A lot of great info to enjoy from the ADM Alumni Reunion festivities! Remember, if you have anything to contribute, we would LOVE to hear it!! Send us your class reunion pictures (with everyone identified please) or anything else you have of memorabilia or current class activities/plans! Kris Peterson Manning, Class of ‘69 Email: [email protected] (NEW) By: Dave Sande Class of ‘75 Those of us who had Mrs. Reaman for American history probably would not remember one particular piece of trivia used in a quiz: The name of President Zachary Taylor’s horse. We learned the answer, got the point on the quiz and assumed that would be the last we would ever think about it. A couple of years later as a freshman at I.S.U, my dorm participated in a trivia contest broad cast over student radio. In between questions, a friend was asking us questions from a trivia book. He suddenly said, here’s one you guys will never ever get: What was the name of Zachary Taylor’s horse? I thought wait a minute, I know that one. The answer is Old Whitey. The stunned reply was “How in the H*** did you know that. It been burned in my memory ever since. 3 CARS – Not the Movie – the Memories A few memories were jogged and some e-mail correspondence pursued regarding “who drove what”. Enjoy and let us know what YOU remember!!! From: Dennis Leininger Class of ‘70 To: Jim Peters Class of ‘71 “I was at the Good Guys Car Show at the Iowa State Fairgrounds this past Friday. It was my 14th consecutive show and undoubtedly my favorite day of the year. It occurs to me that it isn’t just the hot rods and customs that I like but I have a special attraction to classic cars - -- the cars we all grew up with. I’m sure this comes from growing up in the 50’s & 60’s and riding in many of those cars and seeing them around town. I don’t care if it is a 1956 Packard like we had, an International pick-up like Harold’s [Reed] folks had or the New Yorker or Continental of the Oneals’ [Alan,Dave,Jim] – I have great memories of them and love seeing them again. My first car was a 64 Chevy my folks surprised me with for Christmas our senior year. Man – THAT was a great Christmas gift! My next car was a 70 Nova. I remember Jim Oneal’s first car because we were roommates at Iowa State at the time he bought his Ford from “Sugar Ray”. I’m thinking it was green and white which Jim later painted all brown -- - looked great! Then he had a blue Malibu I believe. I remember Mike Parkins driving a maroon 63 Chevy, Jim Houston driving a Maroon 64 Impala SS, Jim Cade bought Harold Beaman’s white 61 Chevy and Harold bought a beautiful 65 or 66 Chevy Caprice. The Peters’ had the coolest blue metal-flake Dune Buggy you have ever seen. Lewie Robbins had access to a “family” of VW Beetles none of which seemed to have heaters or defrosters that mattered much. Ron Stump had a blue Torino after a yellow Fairlane. But there were some real stand outs in town. Francis Coffin and his infamous green Road Runner! 440 six pack - - no carpet and radio delete. Francis was in to horsepower – not tunes. Mike Hackbart had his blue Mach l after graduation. Dan Case bought a white with blue accents 61 bubble-top Impala. He would stop at the Superior 400 once a week for gas and to buy a gallon container of 30wt oil that he poured in daily. Mosquitoes would scatter when Dan started up his 61. Randy Tarleton had a 68 bright green Camaro with a 327 and Marty Parkins had a maroon 67 Camaro. They both worked at the Phillips 66 station so that became a pretty cool looking parking lot. Dave Moyer had a bright yellow Nova for a year but upon graduation got a Brown SS Malibu with black hood stripes and chrome hood latches. Brad Wiley would cruise back into town in his Olds 442. Cool. Roger Stacey bought a bright red 66 Charger with a 383 in it that he, Dan Case and I drove out to Wyoming and Colorado (Harold’s country!) after graduation in search of Nature, girls and Coors beer. (we found nature and the Coors) Perry Wilcox cruised town in a white Corvette and Pat Quinn a maroon (popular color in the 60’s for cars!) hopped up Chevy 66 Nova. It wasn’t exactly American Graffiti but there were always cars scooping the loop or parked down at the swimming pool or games in the park or at Pearson’s Parkview Drive-in. Most of us drove our folks cars - - big land yachts, pick-ups, station wagons or cars with very “uncool” names like DeSotos, Buicks or Studebakers. But that didn’t matter - - we had wheels!” 4 Reply from Jim Peters: “I am just now reading your email . . . thank you for sharing it!!! It brought back a lot of memories. I seem to recall Nick Dawes driving a late 40’s / early 50’s Chevrolet 4door – off yellow with a black top . . . it might have even had the front window sun shade extending from where the roof meets the front window. I believe he referred to it as the “bumble bee”.” Dennis replied: “I may need to verify my memory a little. Now that I think about it I’m not sure of the year of Mike Parkin’s car and I think Cloudy’s was actually a 63. I’m not totally sure Pat Quinn’s was a Nova although that is how I remember it but it could have been a Malibu. I seem to remember that Kelly Meyers had a maroon Malibu too. I also think Francis’ Roadrunner had a 383 4brrl and not a 440 six pack but I really can’t remember. I do remember Kelly Hupp had a blue Ford – pretty nice one too and I’m thinking maybe a 61- 64. Bucket seats, center console with an automatic. “ Then shared with a classmate, Mike Parkins Class of ’69 and his response: “Dennis, was a little off. I had a blue 64 Impala SS. [Dave] Moyer [Class of ‘69] had a Yellow 69 Chevelle SS first not a Nova. If you put Stumpy's [Ron Stump Class of ‘69] cars in the article . . . make sure you get them all correct or he will never let you forget it!!!! He did have the blue 69 Torino. “ From Kris Peterson Manning: “and I drove a 63 Ford Falcon with bucket seats and a console with automatic . . . BUT I was jealous of Joanie Hufferd Olson Class of ’69, who drove a ’57 Chevy. YES – GIRLS had cars too and WE WERE COOL!! 2011 ADM Alumni Association Golf Tournament RIVER VALLEY GOLF COURSE FRIDAY, AUGUST 12 RECAP REPORT The wall cloud hovered over the course . . .
