The University advances the best interests of its
students and the State of Alabama through
teaching, service, research and other creative
activities to empower students to make valuable
contributions in their professional, civic,
educational, and economic endeavors.
Through innovative communication and course
delivery, Athens State University provides a
supportive environment for each student,
demonstrating the importance of the diverse
and interdependent nature of our state and
society. Athens State University changes the
face of Alabama by changing the lives of its
students.

On behalf of the Faculty and Staff of Athens State
University, I am pleased to present you with my report
outlining the financial affairs of our great institution for
the year 2014. You will find in these pages all the
numerical data that paint a picture of a university that
strives to meet the fiduciary responsibilities of our state,
our generous alumni, and our local community. What
it would be impossible to show is all the hard work of
our faculty, staff, and students that allows us to be
good stewards. I am proud of our ability to remain
financially strong, but I am most proud of the internal
accomplishments and sacrifices that keep us that way.
The 2014 academic year brought the challenges and
successes that every year brings. Academically, we
have seen great advancements in areas of industry
that have been identified as prospective careergrowth leaders. Culturally, we have enriched the
Athens State community through our commitment to
the arts and humanities. It was a great year, and it has
paved the way for many initiatives. We proved ourselves to multiple accreditation teams and garnered
significant recognition both locally and nationally.
As we near the completion of a successful three year
capital campaign, I am pleased to announce that we
have surpassed our $2.5 million goal. In fact, we are
in close range of the auxiliary stretch goal of $4 million
for the campaign end on May 31, 2015. The theme of
the campaign is “Ttaking us from where we are to
where we want to be,” and through the generosity of
our alumni and friends, the path we have set to our
goals now has many fewer obstacles.
I thank you for your continued support. With each year
the mission of Athens State gets more defined, but at
the same time we remain a model of flexibility to be
able to incorporate programming and initiatives toward
an ever-changing market. I am glad you are on our
team and that we are on this journey together.

In 1982, a small group of college and community leaders
formed an organization to provide a base for financial
and public support for Athens State University. The Athens
State University Foundation was created as a privately
controlled, independent organization of philanthropic aid
to the institution. The Foundation is recognized as a
non-profit organization under the Internal Revenue
Service's 501(c)3 guidelines.
While state appropriations provide a base for university
operations, the foundation has a common goal of insuring that Athens State University continues as a top regional educational institution. The Foundation is the proper
channel for private gifts from individuals, corporations
and foundations to the University. These gifts can be annual contributions or a planned gift whereby a donor provides for the University in their will or designates funds to
be used in a way they determine will be the best in their
long-term interest.

The generous support of alumni and friends through the establishment
of Endowed and Annual Scholarships makes an Athens State University
education possible for many students each year. Endowed Scholarships
are permanent funds that may be established through an investment
of $15,000, which may be contributed over a period of five years. Only
a percent, usually 5% or less of the endowment depending on the
earnings is awarded each year. For Annual Scholarships, the entire
gift amount is awarded each year.
