Right out of the gate Ford Fiesta drew worldwide raves from drivers, both on and off the track. And the accolades are bound to multiply after Mikko Hirvonen powered his Fiesta to a 1-2-3 sweep for Ford at the WRC Rally Sweden. The defending Rally Sweden champs took an overnight lead and then finished strong to capture the opening round of the 2011 World Rally Championship. Fiesta driver Ken Block flashed his mad skills as well, when he launched the race’s longest jump at over 121 feet, to claim the Colin’s Crest Award. Fiesta also made noise on this side of the pond, when Dillon Van Way won RallyCar’s Rally America Sno*Drift 2WD class to kick off the 2011 RallyCar Rally America National Championship season. Ford Fiesta has made an immediate impact on the sport and its early success this season makes it the car to beat. 2011 FIESTA ford.com Welcome to the 2011 Olympus Rally! The Olympus Rally was part of the first US Rally Championship held in 1973. It later became a World Rally Championship from 1986 - 1988. In 2009, the Rally America event moved from its original location near Olympia to Ocean Shores where it continues to utilize old logging roads around the Washington peninsula. The roads are extremely technical and covered with sharp gravel that wreck havoc to the undersides of a rally car. Conditions are sporadic along the coastline and competitors must be prepared to meet heavy rain squalls, blinding sun, and high winds in the most beautiful picturesque scenes on the Rally America National Championship. Teams can register to participate in national or regional events, or both. A national winner competes over the course of the entire event, whereas each competition day awards a single regional winner. At the national competition level, Rally America awards points to three distinctive categories at each event. The points are accumulated every round for the following categories: Overall - Rally America recognizes an overall winner at each national event that could be from any car class. Super Production - See car description in the regional section below. 2 Wheel Drive - “Spectacular” describes this category where power is effectively restricted only by the limitations of 2-wheel drive. Big turbos, big engines, and big “rooster tails” of dirt rule the 2-Wheel Drive classes. CAR CLASSES Open - This very broad class allows for a tremendous amount of technical innovation. As with all performance rally classes, the cars must retain their production based appearance, but under the hood, virtually anything goes, turbo charging and all wheel drive are absolutely essential. Open Light - A class for normally aspirated all wheel drive cars under 2.65 liters. Super Production – For modern, high performance all wheel drive vehicles with very limited modifications. Only a small step down in speed from Open Class, but a large step down in competitor cost. The primary difference between this class and PGT (see PGT description) is allowable brake modifications in Super Production enabling modern cars with large brakes to fit smaller brake systems to fit 15” gravel rally wheels and tires. Production - Performance Rally’s version of “Showroom Stock”, this class features primarily small displacement 2WD cars that are virtually unaltered, except for the safety requirements, with respect to manufacturer‘s production specifications. Production GT - Following the showroom stock foundation of Production Class, GT cars are more powerful and often are turbocharged. These all wheel drive cars are allowed adjusted engine displacements over 2.65 liters. Group 5 - The same rules as national 2 wheel drive. Group 2 - A normally aspirated, small displacement, twowheel drive class that otherwise follows the “anything goes” format of the Open and Group 5 classes, but provides excellent competition opportunities for cost sensitive competitors. Rally Explained RALLY: A SPORT LIKE NO OTHER Rally features real cars racing against the clock on closed-off sections of real roads. Events can last several days and cover hundreds of miles through rain, snow, day and night. DRIVERS Drivers must master every road surface and weather condition while possessing the stamina and concentration to perform at the highest level over long days and hundreds of miles. Rally drivers are generally considered the most talented by their peers in other forms of motorsports. CO-DRIVERS The key to a driver’s success is their co-driver. Rally drivers cannot practice the course and must rely on their co-driver to communicate instructions detailing what lies ahead on the road. The co-driver deciphers multiple notes and translates them to the driver. Rally drivers determine what speed and angle to enter each turn or crest in the road based on the co-driver’s instructions. THE CARS A rally car is the ultimate real world sports car; one that is capable of high speeds and incredible handling on any road surface. All cars must be street legal, since they traverse public roads with traffic between competitive times sections. FANS Watching rally on TV is a spectacle, but seeing it in person is an awe inspiring experience. Fans line the road, mere feet from the sliding, jumping and gravel spraying action. Fans can also freely check out the service areas where drivers and their teams repair the cars. Meeting your favorite driver and touching your favorite rally car are guaranteed! Watch Rally Safely!!! Cars are coming fast and we need everyone to follow safety rules to keep you and the competitors from unnecessary risk. When attending a rally race please watch the sport from designated spectator areas. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time WILL cancel a stage and can threaten the longevity of the entire event! • Listen to all Olympus Rally Marshals. • Do not cross barricades and banner tape. • Do not stand on outside of corners and no closer than 100 feet. • No fires and leave area cleaner than you found it. • Cars arrive approximately in 1 minute intervals. Stage is “Hot” until sweep vehicles have passed (will have yellow flashing lights). • Be wary and alert at all times! Be ready to move if a car is out of control… don’t sit down or ever turn your back to competition. • Sometimes cars will catch others on stage and their sound will be masked by the car in front of them. • Drugs, alcohol and firearms are not permitted in the forest. They can be confiscated. Photo: Andrew Snucins/WorldRallySport WE’RE EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE WHEN YOU LOOK UNDER THE HOOD Latest technology. Great financing. Rich rewards.
