2. There is every cause for satisfaction as regards the
prospects of the Institution, which seems to have fully
entered. upon a career of usefulp.ess and prosperity' such as
its warmest well-wishers could desire.
3. The revenue sho"vs a still further increase over that
reported for 1875-the receipts for 1876 amounting to
£2846 13s. 4d. The bank overdraft shown in last Balancesheet has been liquidated, and, notwithstanding the unlool{ed
for extra expenditure referred to in Clause 17 of this Report,
the funds in hand ctlllount t.o £375 198. 2d., more than sufficient to meet all outstanding current liabilities.
4. The number of Inelnber8 on the roll on 31st December,
1876, was 1601, COlllposecl of 1460 yearly and half-yearly
subscribers, 28 quarterly subscribers, 99 life members, and 14
honorary· members. The subscriptions for the year alnount
to £1492 3s., as against £1241 5s. in 1875, or <tIl increase of
no less than £250 18s. N e,v Inembers to the number of 567.
joined during 1876.
.5. The revision of. the Library has received considerable
attention. A nUlnber of mutilated and surplus books have
been withdrawn, and their places filled by fresh copies of
standard works. A contract has been eliterecl into for· a
.
5
4
direct supply of the latest current literature by each mail
steamer, the first shipment being shortly expected.
6. The amount expended on the Library and Reading
Room, inclusive of outstanding liabilities in those departments, is £816 lOs. 2d. The volumes added number 980;
and several extra copies of leading magazines and newspapers have been subscribed for. There are 110"\V upwards
of 200 newspapers and 150 magazines supplied regularly.
7. A new
Ca~alogue of the Library has been prepared
and is now ready. It is arranged upon the principle of
classification followed in the Public Library, and founded
upon that of the British Muselull. This alteration, it is
believed, will prove very acceptable to reading members, as
it affords them increased facilities for speedy reference to
the works of well-known authors. Special attention is
directed to the new Juvenile Department, containing works
suited to the tastes of junior subscribers.
8. The attendance both in the Reading Room and Library
has been very large. The bound volumes issued during the
year amount to 43,115, and of magazines no less than
10,500 monthly parts were taken out.
9. The ventilation of the Reading Roorn has been improved
upon what is known as the Tobin systeIn, and the alteration
appears to have given satisfaction.
10. The classes have been moderately well attended.
They comprise the following-French, German, Italian,
Phonography, Singing, the subjects for the Civil Service and
Matriculation Examinations, &c.
,11. The large Hall has fully maintained its popularity,
and has been in constant demand. It returned a revenue of
£759 12s. ld. for 1876. The sInall Lecture Hall has also been
frequently occupied, and has yielded £199 4s. The 'rooms
let for classes, meetings, &c., show a rental of £59 5s. 6d.
12. Seeing that the funds in hand exceed all outstanding
current liabilities, and that the revenue continues jn a most
satisfactory condition, the Committee beg to point out to the
nlembers that the time has fairly 'arrived when the decoration of the large Hall and approaches should be proceeded
with. During the past three years the Hall has returned an
income considerably in e,xcess of working expenses and
interest on cost of erection, and it has becolue imperative
, that such decoration should be at once proceeded with.
13. The four offices· in front have been let regularly.
The revenue from this source amounts to £247 5s.
14. At a Special General Meeting of members, held 24th
August, 1876, revised Rules of the Institution were submitted, and the majority were confirmed. The principal
change effected was the alteration in the rate of subscription to 21s. annually and 12s. 6d. half-yearly. A quarterly
subscription of 7s. 6d. was also authorised. The beneficial
effect of this slight advance in the terms of subscription
has already been felt in a greatly increased proportion of
annual as compared with half-yearly subscriptions; while
the extra shillings and half-crowns which fall so lightly on
individuals make in the aggregate a useful addition to the
general revenue of the Institution. The quarterly subscriptions are, as yet, very few.
15. During the year the question of improved aCCOlumodation was tak:en into consideration, and a Special General
Meeting of members was held on 13th September, 1876,
when a proposition was submitted asking for authority to
borrow on mortgage the additional SUIU of £6000, to be
expended in re-building the front of the Institution. The
meeting decided that it would be unadvisable to contract
the proposed] oan until after the appointluent of officers at
the next Annual Meeting. In Inentioning this the 00n1n1ittee tak:e the opportunity of recording their opinion that
improved accomlnodation for the melubers generally is a
subject requiring iIDlnediate attention. With a constantly
increasing roll of subscribers the necessity for increased
accommodation becolnes daily luore apparent, and it is to
be hoped that during the ensuing year some means of meet~ng this want will be dev~sed and c~rried into operation~
,.

.16. After the meeting at which the Rules of the Institution
were revised, the OOlnlnittee were requested to open the
Reading Roonl on Sundays. The OOIlllnittee ordered a
baUot to ascertain the wishes of the Subscribers on the
subject. The ballot was held for seven days, fronl 12th to
19th Septelnber, 1876, illclusive. The result "vas as follows:
-In favour of lreeping the Reading Rooln cloRed, 534; ill
favour of opening it, 492. Majority in favour of keeping
closed, 42.
19. The following Table shows the proportions in which the
various classes of ,yorks have been issued during the last five
years :--
17. In Septeluber last, the western wall of the Athellffiunl
building "vas reported by Messrs. Smith and Johnson,
architects to the Institution, to be in jeopardy, owing to
the excavations in connexion with the Victoria Olub. The
Committee at once obtained an injunction restraining the
contractor froln further endangering the buildings; and subsequently, after due deliberation, a conlprolnise was effected
with the lessees of the Club, each side paying their OWll law
expenses, and one-half the cost of the l1ecessttry ,Yorks.
