From the President
To all our SBA families and friends –
She was already a bit of a teaching legend when I first stepped on campus - and that
was eleven years ago.
Some kids told me she was the toughest, most un-bending, most demanding teacher
they had ever known. And as kids sometimes do, I’m not sure they meant it all that kindly
at the time. Others acknowledged her as one of those instructors who could and did open
up a view of the world they had never before seen. And all of them loved her – or they do
now. That’s often the way it is.
Ms. Joan Best retired this spring. After 39 years in the teaching profession, 22 of those
here at our school, she has decided to step aside. Her first years here were when we were
Auburndale School, with the opportunity to work for our founders, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley and
Mary Alice Smith. After that, she outlasted four more principals.
Later in this edition, you’ll find a moving tribute to her penned by one of her colleagues, Mary Lou Stauffer – it’s never
been just the students that she touched.
She gave so much of her life to all of our kids (one of mine, too.) But also, this is our Annual Recognition of Donors
issue, where you will see a listing of the many, many others who have through the past year given us gifts of a different
sort. And our school cannot and will not survive without all of these.
Auburndale School and now St. Benedict at Auburndale have always been blessed with people like Joan and people
like you – faculty, parents, grandparents, and dear friends – who have continually stepped up to share what they have
with our students.
How do we thank her … how do we thank you? No, not everyone can be a teacher. Nor does everyone have the sort
of wealth that can effect seismic change with a single stroke of their check-writing pens.
But I believe that’s what has long made us the phenomenal school that we are. We are so diverse in so many ways.
And everyone – regardless of their resources – continues to be willing to share.
Thank you! To an incredible lady whom we will miss dearly and to all of you for what you have shared with our
students. She and you have made us a better school.
George Valadie
President
SBA
From the Editor
As you most likely can tell, this issue of On Eagles Wings focuses on Joan Best, who is retiring after a teaching career of
39 years. I took editorial license to scan a variety of photos of Joan from both Auburndale and SBA yearbooks spanning the
years to give us a glimpse of the many faces of Ms. Best, as her students remember her.
Please see an article by Joan’s good friend Mary Lou Stauffer about her and bidding her fond farewell from all of us at
SBA. As Mary Lou so artfully expresses in her tribute, Joan wore many hats at Auburndale and SBA. In addition to the ones
that Mary Lou mentions, Joan was also sponsor of several organizations, the yearbook and student newspaper, honor
societies and served as tennis coach. Following Mary Lou’s message, you find several messages from former Auburndale
and SBA students.
I am taking the opportunity here, not as a co-worker, but a parent of three SBA graduates to express the Masterson
family’s appreciation for Joan’s dedication to the proud teaching profession and for taking to heart her God-given mission
as a teacher. All three of my children were fortunate to have Joan as their freshman English teacher. What a foundation
she set for them as she truly prepared them for the remainder of high school, their college careers
and now as productive citizens. All three have used what she so adeptly imparted, class lessons as
well as life lessons. Two of them are now teachers and the other has had articles published.
When speaking to Joan, recently, about her teaching career, she said, “It’s been wonderful.
Very few people get to do what they like to do.” Joan likes to teach! In one of the yearbooks, a
description of Joan said, “St. Joan, as she is sometimes called, has endless enthusiasm that turns
dreary Mondays into spectacular learning frenzies.” And, this was from the students.
We all cherish what Joan has given to us personally and to the profession as a whole. Our final
request, Joan, don’t forget to bring us a bit of cake from your annual Bastille Day celebration.
God’s blessings, always!

SBA Board of Advisors Completes Second Year
By Michael D. Allen, Chair
I remember the call distinctly.
“….we’re putting this new Board together…..” “….I need someone to Chair it….” “….your name came
up….”
I said “yes” because it is hard for me to say “no” - except to my kids.
Now, two years into it, we are formed, functional (most of the time) and quite unlike most school
boards that you may be familiar with. Our role is, as the name implies “advisory”. We are hopefully a
good sounding board for Mr. Valadie, the occasional provider of a new idea or different perspective and
when necessary - we run a little interference or provide a bit of “cover” all in SBA’s best interest.
Areas our Board remains focused on include:
• Keeping our technology resources current for students and faculty
• Developing a long term financial plan to reduce our debt, increase our tuition assistance endowment and fund future capital
and maintenance needs
• Ongoing development of a Building & Grounds capital needs plan
• Soliciting input from parents, students, alumni and the community at large
With the close of the school year, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Buzzy Barnett, Jeff Bogue (current Secretary) and Eric
Mathews who will be rotating off the Board as their terms have expired. I am also very happy to let you know that Mike Waddell
has been elected the Board Chair for the next school year and he will be assisted by Don Williams as Vice Chair and Mindy
Costible as Secretary.
Wishing you a continued safe, relaxing summer.

News From Home & School Association
Our Home & School Association had a very successful
year. All our events were very well attended and parents and
students were very appreciative. We would like to thank our
committee chairs and volunteer parents who gave so much of
their time to make it all possible. A special thank you to Joyce
McCue for her two years as Co-President. Joyce has moved to
Virginia and she and her family will be truly missed. Shannon
Schuhlein will be Co-President for the year 2010-11. We are
very pleased she has agreed to step in.
We will need parent volunteers for next year and help at
registration. If you are interested, please contact Barbara
Hervey at [email protected] or 674-1658. It will only take a
couple hours and it is a good opportunity to meet a lot of new
parents.
Make sure you watch Monday Mail for information about
meetings, upcoming events and volunteer opportunities for
2010-2011. We look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks, again, for a great 2009-10. See you in August!

The 2010 Project Graduation was a huge success, with the
graduates enjoying a fun event all through the night capped
off by collecting their prizes and “goody bags” full of great stuff
for college. Senior Parents, be sure to be on the look out for
information on Project Graduation for the class of 2011. The
support fundraisers – Trivia Nights are set (see calendar in this
issue). PG is a fun event for the graduates, but for all involved,
too. Volunteers and ideas are needed. Chairs for this year’s
event are Sissy Aeschliman and Chuck Kantor. They will be

About Our Faith
About Our Faith Reflection
By John Phillips, SBA Theology Teacher
As I entered my first year as a Theology
teacher at St. Benedict at Auburndale
last fall, I was looking forward to many
interesting events. I attended Catholic
schools for twelve years, and most of my
career has been spent in the Catholic
school system. So I really wasn’t expecting
much in the form of surprises. But little did I
know that I would be presented with a surprise in October.
One of my freshman students, Brittney Beckham, approached
me one day after class and asked me if I would be her sponsor
for the Sacrament of Confirmation as she entered the Catholic
faith. This was a first for me. Of course, I said yes. I was honored
and felt blessed that a student would consider me for such an
important role in her life.
I was confirmed in my Catholic elementary school, and since
my entire family is Catholic, I really have never known or have
been associated with someone converting to Catholicism. The
process was enjoyable and enlightening, as was the ceremony at
the Easter Vigil at St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
Signed with the gift of the Spirit in Confirmation, Christians
more perfectly become the image of their Lord and are filled
with the Holy Spirit to help overcome the tendency to sin
(concupiscence) that remains after Baptism. They bear witness
to him before all the world and eagerly work for the building
up of the Body of Christ. This is living out the mission entrusted
to us by Christ and expressed preeminently in the Eucharistic
liturgy. It is a wonderful Sacrament of Initiation that sometimes is
even often misunderstood by members of the Catholic Church.
I am happy that Brittney chose me to be her sponsor. But
I am even happier that she has been called to Catholicism to
renew her faith in God. The term catholic means “universal.” The
student body at St. Benedict at Auburndale is not entirely made
up of Catholics. Brittney represents the school’s philosophy
that we, as Catholics, welcome all to share in our life in Christ,
especially our students, whether they be Catholic or not. Being a
Confirmation sponsor has been a big reason why I have enjoyed
my first year at St. Benedict, since it has brought me closer to
God as well.

SBA Says Farewell to Veteran Teacher
Mademoiselle Joan Best
By Mary Lou Stauffer,
SBA English Teacher and friend of Ms. Best
“So long,
farewell,
alveidezig,
GOOD
BYE“: words
to a once
popular song
from The
Sound of
Music. The
Von Trapp
family is
leaving their
homeland
for a better,
safer life. It
is a bitter
sweet
moment!
We, at St.
Benedict,
know that feeling of happiness and sadness, as an icon of
our school bids us adieu, not for a safer life, but for the
good life that comes with retirement. Ms. Joan Best has put
in her time at SBA for the last 22 years. But she has actually
been teaching for 39 years!
Throughout the years, Joan has taught in a number of
places, experiencing the cold snow of Ohio and the warm
sun of Florida. SBA is the place she has called her “home
away from home” upon returning to her hometown of
Memphis. Imagine the number of minds she molded over
the years!
For many years, Joan was the freshman English teacher
at SBA. She set the bar for those young minds, helping
students develop literary and writing skills that would be
benefit them throughout high school, college and life. In
her own high school and college life, Joan worked as an
intern in the Tennessee government. (Her boss, I believe,
was Al Gore senior!). It is no wonder, then, that when SBA
was in need of an additional government teacher, that Joan
stepped in with the expertise necessary to teach seniors the
intricate workings of the American government!
Even so, it is the beauty of the French language that
Joan has passionately shared with everyone. In the early
years, Joan scheduled trips to France so her students could
use their newly acquired language and soak in the French
culture. Meanwhile, SBA students and faculty look forward
to important French “holidays” knowing they will reap the
benefits. Brie, éclairs and of course, “William Faulkner’s
favorite quiche” are always a part of the celebratory cuisine.
(okay, the quiche being Faulkner’s favorite may be a
stretch…but who cares? It’s delicious!)
No longer will the halls of SBA ring out with a bon jour
every morning! But, SBA wishes Joan the best (no pun
intended) as we release her to enjoy the wonderful world
of retirement. We know she will be sleeping late, traveling,
reading, working crossword puzzles, drinking tea and
experiencing all the good things retirement brings. Ainsi,
Best Mademoiselle, au revoir! Vous allez nous manquer
énormément!
Upon hearing of Ms. Best’s retirement, Auburndale and
SBA alumni share their memories and thanks –
Donna Farnsworth Crisp (Auburndale ’79) – “I have
many fond memories from Auburndale and you are certainly
high on the list of teachers….You had such a way of making
history come alive!”
Amber Reeves Williamson (SBA ’96) – "There aren’t
many educators who would sacrifice personal time to come
in before school hours and teach a French III course to
a single student, but you did exactly that …. and laid the
foundation for me to spend an unforgettable year of college
in Lille, France.”
Brad Stidham (SBA ’00) – "I loved your class with
wonderful reading assignments, enthusiasm and keen
insights you provided which surely helped me develop my
critical reading skills for my future profession as an attorney.”
Sarah Dickens Evans (SBA’01) – "I still remember
freshman English class with you crawling on the floor to act
out a part in a play; it is a part of high school I will never
forget.”
Dr. Kay Habenicht (SBA ’01) – “You truly cared about
us as people. You have touched so many of us over the
years…I am where I am today because of your hard work
17
Faculty Focus
and dedication to me. Thanks for helping me become a
doctor.”
Kevin Coll (SBA ’03) - … “as a public relations
professional and semi-professional writer I constantly hear
you in my head saying ‘passive voice, passive voice!’ One
thing is for sure, Ms. Best, you will always be remembered
by me for your passion, dedication and love for your
students.”
Amy Winkler (SBA ’07) – “Thank you for your
enthusiasm for teaching and for creatively integrating the
material we covered into our lessons. You incorporated
the material with everyday life, but also emphasized the
importance of God in our lives.”
Anna Cabe (SBA ’09) – “While our classes were
interesting, to say the least, perhaps the most I learned from
you was a desire to live life fully and purposefully as you
have. If one woman could do everything you have done and
impacted as many people as you have, what is stopping
me from following my dreams and making a difference?
And, so Ms. Best, I thank you for being an example worth
emulating…”

College Counselor and has developed a curriculum and an inclass program for students with special needs. Dr. Brock has
also taught at the University of Memphis in the Department of

Science Teacher Travels to China
SBA science teacher Michelle Wilkes (’02) was invited by
the Memphis Zoo to travel to China in May with their research
team to work with China researchers, reserve managers,
foresters, and policy makers to coordinate the next phase of
a landscape-level biodiversity conservation initiative in the
Qinling Mountains of central China. During part of her stay,
Michelle worked at a salamander farm. Michelle learned that
giant salamanders are an endangered species because they
are hunted
for medical
purposes
and for
their meat,
which is
considered
a delicacy.
The Chinese
giant
salamander
is the
largest living
amphibian
and can
reach over
1.8 meters
in length.
Here, she
holds a
16-year old
female used for breeding in captivity. Michelle follows-up this
exciting adventure to China with a summer internship at the
zoo to gain research for her master thesis in Biology.
