Completion and opening of the stunning $175 million, seven-story Patient Care Tower at Franklin Square keeps a very solemn promise to the community. With the help of visionary support, we have successfully envisioned, supported and delivered this magnificent new medical facility. From the ground up, the health needs of a growing 21st century community have been built in. As the profiles in this special edition of as promised reveal, the Franklin Square community is notable for intense devotion and great generosity. From the longstanding volunteerism and leadership of Bob Romadka and his family to the perceptiveness of donors Scott and Yvonne Barhight, the greatest gifts these modern philanthropists bring us is their engagement and dedication. Their appreciation is well earned. In this issue, read about five key Franklin Square associates who, in various ways, led the way to completion of the Patient Care Tower. Our mission of delivering excellent community-based healthcare today stands on a firmer foundation because of their contributions to this crucial project. To all of you who have supported us in this dynamic campaign to “Keep the Promise,” to bring healthcare facilities and services in Eastern Baltimore County fully into the 21st century, our deepest thanks. For those who will benefit from these enhancements, welcome to Franklin Square’s new Patient Care Tower! Sincerely, Janet Rafky Vice President, Development and Community Relations Franklin Square Hospital Center Foundation F E A T U R E Towering achievement Over the past six years, they have contributed their talents behind the scenes to a once-in–a-lifetime cause. Now, meet five men and women who have helped to make the new Patient Care Tower at Franklin Square a complete success. It’s nearly here. After six years of petitions and paperwork, blueprints and planning, the gleaming new $175 million Franklin Square Patient Care Tower is set to open its doors in just a few short weeks. All agree that the 356,000 square-foot facility is extraordinary in every regard, with spacious, allprivate patient rooms, an expanded and modern emergency department, a larger pediatric center (to be called the Todd Heap Family Pediatric Center) and other state-of-the-art features designed to optimize quality care delivery and ensure a positive patient experience. Still, there’s more than meets the eye in the creation of the Patient Care Tower. Over the past six years, a remarkable process of collaboration has unfolded, one that has literally engaged the entire Franklin Square community in the design of the new building. “Our development process for the Patient Care Tower was a very open and collaborative approach involving the Board, administration, physicians, and nursing leadership, all with one shared goal—to serve the patient with the best quality care available,” says Hospital Board Chair Debra Doyle. “This attitude is the cornerstone of why Franklin Square has been so successful.” The best buildings are always made of more than bricks and mortar. They also represent the best thinking and passionate ideals of people who have contributed to their successful construction. Let’s meet five of those individuals, who while representing countless others, have each played a unique role in making the new Patient Care Tower a true groundbreaking event. 3 4 as F E A T U R E The Administrator: It really is a healing environment.” As Franklin Square’s Vice President for Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer, Larry Strassner is justifiably proud. “We have one of the best nurse-to-patient ratios of any hospital in the state,” he says. “The executive team has invested significantly in nursing and quality care. They realize that the RN at the bedside is key to us achieving the quality and service our patients deserve.” But he is equally proud of how the design of the new Patient Care Tower’s units reflect the best practices in primary care, including many suggested by Franklin Square’s own nurses. As a member of the Hospital’s Executive Steering Committee, Strassner was “involved pretty much from conception” in the development of the Tower’s design. Through many rounds of feedback from the nursing staff, a highly efficient and patientcentric model for the Tower’s clinical units was developed. “Everything is designed to bring care more effectively to the patient,” he notes. To start, the new U-shaped patient units in the ICU will all share an identical floor plan and facilities layout, so that nurses transferred from one department to another can get up to speed quickly without re-orientation. In addition, the units are designed to direct nurses away from the nursing station and toward the patient’s bedside. Between every two patient rooms is an alcove that contains a satellite workstation that is networked with the unit’s central nursing station. There, the nurse can work productively on a laptop while remaining physically closer to his or her patients. Even the patient rooms feature practical design elements. A family-centered area with a pullout sleeper sofa is located by the room window, separated from the attending nurse’s workspace. “Our belief is that families help patients heal, so we want to incorporate them into a patient’s care,” says Strassner. “This room design will allow our nurses to work effectively in a way that’s not disruptive to the family.” as Dr. Scott Krugman isn’t kidding around. As Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Franklin Square, he’s been focused for the last 12 years on developing the Hospital’s emergency pediatric services into a nationally recognized unit for its quality of care. Now with the advent of the new Patient Care Tower, he sees the unit’s standard of care gaining even more ground. “Overall, our expectations have been more than met with our new unit in the Patient Care Tower,” he says. “We’ll be able to continue to deliver the same high quality care, just in a better place.” Dr. Krugman says that early involvement in the planning stages of his unit was key. “We were involved in everything — from space design to the number of rooms,” he says. “The architects were very inclusive and made us all feel like we were part of the process.” As a result, the current model of the F E A T U R E integrated Pediatric Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit will be maintained in the new Patient Care Tower. Co-located with the Adult ED, the Pediatric ED will feature a separate waiting area and triage, and flex care rooms close by to treat minor injuries and illnesses. More serious cases will be treated in the Pediatric ED and Inpatient area. Dr. Krugman also points to the Pediatrics inpatient unit as “more patientfriendly and quieter,” with colorful, larger rooms and allotted spaces for visiting family members. In addition, both ED and Inpatient rooms are being wired for electronic records access, so physicians can have bedside documentation for all care. “Our vision always has been to create the best and most complete pediatric unit in the area,” says Dr. Krugman. “We’re very excited about our new space.” The Physician: We’ll be able to handle anything.” 5 6 as F E A T U R E The Chaplain: Our mission is providing spiritual care to all people.” When she first heard about the new Patient Care Tower project six years ago, Reverend Cherie Smith felt instantly inspired. As the Chaplain of Franklin Square Hospital Center, she had long wished for a larger, more welcoming space for the Hospital’s Chapel that was more central to foot traffic. Wasting no time, she made her case. “I framed it for senior management that what we would be adding to the new building would not be a church, but a symbol of Franklin Square’s commitment to see every patient, family member, and staff member as a complete human being,” she recalls. Rev. Smith got her wish; a new and dramatically designed Chapel in the new Patient Care Tower. Painted in restful greens and browns, the new Chapel will offer more than three times the space of the original, with seating for 20 or more. Chairs were chosen instead of pews in order to provide the greatest amount of flexibility in using the interfaith space. Located just off the Main Lobby of the new Patient Care Tower, “The new Chapel will make our dimension of spiritual care much more visible to our patients and their families as they come and go,” says Rev. Smith. The most dramatic feature of the new Chapel is an all-glass wall that frames the outdoor Meditation Garden. The supported Garden, was developed through a contribution from a single donor, it contains comfortable seating, a winding walkway, and fountain. “It is beautiful from a meditative and prayerful perspective,” Rev. Smith notes, “but it is also a healing tool for patients who want to get a breath of fresh air in a private space.” An interfaith service was held on Sunday, October 24 to dedicate the new Chapel and Meditation Garden at Franklin Square. as Debra Doyle is one busy healthcare executive. As the Executive Vice President of Health and Operations for Erickson Retirement Communities, she is responsible for 23,000 residents, 12,000 employees, and operations in 12 states. But she makes time to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors at Franklin Square. “It’s my passion to make sure that Franklin Square remains the first choice of our patients,” she says. In October, Doyle became the Board’s new Chair. It’s the culmination of a six-year experience as a board member, time which was largely spent on planning for and then developing the new Patient Care Tower. “One of the most pivotal pieces of work the Board has accomplished during this development process was the required coordination with community relations, government relations, regulatory agencies, and the MedStar System itself,” she notes. “Happily, we’ve been able ” The Board Chair: We have planned well for the future.” F E A T U R E to deliver on our promises to all of the stakeholders involved in this project, both internally and externally, at every step of the way.” Doyle is particularly proud of the Board’s accomplishments in managing transition discussions with the operational teams over the past 18 months, making sure their units could move safely into the new building without losing a beat on service and quality. “We as a Board pushed back very hard in saying that we’ll wait until we are ready to be able to move everybody into the new building together.” Doyle is very focused on the Hospital’s ongoing mission. “My main focus is to make sure that we continually strive to improve the quality of care and the quality of services at the Hospital,” she says. 7 8 as F E A T U R E The Facilities Director: It’s been a great adventure.” It’s his job. Over the past five years since the Patient Care Tower first broke ground, Dennis Kephart has been the point person at Franklin Square in overseeing that project’s development. As Director of Facilities and the Tower Project, Kephart has managed a broad array of responsibilities, from the initial Request for Information and Request for Proposal selection and the coordination of vendors to providing owner representation throughout the design and construction processes. Kephart admits that the most difficult phase of the project was designing to budget, given some of the challenges presented by the site. The Patient Care Tower was given a relatively small footprint, and so required additional height to the design. Fortunately the Hospital was given an easement on their height restriction covenant, which allowed the extra levels to be added. As representative for the owner, Kephart also was responsible for coordinating review and feedback on the building’s design and infrastructure between the Hospital’s Associate user groups and the building’s architect and designer. “That responsibility included bringing together the Hospital’s user groups with the design team to ensure that what was being designed worked for these groups and also remained within budget. That was not a small task,” he smiles. However, Kephart has nothing but praise for the overall process. “The Patient Care Tower you see today is the work of so many—senior management and Board members, MedStar, department leadership, and user groups that included line staff,” he notes. “This is not the work of a few, but of many people engaged in creating the best possible patient and family experience.” Taking the LEED in Green Given Franklin Square’s ongoing commitment to sustainability through its “Be Square, Be Green” program, it’s no surprise that Patient Care Tower green benefits. include: • Use of a white roofing material to reflect sunlight and naturally cool the building. • Flooring, wall coverings, adhesives and paints selected to minimize emissions of volatile organic compounds and ensure health of building occupants. the new Patient Care Tower and Emergency • All entrances to the building pressurized and walk-off mats provided to minimize entry of pollutants. D O N O R P R O F I L E Scott & Yvonne Barhight Franklin Square has always been part of G. Scott Barhight Esq.’s life. His family has lived in Middle River since World War II and he has served on the Hospital Board of Directors and Foundation Board of Directors for ten years, and has served as Chair on both boards. “Franklin Square is my community hospital,” Scott says. “My parents, wife and I have all received care there recently. Franklin Square is a key institution in the community. Not only does the Hospital provide outstanding healthcare, it’s also the largest employer in southeast Baltimore and serves the community through a variety of outreach programs.” Scott and his wife Yvonne, principal at a Baltimore County public school, have both done much over the years to help the Hospital thrive. In addition to Scott’s service on the board and Yvonne’s participation with the Hospital Auxiliary, the Barhights are generous donors. They recently made a donation to the new Patient Care Tower. The Patient Care Tower transforms community Meditation Garden will bear the family name in honor of Scott’s grandmother who was a volunteer and early supporter of bringing Franklin Square to its current home. Scott and Yvonne are excited about the opening of the Tower and what it will mean to the community. “Not only will the building be a state-of-the-art medical facility, it will also stand as a statement of who Franklin Square is and how the community should see itself,” Scott believes. “The building of the Tower is a transformational event for this community.” Adds Yvonne, “Franklin Square is like family to me. Last year, a hospital outreach project provided backpacks and school supplies for the children at my school which helped so many families. Scott and I are happy to support Franklin Square for what the Hospital has done for our family and what they provide for the community.” The building of the tower is a transformational event for this community.” G. Scott Barhight Esq. 9 10 as C O R P O R A T E D O N O R P R O F I L E Rosedale Federal Bank Shared history. Shared commitment. At first glance, a bank and a hospital may not seem to have much in common. It’s when you look past the business these institutions are in to the people they serve that you’ll find the connection. Rosedale Federal Savings & Loan has been based in the community that surrounds Franklin Square since 1908. Not only has Rosedale Federal been an important part of the community for more than 100 years because it meets its neighbors’ banking needs, Rosedale is also very active in supporting a range of community organizations. That support includes a recent $100,000 pledge to Franklin Square’s Patient Care Tower campaign. Rosedale Federal President and CEO Thomas Wintz, a member of the Hospital’s Board of Directors, recognized the commitment that Franklin Square was making with the addition of the Patient Care Tower and felt that it was important that his institution support that commitment. “Franklin Square and Rosedale Federal have a shared history of service to this community,” says Tom. “We have a longstanding shared mission of providing safe, high quality, excellent service and education to improve the overall health of the people we serve.” He feels that the tower will be a physical symbol of Franklin Square’s commitment to the people of this community and it’s important that the leaders in the community support it. “The majority of our branches surround the Franklin Square campus. Many Rosedale Federal customers and employees are served by the hospital,” he adds. “Sustaining and enhancing this kind of state-of-the-art medical facility is important to the entire community. For all of us at Rosedale Federal, it is crucial that we ensure the overall well-being of our community—both financial health and medical health are fundamental for a community to thrive and grow.” ” Franklin Square and Rosedale Federal have a shared history of service. Financial and medical health are fundamental for a community to thrive and grow.” Thomas Wintz, Rosedale Federal President and CEO Special Edition 2010 A S S O C I A T E P R O F I L E Why I Give: Carroll Reid A facility for giving Carroll W. Reid, Jr., Franklin Square night stationary engineer “Everyone should give back to the place where they work.” That’s the firm belief of Carroll W. Reid, Jr., Night Stationary Engineer at Franklin Square Hospital Center. Carroll has worked at Franklin Square for 23 years and has always been an active supporter of the Hospital, raising money for the NICU in the early ’90s, making a large donation with his wife to help build the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Institute, and serving as a member of the capital campaign committee to help raise the funds needed for several new facilities. Most recently he and his wife made a very generous $5,000 donation to the Patient Care Tower campaign, a project he believes will have a tremendous positive impact on the entire Franklin Square community. “The new Tower will be state of the art,” he explains. “It will help physicians provide the best care possible and speed up wait times in our very busy Emergency Department. The new facilities will also make the experience of receiving care more comfortable for patients because everyone will have a private room.” For Carroll, Franklin Square is more than the place where he works. He, his wife and two children live in the community just three miles away from the Hospital and receive their medical care from Franklin Square physicians. His oldest son, Carroll Reid III, also works at Franklin Square. Carroll has noticed that more Associates contribute to the fundraising campaigns at Franklin Square than at other workplaces. “I believe that everyone who works at Franklin Square should give back,” he notes. “Not only is this your employer, many of us also use the services that the Hospital provides.” He adds, “When you give to Franklin Square, you know exactly where the money is going and how it will be used. Your donation helps the Hospital to get the facilities and equipment needed to help meet our patients’ needs. It also helps Franklin Square continue critical community outreach and education. The new Patient Care Tower is just one more way Franklin Square is taking care of the community, providing great services right here so people don’t have to go far to find the care and services they need.” The new Patient Care Tower is one more way Franklin Square is taking care of the community.” 11 What the Tower means to me The Tower will provide us with the necessary space to provide excellent emergency, pediatric, intensive care for our patients. Without a doubt, the Tower represents a significant piece of the puzzle needed for high quality healthcare in Eastern Baltimore County.” Michael Pipkin, M.D. An environment that is elegant, lit by sunshine, quiet, clean and professional enhances the dignity of patients and the quality of care provided by hospital staff.” Emily Richie, M.D. To me the Tower means that patients will enjoy a new level of privacy in their room not only when they are alone trying to rest and recover but also when they interact with their physicians, the hospital staff and their visiting friends and family.” . Gabriel Soudry, M.D Special Edition 2010 The Tower means to me a wonderful new facility filled with modern equipment and special people dedicated to improving the health of the communities we serve.” Donovan Dietrick, M.D. The new Patient Care Tower will be great. In 1961, when Franklin Square decided to move from Baltimore City, Bob and his wife Eleanor were instrumental in bringing the hospital to its current location. Nearly 50 years later, Bob, Eleanor and their children continue to be ardent supporters of Franklin Square. Not only did the family make a generous donation to the Patient Care Tower project, Bob is also Chair of the campaign to raise $10 million to support this major expansion. Bob has served on the Hospital’s Operating Board in several positions; Eleanor has been a member of the Auxiliary and an active fundraiser. “Franklin Square is an anchor in our community,” explains Eleanor. “We believe it is important to give back to the community and that’s something we taught our four children.” The Romadka’s daughters, Leslie Kaminski and Jean Romadka, learned well. Jean served on the Hospital Operating The Tower will be an outstanding resource for the community. My family is proud to help Franklin Square keep this promise.” Bob Romadka, Campaign Chairman Board for a decade and is now on the Auxiliary Board. Leslie joined the Foundation Board two years ago. She and her husband Bob hosted a successful campaign event at their home that featured fellow Franklin Square supporter Baltimore Raven Todd Heap. Even their daughter, Rene’, got involved with the Hospital, working as a junior volunteer. Says Jean, “I remember helping our parents raise money to build the Hospital. After high school, I worked in Medical Records when the hospital was one building with two floors. How things have changed! I have always enjoyed being part of the growth of the hospital and am proud to follow in my parents’ footsteps.” Adds Leslie, “My dad had great foresight being part of the effort to bring Franklin Square to the area, and now that vision has come full circle with his role as Tower campaign chair.” Notes Bob Romadka, “The Tower will be an outstanding resource for the community and my family is proud to help Franklin Square keep this promise.” Special Edition 2010 Foundation news A promise worth celebrating It’s not often you find a hospital lobby filled with guests dancing the night away, but the Celebrate the Promise Donor Event was no ordinary celebration. Hosted by the Franklin Square Hospital Center Foundation, the event brought together over 200 guests for an evening of music, gourmet cuisine, dancing and guided tours of key areas in the new Patient Care Tower. Arriving guests were greeted by the sounds of a brass quintet at the building’s entrance. Once inside, donors, members of the Hospital’s Operating and Foundation Boards, legislators and members of the tower contracting team enjoyed a raw bar, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails as well as dancing to live music. Franklin Square Hospital Center President Dr. Adrienne Kirby, MedStar Health Executive Vice President of Operations for the Baltimore Region Carl Schindelar and Hospital and Foundation Board Member Scott Barhight shared her excitement about the opening of the Patient Care Tower and expressed their gratitude for the hard work and support of everyone who helped make the tower a reality.
