Our Outspokin’ Banquet is our biggest
fundraiser of the year for the last 20 years.
To celebrate the 20th Annual Outspokin’ Banquet, we will focus on the ministry
and service Salem offers to our children and the impact we are making on their
young lives. Please come and learn more about the heart behind everything
we do and bring others who have a heart for kids and are looking for a way to
get involved. You will be blessed by attending.
Each year, our silent auction features a wide variety of baskets, handmade
items, and gift certificates. It is a great way to donate and also leave with a
meaningful gift, or two, for yourself or someone special.
Outspokin’ for Kids Banquet
Five o’clock, Saturday, September 26th at
Bittinger Mennonite Church Center
10707 Bittinger Road
Bittinger, Maryland 21522
Please mark your calendars to join us for this special event. Sell a table of
eight tickets for a donation of $250 (that’s a $30 savings). Reserve your tickets
via the form on page 6. Please RSVP by September 15th so that we can advise
our caterer. Contact Kristen Fischetti, Development Director, for more info:
301.689.8176 ext. 208, or [email protected].

Volunteers
Catholic Heart
Work Camp
volunteers came
this July to help
for several days.
Thank you for
the help!
Thanks again, for
the continued hard
work, Miss Ruth
Beckman (not
pictured) to help
our girls learn to
quilt. They will
never forget your
efforts and your
kindness!
Michael and Laura of
Cyogenics worked with
First Book to donate a wide variety of
new books for our library! It will be such
a blessing for the upcoming school year.
They also coordinated with Level the
Playing Field to donate bags and bags
of used sporting goods. Roy, our lead
resource counselor, (pictured above) could
hardly believe his own eyes! Thank You!
Mr. and Mrs. Donaldson of Crossroads
Church invited us to come pick
Blueberries! Not only was it a fun
activity, but the kids got to learn how
to make their own tasty pies!
During their week of volunteer service
here at Salem, Catholic Heart Work Camp
volunteers built forms and
poured a new sidewalk
for our Paul House
Office building.
They also cleared
brush from along
our driveway,
painted several
rooms and spent
time with the kids.
Thank you
for your
time and
generosity!

Fall 2015
2015 Summer Program
Salem School’s Summer Wilderness
Program was a resounding success!
Special thanks goes to the Huebner
family for their generous donation in
memory of their son, Daniel. Daniel
was an avid outdoors enthusiast and
would have loved seeing the kids learn
to appreciate their natural surroundings.
Each day, our kids learned something
new about how to enjoy nature and how to do it safely. Highlights included fire
safety and learning how to cook “mountain pies” (toasted fruit filled sandwiches),
building and naming their own camps, hiking, and much more.
Each morning included staff members commending each child on something
they had done well the day before and teaching them values, such as teamwork,
perseverance, and patience. The children worked hard throughout the summer
to earn the privelege of going on the final camping trip, two nights and three
days hiking through a local state forrest. The trails were challenging
and included many creek crossings along the way. The kids took the
challenges in stride, including various rain showers and steep inclines.
The views were well
worth the hike, and our
kids came back to Salem
more determined to work
together as a team. We are
excited for what the future
holds for this program!
Staff and kids worked hard to build
permanent camp sites (see photo above),
trails and camp fire circles this summer, and
then learned wilderness skills, such as fire
safety (middle) and water purification.

Congratulations Niko!
Mrs. Dana McGregor,
Education Director
awards Nikolai
his diploma for
completion of Salem
School this summer.
Salem students enjoyed the graduation picnic for Niko in June. Volleyball,
great weather, good food, and the end to another great school year were
plenty of reasons to celebrate. The summer flew, and the Class of 2016 is
already back to school, working hard on earning their own diplomas!
