Voices Newsletter PASTOR SUTTON’S CORNER By Superintendent Clethen U. Sutton “A Church Where You Can Feel the Holy Spirit” Superintendent Clethen U. Sutton, Pastor, Miracle Temple C.O.G.I.C. & Administrative Assistant to the Jurisdictional Bishop During the month of October, many may think of the word “Halloween”. According to some academic scholars, Halloween was also referred to as All halloween, All Hallow’s Eve and All Saints’ Eve. The day, October 31st, is a yearly celebration that is observed in many places throughout the world. Halloween is the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. All Hallows’ Day is on the 1st November by the Catholic Church and several Protestant denominations, and on the first Sunday after Pentecost in Eastern Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, in honor of all the saints, known and unknown. Historically this was a time that was dedicated to remembering the dead saints and faithful departed believers. In thinking about what Halloween was originally intended to be and what I see today, I think of the words “knocking” and “prayer”. On Halloween, there are people, young and old, who dress up in costumes and knock on my door with an expectation of receiving what they want just because they knocked. I am always praying, but during this season, especially if you are out and about on the evening of Halloween it can be dangerous. I ask that you be careful and stay prayerful. One privilege that we can take advantage of at any time is the privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. Just as the trick or treaters’ knock on the evening of Halloween and the door is opened; we can knock on God’s door and know that He will open it for us. “And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” Luke 11:9 SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT In Revelation, Jesus addressed the complacent church at Laodicea, saying, “I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me” (3:20). Sometimes, His knocking is a light tapping in our spirit. But other times, when we are inattentive, He may use a pounding fist of adversity to turn our focus to Him. When we knock at God’s door, He hears us and lets us in. So let us be attentive so that when God knocks at our door, we hear Him and let Him in. Reminder: October is Pastor Appreciation Month. This is a special time that individuals and congregations set aside each year to honor their pastors and pastoral families for labor in the vineyard. It is also important to remember that appreciation, affirmation and prayer support for our Pastors and other spiritual leaders is appropriate throughout the entire year. The scripture reads in 1 Timothy 5:17, "Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine." Suggested Scripture Reading: Luke 11 & 1 Timothy 5:17 Clethen U. Sutton, Pastor Superintendent of the West Central District Page 3 MISSIONARY LICENSING CEREMONY AT BROWN MEMORIAL C.O.G.I.C. SUGGESTED SCRIPTURE READING Habakkuk 1:1-5 Job 47:7-13 Ruth 1:12-21 Job 14:14-22 Job 1:13-21 Jeremiah 15:10-18 Psalm 56:1-7 Job 24:1, 9-12, 19-25 Psalm 56:8-13 Ezekiel 43:1-12 Habakkuk 2:1-5, 3:17-19 Psalm 5 Job 19:13-21 Psalm 11 Psalm 10:1-11 Psalm 24 Isaiah 44:1-8 Exodus 3:1-6 Psalm 57:1-6 Joshua 22:21-34 2 Samuel 24:17-25 Judges 6:24-32 There are two kinds of people in the world: those who trust in themselves and those who trust in God. When life comes crashing down, those who trust in themselves have no reason to rejoice. They cannot sustain joy in times of disappointment. Belief, hope, and trust in God are prerequisites for enduring the daily challenges of life. When disappointment and suffering appear, our trust in God is the primary factor that can sustain our joy. In this world, full of crime, economic crisis, and terrorism, we can rejoice in knowing God, who is sovereign over all.
