A M E S S AG E FRO M D R. A NNE PRISC O
Dear Friends,
It is a pleasure to present the Felician College Annual report.
As I reflect upon the past academic year, my first as president, I do so with
immense gratitude. I have been encouraged and inspired by the efforts of
so many, and am continually impressed by the dedication of our hardworking faculty and staff as well as the commitment to learning of our
extraordinary students.
Fiscal trends are clearly impacting the landscape of higher education, and
we are not immune to their influences. As president, my top priority and
greatest challenge is to control costs and align resources to uphold and
strengthen the excellent educational experience that defines Felician.
We continue to upgrade our facilities, including newly refurbished biology
labs, a technology project that will make both campuses wireless, new
spaces in the restored historic Castle for student use as well as staff, faculty and community meetings, and completely renovated residence halls.
Construction is underway on what will be our new education commons.
This state-of-the art building on the Rutherford campus will house library
services, individual and group study spaces, high-tech classrooms and a
nursing skills resource center.
Our commitment to the Felician Franciscan mission remains steadfast.
Our teaching-learning experience continues to be a hallmark of what is
distinct about a Felician College education: an experience that encourages
you to have an open mind and heart, enables you to find a sense of self with
educational and community opportunities, and inspires you to be more
than you ever imagined. Felician students continually offer their time and
talents to individuals and organizations in need – a true testament to the
living mission and values of our Franciscan heritage.
We thank you for your generous support of Felician College and its students. Your commitment truly energizes our College community, ensures
our future success and allows us to continue to provide an affordable, high
quality education to all who desire one.
In the words of Saint Francis of Assisi, pace e bene.
Anne M. Prisco, Ph.D.
Honors Convocation
Celebrates Academic
Excellence
The Franciscan values of respect, peace and seeking the good in all
mankind were among the compelling messages brought to life at the
Academic Honors Convocation on November 7, which celebrated
excellence in the classroom by students and faculty alike.
Felician College President Dr. Anne Prisco and Sister Mary Rosita
Brennan, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, greeted the
audience of faculty members, Dean’s List recipients and their friends
and family who gathered in the Breslin Auditorium on the Lodi campus
for the ceremony.
“This is a night to truly celebrate academic excellence,” said Sister
Rosita, noting that more than 500 students were on the Spring 2013
Deans List, which requires a 3.5 grade point average.
Dr. Prisco told those in attendance: “It’s always a pleasure to honor our
students, as well as our faculty, and to applaud their efforts, tireless
dedication and countless hours of study and hard work. And it is our
mission, as a Franciscan community, to provide each individual with
the educational opportunities that bring you to your highest potential
with informed minds and understanding hearts.”
Dr. Prisco, along with Sister Rosita and Dr. Charles Rooney, Senior
Executive Vice President, conferred an honorary doctor of Humane
Letters upon Father Andre Cirino, who was the keynote speaker for
the ceremony.
Father Andre, a renowned presenter of the works of Saint Francis, the
patron of Felician College, also has led travelers to Francis’ hometown
of Assisi, Prague, Germany and the California Missions for Franciscan
Pilgrimage Programs. He has many published works on the Franciscan
traditions, and shared those messages during his address.
“Only God is good but it must flow through us,” Father Andre told the
audience. “That message is the hope of the Franciscan theology – that
we always try to speak to the good that is in people, as Francis did.”
Among the other highlights of the evening were the musical selections
by the Felician College choir and the presentation by Sister Rosita of
the Faculty Excellence Award, which was given to Dr. Sherida Yoder of
the English Department.
“Teaching is an art just as poetry is an art,” said Dr. Yoder in accepting
the honor. “If one can improve every year, every semester, it’s as high a
calling as we can receive.”

of the State Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses
(NAHN) to explore partnership opportunities among the School
of Nursing, the Association and the Latino community. Currently,
Hispanic nurses represent 18.5 percent of enrollment in the School of
Nursing.

Where Were You When...?
lecture series held on December 4 in Obal Hall on the Lodi campus of
Felician College.
In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of
President John F. Kennedy, students on staff at Felician College’s radio
station interviewed staff and faculty and created a one-hour program
that was aired between November 18 and December 1. The program
included first-person accounts of November 22, 1963, and interviewees’ thoughts on how the tragic event changed the course of history and
impacted our country’s political and social scenes.
A capacity crowd heard about the horrors of human trafficking and its
impact on our global and local societies. Included in the presentation
was a video entitled “Human Trafficking: The Unspoken Truth,” created by Felician College students
who participate in the United Nations Fellows
Program.
Professor Terry McAteer, Chair, Felician College Communications
Department, oversaw the project, which received widespread acclaim
and was featured in the local newspaper, the South Bergenite.
WRFC, Radio Felician College, is a 24/7 internet-based, student run
radio station. The WRFC staff design their own shows, select their music and discussion topics, and run the station’s digital radio equipment.
Membership in WRFC’s staff is open to any student at the college.
Lecture Series Tackles
Serious Topics
“Super Bowl XLVIII, Human Trafficking: The Uninvited Guest” was
the topic for discussion during the “Conversations That Matter”
Felician College President Dr. Anne Prisco said,
“Our institutional motto, ‘In Veritas Felicitas’ – in
truth is happiness -- is difficult to accept after
today’s session on human trafficking. While the facts are
disturbing, the efforts of those who
are embracing

thing about this, are examples of the power of individual and collective
action. These advocates are living examples of our Felician Franciscan
value of justice and peace that calls on us to advocate for social changes
that promote respect for all persons.”
Guest speaker Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle (D-37), a
proponent of anti-trafficking legislation in the state, applauded the
College’s initiative in tackling such a strong issue.
“This is not just happening in some remote corner of the world. This is
modern day slavery that is happening right here in our backyards,” said
Assemblywoman Huttle.
The topic was of particular interest as the NY/NJ area prepared to host
the Super Bowl in February. Statistics show that an estimated 10,000
children and adults were trafficked into the Miami area before and during the Super Bowl in 2010. In the weeks before the big game, authorities took extra steps to thwart the number of potential victims in the
metropolitan region.
Patricia Devine-Harms, legislative chair for the NJ Coalition Against
Human Trafficking, also was in attendance. She urged continued
involvement and awareness and lauded Felician’s students for being
“abolitionists.”

Syria Crisis the Focus
of ‘Open Mic’ session at
Felician
Several hundred students, faculty and staff members attended an open
microphone session, presented by the School of Arts and Sciences together with the Office of Mission Integration, to discuss the escalating
crisis in Syria and the possibility of involvement by the United States.
Dr. Robert Ingoglia, professor in the Department of History at Felician
College, said that given the possibility of American intervention in the
Syrian civil war, “we should meet and discuss our individual concerns
regarding the current situation.”
“Issues concerning war and peace were so very important to Saint
Francis and, as part of our contemporary Franciscan/Felician family,
are equally important to all of us, irrespective of our different faiths
and beliefs,” said Dr. Ingoglia.
Throughout the session, which took place in the Lecture Hall in Obal
Hall on the College’s Lodi campus, members of the Felician community
– faculty, staff and students -- took turns in stepping to the podium to
6
express their opinions about America’s possible intervention, as well as
offer suggestions as to how their “voices” can be heard.
There was no clear cut sway on either front, for or against U.S. military
action. One thing was clear, however – the thought-provoking topic hit
a chord with many people in the room.
Some who spoke recalled the reaction of the American people during
the Vietnam conflict and the U.S. response to the Sept. 11 tragedy. Others encouraged contacting local representatives to have their opinions
acknowledged.
One student spoke of what it meant to have friends and family in the
U.S. military during a time of crisis. Another told the audience that we
as Americans should first examine our own freedoms before taking any
action.
Ultimately, the overwhelming theme was a message steeped in the
Felician core values: we should strive for peace and a prayerful solution
to the conflict.
“I am so very impressed both with the passion of the speakers and their
willingness to hear and consider other people’s views. I am so very
proud of all of our students.” said Dr. Ingoglia.

Dream Internship for
Felician Student
For Caroline MacDonald, the past few months have been a case of life
imitating art.
“I grew up watching Court TV and other cops shows like ‘Law & Order’
with my mother and I thought it was interesting to see how crimes
were solved,” said Caroline, who is majoring in Felician College’s
Criminal Justice program. This fall, the junior got hands-on experience
with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office as an intern in the Bureau of
Crime Investigation’s Crime Scene Unit.
“I really got a look at how forensics works,” said Caroline, who carried a
full course load of 19 credits while doing her internship. “It was a great
experience.”
Caroline said most of her intern work dealt with forensics, such as fingerprinting and processing evidence. “We also processed samples that
may or may not have been blood from crime scenes,” she said.
Her favorite part of the
work?
“Ballistics was definitely
the most interesting,
although nothing is done as
quickly as television makes
you believe,” she laughed.
“Sometimes it takes a long
time and you don’t always
get answers but still, it’s very
cool stuff.”
Brian Kelly, Assistant Professor, Criminal Justice, said Caroline’s “outstanding communication
and writing skills” are among the most important components when
entering a field like Criminal Justice.
“These skills have allowed her to excel not only in the classroom, but
in most importantly in ‘real-life’ endeavors, specifically her internship
with the Sheriff’s Department,” said Professor Kelly. “Such an internship is priceless because it allows the student to observe what actually
occurs in a law enforcement or social services agency while utilizing
skills and knowledge learned in the classroom.”

Chronicles
Caroline said part of the experience involved studying photos of old
crime scenes and autopsies. “You definitely get used to it but some of it
can be shocking at first,” she said. “But that’s a big part of the job.”
Caroline, who also is minoring in Cybersecurity, has her sights on
another internship opportunity for the spring semester. This one takes
it cues from the other side of the ‘Law & Order’ format.
“I’ve applied to be a paralegal intern,” Caroline said. “It still deals with
crimes and investigation but from a different angle, so it should be just
as interesting.”
Felician Career Services
Making a Difference
Felician College was named the Career Center of the Month in November by the New Jersey Association of Colleges and Employers.
Melissa Faulkner, Director, Career Development Center at Felician,
serves as President Elect/Vice President of Programming for the
NJACE, said the honor further increases Felician’s visibility among the
business community.
8
The Felician College Veterans Task force commemorated Veterans Day in
a solemn ceremony on Monday, November 11 in front of Obal Hall on the
Lodi campus. Members of the Lyndhurst Veterans Alliance Post 139 were
guest presenters for the event, which included remarks by Felician College
President Dr. Anne Prisco, Dr. Howard Burrell of Felician College, and
Lodi Councilman Bruce Masopust, pictured.
“The connections forged by the members in this association yields
more collaboration on events, and ultimately our students will benefit,”
said Ms. Faulkner.
Established in the 1970s, the NJACE’s focus is to continually increase
the competency and professionalism of Career Centers, provide programs of clear value to colleges and employers and inspire the highest
level of active participation from our career services and employer
membership. Currently, membership consists of 27 New Jersey colleges and universities and 11 employers.
Ms. Faulkner noted that a Felician student, Korey McGuiness, who participated in the summer internship program with an NJACE business,
received high marks from the organization.
“Korey was hired by Enterprise Rent-A-Car and ended up being the
highest performing intern in the country during the summer of 2013,”
Chronicles
said Ms. Faulkner. “That says a lot about Felician students.”
She added that Felician College is joining forces with Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck to co-host career fairs this fall and next
spring. The co-sponsored fair is scheduled for October 30 from 12-4
p.m. at FDU.
“This will increase employer exposure to our students and student
exposure to the professional world,” said Ms. Faulkner.
Felician College’s Career Development Center provides students with
a host of services, including self-assessment tools, job sources, internship information, assistance with job search skills, and guidance and
preparation for graduate school.
Felician College Named
Military Friendly School
for 3rd Consecutive Year
For the third consecutive year, Felician College has been named by
Victory Media as a Military Friendly School for its commitment to
providing a support environment for armed forces veterans and their
families.
Felician’s inclusion on the list, which is the result of a survey of more
than 12,000 schools, ranks it in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide.
As a military friendly institution, Felician offers dedicated financial
benefits and has created uniquely tailored programs to help veterans
achieve their academic goals.
Construction has begun on the
Education Commons building
on the Rutherford campus. The
building will include a Nursing
Resource and Simulation
Center, a high-tech eLibrary,
and state-of-the-art classrooms
and laboratories. Anticipated
opening is early 2015.
Bachelor Degree programs that qualify for a military grant include
Business, Computer Information Systems (CIS), Criminal Justice,
Professional Studies, Healthcare Administration, Education and
English. Fast-track programs feature evening classes in eight-week
sessions that allow students to further their educations while working
during the day.
“Felician College’s commitment to the military program shows a deep
appreciation for the men and women who have bravely served our
country,” said Felician College President Dr. Anne Prisco. “It also is a
shining example of our Franciscan values of compassion and respect
for all. I’m very proud of the College’s participation in this important
initiative.”
ICONIC IMAGE
The Castle at Felician College is one of 19 images featured in a mural commissioned by the Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce to commemorate
the 40th anniversary issue of the MRCC’s publication, Meadowlands USA. The 145-year-old Castle, located on Felician’s picturesque Rutherford campus, was
chosen to be included in the artwork created by New Jersey artist James Fiorentino, called “The Meadowlands Experience,” along with the Liberty Science
Center, the Meadowlands Rail Station at the Sports Complex, Teterboro Airport, Met Life Stadium and the Statue of Liberty, among others.
Pictured with a replica of the mural is Felician College President Dr. Anne Prisco, left, with Rick Dabagian, member of the College’s Council of Regents, center,

Mission
Incoming freshmen and student athletes received a special blessing
during a Mass on Sept. 11 to begin the Fall semester. Below, Felician
College President Dr. Anne Prisco, center, and Board of Trustees member
Ray Bramucci, right, welcome Bergen County Executive Kathleen
Donovan, who addressed those in attendance following the Mass.
Felician Community
Gathers for Christmas
Crib and Tree Blessing
The Felician Community gathered for the annual blessing of the
Christmas crib and tree in the lobby of Obal Hall on the Lodi campus.
Carols were sung between liturgical readings which were offered by
Father Damian Colicchio, Father John O’Neill and several students.
Felician College’s patron Saint Francis of Assisi is credited with the
creation of the first nativity scene (the Christmas crèche) in 1223 having been inspired by his visit to the Holy Land where he visited Jesus’
birthplace. Francis was to celebrate Christmas Eve Mass in the woods
of Greccio near Assisi and asked that a manger, hay and animals be
brought to the makeshift altar to replicate the birth of the infant Jesus.
As the crowds gathered to celebrate, Francis is said to have stretched
out his arms as if the Holy Child were there, and the manger became
radiant with the light of the newborn King.
The tradition of the Christmas crib spread throughout the Christian
world and remains in churches, homes and places of worship today.
Members of the Felician College community brought their pets to campus
for the annual blessing of animals on the feast day of Saint Francis, Oct.
3. Pictured is Father Damian Colicchio blessing Tami, with owner Ernie
Bernarducci.
PRAYERFUL START TO SEMESTER
Student leaders gathered for a daylong retreat in Kearny at the beginning
of the Fall semester. The theme “Standing on the shoulders of those who
came before us” was incorporated into the leadership-centered activities
where students reflected on the core values of the Franciscan tradition.
Pictured with students are Sister Juanita Arnsiter, Vice President for
Mission Integration, and Sister Mary Theresa, Campus Ministry, right.

Felician College Golf
Classic Benefits Student
Scholarship Fund
More than 100 golfers and friends enjoyed a delightful autumn day
for the 28th Annual Felician College Golf Classic held at Glen Ridge
Country Club.
The annual event benefits the College’s Scholarship Fund, which provides in excess of $13 million each year to students in need of financial
support.
In addition to the College’s supporters, members of the Felician men’s
golf team were on hand during the day. Among them was Jordan Tackett, an academic and athletic scholarship recipient, who addressed the
crowd during dinner.
“They said I’d never be able to play sports in college because I had
medical problems when I was younger,” said Tackett, a junior who is
studying business administration. “Felician offered me an opportunity
of a lifetime. I will always be grateful and will work hard to make the
most of this chance I’ve been given.”
“How lucky we are that we can share this day and come together for
such a good cause, namely our students,” said Felician College President Dr. Anne Prisco, drawing upon the words by the Felician Sisters
foundress, Blessed Mary Angela. “A community spirit does not just
happen of itself. It flows from people who share a common tradition
and strive for a common goal outside themselves.
“Jordan’s story is an example of how students are impacted by your
support. As a Franciscan institution, our mission is to follow the values
of respect for all, compassion for those who need assistance, and joy in
everything we do. By providing educational and financial opportunities to our students, we are living that mission and establishing strong
foundations for their futures.”

the Golden part because no other school in the country had that name
and it was unique,” said Mr. Symons. “Part of the tradition, though, was
with Saint Francis, who is sometimes depicted in some pictures with a
falcon, so it was a perfect match.”
Mr. Symons later became the first head coach for men’s and women’s
cross-country. He guided the men’s squad to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championships in 2000 and 2001, and was named
CACC men’s Coach of the Year each season.
Lynn Wiebe graciously acknowledged her late husband’s dedication to
Felician.
Felician Inducts Symons,
Wiebe to Inaugural Hall
of Fame Class
Felician College President Dr. Anne M. Prisco presented for induction
Robert D. “Bob” Symons and the late Dr. Russel Wiebe into the Felician
College Athletics Hall of Fame at the group’s inaugural banquet and
induction ceremony on September 20.
Dr. Prisco welcomed all in attendance, and congratulated Symons and
Lynn Wiebe, wife of the late Russel Wiebe, who accepted the award
with her daughter Ava, age 12.
“This is a wonderful evening, and I feel very lucky that we’re getting to
do this together tonight,” said Dr. Prisco, applauding the debut of the
College’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Felician’s athletic program began in
1996.
“As a Catholic, Felician Franciscan College, we have to think about
what matters and what makes us different,” she said. “The role of Division II sports is to develop student-athletes. I so admire the discipline
and sportsmanship that is nurtured, which allows them to be successful athletes and successful in the classroom.”
Mr. Symons was Felician’s first director of athletics. He came to Felician in the summer of 1993, more than three years before the Golden
Falcons’ initial intercollegiate event. Mr. Symons designed the College’s first fitness center, and helped the new program gain national
affiliation into the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics.
“How many people get a chance to build a program from scratch?”
Mr. Symons said in his acceptance speech. “I am so grateful to (thenFelician President) Sister Theresa Mary Martin for that opportunity.
I worked hard to make sure the program was run for the benefit of the
student-athletes. It’s great to see the legacy live on.
He was also responsible for naming the program the Golden Falcons.
“We took a student survey, and Falcons came out as the winner. I added
32
“Russell was all about the students; he wanted to help the students,
especially those who were struggling or from a more disadvantaged
background,” said Mrs. Wiebe. Russell’s impact was evident by the large
attendance at his funeral services in 2009. “Having Russell inducted
into the first Hall of Fame is truly a honor to us and also to him, as this
shows that what he did for the program really lives on. Things just don’t
end when a person passes; they keep going on in memory.”
Lynn Wiebe accepted the award for husband Russel Wiebe, who was
inducted posthumously. Pictured from left are Dr. Sherida Yoder; Felician
College President Dr. Anne Prisco; Dr. Alfredo Castro; Lynn Wiebe and
daughter Ava Wiebe.

Sports
Wiebe served 12 years over two stints as a Felician assistant men’s
basketball coach, working under five different head coaches. At the
time of his passing, he was also the academic advisor for the athletics department. As a professor of English at Felician, he served on the
initial athletics exploratory committee before becoming the school’s
first Faculty Athletics Representative.
“The Franciscan model for this year is ‘standing on the shoulders of
those who came before us.’ How appropriate that we’re here tonight
honoring these two individuals,” said Dr. Prisco. “Our goal for students
is to develop mind, body and spirit, and what better place to do that
than through sports.”
Dr. Prisco touted the diversity among the more than 150 Felician
student-athletes who currently participate in the program.
“We have students from across the country and from 13 different
countries. I always thought that was one of the wonderful powers of
athletics -- it really transcends language because when you get on that
field or on that court it really doesn’t matter if you don’t speak the same
language. There is a common bond,” she said.
Felician College Director of Athletics Ben DiNallo Jr. served as master
of ceremonies for the event. He acknowledged the growth and success
the program has achieved in its 17 years.
“We have 13 championships and have had All-Americans and Academic
All-Americans,” said DiNallo. “That’s pretty good for a program that’s
not even 20 years old.”
Dr. Prisco added: “As we move forward as an institution, athletics
continues to play such an important part of who we are. I look forward
to doing this every year.”
Felician College to Add
Three Sports to Athletics
Program
Felician College is adding three sports to its athletics program, college
officials announced.
New for the 2014-15 academic year will be women’s outdoor track,
women’s bowling and women’s lacrosse.
“We are adding these three sports for the continued growth of our
athletic department,” said Ben DiNallo Jr., Felician College Athletic
Director. “We’ve identified these particular sports as those that are
continually growing in popularity among women athletes. Also, two
of the three – lacrosse and outdoor track – are currently conference
championship sports so we will have immediate post-season opportunities because of our membership in the Central Athletic Collegiate
Conference.”
These additions bring Felician’s NCAA Division II varsity intercollegiate offerings to 13 sports, five for men and eight for women.
Student Athletes Excel
in the Classroom
Felician College students are showing their excellence on the field of
play as well as in the classroom. Sixteen Felician student athletes have
been named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Fall 2013
All-Academic Team, the CACC recently announced.
Senior Alysia Arcona and the women’s soccer team highlighted the
Felician list. Arcona, a two-time Capital One Academic All-American
in women’s soccer, earned her third CACC All-Academic Award, the
maximum possible in one sport. Her team claimed 11 honorees, breaking its own school record (set last year with nine) for one sport in one
year. The 16 overall winners match the number Felician sported in Fall
2012.
The academic requirement for inclusion to the CACC All-Academic
Team is a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher. In all, 184
student-athletes from the CACC’s 14 member schools were honored
this fall. Felician’s recipients are listed below with their major course
of study.

Sports
On the field, the Golden Falcons (4-9-5, 3-4-5 CACC) were fit to be tied,
setting school records with nine matches decided in overtime and five
draws. Felician placed 11th on the conference table, ending a string of
five consecutive CACC playoff appearances.
Three different Golden Falcons -- goalkeepers Julia Sheridan and
Bjonda Ademi and defender Kristen Toropiw -- earned the inaugural
CACC Defensive Player of the Week award. Junior defender Christie
Calandrillo was elected to the Capital One Academic All-District team
for the second consecutive year.
Women’s Volleyball
Men’s Soccer
The 2013 men’s soccer team (4-11-2, 4-7-1 CACC) tied for 10th place in
the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, finishing the season with a
three-game unbeaten streak.
Junior transfer Rafa Coronel led Felician and tied for seventh in the
CACC with eight goals, including an overtime game-winner against
Philadelphia University on Oct. 26. Senior midfielder Azedine
Maazouzi tallied one goal and tied for eighth in the conference with
five assists.
Women’s Soccer
Senior forward Alysia Arcona became the first female in Felician history to be voted to the Capital One Academic All-America® team twice.
The honor capped a slew of awards for Arcona, who completed her
Golden Falcon career with 25 goals and 19 assists, both among the top
10 all-time at Felician.
In 2013, Arcona netted five goals and two assists, and led the CACC
with 69 shots. She was named the CACC September Student-Athlete of
the Month, an honor which combines athletics, academics and citizenship. Postseason, she was presented her third All-CACC award, and is
in line for her third academic all-conference award as well.
34
The 2013 women’s volleyball team qualified for the Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference playoffs for the first time in six years. Felician
(6-19, 6-13 CACC) captured the No. 4 seed from the CACC North Division. The Golden Falcons succumbed, 3-0, to CACC South No. 1 seed
Wilmington (Del.) University in the conference quarterfinals.
Sports
Five-foot-11 outside hitter Olivia Emerson enjoyed a breakout
sophomore campaign. She became the first player in the 10-year history of the program to win the CACC Player of the Week award twice,
and the second Golden Falcon to ever be named all-conference. She
concluded her season with a spot on the CACC All-Tournament Team.
She finished second in the league with 3.70 kills per set, and her attack
percentage of .208 was a point shy of the Felician single-season record.
On Sept. 25, Emerson set a school record with 29 kills in a five-set road
victory over Concordia (N.Y.) College.
Felician bade goodbye to only one senior, middle blocker Alexa Scrivanich. She will graduate as Felician’s third all-time leading blocker and
No. 6 in career kills.
Men’s Cross Country
The 2013 men’s cross-country team had a strong top three runners, but
lacked the needed depth to make a serious run at its 10th Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference crown.
True freshman Mike Secreti began the season on fire. In just his second
career meet, he won the non-Division I side of the NJIT Invitational at
Branch Brook Park in Newark, besting a field of 44 entrants with a time
of 26 minutes, 12 seconds, for 8,000 meters. He was Felician’s frontrunner for four of the five regular-season races, and was named the CACC
Rookie of the Week on all five occasions.
Meanwhile, junior Keenan Huggins-Filozof was slowly building back
into top form after sitting out the second half of 2012 with an injury.
Huggins-Filozof’s work was rewarded at the CACC Championship
meet on Oct. 27 in Philadelphia, when he was the only Golden Falcon
to earn 2013 all-conference honors. Felician finished third as a team in
the race, the first time since 2009 it was not in the top two.
Sophomore Tom Cooke enjoyed a steady, consistent season. He was
Felician’s top runner (and third overall) at the Technology Challenge,
hosted by NJIT on Oct. 5. He crossed the finish line first for the Golden
Falcons again at the season-ending NCAA Division II East Regional in
Boston on Nov. 10, clocking a 34:00 for 10,000 meters. Felician placed
17th out of 28 at the regional.
Cooke was the Golden Falcons’ No. 2 man in all of the team’s other
five events.
Women’s Cross Country
A pair of freshmen has infused life into the women’s cross-country
squad. Led by newcomers Sabrina Roldan and Kate Rohsler, Felician
finished third at the 2013 CACC Championship. It was the best team
result for the Golden Falcons since 2008, when they were also third.
Roldan became the first Felician female runner in three years to make
the all-conference team. She ran 21 minutes flat for 5,000 meters to
place 12th out of 86 entrants in the CACC race. Two meets earlier,
Roldan set the school 5K record with a 19:18 at Branch Brook Park in
Newark during the NJIT Technology Challenge.
35
Sports
During the regular season, Roldan was named the CACC Rookie of the
Week twice, and Rohsler also captured the honor. Rohsler was Felician’s frontrunner at the Monmouth Invitational on Sept. 21.
Estrada created Futbol es Vida (“Soccer is Life”) in Guatemala during
the summer of 2013. The project offers free soccer clinics to the youth
of low income areas.
The improvement of junior Andrea Sarracino and the consistency of
juniors Sylvia Bialy and Lianne Rossi were also key components to the
Golden Falcons’ success. The team loses no seniors to graduation.
The program, however, started unofficially five years ago, when Estrada teamed up with his father to donate medals and t-shirts from his
business, La Academia de Futbol, to the town he was raised in.
In 2012, Bryon Estrada Sr. put his son in contact with the mayor and
sports director of the town of San Lucas Sacatepéquez, which is located
25 kilometers away from the capital city of Guatemala City.
With this discussion, Estrada wanted to help out the children of this
area, which has been negatively impacted by crime.
“Guatemala has been affected as a country by the increasing violence
and drug cartels,” said Estrada. “In the last decade, we have seen an
alarming increase of youth involvement in drugs, extortion, criminal
behavior, and also school drop outs.”
Through this project, the mission set forth by the mayor and Estrada
was to reach out to the youth of these low-income areas, hoping to get
them closer to sports and keep them away from the drugs and violence
that has become an everyday routine in this country.
Men’s Golf
The men’s golf team saved its best for last in the fall portion of the 201314 season.
At Chestnut Hill College’s Griffin Invitational in Telford, Pa., Felician
placed fourth out of 12 schools in attendance, shooting a team score of
344. The Golden Falcons put all four scorers among the top half of the
59 entrants, led by an 83 from Andrew Geesey and Jordan Tackett’s 85.
Felician played in five tournaments, comprising eight 18-hole rounds,
in the fall. Geesey leads the team with a scoring average of 78.0, and enters the spring with a legitimate chance of being just the second player
in program history to qualify for NCAA regionals. Freshman Justin
Rasmus is averaging 84.9. Tackett, who was recruited for baseball and
has not played competitive golf since high school, is third on the team
at 86.5
The Golden Falcons begin the spring half of their season with a dual
match at Wilmington (Del.) University on March 15.
Felician Coach Creates
Soccer Charity
Felician College assistant women’s soccer coach Bryon Estrada of
Rockaway has taken his love for the game of soccer to a whole new
level. The sport has taken him back to his native country for his Futbol
es Vida project.
36
“Through this project, we want to inculcate self-worth, dependability,
discipline, commitment, tolerance, and the feeling of being able to
achieve goals in these children,” Estrada added.
The first International Clinics of this project took place on August 3-4,
with 141 children from the ages of 7-16 participating. Children traveled
from all over Guatemala to take part in the program.
“I met a kid who was 11 that walked three and a half hours to come to
our clinic, being that he lived in an area where cars can’t go through due
to very poor road conditions,” said Estrada. “He was up at 4 a.m. to be
able to make it to the 8 a.m. clinic.”
For the event, 48 uniforms, 50 t-shirts, 150 used soccer balls, soccer
cleats, socks, shorts, trophies, and medal were all donated through the
program, and all camps and clinics are free of charge.
“This is a way for me to give back to my country and to the sport I love,
being that soccer has given me a lot in my life,” Estrada said.
As a child in Guatemala, Estrada played on the junior national team.
In addition to his current work at Felician, he coaches at the club level
for the West Morris Soccer Club. But he has one eye on future plans for
Futbol Es Vida.
He plans to travel back to Guatemala in November and December. In
the meantime, he is hopeful of organizing a charity soccer game to collect more donations to help with the project.
“This has been such a great and rewarding experience, and I am
blessed for the opportunity to do this,” he said.
