that will come into our program.
Most of all I look forward to seeing the families grow—seeing the weight on their shoulders,
that they carry in through our doors on day one, start to ease. I look forward to seeing them
become stronger in their belief that they can accomplish tasks needed to be stable outside of
Family Promise. I look forward to sharing their tears and their laughter and their growth!

A Volunteer’s Voice
By Peggy Baker
Host Coordinator at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Hampstead, NH
My journey began one Sunday in 2012 when Bob Stift came to talk to our parishioners. I
already knew I wanted to volunteer, but Bob stated they needed someone to be the host
coordinator [organize all the volunteers at the host congregation to set up bedrooms at the
church facility for Host Week, provide meals, and staff overnights].
After talking with my husband after church that Sunday, I decided to volunteer. It was the
beginning of a roller coaster ride. I had a great response by volunteers from our parish and
other local churches, and from some who were not church goers but wanted to help. We got
all our supplies; then came our first host week in 2013. There was only one family at first,
but soon we were up to 3 and 4 families. It was very challenging that first year and I had just
about given up when things changed, and everyone pitched in to make the program work.
It has been a joy in 2014 to help the families get back on their feet. It is so rewarding when a
child crawls up on your lap and says he or she loves you, or when an 11-year-old always
says, “Thank you,” for her meal. At the end of the week it is sad to see them go. There is
always a hug and “Thank you” from the families. One teenager calls me her friend, and it
makes me feel so very thankful that I did not give up, and to know that we are making a
difference in their lives. One family moved out-of-state. I think of the older boy, who was like
a father to his siblings, and wonder how he is doing and hope he is able to be a boy at last.
One night, a family brought myself and another host coordinator a plant and a cake that
said, “Thank you for all you do,” a very touching gesture from someone who had so little.
This journey has been wonderful due to the support of the board, Network Director, and
other host coordinators, and mostly due to the best volunteers ever.
A Guest’s Perspective
By Margaret Doughty, Network Director
Both current and past guests were asked to provide their perspective on how Family Promise
has affected their lives.
One of our current guests states that the support she received from Family Promise gave her
the courage to return to school full time while working part time. Her children feel we are
providing a home for them and their mom until they can get their own apartment.
Our recent graduate said it was a rough road when she entered the program. She did not
know what to expect, especially with congregate living. She came to realize the stability the
program offered, and she has made lasting relationships with her “flamily”, a term she and
the other families coined to express their connection with each other.
A past graduate—who stays in touch and visits quite often—recently had some stressors in
her life. She stated she was grateful to have Family Promise to help her research possible
solutions and problem-solve. Without the gift cards from Family Promise she said she would
not be able to provide a Christmas for her children. She feels we are her emotional “safety
net” when life becomes overwhelming.

There are countless other stories and comments that fuel us all at Family Promise to
continue to provide the best possible guidance we can for the families that come through our
door. Once they come to us, the guests become our teachers and they don’t even realize it!
