The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Operatic Society’s Production of The Mikado… Performed by arrangement with Samuel French Ltd By David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr. Based on The Mikado or the Town of Titipu by W.S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Music arranged by Sue Van Colle £2.00 Notes from the FAHETGOS Chair The Story of The Mikado Well, what a time we’ve had of it, ladies and gentlemen. But I can’t possibly begin to tell you anything without first thanking our kind hosts, the hugely welcoming cast and crew of the Ruislip Operatic Society. They have worked wonders with our little band of players who, whilst not unskilled, would never have managed to pull off something like this without help. Nanki Poo, a wand’ring minstrel, arrives in the town of Titipu, in far-off Japan. He has come to seek his true love, Yum Yum, the beautiful young ward of Ko Ko, who has recently had the good fortune to be appointed to the exalted position of Lord High Executioner (Ko Ko, not Yum Yum). Imagine Nanki Poo’s distress on learning that Yum Yum is to be married, forthwith, to Ko Ko (ridiculous, of course, because he’s far too old for her and she loves Nanki Poo, but there you have it). Anyway, just as the wedding arrangements are being finalised, a missive arrives from The Mikado, who is slightly put out that no-one has been beheaded in Titipu for absolutely ages. This throws Ko Ko into a bit of a spin, but Nanki Poo comes up with a plan to give everyone what they want, which is rather complicated but seems to involve Ko Ko allowing the young lovers to marry, then executing the bridegroom after a month of marriage. Not an altogether satisfactory solution, but one that gets us to the end of Act One at least. It was the R.O.S who came to the rescue when they heard that our own wee venue had burnt down, following the Christmas Fete. (I’d made it quite clear that I didn’t think the marriage of Arctic Roll and deep-fat fryer would be a happy one but, as so often, no-one listened.) They’d be delighted, they said, to help us out, in the interests of keeping musical theatre alive in the area. And I think I can safely say they got more than they bargained for with us. If you’ve ever sat and wondered exactly what it takes to put on a show like this, then I can tell you. An enormous amount of dedication and attention to detail. Failing that, enthusiasm and stamina. Strangely enough, talent doesn’t seem to enter into it, although you’re sure to disagree when you see what we have in store for you today. Troopers, every last one of them. To finish, a tiny word of warning. A few of our cast members have late buses to catch and they will need to get to the bar in good time at the end of the show. So, as much as you might need that drink, please remember those in even greater need than yourselves and step aside, just this once. Without more ado, let’s away to Titipu… 2 Phoebe Reece Chairman Marriage preparations open the second half of the show, but you just know it’s not all going to be plain sailing as Katisha, an evil old hag, had arrived just before the interval from The Mikado’s court to claim Nanki Poo as her fiancé, because he’s actually the heir to the throne of Japan. This is news to Yum Yum, and something of a mixed blessing, as you can imagine. wnswom en ’s Th e Fa rn da le Aven ue Ho usin g Es ta teofToTh e M ika do … Gu ild Op erat ic So cie ty ’s Prod uc tio n Cast List Pooh Bah The Mikado Ko Ko Yum Yum Nanki Poo Phoebe Reece Flora McGonagall Ronnie Patterson Thelma Greenwood Angela Rowbotham Pitti Sing Peep Bo Katisha Hilda Bristow Dawn Bruce Felicity Mayhew Rev Reg Bishop David Jones Producer stonehaugh er th ea F h et n n y w Band leader G And then The Mikado arrives in pomp and splendour and Ko Ko somehow ends up marrying Katisha in order to free Nanki Poo to stay married to Yum Yum and, more importantly, alive. So, one way or another, it ends happily for nearly everybody, as it usually does with Gilbert & Sullivan. 3 MUSICAL NUMBERS ACT 1 ACT 2 Overture 1 If you want to know who we are 2 A wand’ring minstrel 3 And the brass will crash 4 Behold, the Lord High Executioner 5 I’ve got a little list 6 Comes a train of little ladies 7 Three little maids 8 So please you sir, we much regret 9 Cheap and chippy chopper 10 The threaten’d cloud has pass’d away 10a For he’s going to marry Yum-Yum 4 Chorus Nanki-Poo, Chorus Pooh-Bah, Nanki-Poo Ko-Ko, Chorus Ko-Ko, Chorus Chorus Yum-Yum, Pitti-Sing, Peep-Bo, Chorus Yum-Yum, Pitti-Sing, Peep-Bo,Pooh-Bah, Chorus Pooh-Bah, Ko-Ko Company Company 11 Braid the raven hair Chorus 12 The sun, whose rays are all ablaze Yum-Yum 13 Brightly dawns our wedding day Yum-Yum, Pitti-Sing, Peep-Bo, Nanki-Poo 14 Here’s a how-de-do Yum-Yum, Nanki-Poo, Ko-Ko 15 Miya sama, miya sama Chorus 16 Let the punishment fit the crime Mikado, Chorus 17 The flowers that bloom in the spring Nanki-Poo,Ko-Ko, Chorus 18 Willow, Titwillow Ko-Ko 19 Derry Down Derry Katisha, Ko-Ko 20 For he’s gone and married Yum-Yum Company 20aThe threaten’d cloud has passed away Company 5 NODA National Operatic & Dramatic Association ROS COMMITTEE 2009-2010 A word from the ROS Chairman PRESIDENT EMERITUS FREDERICK NEX PRESIDENT BARBARA JOHNSON I’m delighted to welcome you to this production and reassure you that, although the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild ladies seem to have taken over the ship, ROS will be wresting back the controls next week. With such talent and energy on display, it’s clear that musical theatre in the area will thrive for many years to come. For now, I invite you to play ‘spot the original dialogue’ from The Mikado and hope that Gilbert & Sullivan will forgive us all… Susan Maycraft About the Directors… Shirley Wootten has been involved in local theatre since 1987, performing in plays, musicals and pantomimes with the Kodak Theatre Group and then, from 1990, St Peter’s Players in Bushey Heath. Joining ROS in 1996, she played Ado Annie in Oklahoma!, Nickie in Sweet Charity and very nearly got a whole song to herself in Oh, What a Lovely War. She directed Outside Edge in 1994 and has alternated performance with direction ever since. When she is acting she prefers directing, and vice versa. Gillian Barrett has worked with ROS since the 1980s in different capacities, most recently as musical director for shows like Jack the Ripper, Sweeney Todd and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She has particularly enjoyed working with the young people of ROS StageWorks, and has just completed her fourth successful Summer School as Musical Director, assisting in the production of Lionel Bart’s Blitz! Other musical interests include acting as Director of Music for a local church; directing Sounds Easy, an established close-harmony group, and playing violin in orchestras and string quartets. She has had the opportunity to sing in the concert halls of Prague, New York and Paris and play in the cathedrals of Italy but this production of The Mikado has enabled her to gain a musical experience as yet unsurpassed! 7 Cast List Behind the scenes Principals Phoebe Reece Flora Thelma Angela Rev.
