KenCrest Centers 2006 Annual Report
Fundraising: Venture Capital Yields New Opportunities
From the Executive Director
KenCrest has a history of investing private contributions in new supports and
services for the people of our mission. By treating our donations as a form of
venture capital, we assure our supporters that their gifts will be used in creative
ways oriented to a better future for those we support.
More than ever, those investments yield new opportunities for the 7,300 people
we serve. Some of the funds given from private sources have been used to make
capital improvements, like the fully accessible adaptive playground in West
Philadelphia. Another investment works to give youth on-the-job experiences
while expanding the network of potential employers for those we serve. Another
privately supported initiative is helping us open critical conversations with
federal and state legislators to help them understand that community-based life
is the most affordable and fulfilling alternative.
We are grateful for your investment in KenCrest’s new century of service. I am
certain that you will never regret your financial support of KenCrest. The return
on each dollar is priceless: new opportunities to bring greater ability to
thousands of lives.
William J. Nolan
Executive Director
“We are grateful for your
investment in KenCrest’s new
century of service.”
West Philadelphia Playground:
Joint Venture Capital Project Yields Priceless Outcomes
Watching children run, climb, swing,
sing, and chatter as they play, it’s easy to
see that at KenCrest, playgrounds are used
for more than playful romping. The
playground serve as a classroom to help
children with disabilities develop skills and
imagination.
“All the skills introduced in the
classroom are also applied on the new
playground. I see so many possibilities,”
says Deborah Carter, Program Coordinator
at the KenCrest West Philadelphia Center.
“Could there be an outdoor classroom with
art easels along the fence? Space for messy
science? Tools for building? Outdoor plays
with parents coming to watch? It’s
wonderful to have fulfilled one vision and
spark the imagination for others.”
The West Philadelphia Center, an
inclusive program serving children with
and without disabilities, had a large outdoor space but
no playground. Although staff carried out trikes and
balls at recess, without accessible, developmentally
appropriate slides, swings, and climbing structures
many of the children had few opportunities to enjoy a
variety of recreational activities. Especially the children
with disabilities.
With generous grants from the Nonprofit Finance
Fund of Philadelphia, the Davenport Family
Foundation, and St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ardmore,
KenCrest has a new fully-equipped playground where
the children can play, learn, and imagine all kinds of
new adventures.
“Nonprofit Finance Fund was pleased to award a
grant to KenCrest for the renovation of the playground
at their child care site in West Philadelphia,” says Joanne
Bursich, NFF Project Manager. “Having a safe, high
quality play area contributes to the overall quality of the
child care program and ensures that kids have a wide
range of activities from which to choose. KenCrest
helped us to meet our goal of building a healthier, better
managed child care sector in Southeastern
Pennsylvania.”
“We’ve seen an increase in the children’s motor skill
stimulation, language development, and socialization
skills for all age levels,” says Ms. Carter. “The
playground has sparked an excitement that goes beyond
equipment. Children are hanging bird feeders along the
fence and planting a garden. Their joy is priceless.”
“It’s wonderful to have fulfilled one vision
and spark the imagination for others.”

National Job Shadow Day: Citizens Bank Foundation Grant
Brightens the Future Employment Picture
For the past three
years, KenCrest has
helped teenagers
with intellectual
disabilities celebrate
Groundhog Day in a
unique way – by
shadowing mentors
at jobs they hope to
have someday. With
a grant from
Citizen’s Bank
Foundation,
KenCrest was one of
the first agencies to
support students
from high school
special education
classes in National
Job Shadow Day, a collaborative mentorship program of
America’s Promise, Junior Achievement, the U.S.
Department of Labor, and the U.S. Department of
Education.
“Economic development projects are at the heart of
Citizens’ charitable giving program,” says Deborah
Khan, vice president of Community Relations at
Citizens Bank. “KenCrest’s program initiatives fit within
Citizens Bank Foundation’s funding focus. We believe it
is really important to establish awareness of young
people with disabilities as important members of the
workforce.”
Participating in National Job Shadow Day is an
extension of KenCrest’s Transition-from-School-to-Work
program. Accessing their expanding network of local
businesses and universities, KenCrest supported 30
students from Hatboro-Horsham, Methacton,
Boyertown, Upper Merion, and Colonial school districts
in a variety of jobs. IKEA/Conshohocken, Clemens
Market/Trappe, and Delaware Valley College in
Doylestown welcomed students interested in learning
more about jobs in retail, child care, horticulture,
culinary arts, and animal care.
By working closely with the teens, their teachers, and
the employees at partnering job sites, KenCrest staff
diligently matche students with employee/mentors to
assure a good job-shadowing experience for everyone.
Our staff members provide additional assistance on
premises for students and their mentors.
“Job Shadow Day is all about opportunity and
helping kids to understand their interests and the day’s
experiences so they can make decisions about their
future employment,” says Rita Mandik, Director of
EmployNet, the KenCrest program that carried out this
project. “It’s also a very effective way for employers to
learn more about the competencies of youth with
disabilities. We very much appreciate Citizens Bank
Foundation’s financial support. It is essential to the
success of our on-going participation in this nationwide
event.”
Ms. Mandik hopes to expand next year’s National
Job Shadow Day into Philadelphia so that inner-city
employers and students with disabilities can learn from
one another.
“We believe it is really important to establish awareness
of young people with disabilities as important members
of the workforce.”

Public Policy Project:
River Crest Fund Grant Supports Back-Home Advocacy
KenCrest’s Public Policy Project Team
builds relationships with local, state, and federal
elected officials to broaden awareness of the
issues faced by families and agencies supporting
individuals with intellectual disabilities. Working
on a daily basis with many government agencies,
KenCrest’s voice is important in helping
legislators understand the back-home impact of
budget issues and human services legislation.
Coordination, information, training, and
materials for the Public Policy Project Team are
being funded by a grant from the River Crest
Fund.
“This River Crest Fund grant supports our
mission of advocacy and awareness-building
with elected officials that will allow us to serve more
people in KenCrest’s innovative community-based
programs,” says Jerry Beil, KenCrest Centers Board past
president and chair of the Public Policy Project Team.
Project Team members have made 12 visits to federal
elected officials in Washington, DC, who represent
communities served by KenCrest. The Project Team’s
plan is to make follow-up visits to the legislators’ backhome offices in our area, and to expand the visits to
state legislators as well.
One of the Washington visits was with
Congresswoman Allyson Y. Schwartz. Following that
visit, Karen Gurmankin, field representative for the
Congresswoman, contacted KenCrest and asked to visit
with residents of our Lansdale community home in her
district. “By coincidence, the visit was made on
KenCrest’s 101st anniversary. It was a wonderful way to
expand our Project Team’s efforts,” says Mr. Beil. “Ms.
Gurmankin saw first-hand how KenCrest’s services
support the residents in leading normal lives in their
own community in a very financially feasible program.”
The Project Team will be inviting more officials to visit
our program sites and meet the people we support.
Members of the Public Policy Project Team are
scheduling quarterly visits to legislators’ local offices.
There are 89 elected officials who represent the areas
KenCrest serves. The Team invites former KenCrest
Board members and friends of the agency to join them
in advocating for better community-based services for
all children, youth, and adults with developmental
disabilities.
“This River Crest grant…will allow us to serve more
people in KenCrest’s innovative community-based
programs.”
The Board of Directors of KenCrest Centers established

River Crest Fund
the River Crest Fund in 2002. They used
proceeds from the sale of the 152-acre tract
known as River Crest in Mont Clare, PA to
establish the Fund. Originally purchased in 1911
by Sister Maria Roeck’s Kensington
Dispensary, River Crest was “a place in the
sun” for children whose parents had
contracted tuberculosis. Grants from the River
Crest Fund support innovative services; provide
matching funds for projects eligible for
external funding; purchase technology to
improve services; and finance fundraising and
advocacy initiatives that enhance the image
and revenues of KenCrest. The River Crest
Fund is a perpetual source of inspiration and
support for KenCrest staff to continue the
agency’s tradition of creating new ways to
serve children, youth, and adults with
developmental disabilities.

Mission
Guiding Principles
Our mission is to initiate,
develop and maintain
quality programs that
result in greater visibility,
understanding,
acceptance, service and
support for individuals
who have or are at risk of
having mental retardation
or a developmental delay.
We believe that a positive supportive environment, based on the equitable
interchange between and among all people, offers the greatest
opportunity for the maximization of human potential.
We believe that our response to those in need is both a gift and a
mandate, which we carry out in affiliation with the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America.
We acknowledge that our present stewardship will be a link between
those who have served and been served in the past and those who are yet
to serve and be served tomorrow.
We recognize the value of risk in service to people, and seek to explore
new, improved ways to provide that service.
We believe that the barriers between and among people are creations of
human nature and will advocate for the needs of those we serve and for
the elimination of labels that separate humankind.
KenCrest Centers is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America and is a member of Lutheran Services in America.
