CAPITOL CARVERS January 2014
CAPITOL WOODCARVERS Salem, Oregon April 2014 http://capitolwoodcarvers.org President's Message April is here and we have already completed one of our most successful Carving Shows to date. The weather cooperated with us as it was just wet enough on Saturday to keep people in town and away from all the places we like to go to when the weather turns nice. Sunday was a smaller number of visitors but that seems to be the normal way it has been going over the last couple of years plus the weather turned beautiful with that bright orb in the sky which I think people call the sun. I talked with our vendors and they were pleased with the number of people and their sales and related that they truly enjoyed the show. The Auction was a great success and once again we want to thank Dave Disselbrett and Don Curry for their great work. The dinner prior to the Auction was exceptional thanks to our Vice President Jack Dalton and his group of volunteers. The budget for the meal was very close to last years despite inflation and some added goodies. The raffle was a huge success thanks to Patty Ashford, Laurie Ladd and Bob Fisher who worked hard both days selling tickets and organizing the donations. Oddly enough no one asked Laurie to do the arm stretch of tickets for them. The ribbon awards went smoothly due to a number of volunteers including Charlie Henry and Denise Burnett and several others who I apologize for not naming. A list of the winners should appear in this news letter. Congratulations to all. Once again thanks to Everett Koontz and Lou Wakefield and all the people that helped make this one of the best shows ever. A special thanks to the Salem Center staff for all their assistance, they came in early and stayed late and did a great job which was appreciated beyond a simple thank you. 2O14 OFFICERS President Frank Campbell 503-463-6411 Vice President Jack Dalton 503-588-1404 Treasurer Bill Grater Secretary Donna Miller Newsletter Bob Harris Librarian Bob Fisher Web Master Bob Curtis Members at Large Jim Harris Ken Lake Dave Disselbrett Denis Miller If I have left anyone out I want to thank you for your hard work. See you all at the meeting and don't forget to bring a carving to share and a smile on your face, after all you are a member of one of the greatest clubs in Oregon. Historian Everett Koontz Frank Campbell 1 CLUB MEETINGS (Last Tuesday of the month, except for no meetings in August and December) Our featured presenter in April will be Jeff Harness. Jeff will be talking about the Male / Female Facial Proportions "Similarities & Differences". No carving knives will be needed for this presentation. You might want to be sure to bring note taking materials with you. Jeff got his start by taking classes from Kelley Stadelman, Dave Disselbret, and Terry Kramer, all Oregon carvers, then went on to study under Marv Kaisersatt, Nora Hall and others. His greatest influence came from classes with Jeff Phares and Phillip Faraut, masters of the human face and expression. While Jeff has carved many different subjects from dragons and gargoyles to bears, eagles and dolphins, in-the-round and relief, he prefers to specialize in realistic head busts. More recently his focus is upon the ethnic tribes of the North American continent. His goal is to not only accurately represent the specific tribal facial features, but to capture emotions appropriate to the subject matter. He has taught classes for our Capitol Carvers here in Salem. He currently resides in Hillsboro, Oregon and teaches wood carving at the Valley Art Gallery in Forest Grove.
