One disappointment coming into the season is the loss of junior Sam Reyant, who injured his knee in football and is out for the season. "It hurts the team, but more frustrating is that we have an individual who has worked as hard as Sam who will not be able to compete." The Trojans have the core of their 2014 state tournament team returning with another year of experience after the team posted a 19-6 record last year. The team is still young, though, with only one senior on the roster. The Trojans also have a new coach. Ashley Walker, former All-State player for Shakopee and All-American player for Winona State University - is at the helm of the program. Nat Wagner, who coached the Trojans for three seasons, is now an assistant coach at Valley City State College in North Dakota. Assistants Anna (Witty) Borwege and Amy Sirek return. Coach Walker says the team won the Wright County Conference East championship and put in a lot of work in the off-season. Top returnees for the Trojans include their four captains - Taylor Koehnen, a junior catcher/infielder. “She is a selfless and smart player and extremely game smart. She’s a natural leader,” said Walker. Nichole Reed, also a junior, returns and will see time both in the pitcher’s circle and at first base. After leading the Trojans to the state tournament as a freshman pitcher, her time in the circle was limited last year due to injury. Walker said she will see action both at pitcher and first base. Brianna Ellanson, the team’s lone senior, has plenty of experience in her third season on varsity, and Taylor Hustad, a junior, is also in her third year on varsity. “She has a good arm in the outfield and is a great athlete with good leadership skills,” Walker said. The Trojans have a number of good, young athletes who will be working hard to fill spots in the lineup. “Mia Kramer has an awesome work ethic and has shown huge improvements since last season,” Walker said. Walker said the Trojans lost five seniors from last year’s team, and the squad is still working to find its identity. “We have some roles to fill in order to reach our potential,” she said. The Trojans are the defending WCC East cham- pions and look to be one of the favorites again this season. “I expect us to come out and defend the title,” Walker said. Softball has gone from three classes to four this season, and the Trojans have been placed in Section 1AAAA, with the three Rochester schools, two Lakeville schools, Farmington and Owatonna. Of that group, Farmington won the Section 1AAA title last season. Walker declined to name a favorite for the title, but says her squad should be in the running for the section title. Strong singles group should help improved tennis team The New Prague Trojan boys tennis team showed signs of improvement last season, posting a 6-16 record. Coach Robb Morris returns for his seventh year with the program, with Jill Bailey serving as his assistant. There are 26 athletes competing for spots on the team this year, and Morris believes the team should have a stronger singles lineup, which will help them improve on last years’ win total. “We don’t have a lot of experience at doubles, so we will have to work hard to de- velop combinations that are competitive,” Morris said. We hope to approach a .500 record this year and advance some of our players past the first round of sections… perhaps to see several of our individual win enough to play in the crossover round in the section tournament.” Eric Morris returns after working hard all summer and looks to be ready to win a lot of matches at No. 1 singles. Tony Larson and Alex Masberg have also improved over the summer and will give the Trojans competitive entries at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Logan Hallet gained valuable experience last year and should be a strong contender for the No. 4 singles spot. At doubles, players in the mix include Bryce Berglund, Kyle Schoenbauer, Josh Kasendorf, Vinh Klinzing, Mason Van Epps and Maurice Van Epps. Newcomers Jacob Washa, Graydon Skok and Evan Zimmer are inexperienced, but are improving rapidly and will challenge for varsity roles as the season evolves. “We had a good first week of practice,” Morris said. “The weather was cooperative and the boys are showing great energy and effort. They were able get in a few weeks of captain’s practice this spring with the good weather and came into the season a little more polished and ready to play.” Orono and Mound Westonka are the teams to beat in the Wright County Conference. Morris said the Trojans hope to challenge and finish in the upper half of the WCC this season. Minnetonka won the Section 2AA championship last season. They, along with Shakopee and Eden Prairie, are the teams to beat this season in the section. There are 75 athletes competing for the Trojan squad this season, including two school record holders (Wyatt Midtvedt in the 1,600 meters and Alex Torp in the pole vault.) The two were part of a team that placed second at the Wright County Conference East meet and had eight all-conference or honorable mention athletes. “After a strong showing at the WCC Championships last May, we will be in the hunt for a conference title this spring,” Meyer said. “We have numerous experienced athletes who are poised for success in a variety of events. We plan to be competitive as a team in Section 2AA and qualify athletes for the state meet.” The Trojans lost a number of athletes to graduation, including Josh Dvorak, who holds the school record in the 3,200, but they have plenty of reason for optimism with strong returnees. Captains are Midtvedt, Torp and Erik Skie, all seniors. Midvedt is the team’s top distance runner and narrowly missed qualifying for state last season. He is coming off a strong cross country season that saw him qualify for state and enters the seasons in top shape. Torp is one of the top athletes on the team. He just missed qualifying for state in pole vault, and also placed in the WCC meet in both hurdle events. “We will count on him for three or four events this spring,” Meyer said. Skie is the team’s top returning thrower. He was all-conference in the discus and has been an excellent leader for the team this year. The Trojans look to be especially strong in the distance events. Besides Midtvedt, they return Steve Kvam, Tony Smith and Justin Gregor, each of whom has been all-conference or honorable mention in either cross country or track. Mark Picha will be strong in the long sprints, having contributed in the 400 and 800 meters last season, while sprinters Bobby Beaudette, Josh Butler and Jordan Foley return after playing strong roles on last year’s team. James Ryburn and Cody Friedges have experience scoring varsity points in the throws and are looking forward to a strong senior season. Top juniors include Nik Arguedas (sprints and horizontal jumps), Eric Chromy (high jump, pole vault and hurdles), Noah Hummel (throws) and Jack Siegle (distance). Sophomores who will contribute are Hayden DeGross, Gaige Giles, Tucker Niedermayer, Caleb Smith and Christian Velishek. Two other seniors are expected to contribute - Austin Greenwalt returns after taking a year off from the sport and will help in hurdles, sprints and jumps, and Mitchell Delbow will likely contribute in the sprints. “We also have a very promising group of younger athletes who we expect to be important as variety contributors,” Meyer said. He said the team goal is to win the WCC championships at both the varsity and JV levels. “Individually, we hope to improve our number of all-conference athletes and qualify multiple athletes for the state meet,” he said. “More than anything, the team’s primary goal is to improve.” Hutchinson is the defending WCC East champion, and Meyer said they and Orono will be strong. “We believe we have a shot also,” he said. Shakopee won the Section 2AA crown last season and is among a group of six schools that Meyer says will be tough, along with Chaska, Mankato East, Mankato West, Buffalo and Chanhassen. “At the section meet, our biggest goal is to qualify as many relays and individuals as possible for the state meet,” Meyer said. “But we believe we have a chance to crack into the upper echelon listed above.” Boys Track Seniors Bobby Beaudette, Josh Butler, Mitchell Delbow, Jordan Foley, Cody Friedges, Austin Greenwalt, Justin Gregor, Steven Kvam, Wyatt Midtvedt, Brian Molitor, Mark Picha, James Ryburn, Erik Skie, Tony Smith, Alex Torp Juniors Nik Arguedas, John Bowman, Alex Brezina, Justin Cameron, Eric Chromy, Alex Gullickson, Noah Hummel, Brandon McMillen, Nathan Schoenbauer, Jack Siegle, Joe Taylor Sophomores Logan Aune, Cameron Bible, Hayden DeGross, Robert Devine, Liam Fife, Luke Hill, Bryce Grebner, Gaige Giles, Jack Guerrette, Wade Hartman, Ryker Huseby, Izak Jirik, Aaron Johnson, Brad Kubes, Caleb Loney, Brandon Miller, Brian Mitchell, Tucker Niedermayer, Eli Parker, Patrick Ryan, Grant Schaap, Trevor Skogerboe, Caleb Smith, Mike Stephanitis, Christian Velishek, Riley Whitcomb Freshmen Marley Aksamit, Austin Anderson, Reilly Carey, Andrew Cienciwa, Tavian Dawson, Mason DeGross, Nathan Enge, Garrett Holets, Cale Jallen, Charlie Jirik, Austin Joaquin, Ken MacDonald, Lucas Major, Andrew McGannon, Zack Morris, Karson Mulvihill, Pavinn Nheth, Trevor Prelesnik, Jackson Queen, Riley Weckman, Ryan Wetschka, Taylor Woodyard, Sam Zweber Eighth Grade Josh Anderson, Carson Davis Photo courtesy of Lifetouch Studios Members of the New Prague High School boys track and field team include (front row, left to right) Ryan Wetschka, Zach Morris, Lucas Major, Charlie Jirik, Taylor Woodyard, Riley Weckman, Brandon McMillen, Pavinn Nheth; (second row) Austin Anderson, Liam Fife, Cam Bible, Tucker Niedermayer, Mason DeGross, Jack Guerrette, Eli Parker, Riley Whitcomb, Karson Mulvihill, Aaron Johnson; (third row) Austin Joaquin, Mark Picha, John Bowman, Trevor Skogerboe, Gaige Giles, Caleb Smith, Mike Stephanitis, Grant Schaap, Trevor Prelesnik, Brian Mitchell; (fourth row) Steve Kvam, Bobby Beaudette, Christian Velishek, Robert Devine, Luke Hill, Bryce Grebner, Marley Aksamit, Izak Jirik, Cale Jallen, Caleb Loney, Cody Friedges; (fifth row) Nik Arguedas, Logan Aune, Alex Brezina, Andy McGannon, Justin Gregor, Jackson Queen, Noah Hummel, Eric Chromy, Ryker Huseby, Alex Gullickson, Wyatt Midtvedt, Hayden DeGross, Justin Cameron, Pat Ryan; (sixth row) Ken MacDonald, Mitch Delbow, Jordan Foley, Tony Smith, Jack Siegle, Wade Hartman, Austin Greenwalt, Brad Kubes, Erik Skie, Josh Butler, Alex Torp, James Ryburn and Nathan Schoenbauer. NPHS TROJANS Spring Sports | 2016 5 THE NEW PRAGUE TIMES April 7, 2016 Ledwein hopes to keep title in New Prague For the last three seasons, the State Class AAA girls individual golf champion has been from New Prague High School. Kenzie Neisen won the championship in 2013 and 2014, while Taylor Ledwein followed in Neisen’s footsteps in 2015. The Trojan senior, who has signed a letter of intent to Bradley University in Illinois, hopes to keep the title in New Prague at least one more season. Ledwein leads a group of golfers who gained valuable experience last season as they won the Wright County Conference East championship. The Trojans lost just one golfer from last year’s varsity line up and return all-conference selections Ledwein and juniors Annika DuMoulin and Sydney Guerrette. “With only losing one senior from last year, we should be favored to repeat as conference champions,” said Trojan coach Dan Holgate, now in his fourth season. He is assisted this year by former Trojan and University of Nebraska golfer Stephanie Neisen. “With Taylor, we have one of the best players in the state,” Holgate said. “She is a great positive leader and adds excitement to practice. Annika and Sydney are coming off great sophomore seasons and Taylor Hemann, Brooke Buthe and Libby Zweber played a lot of golf this past summer to improve their game. All have varsity experience and look to contribute this season.” Holgate said senior captain Paige Peterson is a positive leader who also brings varsity experience. “I am hoping she can score well enough to help us out this year,” he said. “We also have some good freshmen who will try to break into the lineup, including Sydney Brod, Hannah Bruder and Rose Kamish.” Holgate said the Trojans have had a lot of fun together, getting out on the course early in the season thanks to the weather. “For the team to have continued success, we will need to see some of the young golfers prove themselves. The competition to make the lineup should make everyone better,” the coach said. Holgate said the team’s goals are to win the conference and finish in the top three in the section tournament. “Most importantly, we just want to see improvement each week.” New Prague is the defending WCC East champion and Holgate said his squad should be the favorite. “But we should see tough competition from Hutchinson, Orono, Holy Family and Waconia.” Edina won the Section 2AAA championship last season and ran away with the state team title, winning by 27 strokes. The Hornets have been moved out of the section this year, leaving things wide open. The Trojans had a 10-11 record last season for Coach Tom Wetschka, who is in his seventh year. Assistant coaches are Sean DuBe, Don Plaisance, Tanner Oakes, Jacob Sand, Bryan Lindner, Nick Schoenecker and Nick Bowe. There are 68 players in grades 9-12 playing ball for the Trojans. Three seniors and a sophomore are the top returning players for last season. Alex Gregor returns at center field. He brings speed, athleticism and quick hands at the plate, making him a very solid starter. Taylor Lambrecht will anchor third base with his strong arm, and he looks to pick up from last season, when he led the Trojan batters. Adam Meyer gained valuable experience at both second base and pitcher, and has worked hard in the off-season, which should translate into a strong senior year. Nathan Berg returns to the lineup as well. He will be the starting shortstop and the team’s top pitcher as a sophomore. “Nathan brings a solid offensive approach at the plate as well,” Wetschka said. Wetschka said there are several others who played well during last year’s Legion season and have looked good so far in workouts. That includes Nate Simon, who will anchor the defense at catcher and also play at third and pitch. “He is a worker who will compete until the last out,” Wetschka said. Bridger Hahn and Connor Pint, both seniors, will also be part of the pitching staff. “Both bring good control and good baseball instincts to the mound,” Wetschka said. “Offensively, they will help add to our run production with strong bats.” The Trojans have enjoyed good weather and gotten in plenty of outdoor workouts. “Our intensity and attention to fundamental details has been great so far,” Wetschka said. “Our players want to improve and work at it each and every practice.” Pitching, he said, is always the key. “Our staff needs to demonstrate control and allow our defense to play for them,” he said. “Our emphasis has been on throwing low in the strike zone and mixing locations and speed.” In an early season scrimmage against Cannon Falls, Wetschka said each of the seven pitchers he used showed good control, throwing strikes and hitting their spots. “Our team goal is for everyone to be ‘all-in’,” Wetschka said. “Our varsity group needs to rely on each other and players will be asked to play multiple positions and accept individual roles. This group has demonstrated early on that they are more than willing to do what it take to get better as a team.” Hutchinson is the defending Wright County Conference East Champions. Wetschka said the Tigers will be strong again this year, with Holy Family and Waconia also looking to challenge. “We see ourselves in a position to compete for the con- The Trojan boys golf team is looking to step up a notch in the standings in both the Wright County Conference and Section 2AAA this season. Second year coach Aaron DenHartog has an inexperi- enced group, but does have one experienced leader in junior Michael Geiger. Geiger was an all-conference golfer for the Trojans last season and qualified for the State Class AAA meet. “He should be one of the Photo courtesy of Lifetouch Studios The Trojan baseball team includes (front row, left to right) Brady O’Neill, Taylor Lambrecht, Adam Meyer, Nate Simon; (second row) Nick Lehman, Bridger Hahn, Logan Reger, Frank Bartyzal, Matt Schmitz; (third row) manager Alissa Clancy, manager Sam Goetzinger, Coach Sean DuBe`, Coach Tom Wetschka, Coach Don Plaisance, manager ference title.” Baseball has gone from three to four classes this season, similar to basketball. That makes the Trojans one of the smallest schools in the big-school division. They will compete in Section 1AAAA with the two Lakeville schools (North and South), the three Rochester schools (Century, John Marshall and Mayo), Farmington and Owatonna. “This will be a solid sec- tion top to bottom,” said Wetschka, who expects North, Century and Owatonna to be the teams to beat. “Looking at our roster and our potential to play very good defense, we feel we can be in the top tier of teams as the section tournament starts on Memorial Day weekend. top players in the conference this season,” DenHartog said. “We expect him to pick up where he left off and help develop the younger talent on the team. Michael understands the time it takes to be a great golfer. He leads by example and is very calm and collected throughout his rounds.” Two sophomores and an eighth grader appear to be the favorites to join Geiger in the starting lineup. We expect to be in the top three in the conference,” DenHartog said. The coach added that with the good weather this spring, it was great to be able to swing the clubs outside on the first day of practice. “The kids were excited to play and start the golf season,” he said. DenHartog said the biggest key to improvement is to get some varsity experience. “We also need to work on eliminating penalty strokes and hitting more greens in regulation.” Waconia is the defending WCC East Champion, and should be the favorite again this season. “We should be in the top half of the conference,” DenHartog said. Edina won the Section 2AAA title last year and finished second at the state meet. The section will have a new champion this season, as the Hornets were moved out of 2AAA. DenHartog says Eden Prairie, Waconia and Mankato East will be among the favorites this year. East won last year’s State Class AA championship and moves up to Class AAA this year, returning five of six starters. The Cougars are coached by former New Prague assistant coach Nate Fuller. DenHartog said he expects his team to do well, and hopefully make it to the second day of team competition in the section, as well as qualify some players for state. Girls track team looks for a strong 2016 season The New Prague Trojan girls track and field team is hoping to improve on an impressive season this year, when they finished second in the Wright County Conference East and third at the Section True Team meet. Coach Johnny Josephson has 85 athletes competing for him this season, including a number of top athletes returning from last year’s team. In addition to their ontrack accomplishments, last year’s squad earned Gold Status Academic All-State as a team. .Josephson is in his 16th season as head coach of the team. Assistant coaches are Kari Schroeder, Travis Wick, Josh Lacey, Jake Norby, Matt Anderson, Cathy Ilkka and John Shimota. “We are looking to move up in the True Team sec- tions, vie for a spot in the True Team state meet and also win the conference championship,” Josephson said when asked about goals for the season. The Trojans have plenty of athletes who can help them achieve those goals. Top returnees include senior Maria Berg, a state participant who holds all of the school’s distance records, Josie Herrmann, a junior long sprinter who was part of the record 4x800 relay team, holds the school record in the 400 meters and is a state participant; Delany McLoone, the team’s top returning sprinter and long jumper, who just missed a state berth last year, Ashley Shimek, a hurdler who qualified for state last season, McKenzie Holgate, another hurdler and state participant, Tasha Bennett, a distance runner who was on the 4x800 relay team in state least year. Other Trojans who will contribute this season include Grace Yackly, a long sprinter and relay runner whose season was cut short by injuries last season; Jordan Anderson, one of the top throwers last season, Serena Thomas, sprints and long jump, and Randi Allar, pole vaulter, sprinter and jumper. “In the first weeks of practice, I’ve seen a lot of positive energy,” Josephson said. “We’ve got good numbers and a willingness to work hard and not complain. I see the team getting really focused on its goal, with everyone knowing what they need to do to improve the team.” Josephson said the team will need to solidify its lineup in several events, including the 400, triple jump and throws.
