Just a few weeks back another young
man I know was killed on his motorcycle.
It’s dangerous today on the roads. You must
be aware of your surrounding’s and you
must be on the offense and defense every
moment when riding. In riding, each moment contains the question of how to arrive
at—or how to avoid—a certain location in
space, at a certain moment in time. Typically, it hardly requires thought at all: Avoid
the pothole, turn here or there, pass the car
or wait. Watch out for the left hand turn vehicle.
Making a decision to arrive or not to
arrive, to hit or miss an apex or obstacle,
hinges on answering this question: Where
am I? Not wanting to run off a corner onto
gravel or accurately hitting your apex requires identifying a) where you are, b)
where it is, c) calculating your line, d) your
speed, and, e) how much time you have until you arrive there.
Lean angle also factors into the equation, which connects directly to how quickly or slowly your steering rate needs to be.
12
What begins as a simple concept—stay on
the road or hit an apex—becomes more
complex! It’s a testament to our ability to
control complex situations and sheds light
on both how we make mistakes and what
is needed to get it right. We need to “Stay
Alert at All Times.”
Once recognized, we instinctively
track and hold potential danger in the center
of our gaze. If the object of our fixation is in
motion, the eyes automatically target-track
it until we can determine our own and its
direction and get a bearing on velocity. The
survival instinct’s logic is impeccable: It
wants to know if our path will or will not
intersect with the gravel, your apex, another
bike, or a car. That resolution requires some
prediction: Where will I be at that moment
in time? The degree of certainty you have
with the answer bolsters or rips apart your
confidence.
Unfortunately, the evils known as target fixation and tunnel vision, our deadliest Survival Reactions (SRs), often come
in pairs. Things appear as though looking
through the wrong end of binoculars. Once
the pair attacks, in less than a heartbeat, we
can lose our depth perception and our valuable peripheral vision—both of which trash
our senses of speed and time. When speed
and time become vague, your SRs tend to
spring into action, and either freeze you in
the doubt of the moment or promote nervous, poorly timed, and unneeded corrections like stabbing the brakes or chopping
the throttle.
The business of cornering is all about
calculating the trajectory of our line’s arc,
course, and speed. Whether dealing with an
obstacle or an apex we must know where
we are and where we are going in order to
decide on any changes in speed or direction.
Steering corrections; lean angle corrections;
turning too early; any hesitations with the
throttle—these all accompany any doubt
you have in exactly where you are and
where you are headed. How well can we
track something once we are target fixated
on it, if our eyes are nervously scanning that
space, or we have tunnel vision? Not well
at all.
The solution is finding another Reference Point (RP). Once you can locate one
more object, the eyes begin to work for you,
not against you. An additional RP gives
your decision—hit it or miss it—some traction. This RP becomes a second opinion and
it provides just enough perspective to help
ward off tunnel vision and target fixation.
Take the exit of a corner where you can see
the edge of your lane. How fast and exactly where will you reach it? Aside from the
edge, we need one more RP. With it you can
rapidly determine speed, arc, and exact direction. Without it you cannot. We need a
second RP to determine where we are and
to assist with making important directional
decisions.
The result? Accurate control inputs to
the bike, less panic, and a reduced tendency to target fixate. In other words, increased
safety and control, and the peace of mind
that comes with it.

Dunn Tire: The Official
Tire Dealer Of The Buffalo Bills
By Enny Gilman
Dunn Tire loves the open roads. In
fact, Western New York and the entire
Northeast region has some of the most scenic trails in the US for motor enthusiasts to
enjoy. Spring, summer and fall each offer a
new view around every corner. Dunn Tire
is focused on ensuring vehicles are in safe
operating condition to fully
enjoy the roadways – while
delivering world-class customer service.
Dunn Tire was established in 1973 and currently has 30 retail locations
spreading across Western
& Central New York and
Northern PA. Plans for additional locations are already underway. Dunn Tire
prides their business on being locally owned and operated while employing over
500 people. World-class
customer service is the key
differentiator which has enabled Dunn Tire to thrive in
the competitive tire industry. They set themselves apart from other tire dealers with their
employees, professionalism and knowledge.
To continually improve in all aspects
of customer service, Dunn Tire invests in
their workforce and technology. Training
programs and motivational speakers help to
educate and encourage employees. Investments in the latest shop equipment, training, software, website capabilities, and a
state-of-the-art call center allow Dunn Tire
to create a positive customer experience
from all points of contact. Each of Dunn
18
Tire’s locations have their own unique personalities while maintaining core programs,
values, marketing and equipment.
In 2015, Dunn Tire launched a new
marketing strategy and rebranding effort.
Dunn Tire signed on to be the Official Tire
Dealer of the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres and Pegula Sports Entertainment also
known as “One Buffalo”. Dunn Tire’s Managing Director of Retail Operations Robert
Clark stated “our community is growing
and Dunn Tire wants to support and grow
with it”. As Buffalo and the surrounding
metro areas experience a resurgence of
growth and investment, Dunn Tire is at the
forefront of this shift. Dunn Tire is proud
to be one of only four companies to be selected to participate in the “One Buffalo”
partnership with Pegula Sports & Entertainment. Along with Dunn Tire’s ties to Pegula
Sports & Entertainment, is their partnership
with the Buffalo Bills and head coach Rex
Ryan. Last year Rex Ryan was brought on
to be Dunn Tire’s new spokesperson. New
promotional uniforms were implemented to
support Dunn Tire’s new partnership. They
featured the Buffalo Bills charging buffalo alongside the Dunn Tire logo. Recently
Rex and Rob Ryan, were invited to speak
in front of Dunn Tire’s management on how
to develop strong and motivated teams.
With an innovative
marketing strategy, which
involved new messaging
with traditional media and
strong digital marketing,
Dunn Tire launched a completely redesigned website
and developed their own
point of sale program. Dunn
Tire celebrated the opening of two new locations
and the continued growth
of their fleet account business. They also added new
services at many of their
locations; coolant flushes,
transmission flushes, power steering and fuel system services are
now offered at 25 Dunn Tire locations, with
plans to expand.
Last year, Dunn Tire introduced an
overnight drop-off service for the busy
change over tire season. This service allows
customers to drop off their vehicles before
closing hours, to have their vehicles’ all seasons or summer tires changed over to their
winter tires overnight. The program guarantees no wait time! Customers can then

Living With A Legend
Close up of Dad, Art Eggert, in his Indian shirt
(what a handsome guy!)
On his bike with spectators in backgroud.
You can’t wear out an Indian Scout,
Or its brother the Indian Chief,
They’re built like rocks to take hard knocks,
It’s the Harleys that cause the grief.
Indian Motocycle Company’s Advertisement

By Betty Eggert
The Indian motorcycle grew up during
America’s adolescent love affair with the automobile and my dad - Art Eggert - grew up with
it. Dirt track racing was his sport. The 45-cubic-inch, V-twin cylinder engine, 285 pound
Indian Scout, nicknamed “The Harley Eater”
was fast and agile. It adapted well to racing and
young men did just that. The cycle carried its
riders up to a hundred miles an hour to a finish
line over tracks scarred with potholes, strewn
with errant gravel and smeared with leaking oil
transforming every curve into a potential catastrophe. Reputations were made by winning
when risks often seemed to outweigh the rewards. Racing during the Depression years of
the 1930s, Dad’s goal was a simple one - race
and win.
Racing was not an easy sport. It demanded physical stamina and tenacity. He would
appear loose, but focused. This six-foot man
with his lean frame and long, muscular legs,
sheathed in leather boots laced up to the knees,
worked as one with his bike. He believed the
secret to winning was reducing the distance by
increasing the speed.
There was something about Art Eggert
that made you want him as a friend. You could
walk up to him knowing your handshake
would be welcome. That handshake, firm and
strong, said glad-to-meet-cha and you knew
he meant it. When he laughed, his dark brown
eyes shared the joke and the dimple in his left
cheek let you know he was enjoying the moment.
Probably Dad’s first motorcycle race was
on a hardscrabble, country road where if he
met another rider, he would challenge that rider to find out whose bike was faster.
Art Eggert needed a motorcycle for racing.
His criteria were simple enough, it had to be
dependable, easy to maintain and importantly,
affordable. Chautauqua County (NY) offered
several possibilities, a dealership in his hometown, the Westfield Bicycle and Motor-Cycle
Garage on North Portage Street and the Jamestown Cycle Shop, several towns away.
His first machine was one of imagination
and invention. Two of the leading companies
manufacturing motorcycles in the ‘30s were
Harley-Davidson and Indian. Indians had made
a name for themselves on the racing circuit
before the Depression. A new Indian sold for
close to $400. An ad in a 1940 racing program
listed a new 1939 Sport Scout with a 45 cubic
inch engine for $383. But used bikes could be
found like the 1930 Indian Scout advertised in
1936 Buffalo (NY) Evening Newspaper for the
princely sum of $80. Art had saved enough to
buy a used 1930, 101 Indian Scout. First produced in 1928, it was a light, responsive bike.
Eggert, a self-taught mechanic, rescued
the Indian Scout 101 and began building himself a bike using its 1930 frame. The Jamestown Cycle Shop became his mecca for used
parts and expert advice. Rudy Lundberg, the
store’s owner, was an enthusiastic mentor.
Eggert installed its 45-cubic inch, 750 c.c.
engine with the shift on the right hand side and
the throttle on the left. He repainted the gas
tank which leaked from a rider’s previous accident. Tanks often needed frequent repairs as
competitive flat track racing took its toll. This
gas tank proudly displayed the familiar and
now famous Indian Chief logo decal, popular
with most Indian owners. The back fender was
hinged allowing the rider to easily change the
rear wheel. The rear fender was from a 1930
Indian while the rear wheel was a 1928 vintage. The front wheel was a drop center. Art’s
“Harley Eater” was built with used parts he
traded or bought for a total of $100.00. This
mongrel began to show up at local tracks eager to challenge Indian and Harley riders alike.
This would be Art’s first Indian, but not his last.
But at age 21 in 1933; Eggert’s goal was
not a lofty one. Those first races, many at local
fairgrounds, let him test his skill and his bike.
Accidents and an occasionally death, were not
uncommon. He was racing for the prize money
to help the family pay off the mortgage on their
grape farm. These races were a springboard to
a career that lasted nearly 10 years.
Soon motorcycle clubs were born, tracks
sprung up on farms, fields and clear cut woods
in small towns across America. Local motorcycle clubs sponsored the races and in 1938
it was estimated there were over 900 active
clubs. In Western New York, the racing season was short, May to September; October and
November were included if the weather cooperated. Races were scheduled on weekends
when these men could be away from their jobs
and fans could attend. Local newspapers carried small advertisements promoting the race;
giving date, time and location. If the race was
sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association (AMA), fans knew it meant they might

Men and their Motorcycles
witness heart-pounding competition. Winners of AMA races were awarded points
which could qualify them to race in the nationals.
Eggert joined the Jamestown (NY)
Motorcycle Club. Its members soon became his biggest and most loyal fans. The
Club sponsored races on Frank Shaw’s
farm located on Big Tree and Sugar Grove
Road, known as Satan’s Bowl of Death, as
well as the Jamestown Speedway, located
on Route 380, north of Kimball Stand. It
wasn’t long before the Club bestowed the
ultimate honor, electing Eggert president.
Early Race Tracks
The early race tracks were built with the
best intentions; not by engineers, but what
would be described today as amateurs. But
what these men didn’t know about design
they knew about racing. They understood
how a track should look, its straight-away,
banked curves and measured distance. This
was not intuition, but hard learned lessons
competing on race tracks on dry days, in the
rain, in the wind. The Jamestown Speedway
was the typical oval intended for individL to R: Don Giseman (Kiatone), Carl Capella (Gowanda), George
Pichard and Art Eggert. And yes, it is the Jamestown Speedway.
THE
ual bikers racing against their
opponents. This half mile dirt
track was common, races ran
counterclockwise. Dirt was
preferred as it gave the Class
C competitors needed traction
and rules dictated only a rear
brake was permitted. There
would be other tracks nearby, but the Speedway was the
granddaddy of them all. Fans
would cheer many winners and Art Eggert
would be one of those.
He Takes Wins
His reputation spread beyond Chautauqua County and the media dubbed him,
“The Dare Devil of the Dirt Track.” He added to his trophy collection with first-place
wins at Gowanda (NY) on the race track at
the Cappella Farm and at Jamestown on the
Giseman Farm track. He raced at Warren
(PA), Ashtabula (Ohio), Hyde Park Stadium under the lights at Niagara Falls (NY)
and in the 200 mile championship race in
Belleville, Ontario, Canada.
Then 1936 was a banner year. Eggert
won his first of two District Championships and captured the National
Championship at Bond Lake at Pekin
(NY). The races were sponsored by
motorcycle clubs in Buffalo, Niagara
Falls and Lockport. It rained that day
but that did not discourage 3500 fans
from attending. One newspaper reporter described the Bond Lake track
as “One of the toughest tests for motorcycles in this part of the country
with its hairpin curves and hill climb.”
Dad on his bike with The National Championship Trophy
Art would go on to race in the first
Daytona 200 in 1937 and again in 1938.
He put together a pit crew for this Florida
race on the beach who shared greasy food
and cheap motel rooms as they trailered
Eggert’s machine south. He raced year
‘round at tracks in Georgia, Tennessee and
Alabama. World War II brought an end to
Eggert’s racing adventures as men went
into the service and the Indian Motocycle
Company turned its attention to manufacturing bikes for the U.S. Army.
Betty Eggert is the eldest daughter
of Art Eggert.
This is an excerpt from the book she is writing, Living with a Legend, about her dad’s
racing days. She invites reader’s comments
and memories of those days and Indians.
Specifically the author is looking for contact information on the Jamestown Motorcycle Club, the Cycle Shop, location of the
Geisaman farm south of Jamestown; Rex
Ridder - a member of Art Eggert’s pit crew,
and anyone from the Capella family.
The author can be reached at

Operation Purple Camp is open to military children with a
parent or guardian from any service branch. This camp aims to
help these kids experience carefree fun, teach them coping skills to
help deal with deployment related stress, and foster relationships
with other children who know exactly what they’re going through.
Pioneer Camp & Retreat Center of Angola, NY is the administrator of the local Purple Camp under the guidance of Reverend Alex
Knowles.
Each year the American Legion Riders of Orchard Park Post
567 hold a Bike Blessing/Dice Run in early June to raise funds to
support Veteran causes here in western New York. 100% of the proceeds from this event go to those causes. This year, along with Honor Flight Buffalo, Operation Purple Camp was again selected as a
recipient of those proceeds. On Saturday, August 13th, members of
the Legion Riders, braved the first day of sustained rain this year,
to ride out to Angola and meet with Rev. Knowles and present him
with a donation of $1,000.00 to benefit the Purple Camp program.
The American Legion Riders of Orchard Park Post 567 want
all those who came out to support our event back in June to know,
your generosity directly contributed to the one hundred and fifteen

Hey lady riders! We at Women on Wheels (WOW) had a hot
hot hot July 2016! July 4 – 8 we rode to the International Women on
Wheels Ride-In, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, fearlessly braving the
rain through the beautiful state of Pennsylvania. Each Wednesday
in July we met up at Ohlson’s Bakery and Café for Bike Night to
taste some tempting cupcakes along with the good company of all
our motorcycle companions.
On July 9 some of us did a quick North Towns Run to American Harley Davidon to check out the bikes. July 15 took us to
Gowanda Harley Davidson Night at Kissing Bridge to catch all the
sounds and smells of summer. Tapped into the Roar on the Shore
July 16, Canal Fest Bike Night on July 22, and rode the Finger
Lakes on July 23, stopping off at Maddie Motorsports in Dansville.
After such a busy month, we relaxed for a run up to Lake Effect Ice
Cream in Lockport.
We have members from all over Erie and Niagara County and
welcome any woman rider who wants to join our group. We have
a face to face meeting at the McKinley Mall Community Room on
the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. We organize rides

Mike with Evelyn: Cadillac
Ranch, Amarillo, Texas
roa
This road trip begins with my wife Evelyn wanting to visit New Mexico. Unable
and reluctant to stay at campgrounds anymore, I suggested riding our new H-D Trike.
Great touring machine. However, due to our
itinerary and Mother Nature’s schedule, we
picked the hottest time of year to partake
of this endeavor. Our recently retired good
friend, Mike Bucholtz asked if he may join
us. “Those who wish to follow me, I welcome with my hands.” (Thanks to Elton
John for that line from “Indian Sunset”.)
We left on a Saturday, the 9th of July
under foreboding skies. Hadn’t rained in
weeks, up until then. As we approached the
on-ramp for the I-90 in Irving, we pulled off
to don our raingear. It rained all the way to
Cleveland, Ohio. We rode approximately
500 miles to the Holiday Inn in Plainfield,
Indiana.
Day #2: Our travelling schedule was
loosely configured…up at 6:30 am, breakfast @ 7:30, on the road around 8-8:30. It
worked quite well, especially as the days
slowly got warmer. Another 500 mile day’.
(Exactly 500? You can Google map it!)
Riding through St. Louis sucked! Plain and
simple. Trying to follow directions from the
GPS and maintain eyesight with Mike following us was challenging. Yellow ribbons
on my screen spewing everywhere. One
“Big Ass” pickup truck squeezed in between
us blocking both our views. But we somehow got through, continued on for another
500 miles, on the I-44 on to Oklahoma, stop-
36
ping in Mt. Vernon, MO.
Day #3: On the I-44, mornings are getting warmer, high 80’s. Oklahoma City, typical city traffic, high 90’s. We jump on the
I-40 westbound. We are greeted with 40 - 45
mph crosswinds buffeting south to north.
Checking my mirrors, I see Mike riding with
a 20 degree list most of the time. The wind
is constantly trying to remove my helmet
and push my front wheel to a more northerly
direction. After several hours and only 350
miles, we decide to call it a day and find a
room with a hot tub and pool in Sayre, OK.
Day #4: After breakfast, we headed
west for Amarillo, our next intended stop.
Not much between Sayre OK and Amarillo,
TX. Gas stations were scarce. Rule #1. When
travelling into the southwest in the middle of
July, stay hydrated! It’s a dry heat, so you
don’t feel perspiration. I had brought extra
bottles of water and canteens. They became
‘piss-warm’ in the heat, but should a breakdown occur, with no shade, it’s life-saving.
We actually put teabags in our water bottles
as we rode. By 4 o’clock we had brewed tea.
We reached Amarillo; the temp was 110 as
we pulled in at Tripp’s Harley-Davidson.
Fortunately there was a Rodeway Inn next
door. Great people at all the H-D shops we
visited. Everyone had free water bottles and
we filled our tour bags with t-shirts and poker chips.
Day #5: Destination, Roswell, New
Mexico. We rode down highway 60, crossing the state line at Texico. It was a different

world. Hot-hot-hot. 115 degrees! Champion
H-D, another great shop with great people.
Even an alien, sans green card. Our daily schedule changed. By three o’clock, we
would find lodgings with a pool, sometimes
a spa as well. Check in, dine somewhere or
order out. (FYI-Poppa John’s Pizza is horrible) Sit in the hot tub for 20 minutes and
cool off in the pool for 40. In bed by 10.
Day #6: We had to check out the UFO
Museum in Roswell before departing. Anyone would find it interesting, regardless if
you believe in UFO’s or not. We continued
south on highway 285 to Carlsbad. Checking the air temp (these new bikes have all
the bells & whistles!) it was 117 in Carlsbad.
We continued on to the Carlsbad Caverns.
If you are 62 or older, make sure you get a
“Senior Pass” for our National Parks. You
can take a group of 3 into any and all of the
parks for free. The Caverns are something
else. As you approach, you can smell the
pungent aroma of ‘guano’. Bats, this place
has millions of them. As you descend, the
park staff is hosing down everything, from
the night before. Down-down-down, more
than 800 ft. Traversing several miles into the
largest cavern in the world. A lot of walking,
the elevator takes you back up. Back up to
the 110+ temperature above ground. Back to
Carlsbad for dinner and a bed.
Day #7: One week already and we’re
just starting our tour of New Mexico. Having received some maps and brochures last
spring helped with our planning. “Butler”

maps. These maps are designed for motorcyclists. Either touring on or off-road. They
give you tips and suggestions on where the
best riding can be found. A layout of the geography and what skills you should have and
what you’re going to see and encounter. We
left Carlsbad, heading back north to Artesia,
where we got on the westbound 82. Cloudcroft, great area up in the mountains. Temp
dropped to a cool 84. Some twisty roads, a
great change from all the “I-Beams” we’ve
been riding. Out of the mountains, back to
the warm embrace of the White Sands. Here
is where you need to stay hydrated. As we
drove past Holloman AFB, four fighter jets
where performing air maneuvers overhead.
Pretty cool thing to see. The White Sand
Dunes are impressive. They are as white as
Mr. Clean’s t-shirt. Mike noted that sand is
not a good thing for belt-drives to encounter, so we did not ride the full 8 mile sand
covered road. Stopping at the White Sands
Missile Base to view their museum. After
a 20 minute wait for a background check,
we were admitted and given passes to enter.
Mike got to see the rings on the Stinger missile, that he most probably turned himself.
Did I mention it was hot? Las Cruces was
today’s destination.
Day #8: Having got our obligatory
t-shirt and poker chip at Barnett’s H-D in
Las Cruces, the day before we were geared
up for a two day stay in Silver City. We
would check in, stay overnight, and ride
up scenic route 15 to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Birthplace of Native American hero
and warrior, Geronimo. We toured the ancient cliff dwellings, after a beautiful twisty
ride up on the 15, crossing the continental
divide, the first time. After our visit, we
headed back on the equally scenic 35, the
Trail of the Mountain Spirits. Crossing ‘the
divide’ for the second time and back to our

rooms in Silver City.
Day #9: Heading northwest on Hwy
180, arcing to the #12 to Hwy 60. Made
sure we had water and gas. Not much in between. On our way, 150 miles to the “The
Very Large Array”. If you’ve seen the movie, “Encounter” with Jodie Foster, you’ve
seen this spectacular array of radio telescopes. The VLA consists of 27 adjustable
dish-antennas, in a “Y” formation. When
fully expanded, they encompass a radius
of 22 miles. It’s flat for miles but you’re at
7,000 ft. above sea level. On to a night’s
stay in Socorro. Today we actually hit some
rain.
Day #10: Up the I-25, west on part
of the old Route 66, we bypassed Albuquerque, onto I-40 W, straight up the 371, 150
or so miles to Farmington. It’s Monday, the
H-D shop, is closed. It’s hot, got our rooms,
unpacked and headed west 75 miles to the
Four Corners. Stand in line for our turn at
the photo-op where AZ, UT, CO & NM
meet. Buy some shirts and head back for the
pool, dinner and bed.
Day #11: After breakfast, we drink
our coffee slow. Four Corners H-D opens at
9:00 am. Quick stop and then onto our last
stop in New Mexico, Aztec Ruins National
Monument. Great tour guide, very knowledgeable, a “Devil Dog” aboriginal Navajo. Met a couple from Australia, who were
impressed with our expedition. Back on the
road, head up to Colorado and Hwy 160.
Crossing the Great Divide for the 5th time,
up in the cool mountains. Heading for the
I-25 N. 20 miles short, we hit a downpour
of rain. Finding ourselves in Monte Vista,
we get a room at the “Movie Manor”, a Best
Western franchise. No pool, but they had a
drive-in movie next door. Our picture window faced the big screen, and the speaker,

Day #12: Down the road actually
had to put on my sweatshirt. A cool 65 this
morning. Left all of our leathers at home.
PETA would be proud.
We cross the I-25, take Hwy 10, the
“First Air Cavalry Memorial Highway”, to
the 71 N. This is eastern Colorado, a lot of
flat desert, straight highways and still hot.
Riding until we hit the I-76, right at the
northeast corner of Colorado crossing into
Nebraska. My wife remarked about what
little to see, in eastern CO. Both Mike and I
laughed and told her, “Wait, you’ve got two
more days of it.”
Day #13: Not much to see in Nebraska, I-80 and heading east. Weather was near
100, no rain. We’re in “going home mode”
by now. North Platte for the night.
Day #14: Getting closer to home just
had to stop at LeClaire, Iowa. Home of Mike
& Frank’s “American Pickers”. They’ve
moved to Nashville, but the original shop is
there for your t-shirts and coffee mugs, etc.
Tr
ip
Back on the I-80 to South Bend, Indiana. We
hit a down pour in Des Moines. As we near
Chicago, traffic gets heavier. Traffic comes
to a crawl and it’s 100+.
Day #15: South Bend, Indiana is only
a day’s ride to Buffalo, NY. As we head
out, temp is a cool low 90’s. Sun is shining,
cruising at a comfortable 70mph. As we near
Sandusky, the 75mph 3-lane highway becomes one lane at 35mph. WTF!!! And now
the temp is back at 100+. 90 minutes to go
10 miles. Head onto Cleveland. GPS takes
me on the “Fastest Route”. Unfortunately,
that route is under construction, and detours
us into the city. WTF again!!!
We finally got home around 6:00pm. I
spent all day Sunday, removing large grasshoppers that had been embedded in the front
end. The Trike has two large bug catchers,
on either side. 4980 miles was my total
miles, and traveling with Mike was a big
plus. Always good to travel with friends.

One Off The Bucket List
By Robin Yetman
One of our senior American Legion
riders, Bill Blair, age 82, wanted to take a
trip to Windsor Canada for the “Run to the
North Wall” for the wreath laying
during the Rededication Ceremony on Sunday July 3rd. Being a
holiday weekend, Bill, John, nor I
did not want to travel from Buffalo through the cities of Cleveland
or Detroit. So we decided to travel
through Canada on Hwy 3.
We met at the base of the
Peace Bridge at 11am Saturday,
July 2nd. Crossing the bridge with
just a short delay, we started our
journey to Windsor. It was a very
hot and sunny day but was beautifully scenic and an enjoyable
ride. We chose to stop every 75 to
90 miles for gas as John and I have
H-D Sportster’s, a bite to snack on
and to stretch our legs.
We arrived in Windsor around
7pm tired, but safe and sound at our
motel room. After we checked in we
grabbed a few drinks and spent the
evening sharing stories between us.
We were up early for a good
breakfast and on our way to the
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594
to join the other participating riders
from the USA and Canada. Five
miles from that final destination at
a stop sign, the main drive belt on
Bill’s trike snapped. I waved a police officer
over for help. We did not want to continue
on without Bill, but he insisted we go without him and he would contact us later in the
44
day. Having the officer there with Bill, him
not being alone and in good hands, John
and I reluctantly continued on. Arriving
at the Legion, so many bikes were lined
up and ready to roll. We found the other
members of our US group and were ready
to go. It was amazing to see approximately
300 bikes and lots of American and Cana-
dian flags flying proudly. We all travelled
together to the North Wall, located in Assumption Park on the Detroit River with the
Ambassador Bridge in sight. The ceremony
was very touching and the wreaths
were all so beautiful. What a turnout.
After the ceremony we heard
from Bill; his trike had been
flat-bedded to the Windsor Harley-Davidson dealer and he had
gotten a hotel room right across
the highway. Bill was OK and
said he was settled in for the night.
John and I did not go to the after
party; instead we stopped at the
Rock Bottom Bar & Grill for a bite
to eat and a beer.
We met a woman named
Brenda and told her the story of
what had happened to Bill. Brenda
insisted we go to the hotel and get
Bill. So I called Bill and told him
Brenda and I were coming to get
him. So that’s exactly what we did,
and we all went back to the Rock
to meet up with John. We all had
the best chicken wings ever, a few
beers and lots of laughs!
Then Brenda drove us all back
to the North Wall. We spent time
walking around the park. Bill did
not get to take the ride with the
pack, but he did get to the North
Wall! Brenda took Bill back to the
hotel and John and I followed on bikes.
Bill insisted John and I leave for home
right then. There was absolutely no way we

Jim Hastle
By Jim Hastie
I met Steve, the Publisher of Hard Tales Magazine at one of the
Armor Inn Bike Nights. We got to talking and I asked him if he would
like to feature my 1964 Panhead that I built, painted, and have owned
for 48 years. I also told him that I had “Slick Tom’s” (97 Rock) 1976
FXE Super Glide that I also built and painted in my shop for maintenance work, and that sealed the deal. We set a date and time. In the
meantime a longtime friend of mine, Bob Hass called me and I told
him about the photo shoot. He wanted to stop by the day of the shoot
with his 1959 Pan/Shovel he built and has owned for over 30 years.
Of course I said yes, stop on over! Steve and Nova decided to shoot
Bob’s bike too! What a great experience! What’s not to love about
three great pieces of Harley history! Ride forever!

2006. Customers arriving would be nonplussed to see Shyla toddling around the
shop with her daddy and Papa; it was a
family shop.
The move to Lancaster was instrumental in the rejuvenation of the business. When little sister Stacy wanted custom paint and fabrication on her salvaged
sportster - the Cellino and Barnes bike was
constructed. Glen, Jason and Jay’s brother
in-law Mark also began designing and constructing the Monster Chopper. The Monster Chopper was completed to its current
incarnation within a year and has a seasonal home courtesy of The Hog Farm.
Sadly, just as the shop was on a forward trajectory, tragedy struck. April 12,
2008 while jamming with the starting
line-up of HDR, Glen was rushed to the
hospital and would not return home. With
his sudden loss, the family lost its heartbeat. Jason was able to keep the shop going, barely, with the help of family. Many
people, Jason would learn later, assumed
the shop closed with the passing of Glen.
Jason halted his search for a family and focused on keeping the shop afloat.
Winter 2011, Jason booked a paint
job that would bring him closer to his
forever family. Jason, ever the promoter,
convinced the customer to come out and
hear his band HDR play. A year later, the
customer and his bassist are married. It is
at their wedding that Jason attempts his
pursuit again. How? The customer, she’s
my best friend, the bassist, his best friend
- things that are meant to be find their way.
From our first date, we were inseparable, but not just us, our family - The
Original WTF. Our foursome was blessed
with an ease many blended families do not
experience; it was magic. The synergy between Shyla and Jason expanded to include
Cooper and myself; a family was born.
Having a family was everything to Jason, and one project would link us and the
shop in a manner that brought his life full
circle - procuring Glen’s 2006 Street Glide
to paint and customize as a showpiece for
the shop. I was able to purchase the bike
and its overhaul would be the foundation to reintroduce the shop via a grand
re-opening.
We began preparing for The First Annual Glen “Widg” Widger Memorial Run. While I was busy renovating the inside
of the shop, Jason began Stage I of transforming Glen’s Street Glide. Stage I involved massive customization to alter the
lines of the bike. Jason stretched the tank,
dovetailed the side covers for a streamline
fit, modified stretched bags and elongated
the rear fender with flush mounted lights.
Jason worked metal like it was wood, his
ability to shape and curve was effortless.
Lots of swearing, but to watch, his hands
moved with the dexterity and finesse of a
master craftsman.
Cobalt blue was the color both Glen
and Jason wanted and, as soon as paint
was done, the weather beckoned to Jay
and the graphics were held off until next
season - it was time to ride. Wait, first add
the flamethrowers, then ride!
Held on May 11, 2012 the “Widg”
Run began a new era of innovation for
Jason. Business began to grow with the
help of his brother Adam, the Polish Twins
and myself. Iron Art Cycles was functioning as a family shop once again and was
becoming the success Jason and his dad
envisioned. Jason was developing a reputation independent of Glen. A bittersweet
moment, but one that paved the way for
his own legacy. Continued on next page...

Continued from previous page...
Fast forward to October 12, 2013: The
Original WTF became official at Audubon Botanical Gardens. Officiated by “Father” Dave,
celebrated by family, the wedding merely legalized what we knew in our hearts - the four
of us were forever a family.
Christmas 2015, Jason asks for some
black velvet and a blush brush; yes you read
that correctly. White gold leaf fever hit and Jason could not stand another minute planning
Stage II, it was time to act. Countless hours
of practice laying down the leaf followed by
test panels with paint and clear
were invigorating for
Jason. He had a
specific vision
for “Widg’s
Ride” Glide
and set an
impossible
schedule;

for Motorama. Two
months to use new medium, learn a new technique, tape out intricate
graphics that would need to be mirrored for
symmetry and produce a show quality finish.
Jason laid out pattern after pattern only
to pull, ball up and start again. For those of
you whom Jason frustrated with meeting
deadlines, this would be why - his internal
measurement of quality was set high. I wish
I could tell you the job was easy, but I cannot. Jason was plagued by issues with the
gold leaf, slight burning on the left rear bag
from excessive flame throwing and leaky gas
resulted in more prep than planned and we
still had a shop to run. Thanks to FB for their
timestamp, I can inform you readers with confidence that the paint, customization and other
personalization was completed on March 23,
2016 at 3:00AM - Motorama was the following day.
The effort, lack of sleep and inhalation of
a million parts per million of sanded paint was
100% worth it. Jason was awarded Top 60 and
Chris’ “Don’t Tread on Me” won best paint.
At this point, the article has become excruciating to compose - as we all know how
the story ends two months later.
So, shall we get right to it? No?
Jason was finally receiving the accolades for
his hard work, his
designs and ingenuity without the shadow of his
dad. Jason
would state
he finally felt
good enough to
stand next to his
dad. Family agreed
that Glen would indeed be
proud of him. I can tell you a group of us rode
out to Hollywood Happening in Gowanda on
June 5th. “Widg’s Ride” Glide won Best Paint
in the Allstate Insurance Ride-in Show. I’ll
share that our friend Chuck won a new bike
and, had he kept it, would not have broken
down on the way to Roar on the Shores a few
weeks later. He would not have the guilt he is
carrying today.
How about now?
July 13, 2016 Jackyl is playing at Roar

to Sturgis, again. After a quick swim, a kiss and a wave goodbye,
away he went to meet up with great friends whom we now consider family. At this point, my mind goes into slow motion as so many
want a recounting of that night but it doesn’t alter the basic facts:
Shortly after midnight on July 14, 2016, a minivan failed to
yield at Pontiac Road and Route 20. It pains me to share with you
now that the minivan was the first of two impacts. Jason was hit
a second time through a chain reaction caused by a tractor trailer.
These events resulted in taking the life of my amazing husband,
my children’s father and your friend, Jason Widger.
Simply, had Jason been a different man, his story would end
there. Another motorcycle casualty, another biker for non-riders
to point fingers at and scorn in news stories. Jason was however, a simple kind of man who resonated like the guitar he played,
the loud pipes he revved and the big block engines he loved. His
vibrations are still felt among us today and connect us while we
grieve and celebrate his life. I’d like to think he’s finding some
peace in the knowledge that his energy rumbles amongst us like
his noisy pipes.
His continuing energy is evident in the efforts made by people like Dan Ned, Dave Roberts, Chris Ocean, Steve Mineo, Wesley Schunk, Lieutenant Czora and the Evans Police Department,
Shane and Jo-Anne Davis, the Lancaster Police Department, Stanley G. Falk and the hundreds of you who have shown up and supported us. As “Father” Dave Genau said in his eulogy, “Pam, Shyla
and Coop, you did not lose a member of your family, look around,
you’ve gained hundreds.”
Family is the legacy Jason leaves with us all. A master craftsman from the start; all of you are specialized parts in his greatest
fabrication- a custom-made family.

Pennsylvania To Ohio Road Trip
By Robert Kuhn
Before we started this 5 day excursion, it rained, heavily the night before. We
questioned whether we should delay or departure. Fortunately, it stopped in the early
morn, the roads still wet when we assembled for breakfast, in East Aurora. Large
quantities of coffee consumed , a great
breakfast at ‘Charlies Diner’ , we were on
our way. First stop, was 311 miles to York , Pa.
The Harley-Davidson Plant was idle, due
to retooling for the 2017 models, but our
plans adjusted to visiting the museum and
gift shop. I purchased a book for my grandson, “ Patrick Wants to Ride” by famed motorcycling author, Cristine Sommers-Simmons. (She’s married to one of the Doobie
Brothers) And the book was autographed
by her. A great buy . Purchasing other souvenirs and such,
we had a photo-op with the hostess, and a
copy of Hard-Tales was procured and given to her. Spreading the word, then on to
Gettysburg for lunch. Did I mention it was
getting hot ? From Gettysburg, quaint little
town, we rode the “30” West into Connellsville. Beautiful twisty mountain road. Not
a big fan of interstates. The “I” stands for
“I-Beam” , too straight and boring for me. We arrived at our second motel, as it
was getting dark, greeted by John Watson
Jr. . His schedule had a delayed departure.
Found a close establishment for a late dinner and most fortunate, a breakfast diner
was even closer. Many thanks to Cindi and
Lee. They prevented my trike from roll-
52
ing away. Parking brake wasn’t set tight
enough. We headed for the “Falling Water” .
A home designed by the late Frank Lloyd
Wright for the Kaufman family. “A simple summer cottage”.If you’ve never seen
it, put it on your list of ‘things-to-do’ . The
natural waterfalls, flows through the house.
After an educational tour, which was
hot, sticky and humid, as the home did not
have AC. We saddled up and headed for
“Geneva-On-The-Lake, in Ohio. Now if you know anything about a
GPS, you will learn to “Pay Attention”. After several long miles of ignoring the constant “Recalculations”, that voice in your
screen gets irritated. When you’re 30 miles
or so from your destination and encounter
a detour, she begins her revenge. She will
tell you, very politely to make a left turn,
North. Just as the sun is setting. You are
now on a dark road, no street lights , dodging horse poop and you see something unusual. Remember, it’s dark. A small caravan
of a dozen, or more of Amish horse drawn
buggies. Apparently returning from a hard
days work in the fields. You are in the middle of Amish country, and nowhere to make
a U-turn. After a good hour at 20mph, on
poorly paved to unpaved road, you finally
find an asphalt highway. We finally arrive at our last stop, the
Surf Motel in Geneva-On-The-Lake, Ohio,
9:30 pm. This place was old school biker
heaven. A cheap hotel (price wasn’t) with
a Key West type bar next door.We stayed
two nights. The next day, our Cindi was not
feeling well, her and Lee were unable to go
and tour the local covered bridges.
Breakfast in Geneva-On-The- Lake,
you have to stop at Eddie’s Grill. The comedy routine by the staff will have you in
stitches. When you’re done with your meal,
you’ll be asked to leave, because people are
waiting.
Touring bridges is new to some of us.
We procured a map from a tourist magazine
and with Evelyn, my wife, as navigator
began our expedition. The map had 18, we
made it to 6. Sunny and windy was going to
end abruptly. Just as it began to downpour,
we found refuge in a local establishment
with 15 miles to go. Ninety minutes or so of beverages and
sandwiches, the rain stopped momentarily.
None of us had the wisdom to put on any
rain gear at this point. Down to 10 miles, the
VIEW HARD TALES ONLINE WWW.HARDTALESMAGAZINE.COM
skies opened up again. We quickly found
a Red Lobster that wasn’t floating away
, seeking shelter we waited once more.
About a half an hour. Now we donned our
gear, headed out, stopping to get some
brewed barley and hops. Having some
stronger libations on the shopping list, it
was necessary to go to a grocery-drugstore, which was down the road. (This is
Ohio) While waiting in a parking lot for
the last list of items, the meanest, darkest,
ugliest clouds rolled in. With only 5 miles
to go, we found shelter at the adjacent bank
with a covered ATM / Drive-Thru. There
we waited about an hour. Finally getting
back to our motel rooms, we parked our
bikes under the eaves and sat in conversation just outside our rooms. Last morning, we headed out sans
breakfast. Big ugly green and yellow snot
on the weather radar was headed our way.
Only 132 miles to Buffalo from here.
Stopping in Erie, Pa. at a Cracker Barrel
for breakfast on a Sunday morning. A 45
minute wait ! We skipped out, said our
good-byes and headed for home. The wife
and I stopped at Native Pride for a great
breakfast. Another road trip ending safely.

Eden Chopper Class # 17
By Steve Jones
August is here in a very warm way
- which is more than OK. with this twowheeled junkie. The heat is tough to work
in (stay hydrated) but it is awesome to ride
at midnight in Western New York in only
a T-shirt and jeans. I hope everybody has
been able to make a bit of time to get out
on their machines and feel some wind. The
Chopper Class/Club graduated some really
key members last year but Emily Cataldo
and Ben Asboth are well on their way to
achieving any and all of their goals.
54
The Chopper Class/Club has always
been about passion and commitment to a
shared goal. Not only have Emily and Ben
dedicated years to designing, learning about
and fabricating bikes, but both are athletes,
serious about academic success and have
had jobs for many years. All of our student
members have commitments both inside
and outside the confines of the school that
require time, focus and passion.
After many years of trying and getting
frustrated it became apparent to me that
this is what makes it nearly impossible for
the Class/Club to be
represented at functions throughout the
summer months. It
is ironic because you
would assume that
the students would
have more free time
over summer not less.
Once the end
of June hits they all
pick up maximum
hours at work and
for many their parents are only able to
travel, camp, and get
away over summer
break, so that is when
they hit the road. You
throw in babysitting,
all the holiday weekends, and family get
togethers and we all
know what happens,
summer is over.
Being busy is a
good thing for kids
and adults. It keeps
the mind engaged the
body moving and the
spirit goal focused.
Business, and adult
life in general, requires folks to have
the ability to multitask. By emerging
themselves in multi-
ple endeavors that each require dedication/
commitment, our students and graduates are
well on their way to successful adult lives.
For all the organizers/bikers who have invited the Class/Club to your events, thank
you very much for considering the kids and
their builds.
September is an absolutely huge month
for Eden’s Chopper Class. We will begin
meeting in the shop to discuss this years’
project and welcome new members. For
the folks who live within the Eden School
District a quick FYI- Any student in grade
7-12 is welcome to become part of the crew
regardless of age, sex, athletic/personal
obligations etc. Chopper Club welcomes
everyone regardless. After we get the ball
rolling we will quickly start focusing on
our annual fall chicken BBQ Fundraiser.
This event gives the kids an opportunity to
showcase the bikes they have helped build
over the last decade.
It is always great to see the previous
Chopper Club student members who have
grown into adults. It is almost like a family
reunion with multiple generations of Eden
Graduates discussing present life and the
glue that binds us all together, those bikes
and the experiences/lessons that they provided all of us with. Our sponsors always
show up in force especially if the weather
cooperates. It is not uncommon to see JAMIE SCHULTZ, TONAWANDA DAVE,
SCOTT FENTZKE, JEREMY KEMLER, TODD WINDER, GROTT, RUBEN
BROWN, SHAWN BISHOP, sitting down
with their families to munch on a chicken
dinner or talking with the kids.
Speaking of families, the moms, dads
and grandparents of the kids are the organizers of any and all of our fundraising
events. They don’t just handle the responsibility they dominate it. These clans are
exceptional HOELSCHERS, HAIERS,
ARMBRUSTERS, STEADS, D-BIAL’S,
BLASZS, and HENRYS. The Class/Club
simply would not exist without them! Our
fall chicken BBQ not only features WILD
BILLS (and family) awesome birds/recipe but has one hell of a Chinese auction.

Voted 1 Of The Top 10
In Western New York
It’s a great time and we are hoping to see all of you folks there.
Fundraising is everywhere but sometimes the end result is tough
to realize because of the scope of the effort. Our scope is large
but any of the money the kids make at our fundraising events is
critical because it is used for only one of three things. To help with
the costs of the build, to purchase/repair tools we need to make the
process happen in the schools shop or to offset travel costs for the
kids when we head out West.
A decade of starting and finishing the motorcycle design and
fabrication process with students ages twelve through eighteen
have taught me many things but these are the most important in
our classrooms: (sorry no common core)
1.WNY rules in the support department-You get it, enough said
2.Don’t ever underestimate today’s youth – You will be wrong
3.TEAM and WORK are not 4 letter words – Use both to get
better
4.Pride never pays the bills – No one knows or can do
everything
5.Respect is a two way street that must be earned daily
A large collective group of folks make this opportunity happen for the students year in and year out. Saramak, Smith and myself thank all of you for investing in the most important commodity this great country has. The build direction the kids elect to take
this year is TBD but I will keep you all updated as time permits.
If you have any ideas on how to make things better for the kids or
program please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Enjoy the rest of
this incredible riding season on some remote WNY roads.

THE ARTIST
An artist asked the gallery owner
if there had been any interest in her
paintings that were on display.
“Well, I have good news and bad
news,” the owner responded. “The
good news is that a gentleman noticed
your work and wondered if it would
appreciate in value after your death. I
told him it would and he bought all 10
of your paintings.”
“That’s wonderful,” the artist exclaimed. “What’s the bad news?”
“The gentleman was your doctor.”
THE FLAT TIRE
A car gets a flat tire on the Interstate one day. The lady driver eases
it over onto the shoulder of the road.
She carefully steps out of the car and
opens the trunk. She then takes out
two cardboard men, unfolds them and
stands them at the rear of the vehicle facing oncoming traffic. The lifelike
cardboard men are in trench coats and
appear naked to approaching drivers.
Not surprisingly, the traffic became snarled and backed up. It wasn’t
very long before a police car arrives.
The Officer, clearly enraged, approaches the lady of the disabled vehicle yelling, “What is going on here?”
“My car broke down, Officer” says
the woman, calmly.
“Well, what the hell are these obscene cardboard pictures doing here
by the road?!” asks the Officer.
“Well, those are my emergency
flashers!” she replies.
TO BE YOUNG AGAIN
A man walks into a drug store
with his 8-year-old son. They happen
to walk by the condom display, and the
boy asks, “What are these, Dad?”
The man matter-of-factly replies,
“Those are called condoms, son. Men
use them to have safe sex.”
“Oh I see,” replied the boys pensively. “Yes, I’ve heard of that in health
class at school.”
He looks over the display and picks
up a package of three and asks, “Why
are there three in this package.”
The dad replies, “Those are for
high-school boys. One for Friday, one
for Saturday, and one for Sunday.”
“Cool!” says the boy. He notices a
pack of six and asks “Then who are
these for?”
“Those are for college men,” the
dad answers, “Two for Friday, two for
Saturday, and two for Sunday.”
“WOW!” exclaimed the boy. “Then
who uses these?” he asks, picking up
a 12-pack.
With a sigh, the dad replied,
“Those are for married men. One for
January, one for February, one for
March...”

The produce guy looked at me and

LET THE BUYER BEWARE
A gentleman enters a restaurant
and asks the waitress what was on
special. She replied, “Today we have
lobster tales for 50 cents.”
He said, “I’ll take a dozen!”
She told him since it was a special he would have to pay in advance
which he did. Then she said, “Are you
ready for your first tale?”
He assured her he couldn’t wait.
Then she began... “Once upon a time
there was this little lobster.....”
THEY’RE BITING TODAY
“Poor Old fool,” thought the gentleman as he watched an old man trying to fish in a puddle of water outside of the bar. He decided to invite
the old man inside for a drink. As they
sipped their whiskeys, the gentleman
thought he’d humor the old man and
asked, “So how many have you caught
so far?”
The old man replied, “You’re the
eighth today.”
THE HORSE
A jogger running down a country
road is startled as a horse yells at
him, “Hey, come over here buddy!” The
jogger is stunned but runs over to
the fence where the horse is standing
and asks, “Were you talking to me?”
The horse replies, “Sure was, man
I’ve got a problem. I won the Kentucky Derby a few years ago and this
farmer bought me and now all I do
is pull a plow and I’m sick of it. Why
don’t you run up to the house and offer him $5,000 to buy me. I’ll make
you some money cause I can still run.”
The jogger thought to himself,”Boy, a talking horse!” Dollar signs
started appearing in his head. So he
runs to the house and the old farmer is sitting on the porch. The jogger
tells the farmer, “Hey man, I’ll give
you $5,000 for that old broken down
nag you’ve got in the field.”
The farmer replies, “Son, you can’t
believe anything that horse says. He’s
never even been to Kentucky.”
CAR TROUBLE
A chemical engineer, electrical
engineer, and a Microsoft engineer
are on a road trip. The car breaks
down.
The electrical engineer looks under the hood and can’t find anything
wrong.
The chemical engineer checks the
oil and fuel and can’t find anything
wrong.
The Microsoft engineer says,
“Close all the windows, and try again.”
I WIN!
A cop pulled me over and says,
“Papers.”
I turned to him and said, “Scissors. I win!” and then drove away.

One Off The Bucket List
Continued from page 44...
were leaving Bill. I said “Bill, the three of us came to this country
together and the three of us are leaving together!” So we got a
room and spent another night in Windsor.
Up early, had breakfast, and walked across the highway to the
Windsor H-D dealership before 9am. Thank goodness they do not
celebrate the Fourth of July in Canada! The crew – Steve Stone,
Geoff Campbell, Bill Larsh, and Steve Chiasson were there. Bill
explained to them what had happened, and without hesitation,
Bill’s trike was in the shop. They had a belt in stock, and they got
right to work. Seven hours later at 4pm we started our journey
home. Crossing the Peace Bridge at midnight was a breeze. Even
got to see a few fireworks and got Bill home safely.
Overall it was an awesome trip, met a lot of wonderful, caring
people, and can now take One Off The Bucket List!

Blast From The Past
By Dave Lipinski
With the Depression uncertainty in the early thirties, and the production numbers decreasing from previous years, from 17,662 models to 3700 in 1933, it
amazes me that Harley-Davidson still had time despite
senior layoffs to work on a new designed 3 speed with
reverse transmission to be used in the Servicars with the
45 ci introduced in ’33.
The Servicar or three wheeler was primarily designed to be directed towards the auto industry market,
it was supposed to be towed behind a car to deliver the
customers vehicle, when delivered the driver would unhitch the Servicar and ride back to the garage as pictured. In addition it also became useful as a utility vehicle for small businesses and mobile venders. It proved
to be particularly popular with the police departments,
which some of them still used into the 1990’s.
The Servicar had a long time span stretching from
1933 to 1973 for various reasons and many changes for
upgrades, Brakes were primarily mechanical until 1951
being converted to a master cyclindar and brake fluid
which slanged the words “juice brakes.” On early models
the springer front end was used used till the hydraulic front
end was introduced in 1958.
Mentioned in an earlier article, about the motors and
the total loss type system ( the 45 ci was the R motor) and
the introduction of the recirculating oil system for 1937,
early ’37 models used the W stamp signifing 45 ci but
the three wheeler servicars used the G stamping till 1973,
(these were located on left side of the motor stamped on
the vin casted boss below the carburetor).
Pictured is a local Erie County Sheriff dept. Servicar from 1953 wearing its original paint (police silver), faded, but all of the memories, arrests,
ball games, parades, funerals etc. linger on the surface just as the deputies
had riden it. It’s been brought to my attention from prior conversations that
there have been dozens of Servicars from the municipalities
auctioned off over the past 4 or
5 decades of various police departments, which are scattered
among the horizens of Western
New York. Through the years,
before the reality shows, many
people who have seen this bike
repeatedly said that I should
restore it. Knowing what I like
and the history behind this
machine, I’m glad I kept it in
its original format. IT HAS
CHARACTER!! Sometimes it’s
just best to leave things alone.
