Smile with Style!
Going to the dentists may be something that fills you with dread whether it’s to
have a check-up, a filling or an extraction, but dentistry has changed so much for
the better and the aim now is for healthy mouths that stay healthy by having regular
check-ups. Teeth are for life and can last a lifetime if they are looked after properly.
You may be surprised to learn that, according to the Adult Dental Health Survey (UK)
of 1998, about three-quarters of the population have some form of gum disease and
more teeth are lost through gum disease than decay. So regular visits to the dentist
are vital, not only to monitor tooth decay, but also to help prevent gum disease.
However, dentistry is no longer just a case of filling and extracting teeth, as it was
for many years. Nowadays, many people turn to cosmetic dentistry, or ‘aesthetic
dentistry’, as a way of improving their appearance, much as they would try a new
hairstyle or perhaps even cosmetic surgery. The treatments can be used to straighten,
lighten, reshape and repair teeth. Cosmetic treatments include veneers, crowns,
bridges and tooth-coloured fillings.
Speak to your dentist who will be delighted to advise you on what is available, and
the costs involved, to give you a smile to be proud of.

Welcome to Kenmore Medical Centre
Kenmore Medical Centre provides primary care services to its registered list of approximately
12,500 patients. The surgery doctors and nurses offer a wide range of clinical skills and
the whole surgery team is committed to providing good quality care to our patients.
In order to maintain good quality services, the surgery limits registration only to those
patients residing within the defined practice area.
Non-UK citizens registering with the surgery are advised that doing so may not necessarily
entitle them to free access to other NHS services, (eg hospital treatment), and they are
advised to clarify their individual situation with the Eastern Cheshire Clinical Commissioning
Group.
This booklet is intended to help you make best use of the surgery facilities and we are grateful
to the Kenmore Patients Group for their significant contribution to the content and layout.

The e-cigarette - an electronic revolution
Back in 2011 when Ecigwizard first started selling e-liquid and e-cigs, if
you were using an electronic cigarette in public, you’d most likely have
received some funny comments! These days though, it is commonplace to
come across people vaping in public - in pubs, clubs and bars amongst other
places. The electronic cigarette revolution has taken society by surprise, with
e-cigs rapidly replacing traditional tobacco sales. E-cigarettes vapourise
e-liquids to produce a vapour that emulates the process of smoking a
“traditional” cigarette. The difference with e-cigs is there is no smoke, no tar
and none of the thousands of harmful chemicals that you get in a cigarette.
This makes e-cigarettes a less harmful alternative to smoking traditional
tobacco cigarettes. Ecigwizard now has two new shops open in Bramhall and
Wilmslow stocking an amazing range of electronic cigarettes and e-liquids
call or visit today and join the electronic revolution. Visit us today at: 218 Moss Lane, Bramhall, Stockport SK7 1BD - Tel: 0161 439 1900 or 57 Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5BQ - Tel: 01625 539 550.

How To Register As A Patient
Patients wishing to join the practice should attend the surgery to complete a new patient
registration pack. Any changes to your registration details must be notified to the practice
as soon as possible.
If you change your address and your new address is outside of the practice area, you will
be asked to register with a practice in your new locality. It sometimes comes as a surprise
for patients who move only a small distance to be asked to do this - if it is important to you,
you are advised to check with the practice that your new address is within the practice
area. Although the practice boundaries are shown on the map at the back of this booklet,
this is only a guide. Our reception staff will be able to confirm whether your new address
is within the area if you give them the exact address.
Patients who change address without notifying the practice will be de-registered and their
records forwarded to Cheshire Health Agency.
Surgery Opening Times
8.00am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday
SOME WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY EVENINGS TO 8.30PM
PLEASE CONTACT RECEPTION FOR MORE INFORMATION.
Closed Weekends and Bank Holidays
For approximately eight afternoons each year, the practice is closed for staff training from
1.00pm; these are advertised well in advance on the practice website and the patient group
newsletter. During these times emergency cover is provided by the Eastern Cheshire
Out-of-Hours Service. The pharmacy will remain open and access will be by the fire door
at the side of the building.
Telephoning the Practice (01625 532244)
Your call will be answered by a pre-recorded message which will give you a number of
choices, so that you can select the service you need. If you have any difficulty following
the instructions then either press two on your telephone, or wait on the line and your call
will automatically go through to a receptionist. If your call can wait, please avoid calling
the practice between 8.00 and 9.30am. This is our peak time for incoming calls and
consequently the queuing time for held calls is longest.

Funeral Director
When you suffer a bereavement, a funeral for a member of your family is the most difficult
day of your life.  Sometimes the death may be expected, but nothing prepares you for the
emotional shock of losing someone close and you may not know what should be done next.
If death occurs at home and is expected, telephone your doctor who will visit to confirm that
death has taken place and advise you how to obtain the certification as to cause of death.
Then contact your local funeral director who will be able to advise you of the next steps.
If death occurs in hospital, contact your local funeral director to engage their services, and
collect the doctor’s certificate as to cause of death from the hospital.
In either case, you should then contact the local registrar for the area in which the death took
place and make an appointment to register the death. If the death is unexpected then contact
your funeral director who will advise you on the procedures.
Throughout all this, your local funeral director is there with help and advice.  They are
dedicated professionals who are able to provide a personal service to you and your family
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Many local funeral directors feel it is a rare privilege to
stand in a sensitive position at this crucial time, in the midst of your family, knowing that the
quality of their service and reputation will help and comfort you through this most difficult
time in your life.  So choose a local Funeral Director who will provide a professional and
personal service.

Making a Routine Appointment
• Telephone 01625 532244 between 8.00am and 6.30pm
• by internet on website www.kenmoremedicalcentre.co.uk
In order to be able to make appointments via the internet, you have to be registered to do
so. For details ask at the reception desk.
Receptionists are busiest between 8.00 and 9.30am, and 12 noon and 2.30pm; at these
times it may take longer for the staff to respond to telephone calls.
A routine appointment to be seen by a doctor can be arranged up to five working days
ahead. Only doctors can arrange follow-up appointments for patients up to six weeks
ahead where they feel this is necessary eg patients referred for tests/investigations.
Normal consultations are for 10 minutes; if felt necessary, longer consultations may be
requested. An appointment is for one patient only and does not cover accompanying
family members or carers. Telephone consultation appointment slots are also available,
bookable in advance.
Text message appointment reminders are available; for further details ask at reception.
Owing to other commitments, the doctor of your choice may not always be available, but
all doctors and nurses have access to your up-to-date medical record.
Making a rapid TRIAGE surgery Appointment
Rapid access appointments with the triage doctor or a nurse clinician are available for
patients with urgent medical problems. Telephone between 8.00 and 11.00am for morning
emergency surgery and after 12 noon for afternoon emergency surgery (3.00 - 5.45pm).
Should the nurse clinician require it, she has free access to the duty doctor as the two
surgeries run in parallel with each other.
Please note that appointment times are only approximate. Some problems will take longer
to deal with than others - we expect our patients to respect that delays may occur because
of the nature of this service. If, after an initial assessment, the clinician seeing you feels
that your problems will be more appropriately dealt with in a longer routine appointment,
you will be asked to rebook one.
Chaperone Policy
When booking your appointment with the doctor please consider whether you are likely to
need a chaperone; if you think you will require a chaperone it would be helpful if you would
let our reception staff know when booking that appointment. For more information on the
practice’s Chaperone Policy see the notice at the automated check-in position.
Home Visits
A home visit may be requested by a patient too ill or infirm to attend the surgery. Telephone
before 10.30am and give the receptionist the full details to allow a doctor to decide whether
and when a home visit is appropriate. Urgent home visits can be requested at any time and
will be passed on to the duty doctor for assessment.

Why make a will?
Messages for Doctors and Nurses
A will is one of the most important documents most
people ever sign yet, surprisingly; only three out of
ten people have a will when they die. Whatever your
circumstances, a will enables you to safeguard the
security of your loved ones and to choose who handles
your possessions after your death by acting as your
executors.
Doctors and nurses cannot take outside calls whilst holding surgeries or clinics. Telephone
requests for advice or information should be made before 11.00am. Receptionists will
record details in the message book. If appropriate the doctor or nurse will call back after
the morning surgery. If you are unavailable on the number when called, the doctor/nurse
will not leave messages due to our confidentiality requirements, nor make further calls.
Without a will, you cannot be certain your husband, wife
or partner (if you are not married) will receive everything
you would wish. By having a valid will you can set out
your wishes clearly and include gifts for friends and
favourite charities. Although you can make your own
will, using a professional is money well spent when
compared to the risk of leaving costly mistakes for your
loved ones to sort out later.
Anyone over 18 can make a will provided they have
testamentary capacity. This means you must understand
the consequences of making a will.
At least every five years, or whenever there are major
changes in your life such as moving house, marriage,
divorce or children, you should check that your will still
reflects your wishes.
It is never too soon to consider a will and the sooner
you have it done the better, like home insurance, motor
insurance etc, you hope you wont use it anytime soon but
your better off having it in place for peace of mind for
yourself and your loved ones.
So do it NOW, for everyone’s benefit!
A spring clean all the year round!
Think back to how good you felt just after taking delivery
of a new suite, or perhaps just having had a new carpet
fitted. New furnishing has a smell all its own, doesn’t it
and for the first month or so, extreme care is taken.
However, as with all things, ‘life’ soon intervenes and all
too soon the new furnishings become, quite literally, ‘part
of the furniture’.
Obviously it would be impractical, not to mention
prohibitively expensive, to replace furnishings and carpets
every six months or so – BUT you can enjoy many of the
benefits of new furnishings by having your home or office
cleaned regularly by a local, reputable firm.
What a treat to come in from work and be able to just walk
in and sit down and enjoy your home without having to
rush round and clean it. Perhaps you have been ill or are
just getting older and slowing down and don’t feel able to
really keep on top of the cleaning as you like it.
Many local contractors offer a range of services for your
home and garden, so contact your local contractor who
will be delighted to explain the range of services they
offer, all designed to give you and your home or office
a real lift, and create a healthier environment. So don’t
wait for spring. Contact your local contractor and enjoy
the benefits right now!

Appointment Delays and Cancellations
If surgeries have to be cancelled for any reason, our receptionists will try to notify you as
quickly as possible.
Doctors endeavour to see patients on time, but if they are running seriously late for any
reason or emergency, you will be informed. Delays of this kind are rare but unavoidable,
and your patience is requested.
If you are unable to attend an appointment, please inform reception as far in advance as
possible, in order to free time for another patient.
Patients who repeatedly fail to keep appointments or cancel them at short notice may, if
they persist after a written warning, be removed from the practice list.
Eastern Cheshire GP Out-of-hours Service
Telephone 01625 502999
The service is based alongside the Accident and Emergency Department at Macclesfield
Hospital. A triage nurse will either give advice on the basis of the information you give or
will arrange for a doctors consultation, either at an out-of-hours centre or by a home visit.
The service operates:
• Weekdays 6.30pm to 8.00am
• Weekends and Bank Holidays
• When the surgery is closed for training sessions
You may also contact the new 111 service
To do this Dial 111 from your telephone
You may also contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647
or online at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk
Specialist Referrals
The practice uses the computerised 'Choose and Book' system for referring patients to
hospital specialists on the NHS. Under this system the doctor referring you will discuss
your referral with you and offer you a choice of hospitals.
If you have access to the internet or know someone who can access it for you, there
is also some comparative 'performance' information available off the Dr Foster website
www.drfosterhealth.co.uk under the 'Information for the Public' section (also accessible via
the surgery website).

What is Yoga?
Yoga is a generic word (such as health, fitness)
and means union (from the root Sanskrit verb:
Yug ~ to join). It is often interpreted as the union
of mind, body and soul, and can provide perfect
harmony and balance. It is believed that yoga
originated in India circa 2000 BC.
Some classes may be low impact while others
can be very demanding but in our hectic modern
world, many people are choosing to practise
yoga. Everyone can practise yoga, regardless
of age, sex, ability or fitness level, as it offers
a holistic approach to body, mind and spirit,
which can provide a means of coping with the
daily stresses and problems of life. Yoga can also
complement medical science and offer therapy
for wide ranging specific conditions from back
problems to respiratory problems.
You may be drawn to yoga simply to improve your
health and fitness, or be seeking relief for a specific
physical condition. Whatever your objectives, there
are yoga classes that can meet them.

Test Results
Doctors and nurses will advise patients whether and how discussion of results will be needed.
As a general rule, the surgery will not contact patients about test results that are normal.
All clinical staff within the practice have access to an individual's test results for discussion,
ensuring continuity of care during holiday or absences by your regular GP.
Pregnancy Testing
For a free pregnancy test, a urine sample must be supplied in a suitable container. Allow
three days for results to be returned to the surgery from Macclesfield Hospital. Routine
same-day pregnancy tests are not provided by the practice, but this service can be
purchased from local pharmacies.
Smoking Cessation Support
Weekly appointments are available with the Community Stop Smoking Adviser. Stop
Smoking Group sessions are available within the practice area.
Immunisation and Travel Advice
Routine immunisations required within the UK, eg tetanus and polio, can be given by
appointment at nurses' general clinics.
Regular travel clinics are run by the nurses. Here they give advice on aspects of healthcare
for people planning to travel overseas, but note that appointments should be made well
in advance of proposed travel. A charge may be made for some vaccines given at these.
As appointments for these clinics may not be available at short notice, patients urgently
requiring vaccines may be advised to contact local commercial travel advice clinics.

Don’t Move - Improve!
Alternatively look at using your existing floor space
more productively. The basic layout of a house rarely
changes, yet the way we live in and use our homes has
changed.
A house constructed in the 60’s rarely meets the needs of
a modern family without some re-organisation.
By changing the way rooms are accessed, moving
thoroughfares and even windows, furniture can
be re-distributed and new areas of light and space
become accessible.
Dividing large bedrooms may be the answer to siblings
currently having to share.
If making these changes to your home is something you
would like to consider, ensure you turn to a reputable
local builder to discuss your ideas. It could be that you
require planning permission or building regulations, a
reputable builder should be able to offer advice on this.
Why your business needs a website
WITHOUT a website, your business or practice is
invisible to the two thirds of prospective clients that
use the Internet to locate products and services, and
this figure grows daily.
Worse still, if your competitors have a website and
you don’t, then they are picking up your share of
the prospects for your type of business when they
search online.
Pay As You Go websites are proving to be a godsend
to small and medium-sized businesses across the
UK and Ireland.
Introduced by OPG Ltd, who have been building
websites for more than eight years, and who have
been helping businesses grow and prosper for over
30 years, they provide businesses and professional
practices with 24/7 access to their targeted market.

Carers
The practice maintains a register of carers. If you wish your details to be added to the
register please contact the Health Care Assistant Shirley Hindle on 01625 532244.
If you are providing ongoing help and support to someone with a disability or illness, you
may wish to register with Cheshire Carers on 0800 085 0307.
Kenmore Patients' Group
A Patients’ Group holds regular meetings along with practice personnel to discuss ways
of improving the quality of services to patients and assisting the practice in communicating
news and information to its patients. A KPG newsletter is published several times a year
and can be collected from the waiting room. If you have any comments or suggestions you
can email the patient group at [email protected] Anyone interested in joining this
group is invited to contact the Kenmore Patients Group Chair c/o the General Manager.
Patients' Suggestions
The practice aims to nurture partnership with patients by giving the highest possible
standards of service while expecting responsibility in observing the necessary conditions
attached to those services.
Complaints
A procedure for dealing with patients' grievances or complaints operates in accordance
with national criteria laid down by the NHS. Advice on how to make a complaint is available
at reception - where you can collect an information leaflet. If you wish to discuss your
complaint informally, you can do this by contacting the General Manager in writing, or by
telephone on 01625 532244. It is preferred that any formal complaint is made in writing
and forwarded to the practice within 48 hours when it will be dealt with thoroughly, speedily
and confidentially.
Zero Tolerance Policy
The practice operates a Zero Tolerance Policy for verbal or physical aggression against
its doctors and staff, and retains the right to remove from the practice list any patient who
demonstrates threatening or abusive behaviour or language. Removal from the registered
list will be notified by letter, giving reasons.
Patients' Medical Records
Patients’ records, held in computerised form, are fully protected as required under statutory
guidelines for patient confidentiality and data protection. Information from records is
released only with the permission of the patient, although this may be assumed where a
patient is being referred to another health professional. The NHS is currently developing a
Centralised Patient Records system whereby information from their computerised records
will be downloaded from the surgery to a central computer. The NHS has published specific
guidance to patients wishing to opt out of this arrangement. Full details and the necessary
application forms are available from reception.

the lift, please press the bell.
Disabled parking spaces are available.
Car Parking
Spaces for parking up to 30 cars are provided within the practice grounds. These are
available only for use by patients or visitors to the surgery. There is also a parent and

by walking or cycling to the surgery.

Medical Emergencies
Management Of Sudden Chest Pain In Adults
It is important that there is no delay in your being assessed and treated for a possible heart
attack if you experience sudden chest pain. The quickest way to do this is to dial 999 –
telephoning the surgery will only cause delay. Once an ambulance call has been made the
crew will notify the Accident and Emergency department that you are on your way.
This will alert the cardiac team to be waiting with equipment and drugs – with a heart
attack, the quicker these drugs are given the more effective they will be.
You do not need to be concerned that your pain may turn out not to be a heart attack –
there can be false alarms – but getting to A & E without delay offers the best chance of a
good outcome if you are having a heart attack.
(This advice has been disseminated by the Macclesfield A&E Consultant to all surgeries in
the area.)
Making Use of your Local Pharmacist
You can count on your local pharmacist to help you with any questions you might have
about your medical conditions or treatments. Pharmacists are available to assist you
without an appointment, up to six days a week. As highly trained health care professionals,
they adhere to the same rules of privacy and confidentiality as your doctors. This extensive
training makes them experts about your medications. So, when you need information, help
and understanding about making the most of your medicines, ask your pharmacist.
Pharmacists are qualified to give good advice about the availability and use of overthe-counter medicines. They can also advise on self-care medications to deal with mild
symptoms.
Some factors to consider when taking medications include allergies, medical history and
possible interactions between medications or with food and supplements. Keep your
pharmacist informed about any changes in your personal medical profile, and share
information about any over-the-counter (OTC) medications, herbal remedies, vitamins or
dietary supplements you might be taking.
