ABOUT JOHOR CRAFTS Johor is also famous for its quality locallyproduced handicrafts and souvenirs. Johoreans, especially the rural folks, enjoy making craft, either as a hobby or for a living. Among the popular ones include ceramic crafts and wood carvings. Traditional musical instruments are also crafted in Johor such as the gambus, kompang and angklung. Even the art of making kuda kepang is still alive here! Some of these products require skills and perseverance to complete, and most craftsmen will tell you that their commitment and passion are the two things that help sustain this vanishing art. You can find a lot of these artisans scattered around the various provinces in Johor - the wood carvers in Muar and Batu Pahat, songket weavers in Kota Tinggi, and rattan weavers in Segamat. Ayer Hitam is another popular destination for Johor craft. Just over an hour’s drive from Johor Bahru, you can find numerous shops or stalls here producing and selling various types of ceramic wares. The Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation is doing its part to encourage participation in craft development programs by offering technical assistance and training in various areas. Founded in 1952 as a rehabilitation centre in a local hospital, Johor Area Rehabilitation Organisation (JARO) first taught cured tuberculosis patients handicraft skills that would enable them to earn a living. This year, the conference will be held at the Persada Johor, International Convention Centre, Johor Bahru, between 20th – 22nd November 2015. The theme for the 24th Malaysian Urological Conference, “Laying the bricks: A milestone in Johor”, very appropriately depicts the strong foundation that we are tirelessly building for a scientifically and technologically advanced Urology centre in the Southern region. The Department of Urology, Hospital Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru (HSAJB), was initially started in 1993. It has evolved over the years to become a major tertiary centre, covering a population of approximately 3.5 million. Apart from providing general Urological services, it is a centre for reconstructive, laparascopic and oncology surgeries. As host state, Johor has always been a melting pot of various cultures. It is a bustling hub of food hawkers, interesting architecture, surrounded by a buzz of urban activity and many cosmopolitan corners to explore, sure to keep our participants enthralled. FREE COMMUNICATIONS could be in the following modes of presentation: 1. Oral 2. Poster 3. Video All accepted abstracts will be publish in the BJUI Supplement. Deadline for submission of abstracts: 1st September 2015 GENERAL GUIDELINES • No limit is imposed on the number of abstracts submitted. • Authors: Authors names should be supplied in the surname-last format and should be in initial capital/ lower case, not all capitals. Institutional affiliations should be indicated with superscript numbers following the author name. • Affiliation: All affiliations should contain institution, city and country. • Abstract text: Sub-headings e.g. Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusions may be included if required. • References: (optional) References can be included in the abstract text or as a list following the abstract. The style of the references should follow the style of the Journal e.g. numbered or author/date style. KERONCONG ZAPIN GHAZAL Believed to have been introduced by MiddleEastern missionaries during the fifteenth century, this exhilarating Arab-influenced dance is characterised by catchy rhythms and captivating moves. It has become a form of traditional entertainment, and reflecting the uniqueness of the communities that have been perfecting this dance over the years, Zapin varies from district to district. Ghazal is an Arab-influenced music created through various musical instruments including the oud (gambus in malay). It was introduced in the royal courts of Johor in the 19th century by members of the aristocracy who first heard the music during their visits to Riau. It was made popular in Johor long before the international world music scene became mainstream in the late 20th century. This melodic musical genre’s name is derived from the ukulelelike instrument that typically accompanies the musical arrangement backing up the soulful singer. Originating from Indonesia, keroncong music still holds its own in most parts of Johor. KUDA KEPANG A mysterious dance originating from Java, Kuda Kepang is rarely performed nowadays but remains a symbol of Johor’s distinction as a cultural destination, as evident in the stylised horse icon in Johor Tourism’s brand identity.
