In the early 90’s, Chrystal and her three
younger siblings were pulled out of a difficult
situation and placed at Salem. The largest sibling group
ever placed with us, Chrystal and her siblings made Salem their home
for several years. Always a
blessing to be around, Chrystal
was known as a sweetheart,
always working hard and
encouraging her siblings to
make good decisions. Back
then, when she was preparing
to leave Salem, she wrote:
“I know wherever I go in life,
I’ll be sure to make those right
decisions and take that right
path. I’ll be a winner and not
give up in the bad times. I’ll make each day a new start and a new step
in my life. I’ll try to forget the past, even though it’s hard. I have to move
on, because I have a life of my own now, and I want to be somebody.”
After years of life passing us by, Chrystal
reached out to us on Facebook. “With
tears filling our eyes, Maria and I were
captivated by pictures of Chrystal’s
beautiful family,” said Todd Mechem.
A flurry of messages were exchanged
that wonderful Saturday morning, with
Chrystal saying: “…I am so happy I found
y’all! I have been looking for
everyone I can think of that
was a blessing to me in my
time at Salem. I thank God
for such beautiful people as
you. I have missed you all so
much….”

Carolina with their six kids

our greatest struggles over the years has been keeping our
roads in good condition. The largest portion of our roads is still
dirt, requiring frequent maintenance. Not only does the road need
maintenance, but our vans do as well, absorbing a great deal of wear
and tear. Ultimately, all this money spent on repairs could be
spent blessing our kids, sending them on a missions trip, or
providing other incredible experiences for them. Therefore, we
decided to launch a campaign to raise the funds to meet this
improvement dream. We need your help! The estimated cost to
pave Salem’s nearly 6,000 feet of dirt roads is $150,000.
That seems like a lot, but broken down, it’s only around $25 per foot.
If everyone receiving this newsletter donated, our project
would be fully funded! Will you consider sponsoring a few feet?
To kick start our campaign, AES Warrior Run has generously
offered the first $2000 dolllars in contributions. If you or
your business would like to offer matching funds toward
our project we will publicize on Facebook and Twitter.
Our campaign deadline is June 30th, in time for
the warm months when we can begin our project.

Cindy Schartiger of Standard Bank presented Todd
Mechem and Kristen Fischetti a check on behalf of

sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), a condition in which

emergencies are never planned, but we are happy to be prepared, should the need
ever arise to protect our children from SCA. Thank you Hopey’s Heart!

“Share the Love”
Campaign
The Customer Care Center staff of First United Bank & Trust, located in
Oakland, MD, recently campaigned within their office to donate a wide
collection of items for the children’s homes. Items purchased were
stuffed animals, fuzzy socks, blankets, board games, body wash, mattress
pad covers, sheet sets, lamps, rugs and comforters.
Development Director, Kristen Fischetti (far right) was pleased to accept a generous
gift from Candy McNair and First United Bank & Trust employees after their “Share

Celebrating Christmas with
Salem Children for 22 years
The annual WCBC
“Christmas for the Kids”
was a hit, as always! The
Ramada Inn of Cumberland
hosted the event again this
year. The Salem Children’s Choir,
Three Katz N a Mouse, and
Roger and Debbie Williamson
provided entertainment for
the evening, and there was a
seemingly endless buffet of pizza,
chicken wings and much more,
generously provided by a variety
of local businesses. Extras, like a
photobooth and hot chocolate
bar, enhanced the celebration.
Our kids were so blessed by the
generosity of the host families
and the love shown for them
during the Christmas season
when many of them are not able
to be with their families.
One of the greatest pleasures of the
last few years for my wife and I have
been sponsoring a Salem child for the
WCBC Christmas party for the kids. Over
the years, we have sponsored three
different kids as they have grown out
of the program and been replaced by
new kids. Each has been a blessing. As a
parent, I have been blessed to see my own
children’s joy on Christmas morning, but
it is even more special to see the joy on a
child’s face as they experience a Christmas
unlike any they have ever known before.
No other Christmas experience I have
ever known has meant more to us in
terms of experiencing the true meaning of
Christmas. The kids are overwhelmed, and
we are overwhelmed by their thankfulness
and gratitude. They are so polite,
respectful and grateful for every gift, large
and small, that it truly warms the heart. Thank you,
WCBC, for putting this together. We are thankful to
be a small part of the party, and it is a privilege to
be a big part of one child’s Christmas. And, thank
you Salem staff, for all you do for these beautiful
kids.
Sincerely, Terry and Darlene Russell

Work Day at Salem - Lend a Helping Hand!
Our annual work day at Salem is just around the corner. We need
volunteers to help keep our facilities in good shape. We plan to clean
the school, paint the exterior of some of the children’s homes and
maintain the grounds after the spring thaw. If your group would like to
lend a hand, or schedule their own work day, please call 301-689-8176.
7th Annual Sam & Judy Reckley Honorary Golf Scramble
The event consists of a round of golf (Shotgun Start), lunch, and prizes for 1st and 2nd place teams,
as well as individuals for the Best Ball, Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin and $20,000 Hole in One.
Each year has been a wonderful time of fellowship. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us.
For registration and sponsorship information, please contact Kristen at 301-689-8176, ext. 208
Cookout, Concert & Family Day
New to 2015! We are celebrating family this summer with a day out that everyone can enjoy.
We plan to have a 1 mile fun run in the morning, good food throughout the day, games, tournaments,
and an outdoor concert to continue into the evening. Plan to bring your family for part, or all, of the
day to benefit kids that are learning what family is all about. All proceeds go to support our program,
as we provide a home and family for children who’ve been abused, abandoned, or neglected.
The 20th Annual Outspokin’ for Kids Banquet
Twenty years of supporting kids through the Outspokin’ for Kids Banquet culminates in a great evening
celebrating the work Salem is doing for our kids. This year, we plan to reflect on the many lives that have been
transformed as a result of Salem. Come enjoy good food and hear inspiring stories from kids and staff that take
us through the years. Our auction will continue its own tradition of high quality items, all to support a great
cause. Call 301-689-8176, ext. 208, to reserve your table early as we are expecting a full house.

Celebrating 20 years with Salem
In Memory of Ann Brown - December 7, 1925 - November 1, 2014
Ann Marie Friedrich Brown was a long time friend of Salem, and
we wish to express our condolences to her surviving daugthers,
Jeanne Brown Tabscott and Marit Brown Hammond, and many
other family members throughout the country.
Ann was remembered for her kind words, her love of gardening,
and her love of new ideas and meeting personal challenges.
We can only imagine her joyful reunion now with Loy, her
husband of 44 years, as he had passed away in 1994.
Thank you for the memorial contributions given to Salem in her name!

Ready for Warmth and Sunshine
Thanks to Ken and Lee Fisher who donated a
outbuilding for our greenhouse. The Fishers
also helped our kids in the 2014 Summer
Program work on insulating the base of
the greenhouse so that we can heat the
floors. This will extend our growing season,
which, in turn, expands our educational
opportunities.
Happy at the Horse Barn
José was more than happy to show off his new
winter turnout blanket on a nice winter day this
February, as he got out to enjoy the sunshine. The
Equestrian Program has been blessed to purchase
new riding helmets and thermal riding boots for
use in the program. The kids have been thrilled
to groom cleaner horses, as well as keeping safe
and warm during their time at the barn. Thank
you, Chi Sigma Sorority, for your generosity in filing
these needs in memory of Elsie Pank!
