WELCOME
LETTER FROM JOSH COHEN
Dear Film Enthusiasts,
Welcome to the Annapolis Film Festival! Annapolis may be a small city, but we are grateful to be in a vibrant community of visual
and performing arts. We are so proud to host this festival and offer access to some of the world’s most creative films and film creators.
While you are here, you will see films of all kinds, from shorts to feature length, from documentary to student and environmental.
I’m looking forward to the special showcase of films with a tie to Maryland. And, be sure not to miss the social and educational opportunities offered as well. You’ll hear from the filmmakers themselves as well as industry professionals commenting on the film you’ve just
seen. All in Annapolis!
As you move from film venue to venue, be sure to allow time to enjoy our town’s authentic hospitality. You will be tempted by our
City’s charming restaurants, interesting museums and boutique stores. Go ahead and enjoy them!
As you head downtown, pause a moment to stand on Church Circle at the top of Main Street to take in the water view that has
been enjoyed by visitors since 1650. It’s a memory you’ll take home along with a commitment to return to the Annapolis Film Festival
next year!
See you at the movies!
Best wishes,
Joshua J. Cohen
Mayor
LETTER FROM THE BOARD
Dear Annapolitans,
We are pleased to welcome you to the Annapolis Film Festival—more than two years and thousands of volunteer hours in the making. As a non-profit, we have relied heavily on the unflagging support of local businesses and organizations, and the arts community, to
transform our vision into reality. Everyone has stepped up to the plate. Just take a look at the many restaurants, hotels, churches and
theatres displaying our posters and helping us in other ways to promote the Festival. We tip our hats to the City of Annapolis which has
worked tirelessly with our volunteers, offering support and advice while greasing the wheels to help launch the Festival.
Speaking of volunteers, we would not have arrived at this stage without the dedication and hard work of so many talented people.
With passion and generosity, they have given of themselves in countless ways that have made this a joyful journey. Our volunteer’s
sense of mission and belief in what the Festival is trying to achieve have far exceeded our expectations.
Our goal is to make the Annapolis Film Festival a cornerstone cultural event for Annapolis. All the ingredients are in place to “bring
it home.”
We have:
2
•
A beautiful city that is a popular travel destination
•
Residents who are excited about welcoming this unique creative experience
•
A wildly enthusiastic business community
•
An arts district that will be further energized throughout the 4-day festival
•
Filmmakers who express our concerns and celebrate our humanity
•
Films that give us diverse viewpoints about the world we live in
ANNAPOLIS FILM FESTIVAL
WELCOME
The Annapolis Film Festival is the vehicle that drives these opportunities. We hope you enjoy the Festival. Take advantage of the many
sights and sounds packed into the 4-day Festival. Support our efforts to expand on our initial hosting of a world-class film festival. May
this be the first year of an ongoing and blossoming Annapolis Film Festival.
Now it’s time to dim the lights.

LETTER FROM The Creative Directors
Hello,
As filmmakers, we have traveled this country over the years screening our own film at numerous film festivals. Our dream has long
been to bring our community of Annapolis, Maryland, a fresh and bold way to view and embrace film by creating a festival in the heart of
our arts district. Our goal also included making the festival “filmmaker friendly “so the artists would feel welcomed and respected. We
wanted to invite our Maryland audience, while attracting filmmakers from all over the world, because we knew that sharing the diverse
artistic talents of so many interesting, unique and forward-thinking filmmakers would leave a lasting impact on Annapolis.
Film is an inspiring medium that can entertain us while crossing boundaries, challenging our perspectives and speaking to our
hearts. As filmgoers, we all hope to be part of these extraordinary and provocative cinematic experiences.
We also hope that the conversation, reflection and participation will become second nature to our community, as we look forward
to the Annapolis Film Festival becoming a permanent part of our town’s cultural landscape.
What was once a fantasy has been made real. Supported from the start by a strong core of volunteers with creative minds, limitless
energy and passion, the festival is truly a community-wide effort. A strong, dedicated Board of Directors leads the commitment and high
level of talent that has built this foundation from the ground up.
As with the filmmaking process, a creative idea takes form. We invite you to join us for 4 days, 90 films, 8 panels and unforgettable
moments.
To film lovers everywhere, the Annapolis Film Festival is here to stay!

greatest rock and roll band.” This landmark documentary follows the Rolling Stones on their 1969 U.S. tour that culminated in the notorious Altamont Speedway Free Festival.

SYNOPSIS Fair Hope, one of the nation’s oldest and last remaining African-American benevolent
societies, has provided succor and assistance to tens of thousands of its Alabama members
since Emancipation. Now, it faces new challenges from its youngest members. The Foot Wash,
the society’s annual reunion and celebration, has evolved from a deeply spiritual ceremony
into a puzzling contemporary dichotomy of age and youth, virtue and vice, devotion and
debauchery. Through gripping interviews with some of the last surviving society members,
historians and local residents, Contradictions provides a raw look at a divided community and a
fading tradition. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg.

THE END OF TIME
SYNOPSIS Recalling the work of Terrence Malick and Werner Herzog, Peter Mettler’s enthralling
new film creates a tour de force that challenges our conception of time and perhaps the very
fabric of our existence. With stunning cinematography and a knack for capturing astonishing
moments, The End of Time travels the planet — from the CERN particle accelerator outside
Geneva to the lava flows of Hawaii; from a disintegrating Detroit where Henry Ford built his first
factory to the tree where Buddha was enlightened. Mettler’s provocative film explores the links
between renewal and destruction, giving the viewer a transcendent cinematic experience.

THE EXQUISITE CORPSE PROJECT
SYNOPSIS Ben Popik brings his former comedy troupe a challenge: each of the five writers will
produce 15 pages of one movie, having read only the previous writer’s last five pages. They
agree with one stipulation: if they write the movie, he has to make it. The result is this
one-of-a-kind narra-doc crossover that is equal parts comedy, psychosexual thriller, children’s
television show, love story, heist flick, and supernatural adventure. A hilarious ride in a runaway
car cobbled together from junkyard parts as hijacked by

SYNOPSIS Old-growth forests, famous guitar makers, Native American loggers, and the most
radical environmental group in the world meet (and sometimes clash) in this modern twist on a
classic story: an urgent battle between the white man and Native Americans, where age-old
land disputes result in an upending of our simplistic view of indigenous peoples and the past.
The guitar makers are on a desperate mission: to save a rare 400 year-old Alaskan rain forest
before it’s too late. It contains all of the large lumber of birch and ash to make the world’s finest
acoustic guitars. But as oil companies and tribal leaders battle, what will happen for guitar
manufacturers? Featuring Steve Earle and Yo La Tengo, and other notables who speak out,
Musicwood is a poignant environmental thriller for those who have a heart for music.

A huge thank you!
to all of those who stepped up to help make this Festival possible.
Volunteers filled over 200 positions including Venue Managers,
Ticket Takers, Decorators, Party Greeters, Hospitality Staff and
countless others. AFF is grateful to all of you for your enthusiasm,
talent and commitment to helping us build an exciting new cultural
event in Annapolis. We thank the City of Annapolis and all of our
local businesses for their support. We could not have done this
without you.
