GO SPURS GO! Wow… what an exciting
time for San Antonio! Our Spurs won their
4th Championship and Boysville is among the
many fans extending congratulations to
the team.
The 8th Annual Arthur O’Krent Humanitarian Award
Dinner was held on June 14, the same night the Spurs
won the championship. Our guests were treated to a
wonderful dinner and a fabulous treat: The Greehey family
arranged for our guests to watch the game and cheer the
Spurs. Special thanks to Sam O’Krent for serving as our
Master of Ceremonies, and to the NuStar Corporation for
their help in making this event a success!
Speaking of champions, our children have proven themselves champions as well. Many of our high school and
middle school children traveled to Missouri to participate in
the H’Olympics. Our athletes brought home a record
number of medals and the coveted Ken Coleman award.
This summer our children enjoyed summer camps, day
camps and sports camps. Our high school graduates are
preparing to go off to various colleges and one of our
young men has left for the Navy. Our new seniors are
gearing up for their final year and our children are ready
for back-to-school.
In August, there are two great opportunities for you to help
our children:
San Antonio’s fastest growing golf tournament, The
Heatwave Golf Tournament, will be held Saturday, August
18 at the Canyon Springs Golf Club. Board members
Edward DeWees and Mark Meador have made this a
highly successful charity tournament. Edward and Mark’s
philosophy of “having fun while making a difference” is
definitely seen in this tournament.
You can “Be A Champion for Children” at our 41st Annual
Wildest Auction in the West to be held on August 24, 2007.
Bruce Bowen and his wife, Yardley, will be the honorary
chairs. Knowing Bruce, we will have a few surprises at the
auction and you won’t want to miss it! Bill Taylor is back as
master of ceremonies and Lil’ Bit and the Customatics will
provide the entertainment. Come enjoy the great food and
silent auction … and our live auction, which promises
many great items and surprises!
Through your support of these two fundraisers, you are
helping us to complete our mission of providing a safe
family environment for children in need so that they
can become responsible adults. Thank you for your
continued support!

Martha Hixon, daughter of the late Jodie McCarley ( a Boysville

support our college bound students through their generosity to our
scholarship program. In 1998, Martha’s father created a Lead

scholarships for tuition, room and board. As administrator of the

Joyce has been an active member of the Boysville Auxiliary since
1998. Every Wednesday, she volunteers her time as a cashier in
the Thrift Store. She is constantly looking for ways to make the
Thrift Store better in its operations and customer service.
Joyce’s optimistic personality has a positive effect on everyone
around her and she treats customers and employees of the Thrift
Store with dignity and respect. Her late husband, Arthur, was an
active member of the Optimist Club of San Antonio, and Joyce has
continued the O’Krent tradition of passionate involvement in
charitable work.

path to gold!
The Boysville Bobcats Home Olympics (H’Olympics) team
traveled to Springfield, MO for the National Fellowship
of Child Care Executives annual competition. Children’s
homes from across the country participated in the games.
The 28-member team of boys and girls ages 11-19 competed in
basketball, volleyball, softball, track and field and swimming. The Bobcats won an
unprecedented 58 individual medals and 19 team and relay medals. For the first time, Boysville won the coveted
Ken Coleman trophy. The award is given to the team that best exhibits the Home Olympic values and traditions.
Cindy C. and Devonte A. won the Hustle Award.
It wasn’t all work for the team, either. The Boysville
8
residents also enjoyed a day in Oklahoma City, touring
the Murrah Memorial and Frontier City.
Special thanks to all the coaches and staff.

those lazy crazy
days of summer
During summer vacation from school, our children
stayed busy with H-E-B camp, Camp Wildbeast and
FCA camp. Summer provides the children and staff
with a relaxing break … so that we’re refreshed and
ready to tackle a new school year.
Camp Wildbeast is a week-long day camp for
residents 4-14 years old — and it’s held right here
on our campus. Many of the children have never
before attended camp and they have a wonderful
time. The campers enjoyed cooking, arts and crafts,
a 4-H class and good food. The rain kept them out
of the pool but they had lots of fun in the gym.
community ne
cheers for volunteers
The Boysville Volunteer Program offers many
new and exciting programs for all our big-hearted friends in the community — and we hope
you’ll join us. During this past quarter, volunteers
donated over 250 accounted hours
to Boysville!
It takes a village to raise our children and we
need you to step into our little village as a
10
mentor or babysitter … or get a group of your
friends, church members or work colleagues
together to help at a campus activity. Volunteers
also are needed to help with special events on
and off campus.
Fifteen of our boys are awaiting mentors. Some
of these boys have been waiting for over six
months for that one individual who can donate at
least eight hours a month to help a child in need.
Being a mentor is very gratifying to the child
and the mentor — and you get to engage in fun
activities like bowling, putt-putt golf and more.
Our Foster Care parents are in need of a date
night! Often, our Foster Care parents work
continuous hours for several weeks without a
break. Like the rest of us, they need a night off
to see a movie, eat dinner without cutting someone else’s food or go shopping. Once a month,
we ask volunteers to come out and baby-sit
some of our children. This is great opportunity
for high school youth groups to gain community
service hours once a month.
If you would like to learn more about how
you can get involved, please contact Andrea
Carranco at [email protected] or

More Ways To Help …
birdies for charity
Win a Buick! Help Boysville!
Birdies for Charity, sponsored by the 2007 Valero Texas Open,
Volunteers!
We need volunteers at the Boysville Auxiliary Thrift Store
to perform many different functions. Whether you’re an
individual or a group seeking meaningful volunteer work,
consider these duties and see what interests you: sort
donated items; clean, dust, and straighten up the shop;
and help with customer sales and service.
offers our supporters an opportunity to win a new Buick …
walk-a-thon, but instead of donating per mile, you can make a
pledge for every birdie carded at the tournament. Last year,
the birdie count was 2,159 … so a pledge of one cent per
birdie resulted in a donation of $21.59. If you prefer, you can
make a flat donation of $20 or more.
Simply guess how many total birdies will be made during the
tournament week – Wednesday, October 3 through Sunday,
October 7. The individual with the correct guess wins the
grand prize — a 2007 Buick. If no one guesses correctly, there
will be a random draw to determine the winner.
Boysville receives 100% of every penny raised through Birdies
for Charity in Boysville’s name. Boysville will also be eligible
for additional cash incentives and a grant offered through the
Valero Texas Open. In 2004, Boysville received a grant that
allowed us to expand our Emergency Shelter to care for more
infants and toddlers.
Please support Birdies for Charity by returning the enclosed
pledge form to Boysville or go online
at www.golfsanantonio.org and
designate Boysville as
your charity of choice.
Recycling!
Here’s another way you can help: The Boysville Auxiliary is
raising money for the Thrift Store by recycling old cell phones
and used ink jet and laser jet cartridges. Give us your old
stuff! Not only will you be helping the environment … you’ll
be helping our children! If you would like a recycling box
for your office or business, contact Mary Marsh at
(210) 445-0048.

Coffee!
The Boysville Auxiliary has teamed up with one of the
country’s top coffee roasters to sell gourmet coffees, teas,
coffee accents, flavored creamers and flavoring powders.
These yummy treats will be available at the Auxiliary’s booth
at Boysville’s 41st Wildest Auction in the West. Sold in one
pound bags, you can choose from among such delicious
coffees as Costa Rica Reserve, Colombia Supremo, Kenya,
Butterscotch Toffee Cream, Hazelnut, Rain Forest Crunch
and many more in both regular and decaf.
If you’d like to pre-order for pickup at the Auction, please
drop by the Thrift Store to see our selection … and while
you’re here, you might want to do a little bargain shopping.
To get a complete list of coffees, teas and flavorings,
e-mail Mary Marsh at [email protected] or call
(210) 445-0048.
The Boysville Auxiliary Thrift Store operates to help feed and
clothe Boysville’s children. If you have time or resources to
share, please contact Vangie at (210) 826-2195.

the kids come first!
MSgt Kenneth C. Staley, also known as Sarge, passed away at
the age of 95. Sarge and his wife, Lillie, worked at Boysville for
over 20 years. Known for his wonderful and creative cooking and
great negotiating skills, Sarge was a long time cook for Boysville at
the second campus. His daughter, Kathy Staley, told the story of
Sarge coming to Boysville:
“Dad had just retired from the Air Force and found Boysville. The
boys were eating cold food for breakfast and other meals. Sarge
began contacting area meat lockers working to get donated
venison, beef or whatever else they had in surplus. The Broadway
Locker Plant was the first to help out by sending over excess
venison.”
12
Sarge started up his kitchen by making pancakes and made the
houseparents wait until all the kids were served, by saying “These
kids come first!”

Marshal Dodge, longtime Boysville
Board Member and Optimist Club of San
Antonio, passed away on June 26, 2007.
Dodge collapsed at home from a stroke.
Dodge was a charter member of the
Community Education Advisory Council
He also taught the boys the meaning of hard work. Dad would
have “G.I. Parties.” He would have the boys clean the kitchen
as they did in the military and if it wasn’t right, he would make
them do it all over again. Dad and Mom brought boys home for
holidays. Mom said there would be boys waiting on the curb for
their families to pick them up for a visit and the families would
not come.”
When Sarge and Lillie retired, they
continued to support Boysville by
attending functions, bringing
home boys during holidays and
supporting the auction, then held
on campus, by continuing to
make his famous cobblers.
Sarge and Lillie were honored
as Arch Angels, Boysville’s
highest volunteer award, in
1983. After Lillie’s death last
year, Sarge continued to
attend Boysville events,
including the Wildest Auction
in the West in 2006. Sarge
will be greatly missed.

A member of the Optimist Club of San

For more than 15 years, he was either

area Council of Optimist Presidents.
A descendant of immigrants who arrived

4-H awards program
The Connell Center held its annual awards program for the
children at Boysville involved in the 4-H program. The youth
received accolades for the time that they spent working with
livestock and other programs where they were able to learn life
skills, team work and responsibility.
The youth beamed with pride as they received medals,
certificates and other awards. This year the Connell
Barn Staff recognized two Outstanding 4-H Youth.
14
Shakyra L. and Robert B. both exhibit an exemplary
attitude that 4-H strives to instill in youth today. They
have excelled in both school and their personal
lives, thus becoming role models for younger children that are at Boysville. Each recipient received
a 4-H belt buckle.
Our volunteers were also honored for giving of
their time to plan and conduct activities for the
children. Kudos go to Melva and Brandy Waggoner, Dawn Cook, Diane Garza, John and Kyle
Dikes. Special thanks also to the Connell Farm
Staff Beth Dikes and Syl Burkemper for their
time and dedication throughout the year.
