October 2015 - Cheektowaga
Good
News
September, 2015
Presidents Message . . . .
A month has passed in another ZONTIAN year, and we are
already in October. I am pleased to announce that a new
member was inducted in September and another will be
inducted at our October Business meeting.
Linda DeGain, who so willingly is in her second year as editor of
the ZONTA Cheektowaga-Lancaster Newsletter, will be featuring
one or more of our members monthly. Each of our members is
very special and we would like to highlight backgrounds, careers
accomplishments and especially contributions to our club. I
appreciate them taking the time to share this information with
everyone. It helps us to know our members better, each being an
important piece in making our club successful in our mission.
New York—District 4, Area 4

The committees for this year are in place, goals are being
submitted, and work has begun. Service in many areas has
started and plans are in progress for several fundraisers. If any
member can lend a hand on any committee, please notify the
Chairperson(s) of that committee. (See Committee email).
Both International and Club by-laws require us to do our share
on committees in any way we can. Team work is important and
we hope everyone will do what they can to help.
Respectfully,
Peggy Hegierski
October Guest Speaker: Sophia Veffer
October’s Business Meeting will feature Sophia
Veffer as our guest speaker. Through her
numerous speaking engagements and as an
Executive Board member of the Holocaust
Resource Center of Buffalo and founding Director
of the Anne Frank Project, Ms. Veffer brings to
light issues of social justice through past history and current
issues. Ms. Veffer was born in Holland and was hidden during
the genocide that Adolph Hitler waged against Jews in Nazioccupied countries. As a survivor of the Nazi campaign that
resulted in the deaths of nearly six million Jews in World War II,
Ms. Veffer and other survivors’ message is brought to others
through initiatives such as the Anne Frank Project.
The Anne Frank Project uses storytelling as a
vehicle for community building, conflict
resolution, and identity exploration. Inspired by
the wisdom of Anne Frank, the project surfaces
and shares stories stifled by oppression. This
project has been carried out locally, as well as
on a national and international level and
currently involves service projects being carried
out in Rwanda.

in Tampa Florida, where they love to visit! Their
other son, Kevin, is 28 and resides locally.
"When I am not working, my husband and I love
to go bike riding or take walks on the trails at
Stiglmeier Park (which is right in our backyard).
We also love Country Music and try to take in a
concert or two every season. Other favorite
places locally include Canalside and Lewiston.
Wine tours, cruises and NASCAR races also
make our list of travel favorites!"

ANITA MOLENDA considers
herself
a very blessed
person.
She worked 38
years as a high school
biology teacher--a job she
loved the entire time. Anita
has a wonderful supportive family and very
caring friends. "I fully recognize that a large
segment of the female population is not as
lucky. I have always looked for ways to give
back and help others. When I became aware of
Zonta, an organization dedicated to serve and
make a difference, I jumped at the chance to
join."

"During my induction ceremony, I was stunned
by the fact that all members were coming up to
hug me. I probably didn’t react as graciously as
I should have, but I later reflected on the
practice and thought what a wonderful
tradition! Who wouldn’t feel welcomed after
being hugged by all members present?
Anita is looking forward to working with fellow
Zonta members to meet our common goal of
changing the lives of women and girls locally
and around the world as well as lasting peace

With the goal of leveling the playing field in the
workplace, Speaker Carl Heastie and Labor
Committee Chair Michelle Titus today announced
the Assembly's intent to pass a series of bills that
will eliminate obstacles to pay equity for women
and minorities throughout the state of New York.
Area 4 Director:
"The pay equity gap is a result of a systematic
devaluing of women and minorities in the work
place. We need to ensure equal pay for equal work.
By paving the way for full economic equality, we
will help to put more money into the pockets of
some of our most vulnerable residents and put
them on a course toward greater economic
independence," said Heastie.
Zonta Cheektowaga-Lancaster Board:
"Women in New York earn 86 percent of what
men earn and jobs traditionally held by women pay
significantly less than jobs predominantly held by
men. Women are put at an economic disadvantage
