REDLANDS ROUND TABLE www.redlandsroundtable.org SPARKS FROM THE SWORD Vol. LXI No. 2 Affiliated with Loyal Knights of the Round Table February 2012 Incoming President Sir Jerry Burgess, left, thanks outgoing President Sir Ken Stanford for his service as commander-in-chief of Redlands Round Table for 2011, at our luncheon Jan. 3. On Jan. 10, BSA Scoutmaster Jesse Lopez and a couple of assistant scoutmasters from the Inland Empire Council of the Boy Scouts talked about the latest trends in apparel and merit badges. Above, Sir Jerry Burgess (left) gives certificate. At left, Bob MacIntyre (left) gives a certificate to our first speaker of the year, Dr. Wolf Kirsch, who spoke about the effects of Alzheimer’s. 1 Redlands Round Table’s board of directors for Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 of 2012 are: Sir Jerry Burgess, president; Sir Bob MacIntyre, president-elect; Sir John Hoghaug, first vice president; Sir Bud Perry, secretary; and Sir Reg Shaleski, treasurer. Absent: Board Members Sirs Ken Stanford, Bertin Hall, and Francis Wiley. Meeting was called to order at 1:20 p.m. by Present Jerry Burgess. Minutes: There were no minutes for December 2011. Treasurer’s Report: Sir Dick Nelson (after 20 years service) handed out the financial overview to incoming treasurer Sir Reg Shaleski. We started 2011 with $1,832.06 and ended December 2011 with $1,309.97. OLD BUSINESS So far $250 has been allocated and paid to our waitresses as a 2011 gratuity. An additional collection from members netted $295 for the gratuity thus far. Any excess above the $250 (which will be repaid to our budget) will be given directly to our regular waitresses. NEW BUSINESS The board will solicit a subcommittee to develop a budget for a February 2012 review. Sirs Jerry Burgess, Jon Hoghaug, and Reg Shaleski will review potential 2012 expenses with Finance planning meeting to be held on January 10, 2012. Sir Jamey Heiss will report on the best time (dates) for the Annual International 2012 Convention to be hosted by the Redlands Roundtable. Sir Jamey is the Convention Committee Chair and has tentatively identified Sept. 20-23, 2012, with September 27-30 as alternative dates, at the San Diego Bahia Hotel. Members input for activities is solicited - please contact Jamey with ideas or comments. It has been suggested, as a way to get better acquainted with each other, that each member, sometime during their birth month, provide a “Quote of the Day” at our meetings (also why this particular quote has meaning for them). Also, members are encouraged to share their recent travels/trips as the weekly program. You know that the “Knights got talent.” Sir Bob Breszny has bound copies of the Sparks going back to around 1995. The suggestion is to give these copies to Smiley Library archives. However, the chapter loses “control” of these records once donated. Any other ideas or comments? Respectfully Submitted: — Bud Perry, Secretary In Search of the Grail About five years ago or so, when Redlands Round Table members under my direction coordinated the International Convention, I remember suggesting having it in Redlands. The idea was shot down pretty quickly, as members strongly believed that Redlands does not represent what visitors envision when they come to vacation in California. There is a lack of faith that people will come to Redlands for a convention, because it’s not an internationally recognized city. I’m told that our table has never actually hosted the annual convention here. The slightly lesser-attended mid-year convention has been hosted in Redlands. Sir Jerry Burgess appointed me as the convention chair again; and this time, I stand firm that our unique city can pull off a convention. We all know there are plenty of wonderful places, programs and events in “Our Town” that make this historic college town unique and special; and while we will share these features with our visiting guests, may I point out that the primary mission for our convention is business, and the future of Round Table. The convention is not so much about pleasure and vacations, and I imagine that Round Table business should be a primary priority irregardless of where the convention is held. As I am a working man, it is honestly convenient for me to work locally. I welcome ideas and suggestions for topics that should be discussed during the convention. And I welcome members of Redlands and San Gorgonio Pass to join me on the committee—please contact me directly. The Round Table board of directors will not be responsible for running the convention. This falls on the shoulders of the committee, and we look forward to your participation Sept. 27-29. -Sir David James Heiss Accolades and Adulation Happy birthday to those who celebrate theirs in February: Sirs Gene Oullette (Feb. 9), Sir Bill Christensen (Feb. 10), and Sir Bud Kensok (Feb. 23).
