Officieel clubblad van de B.S.A. Owners Club Belgium.
Het bestuur, noch de typeconsulenten, noch de inzenders
kunnen aansprakelijk gesteld worden voor schade die het
gevolg is van raadgevingen verschenen in The Best en
daarbuiten.
Advertenties zijn gratis, zowel voor leden als niet-leden maar
zij dienen wel verband te houden met Engelse motorfietsen.
Handelaars kunnen een reclameboodschap in ‘The Best’ laten
verschijnen met een maximum grootte van ¼ van een
bladzijde. Deze advertenties zijn gratis maar de handelaar
dient er zich toe te verbinden om op vertoon van een recent
boekje van The Best met geldig adreslabel korting te verlenen
aan de leden van de BSA-OC Belgium.
Daar het onze grootste zorg is om onze leden ten dienste te
zijn zien wij deze reclame eerder als nuttige informatie. Het
staat de redactie vrij om een reclameboodschap al dan niet te
aanvaarden. Bij eventueel gebrek aan plaats verschuift de
publicatie naar de volgende uitgave.
Wegens het ontbreken van Nederlandstalige inzendingen, deden
we een beroep op onze Waalse en Engelse motorvrienden.
Haal uw beste Frans en Engels maar boven 
Graag nieuwe NL-artikels voor het boekje jan-febr-2010.
Indien mogelijk zal elke uitgave digitaal beschikbaar (steeds 1

Elk jaar opnieuw - op 21 juli onze nationale feestdag –
ontmoeten motorrijders van vooroorlogse machines elkaar in
Arbre een onooglijk klein dorpje in de buurt van Profondeville.
Ook dit jaar waren we weer met heel wat Limburgers afgezakt
naar deze mooie streek aan de Maas om deel te nemen aan
de 7e Arbre à Cames. Dit jaar waren we met 36%
Nederlandssprekende deelnemers, toch niet slecht hé.
We laten nu organisator Philippe Lardinois aan het woord.
Cette 7ème édition avant même l’envoi des invitations
s’avérait être un bon cru. Philippe Polomé était inscrit dès le
mois d’avril ! Fin juin, nous étions déjà une bonne
quarantaine, et finalement le 21 juillet, c’est 62 motards qui
étaient présents au rendez-vous. Que de chemin parcouru et
que de chemins parcourus (+/- 700kms) depuis la première
en 2003 où seulement 15 « pionniers » avaient fait le
déplacement. Pour la petite histoire, de ces 15 pilotes, il en
reste trois qui ont fait toutes les éditions : Michel Bovy,
Maurice Courtois et votre serviteur « obligé »…
Marie-Rose l’organisatrice peut être fière de rassembler
autant de motos d’avant-guerre en ce jour de notre fête
nationale. Cette année 36% de néerlandophones avaient fait
le déplacement. La manifestation est maintenant bien rodée.
Un petit parcours de mise en jambe le matin, le dîner sur le
lieu même du départ et une promenade digestive l’après midi
avant la remise des souvenirs. Aux alentours de 100 kms sur
la journée sur des routes pittoresques bien de chez nous et
pas trop difficiles pour nos vieilles machines. Elles ont toutes
plus de septante ans tout de même et à cet âge, ça se
respecte. Pas question de bobonnes, mais des vieilles
demoiselles respectables et ma foi bien conservées…
Ce 21 juillet, nous sommes partis à notre aise sur les petites
routes parfois très bosselées vers Mettet, (rappelez-vous des
Bosseuses, le motocross de Pâques) pour aller voir de quoi
aurait l’air le nouveau circuit permanent.

train et à l’arrivée de
2010, il sera fini. Il
s’agit
d’un
circuit
destiné
aux
compétitions
mais
surtout à l’écolage tant
moto que voiture…Un
bien beau projet pour
Nieuwe circuit van Mettet
la région voire pour le
pays entier. Jusque là,
aucune panne majeure à signaler…Une chaîne cassée et
réparée sur place à Mettet…grâce au bon soin de Vincent
notre camion balai qui transporte avec lui un véritable atelier
y compris le super savon et les essuies mains pour garder les
mains propres après une séance de mécanique. Les
limbourgeois n’en revenaient pas d’un tel service inconnu
chez eux !
Par contre, Jacques Chandelon, dès le départ, déséquilibré en
démarrant de la salle communale a plié son repose-pied et
renonce la mort dans l’âme à faire le rallye…C’était sans
compter sur la grande solidarité des dames qui nous aident
pour le dîner…Si Jacques nous aide à préparer le dîner et à
rouler le jambon autour des asperges, il roulera l’après-midi
avec sa Monet Goyon !!!
C’est donc avec un plaisir non dissimulé que Jacques s’est mis
d’abord à rouler les serviettes autour des couverts pour
s’entraîner et ensuite les tranches de jambon autour des
asperges… ! A midi, quand tout le monde fût repu, un petit
passage chez Philippe en face nous a permis de ressouder le
pied pour réparer la moto, et Jacques Chandelon a pu
parcourir la vallée mosane sur sa (presque) fidèle monture…
Merci à Michel et Henri pour le démontage et surtout merci à
Francis pour sa dextérité à la soudure sur un poste qu’il ne
connaissait pas avec de vieilles baguettes !
L’après-midi allait nous conduire au petit port de plaisance de
Waulsort.

allait embarquer les motards marins d’un jour pour traverser
le fleuve et prendre une petite collation de l’autre côté où
Jean-Marie nous attendait à côté de son bateau le « Francalau
» authentique ancienne vedette hollandaise à deux moteurs et
sur laquelle votre dévoué a passé son brevet général de marin
d’eau douce ! Cet arrêt à l’ombre nous a permis de nous
familiariser avec les instruments de bord et les différents
règlements maritimes pour ceux que cela intéressaient. Mais
nous avons pu assister à une rencontre-discussion
extraordinaire…Lisez plutôt Michel Bovy vivement intéressé
par l’achat d’un bateau discutait avec Claude Lejeune… «
Tiens j’ai fait mon service à la Marine…ah moi aussi…et je suis
parti sur le Stavelot en Afrique centrale…Ah bin moi aussi
c’était en 1960 et quelques…bla bla bla…et blablabla…Mais
nom d’une pipe, nous étions du même voyage sur le même
bateau alors !... »Deux motards, un de Namur, l’autre de
Liège attirés par les vieilles bécanes se parlent 40 ans après
et se rendent compte qu’ils étaient sur le même bateau pour
la même mission …Dingue non ? Surtout un jour de la fête
nationale !

Geen Arbre à Cames zonder Limburgse sleutelstop!
Le retour au bercail s’est déroulé on ne peut mieux sauf peutêtre la traversée encombrée de Dinant un jour férié…Mais une
petite surchauffe de temps en temps n’a jamais fait de mal au
piston, sauf sur la mienne qui s’est permise de s’offrir un petit
serrage à 200m de l’arrivée !
La remise des souvenirs s’est faite cette année avec les
autorités provinciales et communales, nous avions en effet à
nos côtés, Monsieur Delire, député provincial, et Monsieur
Nicaise, Echevin de Profondeville qui ont remis les souvenirs
au choix de chacun. Cette année, une page complète dans «
Vers l’Avenir » nous a été réservée le lendemain de cette
7ème édition. Serait-ce devenu un must de venir à Arbre ?
L’accueil, les motos, le parcours, le petit prix d’inscription,
l’excellent dîner, un peu de visite culturelle, et la super
ambiance à la remise des souvenirs comme tout au long de la
journée d’ailleurs le laisse penser…
C’est encore en promettant de revenir l’année prochaine que
tout le monde s’en est retourné vers sa contrée lointaine…

What can I say except what a brilliant rally organised by the
Dutch South Limburg team.
Theresa and I did not get off to a good start, she had a rear
tyre puncture just 12 miles from home, this meant that we
boarded a ferry 2 hours later than planned.
Arriving on a fine day at the rally midday on Saturday we
found many persons already set up for the week ahead, up
with our tent then we book in and receive the rally pack
There was a good on-site restaurant and so saved us
shopping and cooking in the tent the first night, a lot of
people came up to the restaurant complaining that the live
band “The Blues Doctors” were too loud.
By the time we finished our meal and entered the marquee
they had turned the volume down but were still a little loud,
the bar “Falcon Bantams Nest” was selling drinks for 1 or 2
€uro, beer or wine, not very busy on the dance floor that
night but the band were very good.
Next day we had the official opening ceremony with the help
of a local military re-enactment club, they had rifles (not BSA)
stood in a group of 3 to emulate the piled arms position and
fired into the air, the loud gunfire shot startled a lot of people.
Later we were provided with a photo puzzle tour leaflet,
memorise the first picture and turn in the direction of the
arrow on the leaflet, there were BSA’s every where, all going
in different directions, we made a few mistakes but managed
to eventually complete the 45km route, a very popular theme
this as always.
In the marquee that evening we had a duo “Gordon and Erik”
Gordon Smith is a Brit living in Holland for many years, Erik is
the Son of rally organisers Chris and Ine Cruts, the duo had
played together some time in the past and were very good,
after they had finished and the bar had shut they came and
sat at our table and played acoustic for us, we had a great
sing song until we were thrown out of the marquee at 1.30 in
the morning.

Good job the leaving time for the line up was not until 11.30,
this was to be in front of the Town Hall in the centre of
Maastricht, we all left as one group with marshals to guide the
way. The Old Town Hall is a beautiful building, starting in
1644 it took 15 years to complete, has a double entrance to
allow the two city rulers to enter simultaneously.
On arrival we were each given a sheet of cardboard to act as
an anti-oil mat, good idea. We entered the building and
received a drink and a cake followed by a welcome speech.
Back outside it was a hot day, 171 bikes were counted, we
left ours to go and explore the city on foot, a really nice place,
well worth a visit, best to have a city map so that you do not
get lost in the maze of back-streets and squares. Some time
later we made our own way back to the campsite. In the
marquee we were treated to some singing celebrities
Tuesday morning, another hot day starting at 10.15 for a
short walk to the railway station, there we boarded a 1930’s
steam train, the journey was quite amusing as the guard had
to get off the train and open and close every crossing barrier
on our 1 hour journey.
Our destination was the Continium Discovery Centre museum
in Kerkrade, a discovery centre of science and industry, what
a great place to visit, a lot of interesting items there, some
were hands on to operate yourself, a snack meal was
provided with the majority of us sitting outside in the shade,
too hot to sit in the sun, another well worth a visit attraction.
In the marquee that night Eric played a selection of CD music,
the Lucas night run was also held, you will not catch me riding
at night unless I have to.
The following day was the 3 Countries Tour, taking in parts of
Holland, Germany and Belgium, each person was given a
detailed map for this, as the distance for this was 170km TT
and I decided to give it a miss and take a trip into Belgium.
Those that did go on the tour reported that it was excellent.
What a great laugh we had in the marquee that night, a
female impersonator “Madam Gisela” with two balloons in the
appropriate places, mixing in with the crowd, it went down a
storm.

Later we were treated to some rather rude GB rugby songs,
the International choir seems to have died out now, shame
that.
Thursday started off a little bit damp, a fine drizzle that did
not last for too long, the Silly Games were being held in the
morning, a few people doing lots of silly things, also apart
from Polly who had his stall set up all week, he was joined by
Jacob de Groot who had a large selection of spare parts on
display, later I attended the International committee meeting
in Valkenburg Town Hall, once again a very nice building, we
all had good reports to submit, I have up to date information
that I will report back to you later.
Dinner and Dance night was a splendid affair, a lot of people
had dressed up for the occasion, Chris Cruts was even
wearing his Chief Maastricht Carnival Organiser suit and chain
of office, Even the marquee had been upgraded, lots of very
nice pictures hanging up, I know this did seem an expensive
occasion but it was good value for money, some drinks were
included and the food was excellent, the presentation gifts
exchange came next, Polly did this for us and received a
plaque made from local limestone with the Dutch BSA Rally
logo carved out of the solid lump. Most of the presentations to
the Dutch Club all seemed to be drink related, very odd, Kees
Broeders made off with the GB presentation, saying I know
where this is going, he probably has the mounted BSA rifle
stock hanging in his home right now in Brummen. After this
we were treated to some great impersonation acts, Elvis was
fantastic, I do not think many people were aware that this
was in fact Erik once again, Mick Jagger was also very good, a
great impersonation, I spoke to him at the bar later, nice
chap, Tina Turner also made an appearance, it was a great
night finished off with the band “La Vita”
Friday the final day I did not seem to do anything much at all,
the Super Rocket clutch had started dragging so I adjusted
the springs on that, TT’s plunger A10 was getting harder for
her to start so I cleaned the magneto points, we took the tent
down while it was dry and stayed in an empty caravan, we
should have been packing but by the time we moved in it was

time for the BBQueue to start. There certainly was a queue all
right but you could sit down and get a drink while waiting, no
rush, there was ample food available, more than enough with
seconds and thirds available for the big eaters. The live band
“The Bantams” were on next, the were originally called the
Puch’s as they all owned this type of moped that were on
display in front of the stage, they changed their name just for
the occasion, they did some good sixties music.
During the interval the awards were given out, GB came 4th
in the silly games with the Dutch winning 1st place, our very
own John Hewitt at 80 years old was the oldest rider, Hilger
Jagau from Germany was the youngest rider, great to see he
is joining in with his Mother and Father’s enthusiasm, long
distance went to Switzerland, Jan Eskens, he is actually Dutch
but lives in CH.I had difficulty in hearing any others. After this
the raffle was drawn, there were some lovely prizes, TT and I
did not win but as some of these were large pictures we
would of had trouble getting them home, a lot of people were
extremely happy with what they won, the rest on display in
the marquee were sold off. After this the band played on, a
great finish to the rally.
Even the 470,tonne International Space Station was a nightly
visitor, clearly visible in the sky on the right hand side as you
left the marquee during one of its16 Earth Orbits a day, 200
miles high with the sun reflecting off the giant solar panels,
an eyrie sight at dusk and dawn.
Saturday we managed to ride to Dunkerque and catch the
16:00 ferry, we relaxed and had a small snack during the
crossing arriving home just before dark, looking forward to a
day of rest on the Sunday before returning to work on
Monday. I can only repeat that the Dutch put on a fantastic
rally, a standard very hard to live up to.
Congratulations must also go to Ray Trigwell of East London
who rode his BSA Javelin bicycle all the way from the Hook of
Holland, 170.5 miles in 3 days, well done.
We can now look forward to 2010, either New Zealand or the
Summercamp in GB or both.

en 20 € voor buitenlandse leden.
