UNIVERSITY OF ALLAHABAD
The University of Allahabad, the fourth modern University established in India (after the Universities of Bombay, Calcutta and Madras), has a sound academic
tradition and several extra-ordinary achievements to its credit. University of Allahabad has given to the country, President, Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers,
Governors, Cabinet Ministers of Central & State Governments, a number of Cabinet Secretaries to Government of India and Civil Servants (ICS & IAS), in
addition to eminent scientists, literati, social scientists, educationists and leaders in the business world. The Alumni of the University have distinguished
themselves in all walks of life.
It began its career in 1887 as an affiliating and examining body for Graduate and Post-Graduate degrees, with a classical orientation in different branches of
learning and the responsibility for secondary education as well.
From 1904 it began organizing its own teaching Departments and instituted doctoral research programmes. In 1921, it was re-organized as a unitary teaching
and residential University and over the next few years it shed the burden of conducting secondary-level examinations and its affiliated Colleges were
transferred to the Agra University.
From 1951 it has, while maintaining its fundamental unitary character, recognized some local institutions as Associated Colleges, which are authorized to teach
undergraduate courses under the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Science and Law. During the past decades, the University earned national and international
recognition as a premier institution.
The University of Allahabad has been accorded the status of
“Institution of National Importance" and became a Central University
on 14th July 2005.
‘‘The AU Community, as a whole, has been
working with a conviction that quality
education is a birth right of all the students
and every effort will be made to ensure
quality in higher education at the University.”
