The LSU Health Sciences Foundation
in Shreveport
Established in 1997, the LSU Health Sciences Foundation is a public, non-profit entity. The sole mission of the Foundation
is to support, enhance and assist the LSU Health Sciences Center at Shreveport in its many endeavors. The Foundation
works diligently to expand awareness of the Health Sciences Center’s contributions to medical research, higher education
and quality healthcare. The Foundation also develops and enhances financial support for the institution and provides the
means through which financial support is received and administered.
Although this is our official mission statement, our intent is so much more. The LSU Health Sciences Center at Shreveport
is truly a part of this community-whether working, learning, teaching, treating, or receiving treatment, thousands of
community members come to LSUHSCS for a future. It is our intent, as the LSU Health Sciences Foundation, to support
that future.

The LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport is a tremendous resource for persons across Northwest Louisiana and
beyond, fulfilling critical regional needs through providing expert healthcare services, educating future healthcare
professionals, and conducting research that will advance healthcare for generations to come.
The Health Sciences Center’s impact is wide-reaching. With three hospitals, including the services of our acclaimed
Trauma Center and Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, our organization meets the medical needs of a special population—the
underserved—and the specialty needs of our state’s entire population. Today, our medical and support staff care for literally
thousands of patients, including 21,000 inpatient admissions and 450,000 outpatient visits yearly. We are helping our communities get ready for tomorrow’s needs as well. In our hospitals and three professional schools,
we train some 500 physicians and graduate 100 new doctors annually. Over 400 students are studying in the Allied Health
Professions and Graduate Schools. Biomedical knowledge is expanded through research studies being conducted by faculty
across a number of different areas. As impressive as all of this is, we could not continue our services without the support of
our community.

Chancellor, LSUHSC-S
In 2010, the LSU Health Sciences Center and the LSU Health Sciences Foundation partnered to complete many of these
accomplishments. Together, we recruited accomplished leaders for the Departments of Orthopaedics and Anatomy. We
have strengthened the Trauma Center by recruiting experts in musculoskeletal injury. We have honored our commitment to
preventive healthcare by making our campus a smoke-free neighborhood. We have improved key facilities that support an
array of critical patient care, educational and research functions
In the coming year, the LSU Health Sciences Center and LSU Health Sciences Foundation pledge to continue our work
together. By improving the Health Sciences Center, we are helping Louisiana communities for generations to come. With
your support, we can accomplish so much more. Thank you.

Building the
FUTURE
The LSU Health Sciences
Center—Shreveport does
more than treat patients. It
helps build the community’s
future. Currently, there are
over 800 students enrolled
across the Schools of
Medicine, Graduate Studies,
and Allied Health Professions. Those students will go on
to become the talented
physicians, scientists and allied
health caregivers who will help
improve your life and the lives
of loved ones.
Without the LSU Health
Sciences Center, many of
the community’s aspiring
healthcare professionals would
have to go elsewhere for their
education. In keeping them
here, LSUHSC-S improves
today’s healthcare, ensures a
healthy future for this area
and helps keep a community

the children just to have fun. Since
Camp Tiger began in 2000, any child
with a developmental disability who
can be in Shreveport for the five days
of camp is eligible for the chance to
do just that.
Camp Tiger is a divide-and-conquer
effort by the first-year medical class. Along with the help of faculty advisor
Dr. David DeSha and staff advisor
Michelle Basco, the students begin
planning for the camp by electing a
Community Service Chairman from
the class who serves as Camp Tiger
Director. The students then form
committees within the class to tackle
activities, food and transportation.
Stephanie Mead, Director of Camp

medical student at LSUHSC-S. She
has worked with children and adults
with developmental disabilities all her
life, so she was delighted to accept the
challenge when she was elected by her

Matthew Wallace is a repeat camper. His mother,
Leesa Wallace, says that Camp Tiger has made his
visits to the hospital much easier. “He’s had several
complicated surgeries and he was really scared,”
she says. “But it’s comforting to him because he

In 2010, Camp Tiger was able to accept all 50
campers who applied to participate thanks to
the number of students who volunteered to be

OUR COMMUNITY, OUR FUTURE
Hope for the Future:
Medical student Colleen Sicard looks forward
to the day when she can do more.
HOPE
Born in Pensacola, Florida, Colleen is
a transplant to the Pelican State, but
as she works to complete her medical
degree at LSUHSC-S, she knows she’s home.
“Louisiana has such an awesome
culture. I love the people, I love
the food, I love LSU and the Saints. I love everything about it,” says
Colleen. “I’d like to raise my family
in Louisiana, in the same culture that
I grew up in. I love it.”
Specifically, Colleen would like to stay
in Shreveport. She and her husband,
a fellow fourth-year medical student
intending to become a surgeon,
admit that LSUHSC-S is their first
choice for residency training following
graduation from medical school. They
like the programs here in surgery and
pediatrics—Colleen’s choice. The couple’s choice to study in
Shreveport was deliberate. “We liked
the Medical School at LSUHSC-S,”
Colleen explains. “It’s different than
other places. It’s a systems-based
program. That means that while
you’re learning the physiology of
the musculoskeletal system in the
classroom, you’re back in the lab
learning the anatomy for that at the
same time. Other places, they do
anatomy and then physiology.”
Not only does the community stand
to gain outstanding physicians like
Colleen and her husband, but medical
students often start to give back
before they even earn their medical
degrees. While most students with a
pediatric bent participate in programs
hosted by LSUHSC-S, Colleen takes
volunteerism a step further.
“The biggest thing I’m doing right
now is St. Luke’s Medical Ministry
through St. Luke’s Episcopal Church,
which serves Shreveport, Mansfield
and Minden. It’s an RV set up like
a clinic, so there’s a triage area, a
waiting area, and in the back there’s
a clinic room. We do free blood
pressure and blood glucose checks.
If we have a physician who can write
prescriptions, for blood pressure
medicines or diabetes, for instance,
we’ll fill their prescriptions and bring
them back to the Hope House for
the patients to pick up. We enroll
patients for different pharmacy
programs so they can get free
prescriptions,” Colleen says. “A lot
of these people can’t afford a primary
care physician, or they just don’t
know how to get in to see one.”
math have always inspired her to
help others by becoming a doctor,
programs like Medical Mission
for the Homeless provide her with
opportunities to serve the community.
As Colleen continues to volunteer
and study at LSUHSC-S, she looks
forward to the day when she can do
more. When asked about her mission
as a future healthcare professional,
Colleen says it is simply “to do the
best that I can for my patients. To be
smart about the decisions that I make
to help them get better. Just use my
head and my heart and try to do that. It’s really fun to be with the kids. I
want to see them grow up into the
people they’re going to become. And
I want to be a part of that, help them
through, advise them, become their
friend and confidante, and help them
to become good people.”
Colleen Sicard, fourth-year medical
student at LSUHSC-S, works hard to
become a physician so that she can
serve others.
Whether the patients are homeless or
just can’t afford to go to the doctor,
Colleen and her co-volunteers do
their best to provide the primary
care that will prevent serious illnesses
forcing patients to the emergency
room. For Colleen, whose religious

Home Again:
Dr. Wanda Wells is happy to be part
of the place where she grew up.
Dr. Wanda Henderson Wells
experienced a comfortable childhood
in Shreveport. The daughter of
Louisiana natives, Wanda danced
with the Shreveport Metropolitan
Ballet, attended Caddo Magnet High
School where she was involved with
Student Council, and attended Zion
Baptist Church, where her father still
serves as deacon. But she had ambition—since the
second grade, when Wanda had
learned about Eli Whitney’s historychanging invention, the cotton gin,
she’s had big plans.
“I told my parents when I came home
from school that day that I wanted to
do something to change the world,
just like Eli Whitney did. I wanted
to go to Yale, because that’s where he
went, and I wanted to be a doctor,”
Dr. Wells remembers. “I figured

other staff here, really convinced
me to come back home,” says Dr.
Wells. “I did my pediatric residency
here. My daughter, Kennedy Simon
Wells, was born during my third year
of residency. I stayed on staff at that
point. It really fit for me to stay here. I’ve been here ever since.”
When asked what keeps her in
Shreveport, Dr. Wells is quick to
cite her family. Both she and her
husband, Dr. Eric D. Thomas,
Assistant Program Director of the
LSUHSC-S Internal Medicine/
Pediatric combined department,
grew up in Shreveport, and both of
them enjoy being near their families. However, Dr. Wells goes on to credit
LSUHSC-S with the opportunities
the institution has provided her.
When she turned eighteen, Wanda
was accepted to Yale and majored in
biology. Determined never to come
back to Shreveport, she attended
medical school at the LSU Health
Sciences Center in New Orleans. But
when she was a fourth-year medical
student, she returned to Shreveport
for a month-long acting internship.
“I love the people I work with,” she
says with enthusiasm. “LSU is like
its own little world. I have a good
working relationship with the people
here. Our pediatric department is
great. Dr. Broussard is the other
hospitalist on the floor, and we really
work well together. Dr. Bocchini,
our Chairman, is a really good person
to work with. Everybody in the
department, we’re just one family; we
help each other out.”

Discovering the
FUTURE
LSUHSC-S is constantly on
the edge of new discoveries. Researchers, physicians, and
other healthcare faculty and
staff explore possibilities, both
those that will impact the
future and those that improve
healthcare in the present. In
FY 2010, LSUHSC-S received
and utilized over $20 million
in research grants. These
funds not only aided in the
search for disease causes and
cures, but were also invested
right here in this community. Further, LSUHSC-S attracts
researchers and physicians
from all over the country, as
well as bringing back home
those who got their start in
Louisiana.
From the labs to the clinics,
members of the LSUHSC-S
family are working tirelessly
to find the cures, solve the

Goeders is a Shreveport native, a
graduate of the former Jesuit High
School, LSU Shreveport, and the LSU
Health Sciences Center at Shreveport
School of Graduate Studies, he
headed to The Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine to
complete a postdoctoral fellowship in
the Department of Neuroscience. If
not for family and love of the area, he may have remained there or gone
on to any number of prestigious
research institutions.
Dr. Nicholas E. Goeders works tirelessly to find the answer
to addiction.
While the LSU Health Sciences
Center at Shreveport has state-ofthe-art facilities, it is the people
working in those facilities that make
the breakthroughs. Nicholas E.
Goeders, Ph.D., Professor and Head
of the Department of Pharmacology,
Toxicology & Neuroscience, is one
of those people. Working in the
labs of LSUHSC-S, Dr. Goeders
has recently received a $3.9 million
grant from the National Institute on
Drug Abuse (NIDA) to continue his
research on the connection between
stress and addiction. It is the largest
individual research project grant that
LSUHSC-S has ever received.
“We’re hoping to develop a new
treatment for addiction, not just for
cocaine, but for smoking, alcohol,
and other types of addiction related
to stress,” Dr. Goeders explains. “Everyone has an uncle who drinks
too much, or knows someone who
wants to quit smoking.”
The grant, awarded by a competitive
application process through NIDA
by the National Institutes of Health
(NIH), is based on work done
entirely here at LSUHSC-S. “You

But Dr. Goeders chose to come
back to Shreveport. “My family
was here, and I just love this part
of the country,” he says. “When I
came back in 1985, I knew there
was a commitment to research at
this institution. I knew research at
this facility was going to flourish, so
I knew I could do as well with my
career here as I could anywhere else.”
Since returning, Dr. Goeders and his
wife Linda have become very involved
in the community. Through their
volunteering efforts with Providence

who are victims of abuse, which
is often a result of drug addiction. Through the Freemasons, Dr.

all been worthwhile. Hopefully a lot
of people can be helped, but if one
person can no longer be addicted to
cigarettes or cocaine or alcohol, then
it’s been worth it.”
Dr. Horacio D’Agostino uses
cutting edge technology like
the NanoKnife in procedures
at LSUHSC-S.
One such physician is Dr. Horacio D’Agostino, FACS, FICS, Professor and Head of the
Department of Radiology at the LSU Health Sciences Center. A native of Argentina, Dr.
D’Agostino came to LSUHSC-S in 1999. Attracted by the multitude of opportunities to
serve, he wasted no time in building up the academic department of radiology.
Today, Dr. D’Agostino uses such advanced technology as the NanoKnife, a device that
generates short electrical impulses that kill tumor cells when needle-like electrodes are
inserted within tumors. These short electrical impulses cause very small pores (measured
in nanometers) in the cell membrane, allowing the content inside the cell to leak out,
resulting in cell death. The best part about using the NanoKnife is that, unlike other
tumor ablation methods, or methods of killing tumor cells, this technique leaves
surrounding vascular structures undamaged.
LSUHSC-S is one of only 14 institutions in the United States that was selected by the
manufacturer to receive a NanoKnife, because the Health Sciences Center had the necessary
personnel—trained and experienced interventionists in different tumor ablation methods. The use of the NanoKnife is just one way in which technology and people come together
at the LSU Health Sciences Center to improve health care in this community. To
learn more about supporting the acquisition of advanced technology and equipment at

Home Away from Home:
Dr. Cherie-Ann Nathan finds the perfect
balance in Louisiana.
Dr. Cherie-Ann
Nathan and
research technician
Tara Moore-Medlin
conduct research
in the labs of
LSUHSC-S.
Sometimes the people most at home
in this community are those who
weren’t born here at all.
Dr. Cherie-Ann Nathan, MD,
FACS, Professor and Vice-Chairman
of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck
Surgery at LSUHSC-S and Director
of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology
at the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center,
lives in Shreveport. “We just felt
like this was home,” she says of the
decision she and her husband made to stay here.
When Dr. Nathan started her medical
career, she had no idea that she would
end up in Shreveport, Louisiana. Born in Bombay, India, she was
influenced from a very young age by a
family friend, Dr. Borges, the director
of the Tata Institute, a major cancer
institution in India. “I idolized
him because he was an outstanding
surgeon who treated all patients, rich
and poor, the same,” Dr. Nathan
recalls, “He eschewed private practice
and when he treated the wealthy,
he didn’t ask a specific fee, but said
whatever they gave him would go to
treat the poor. He inspired me to
become an academic cancer surgeon.”
After six months of her residency in
India, Dr. Nathan says “I thought
‘we’re not doing something right.’ I
was very frustrated with the high

Searching for Answers
In the quest to overcome head and neck cancers, Dr. Cherie-Ann Nathan and her
research team target two things:
Preventing Recurrence
In spite of multi-hour surgeries in which surgeons remove the tumor and reconstruct
the surrounding areas, many patients suffering from head and neck cancer experience a
recurrence of the cancer at the surgical site and in the lymph nodes. Dr. Nathan collaborated with other faculty members at LSUHSC-S to identify a particular
molecular marker that indicated a likelihood of recurrence. This particular genetic pathway
is a potential target for drugs—if this pathway could be inhibited, recurrence might be
prevented. LSUHSC-S and the University of Chicago have teamed up to conduct a
national Phase II trial sponsored by Novartis to treat patients with a drug targeting this
pathway in order to improve progression-free survival.
Preventing Progression
Often, patients who develop one kind of head and neck cancer develop a second kind,
because the entire lining of the aero-digestive tract has undergone pre-cancerous changes,
a process known as field-cancerization. In studying the progression of pre-cancer lesions
to cancer, Dr. Nathan and her colleagues have found that curcumin, a substance present
in curry powder, is a chemopreventive nutraceutical or a natural substance that has been
shown to prevent cancer.
Dr. Nathan has won a $342,410 two-year grant from the National Institutes of Health
(NCI) to fund this study, which will be conducted right here in Shreveport by her and her
research team, which includes Dr. Oleksandr Ekshyyan, Dr. Cheryl Clark, Xiaohua Rong,
Dr. Kunal Sonovane and Tara Moore-Medlin, with special thanks to collaborator and coinvestigator Dr. Fleurette Abreo.

patients. I decided to go to Johns

it was treated in the United States.”
However, Dr. Nathan found the
recurrence was just as high in the
U.S. “It’s the nature of the disease
and not how it’s treated,” she says. “That’s when I realized research was
important because there hadn’t been a
meaningful change in the survival rate
in the last few decades.” Her research ambitions led her to
do a residency at the University of
California at San Diego. Both she
and her husband, a pulmonologist,
successfully completed their training
there. They were, however, both
in the country on separate student
VISAS that had to be sponsored by
an underserved area. They searched
across the country, and the only city that could sponsor the two was Shreveport.
“We had just come here for a year,
really,” Dr. Nathan admits. “But in
that one year, we started to love this
city. Everyone at LSUHSC-S was so
collegial, and my research went very
well even in my first year here. At the
end of the year when it was time to
go back to San Diego where they were
holding my husband’s position, there
was a hiring freeze, so they didn’t have
an academic position for me. I told
my husband I would go into private
practice in San Diego, but he knew
how much I loved academics and
the excellent research program I had
started at LSU, so he said ‘let’s stay
one more year.’”
In that year, her husband began
practicing at Willis-Knighton
Hospital in Bossier, and Dr. Nathan
says, “We both realized that this
was a very special place to bring up
a family. It’s true about Southern
hospitality. We felt there was no place
like Shreveport; we had wonderful
co-workers, neighbors, good friends,
and we felt that we had reached a very
good balance between family and
professional life. Ever since then, this
has been our home,” says Dr. Nathan.
In spite of offers to take up academic
Chair positions at other prestigious
institutions around the country,
Dr. Nathan intends to stay at
LSUHSC-S—the institution that
brought her to Louisiana. She looks
forward to continuing the research for
which she has become so well-known. “What I like about this institution is
that I feel there’s a chance to make a
difference, because LSUHSC-S is still
growing,” she explains.
“I think it’s very important to know
that there’s great research being
conducted at LSUHSC-S by a
number of faculty here who have very
novel ideas,” Dr. Nathan concludes. “I would love for the community to
know that whatever they invest in the
medical community and the school
goes a long way towards making
a difference in patients’ lives. As
the population ages, preventative
medicine, which is the focus of our
research here, will improve health
while decreasing overall healthcare
costs.”
Dr. Cherie-Ann Nathan treats

development of LSUHSC, and in the development of my
personal career. As such, I felt it a duty and privilege to
begin a drive to fund a Chair in his honor,” said Dr. Robert
Jackson, a former LSUHSC-S faculty member who was
instrumental in establishing the Muslow Chair.
HOPE
The private donations of $60,000 for a professorship or
$600,000 for a chair were eligible for matching funds
of $40,000 and $400,000, respectively, to create an
endowment. The endowments exist in perpetuity; the
principal remains intact and only a portion of the annual
earnings is expended for the benefit of the institution.
“Dr. Levine has been my doctor and friend for 25 years,”
said Bernard Lobel, a Shreveport resident who supported
the Levine-Selber Professorship. “I was thrilled for him
when I learned he was receiving this well-deserved honor. The many qualities he possesses are too numerous to
mention. He’s a dedicated, caring and thorough doctor. I’ve had the good fortune of being attended by physicians
he’s trained. The role he plays in passing along his
knowledge and skills to future physicians is an invaluable
asset to the school and our community.”
For more information about establishing a chair or
professorship benefitting LSUHSC-S, or to find out about
existing endowment campaigns, please call the Foundation
at (318) 861-0855.
“It is our wish that through the professorship, this hope can be extended to others.”
Mrs. Kathy Robichaud, Foundation supporter
Foundation supporters give encouragement
during the 2010 Annual Appeal.
The LSU Health Sciences Center—Shreveport and its affiliated Foundation could not be more grateful for the community
support received each year. Knowing that our faculty, staff and students have so significantly impacted the lives of
Louisianans is all the motivation we need to continue fulfilling our mission.
Below are some of the comments received in response to the Foundation’s 2010 Annual Appeal. Raising over $160,000
in 2010, this appeal has been the Foundation’s most successful. The Foundation is proud to name these people among its
friends, and is thankful for their enthusiastic support.
Said another community member Kathy Robichaud, “As
a parting tribute, the family of Robert P. Robichaud, Col.
USAF, Retired. chose to support the Cherie-Ann Nathan,
MD Professorship. During his last illness he was attended
by yet another competent, compassionate physician, Dr.
Nathan, who treated him as a person, always giving him
and his family a ribbon of hope. It is our wish that through
the professorship, this hope can be extended to others.”
The Foundation and the LSUHSC-S are always grateful for
the generosity of those supporters of endowed chairs and
professorships. Their contributions will continue to benefit
LSUHSC-S year after year.
Honorees of the matched chair and professorships
pose at the matching ceremony. From L to R:
Aaron Selber, Jr.; Peggy Selber; Steven Levine, MD;
Cherie-Ann Nathan, MD; Ike Muslow, MD;
Robert A. Barish, MD, MBA, LSUHSC-S Chancellor.
A Few Kind Words:
“You saved Michael’s life,
and we will forever be
grateful for all you do. We
wish this could be more, but
we are honored to be able
to support you in this small
way. Thank you for your
extraordinary commitment
and dedication.”
Michael and Judy Williams,
The Steeple Man and his wife
“Several of my family
members have been
treated at LSUHSC in
Shreveport and we have
received great care and
great results. Thank you
for your professional
treatment and empathy.”
Rep. Charles Chaney
“Thank you for all that
you do to provide a more
beautiful future, for
future generations.”
Valeria Allen
“Thanks to the excellent
care I have received from
Dr. Gary Burton and
Dr. Benjamin Li, I am
in my 17th year of being
cancer free. Thank God
for LSU Medical Center.”
Juanita Edwards
“Your service to the community is outstanding and to the patients and their
well being, heart-warming.”
Dr. Joseph Carter

The LSU Health Sciences Foundation is unique among its kind, due in large part to the generosity of Carroll Feist. In 2005, Mr. Feist
passed away leaving a $34 million investable assets and a $35 million estate of real property to the LSU Health Sciences Foundation
dedicated to cancer research. The Feist Estate continues to make generous contributions to the Foundation as specified by Mr. Feist’s will.
This chart reflects the magnitude of his continued giving. In order to bridge the gap between individual giving and corporate or estate
giving, the Foundation plans to reach out to friends and supporters to further the mission of the Foundation and continue the legacy of
founders like Mr. Carroll M. Feist.
