Happy fall to all. I hope your summer was filled with plenty of
memorable sunny days. Recently, Mary Scott and I attended
an important seminar at our nation’s capital to support and
save the social programs that are essential to our served
individuals, the elderly and the disabled. Some of these
programs include Social Security and Medicaid. I would like
thank all who participated in our Action Alerts, which let your
representatives know how you feel about the new congressional
budget cut proposals. We still have work ahead of us as we
continue to try and keep those programs that provide daily
services to our loved ones on both national and state levels,
and we will continue to need your support.
To receive our Action Alerts, please email Mary Scott at
[email protected].

Our fundraising events have been a smashing success thanks
to your support and our marvelous development department
team. I also thank and applaud our super volunteers who are
an essential part of our existence. Keep an eye out for some
fantastic recreation, fundraising and informative events this
season.
It is with mixed emotions that I would like to announce the
retirement of Executive Director Mary Scott. After 28 years
of dedication and devotion, Mary will be leaving The Arc of
Monmouth. She has been a guiding light to me throughout
my time on the board. No words can describe the degree to
which she will be missed. Please join us as we say farewell
and give many thanks to Mary at our annual Winter Glow Ball
on November 13, 2015 (see page 3 for details).

By now I believe most readers of this newsletter know of my plans to retire at the
end of January 2016. I started at The Arc of Monmouth as the Assistant Executive
Director in October of 1987, and became Executive Director in 1999. It has been
my distinct honor and pleasure to have been connected with this wonderful
organization and the good work that it does for this period of time. I am very
proud of all that has been accomplished during these years.
What has occurred here at The Arc over the last 28 years? Some of the milestones
in the late 1990’s included the opening of the Farmingdale Group Home and the
Independent Living Program, and the opening of an Employment Services office at
the Freehold Raceway Mall, with afternoon respite also offered at the location.
The next decade saw the development of the Newman Springs Group Home, and
the start of self-directed services such as Great Expectations. We also started
to focus on getting technology into the hands of served persons, with a grant
to purchase computers and touch screens for use in several programs. We have
continued our technology plan with the introduction of iPads and instruction on
use of cell phones and tablets in recent years.
Since 2010, we have initiated the
college program known as Keep
Achieving (Kach) at Brookdale
Community College, and opened
the transition program called
the Achievement Zone, and a 16
person apartment program called
Wayside Oaks. We also spent
more than a year renovating the
Work Opportunity Center from
the severe damage it suffered in
Super Storm Sandy, and it now
Suzanne Liberi, Mary Scott, Kathy Mullery
looks better than ever. I applaud
all of the staff, volunteers and donors who have made it possible for The Arc of
Monmouth to keep growing and innovating throughout these decades. I especially
want to acknowledge the direct care employees who on a daily basis provide
support for the persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are
the reason for our existence.
I am hoping for more opportunity over the next few months to express my deep
appreciation to the volunteers and employees who have supported me throughout
my work at The Arc. I have been blessed with wonderful, committed Board Members
and an exceptional executive team who have each worked for the agency longer
than I have, Kathy Mullery and Suzanne Liberi. The Arc is also lucky to have strong
leaders in the various departments of the organization. Thank you for all that you
do. I count on your continued support as I move toward my retirement.

Masquerade Ball
Dani, who is featured in our new agency video, earns wages at our Long Branch Work
Opportunity Center (WOC). In August, we were thrilled to provide her with a job addressing
“Save the Date” postcards for The Anabel Foundation’s Masquerade Ball (October 24). A
portion of the proceeds from that event will benefit Dani and 1,400 other individuals with
I/DD, so this job is just the start of good things to come!
This event will honor Mollie Giamanco and remember the life of Joseph Giamanco, who have
been tremendous supporters of The Arc for over 25 years.

Wine Spectacular
On Thursday, May 28, The Arc of Monmouth’s 2015 Wine Spectacular raised over
$25,000 for Monmouth County residents with intellectual and developmental
disabilities. Hosted at Rocco and Vivian Ruggiero’s gorgeous Little Silver home, the
event was chaired by Phil & Arleen Fina, Peter & Fern Esposito, and Joseph & Anita
Roselle (pictured on cover).
The event featured wines from 90+ Cellars, courtesy of Shore Point Distributing
Company, as well as Bourbon from Buffalo Trace. Rumson Wine & Spirits provided
their staff of expert wine servers.
One of the most exciting parts of the evening was the exceptional menu, created by
Pazzo chefs Christina Vaz and Pedro Christian. We are grateful to Pazzo Restaurant of
Red Bank for completely donating all of the food for this event!
Very special thanks to lead “Champagne” sponsors JGS Insurance and Francine
Catanese, and “Sancerre” Sponsors: The Cantor Companies, JR Cruz, Phil and Arleen
Fina, Monmouth University and 2014 Event hosts Dennis and Mikey Palmeri.

In Spite of Thunderstorms, Golf Classic Breaks All Records
While our 2015 Golf Classic may be remembered as
a wet one, it was also a record breaking sell out! On
Monday, June 15, 124 golfers came to honor Warren
Diamond and enjoy top notch golf and food at Deal Golf
and Country Club.
President of American Self Storage Warren Diamond has
been a tremendous friend not only to The Arc, but to
countless charities throughout Monmouth County and
beyond.
As the beautiful weather quickly turned to rain, players
and volunteers made the best of it. Golfers were issued
rain-checks to return at their own convenience, and many stayed throughout the day to
support the silent and live auctions, and to help make a dent in Deal’s endless lobster bar.
In total, this event raised a record breaking $106,000 for people with I/DD, by far the
most successful golf outing in The Arc’s history. Very special thanks to Warren Diamond,
event chairs Joe Roselle and Jack Privetera, our entire Golf Committee, and event
partner, The Anabel Foundation.
Save the Date! The June 20, 2016 Golf Classic will honor Vincent Puma, and will be
our most exciting event to date. Golfers will have the option to play at either Deal
or Hollywood Country Club (choice preference will be given to sponsors and early
registrants). To get involved, please call (732) 493-1919 ext. 120.

Annual Meeting and Award Recap
On Tuesday, June 23, The Arc of Monmouth held its Annual
Meeting and paid special tribute to its 2015 award recipients.
The Community Media Excellence award was presented to two
key figures in The Arc’s 2015 Awareness Campaign: Tinton Falls
photographer Pat Paladino and Asbury Park’s James Gay of Most
Remarkable, who donated their services to produce high quality
photographs and videos that illustrate The Arc’s work.
2015 Award Recipients
The evening began with official membership business, an
overview of the agency’s accomplishments over the past twelve
months and a special tribute to retiring board member Rhona
Levy.
The Community Media Excellence award winners James Gay and
Pat Paladino with Director of Development Brett Colby.
Wendy’s of Englishtown was awarded Employer of the Year for
the job opportunities they provide to many individuals with
developmental disabilities. Accompanied by served individuals

and Mollie Giamanco of Red Bank were named Volunteers of
the Year, for their twenty-five years of service to The Arc’s
Winter Glow Ball, among other fundraising events.
Tony Largamocino accepts the Employer of the Year Award, helped by
employee and participant Shannan.
The Arc congratulates these deserving individuals and companies,
who are now placed into consideration for awards at the state
level.
Volunteers of the Year Francine Acquaviva and Mollie Giamanco with
Director of Development Brett Colby.
The Health Care Professionals of the Year was awarded to The
Arc’s Behavioral Services Team, who persevered through funding
cuts that eliminated a portion of the department. Barbara
Kulberg of Tinton Falls was named Educator of the Year for her
leadership of Kach (Keep Achieving at Brookdale), The Arc’s
three-year college program.
Exhibiting artist Tim Belding (center) and family.
The evening also featured the debut of a new awareness film
about The Arc, as well as the unveiling of an art exhibit by Tim
Belding. Mr. Belding, an artist with developmental disabilities,
has exhibited throughout the United States and resides in Brielle,
NJ.

Stakeholders Having Their Say: 2015 Survey Results
by Kathy Mullery
So far we have had a busy 2015! We collected information
and suggestions from stakeholders as a part of our annual
survey process, but that isn’t all; this is the year, again with
the help of stakeholders, we developed a new Strategic
Plan, which will guide the direction of our organization for
the next five years.
First, survey results: In May we heard from persons we
support, families, other professionals and staff and we
learned good information from the results.
We received 224 responses from people who receive direct
services and supports. In answer to the question about the
extent to which The Arc staff treats them with respect, 85%
said they were either highly satisfied or moderately satisfied.
Our goal in our FY 2015 Performance Measurement Plan was
that 85% would say that they were “highly satisfied” (i.e.,
staff “always” treats them with respect). One of The Arc’s
core values is respect; we want to commit to raising this
result next year.
We received 39 responses to our family survey: the majority
of the responders identified themselves as family members.
In rating satisfaction with The Arc’s services, 85% said that
The Arc of Monmouth did an “excellent” or “very good” job
in helping the individual reach their personal goals. This
result well exceeded the goal we had set of 80%.
We received another 49 surveys from families when we
sought their input for our long range planning. We know
from these family surveys and from feedback we received
during our spring “Community Conversations” series with
families that two services that family members said are
most important to them in the next five years are housing
and employment. We also heard of families’ support for
our Work Opportunity Center in Long Branch.
We had only a few responses to our professionals’ survey
but all responders rated programs as excellent or very good.
According to this group of respondents, a service that should
be expanded or developed in the future is better health care
for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Finally, in our staff survey, 72 staff responded. Staff offered
many suggestions for services and supports that they believe
are most needed, and this input, too, was helpful in our
long range planning.
Thank you to everyone who participated. The input we
received is very important to us so that as we plan for the
future, we can be confident we are working to meet our
mission of improving people’s lives.
New Strategic Plan Approved By Board
During the last year, The Arc of Monmouth sought input from people who receive services, family members, employees,
volunteers and others as we developed a Strategic Plan for the next five years. In August the Board of Directors approved
the new plan. The Arc of Monmouth President Joyce Quarles said, “The Strategic Plan focuses on four goals covering the
areas of advocacy, services and supports, fiscal strengths and public awareness and staffing and volunteers.”
Some of the objectives of the plan include:
• Continuing to advocate, along with partners such as The Arc of New Jersey, on issues of importance to
persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families.
• Developing new options for persons with I/DD that can be offered as part of the Division of Developmental
Disabilities’ Supports Program.
• Initiating Supports Coordination for persons in Ocean County.
(The Arc of Ocean County hopes to provide this service for Monmouth County families.)
• Expanding residential services, e.g., by adding a new apartment program or serving more persons in
Independent Living.
• Expanding in-home supports such as behavioral supports for children.
• Providing information and support for families in a variety of ways, including responses to inquiries,
provider fairs, website content and meetings.
• Establishing a planned giving program.
• Involving served persons in the process for hiring employees.
• Providing leadership-building opportunities for employees who may emerge as future leaders of The Arc.
The Strategic Plan also acknowledges that we are in a period of great change in the field of services for persons with
I/DD, and suggests that the organization will have to be nimble to make adjustments as those changes occur.
If you are interested in more detail on the Strategic Plan, please contact Mary Scott at [email protected].

Work Opportunity Center (WOC)
by Elaine Richardson
The WOC’s document destruction service was booming as the summer heated up.
WOC’s private business customer base has increased 100%, grown from three businesses
using our destruction service on a regular basis to six customers as of last fiscal year.
WOC has also increased our state agency customer base from two regular agencies
(DOL and Monmouth County Courts) to 5 agencies
(Office of The Aging, Lakewood Board of Education
and Ocean County Courts) currently using our
service. This gives WOC a 40% increase in state
customer base and a 140% increase in the total
service.
If you are in need of document destruction services, or are a corporation and would
like to donate your gently used industrial shredder to WOC, please contact Elaine
Richardson, Marketing & Sales Manager at (732) 229-4414 ext. 205 or by email at
[email protected].
Shout Outs
Exit 105 Gamers
In May, we were invited to participate in a weekly gathering of board game aficionados. In a desire to give back to the
community, the “Exit 105 Gamers” collected over $500 to help people with developmental disabilities. The group is
warm and welcoming – if you’d like to get involved, contact [email protected].
Vonage Volunteers
Special thanks to Vonage’s volunteer crew, who helped us clean out our Matawan
Thrift Shop as we prepare to close its doors. Another big thank you to all of the
shoppers and donors who supported this store for the past 40 years. We’ll miss
being in downtown Matawan!
Sherwin Williams
As mentioned on page 9, Sherwin Williams donated paint and labor to revitalize
The Arc Center. From selecting colors, to prepping, painting and cleanup, this
team did a fantastic job and we can’t thank them enough!
Jersey Coast Sport Fliers
The Arc of Monmouth would like to thank our friends at the Jersey Coast Sport Fliers for inviting us to the 3rd annual
National Model Aviation Day Open House. We were welcomed with so much interest and enthusiasm, and we received
many generous donations from club members and guests. It was great to learn more about the JCSF and watch amazing
flying demonstrations.
Adult Services
by Maggie Aders
The charming Eatontown Boutique, located at Eatontown Achievement
Center, hosted a summer sidewalk sale every Friday in August. All of the
items for sale were crafted by served individuals who attend the program,
with varying levels of staff assistance.
The boutique’s inventory included handpainted glassware, handcrafted
magnets, covered photograph albums, and felt cat toys with catnip. A new
specialty line featured some unique electronics accessories, including phone
and tablet cases. We had the opportunity to sell these goods at local crafters’
events as well.
We will continue to sell these one-of-a-kind crafts and gifts throughout the season.
The Eatontown Achievement Center is located at 20 Meridian Road, Eatontown, and is open between 8:30 a.m. and
3:30 p.m. Eatontown Boutique is located in the program’s front vestibule. Call 732-389-5256 with any questions.

United Way Employability Grant
The United Way has awarded The Arc of Monmouth a grant
to provide "soft skills" employment training to individuals
who are currently looking to obtain, regain or maintain
community-based employment. In March, a group of
individuals began gathering each week at the Freehold
Mall space that is now shared between Meridian Health, The
United Way of Monmouth County and The Arc of Monmouth.
Weekly meetings include discussion and training on soft
skills employment-related topics such as:
1. Managing feelings of anger, frustration and
stress
2. Conflict resolution in the workplace
3. Effective ways to communicate at work
4. Decision making and problem solving skills
5. Self-regulatory skills in the workplace
6. Understanding how to develop and maintain
professional interpersonal relationships
7. Time management and organizational skills
The above are all issues with which everyone who is
employed struggles at one point or another. However, it is
rare that these issues are actually addressed and discussed.
The goal of this project is to allow individuals to come to
a place where they can share, with a group, issues with
which they are struggling in order to gain support and
ideas from others that will assist them in feeling better
equipped to cope with difficult situations on the job and
in their personal lives.
We are successfully wrapping up our first full session with
three individuals who have successfully completed it. They
have said that this group has, “Helped me understand how
to control angry feelings when I am at work,” and, “The
program has helped me understand ways to ask for what
I need to make sure that my voice is heard at work.
We are looking forward to starting our next round of
groups in July.
A New Program at The Arc of Monmouth’s
Department of Employment Services
by Thea Strong
In February 2015, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS) approved our agency to provide the service
of Trial Work Experience (TWE).
Trial Work Experience will provide each participant a variety of experiences in work settings, allowing each individual
to be exposed to different job tasks and environments over a sufficient period of time in order to make an adequate
assessment of the individual’s interests and capabilities for future employment.
This program is not used for the purpose of employment but rather to determine if an individual is able to perform a
specific job or type of employment.
The Arc’s Employment Department has received our first referrals and the program has begun. An Employment Specialist
will assess and appraise each individual’s patterns of work behavior and the services needed for the person to perform
well in a work environment.
Upon completion of the participant’s TWE, DVRS will refer candidates for job development and intensive training services
in preparation for employment in the community.
The Arc of Monmouth is proud to have been selected to offer TWE, making a difference for those eager to be a part of
their community workforce with the appropriate supports in place.
Drop Off Center
by Sheila Maloney, Freehold Afternoon Drop Off Technician
A trip to the Monmouth Battlefield Museum was an educational and enjoyable way to beat
the summer heat.
Our participants in the Drop Off Center in Freehold had the chance to visit the park and
learn about the historic battles that took place in New Jersey, particularly Monmouth County,
during the Revolutionary War. We watched a thrilling movie about The Battle of Monmouth
during our tour, and ended the afternoon with a snack under the trees.
It was a wonderful place to visit, and we cannot wait for our next adventure around
Monmouth County.

Congratulations, Graduates!
by Allen Cohen
There are now eighteen Alumni of The Keep Achieving
(Kach) at Brookdale program.
Grant Sokol brought the festivities to a celebratory end by
having the graduates move their tassels.
Five members were added on May 21, 2015, when Daniel
Chasin, Julie Hoffman, Christopher McMullen, Grant Sokol
and Conor Wright completed the program.
There were so many other wonderful moments at this
celebration. Suzanne Liberi welcomed everyone on
behalf of The Arc of Monmouth. Linda Martin, Brookdale
Community College’s liaison to Kach, spoke about the
importance of programs like Kach in bringing full inclusion
to our served individuals. Barbara Kulberg awarded
the first and second year students their Certificates
of Participation and eloquently spoke about each one’s
strengths and growth throughout the past year. Of course,
no Kach celebration would be complete without our video
presentation. The video gave us the opportunity to hear
our students in their own words speak about how much
Kach means to them in making their dreams reality and
their self-confidence soar.
The End of Year/Graduation ceremony was a joyous occasion.
Julie Hoffman and Conor Wright led the packed house in
the Pledge of Allegiance. Danny Chasin followed by singing
the National Anthem. His performance brought the house
down. We’re so proud of you, Danny. A short while later,
Chris McMullen delivered an absolutely incredible speech
representing the class of 2015, and received a standing
ovation. Sarah Logan joined Allan Cohen in awarding the
graduates their Certificates of Completion. Ms. Logan warmly
spoke about how far each student has come since entering
Kach three years ago. She had each student introduce their
families. Without the support of families, the Keep Achieving
program would not have the level of success that it has.
See the video at www.arcofmonmouth.org/kach.
Kach will be introducing six new students in September
2015. Stay tuned!
Awareness Campaign
by Brett Colby
Visitors to The Arc Center may notice some exciting changes underway. In May, teams
from Sherwin Williams donated paint and labor to provide vibrant new wall colors in
our lobby, hallways and board room.
On these walls now hang large scale photographs depicting individuals served by The
Arc, in addition to creative works by artists with disabilities (see page 5). The impact
and response has tremendous, and these improvements have created a new sense
of warmth and community at The Arc Center.
Viewers of our website may notice some changes, too. Recently, we’ve launched two
videos: an “Agency Overview” that highlights everything The Arc has to offer, and
“Why Support The Arc”, which shows why The Arc needs families and community
members to get involved.
These videos and photos are the building blocks of our 2015 Awareness Campaign,
which was spearheaded by donations from talented photographer Pat Paladino and
videographer James Gay of Most Remarkable. A generous grant from TD Charitable
Foundation provided vital support to this project.
Pictured: Dani Zalepka is featured in The Arc’s new Agency Overview video.

Insuring the Future of The Arc
Have you ever considered the possibility of making a more significant donation to The Arc of Monmouth? For many
families and supporters this probably sounds impossible, but it may be easier than you think.
When we were young and concerned about an uncertain future, many of us bought life insurance as a hedge against a
situation that could devastate our young family. Life insurance was a tool that provided financial security for our loved
ones’ future.
As time passed and we built a ‘nest egg’, we find that the importance of that life insurance shrinks. The kids grow up
and become independent, we build a retirement plan and some of us may have invested in real estate and/or financial
investments that provide security for our remaining years. Even if we have a family member with a disability, many of
us created a special needs trust to ensure they are cared for without it affecting other financial needs that our families
have. Therefore, the life insurance policies that were paid for over many years can now serve as a great way to give a
gift of value that may not be needed by your family.
Please take a few moments to think about whether you too might be able to make a gift of a life insurance policy to The
Arc. It’s an easy gift to make; it simply requires adding a beneficiary or changing the ownership on an existing policy.
If the policy is already paid up, there would be no additional cost for making a very special gift that will benefit future
generations of people with disabilities and their families who will continue to be served by The Arc.
To discuss a gift of life insurance or another special gift, please contact Brett Colby at (732) 493-1919 ext. 120 or
[email protected].
