This Filipino pastor finds himself having to dig deep in order to answer that question sincerely, instead of giving a haphazard, “I’m fine, thanks!” or “OK, and you?” I find myself pausing and asking how I am really doing, and I also try to absorb the presumed care and love that is underneath that question. Church, I want to share a few things about my life as your pastor, as well as the things that I think about in the large scale of things. This is in the hopes of being able to give you an idea how things are in my books, so that you can join me in offering prayers of petition and thanksgiving. I’M STRESSED, BUT MANAGING NICELY. One of our parishioners asked me, “Father, how many masses do you have this weekend?” And I said, “I have seven.” He retorted, “You had seven last week too! That’s too many masses Father…” I could tell that he was very concerned. But I also assured him that I was fine, and in fact, I really was. Stress is caused by unrealistic and unclear and nonmeasurable expectations that I put upon myself, whether presumed by me or expressed by others. But I want to assure everyone that amidst the stresses of my ministry, I have a healthy enough mind to be able to manage stress, pace myself properly, and eliminate expectations that are beyond my control. I pray, I smile and I let God do His work. God is my hope. I’M CONCERNED, BUT VERY HOPEFUL. If the bishop calls me today and asks about our churches, I would say that I am concerned about our sustainability, but very hopeful with the way many of our parishioners are responding to the reality that we face today. Launching the Team of Eight Coordinators last weekend was a very hopeful thing for me as pastor. I also appreciated how people responded to it, how many encouraged me to go on with the things that we are doing, and how people expressed their gratitude for the efforts that are being made to build our community. I have a sense that what we are seeing now is only a glimpse of the bigger picture that the Lord is trying to lead us. We are the Church and God is our hope. PRAYING EVEN MORE. After the news about the death of an 84year old priest, two nuns and two laypeople in the hands of terrorists in Normandy, France, I coiled into prayer and asked God to touch the heart of humanity one time. That is all it takes. But the spiritual battle continues between the good and the evil. This is expected when we start looking closely into the deposit of our faith. The world is changing every day, and more people are falling victim to the effects of violence and terror around us. It is not possible for us to live within our small cocoons in our churches, no not anymore. We have to be more aware of the global realities around us and do something to help, with our prayers and small efforts of peace. Thanks to our Hearts of Hope Youth Group for initiating the prayer for peace last weekend. Let’s continue to pray and plant seeds of hope around us. So, now I should ask, “How are you really doing, Church? I hope you are joyful and hopeful like me…” Trusting in God’s Guidance, Fr. Neuropeptides are tiny molecules that allow neurons to communicate. They facilitate messaging to the whole body when we are happy, sad, angry, depressed, &/or excited. The feel good neuro-transmitters (dopamine, endorphins and serotonin) are released when you flash that smile. This not only relaxes your body, but it can lower your heart rate and blood pressure. Endorphins act as a natural pain reliever. The bonus here is 100% organic and no negative side effects. So, keep smiling!! Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 31, 2016 “As with every vocation, marriage must be understood within the primary vocation to love, because humanity ‘is created in the image and likeness of God who is himself love’” (CCC, no. 1604 “Como con toda vocación, el matrimonio debe ser entendido dentro de la vocación primordial al amor, porque la humanidad ‘fue (creada) a imagen y semejanza de Dios, que es Amor’” (CIC 1604) Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7/31/16 Don’t be hard hearted. We have all heard stories of relatives who fight over an estate or a supposed inheritance. Luke recounts the Jesus parable of packing away so many possessions in order to “rest, eat, drink, be merry!” It is Jesus who said to the crowd, and says to us today: “One’s life does not consist in possessions.” On hearing Christ, the logical philosopher lays out this syllogism: 1. Guard against all greed 2. Because life does not consist of possessions 3. Therefore, give away some things, some time, some effort, some of self. What things can I give away? What time and effort can I expend to another? How will I reuse, use up, recycle? ST TERESA PARISH PAGE 6 William Shakespeare is one of the most influential writers in all of English literature. I was very much fascinated by his dramas, which always brings forth a beautiful message and an inspiring thought. Many of his dramas were part of our studies in college and the one I liked most was Macbeth. Macbeth is a dark play both literally and symbolically, the tone of the play is sinister and its central characters are evil. It tells us the story of uncontrollable greed and irresistible avarice. Because of the greediness and temptation from his wife, Macbeth killed the king of Scotland. Later he agrees that the reason for killing is his uncontrollable greed. He said, “I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition”. Like Macbeth and Lady Macbeth there are two similar characters in the bible, in the book of Kings 21. The story of Ahab, the king of Israel, and his wife Jezebel is one of extreme greed. Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel next to the palace of Ahab. Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard to be my vegetable garden. I will give you a better vineyard in exchange, or, if you prefer, I will give you its value in money.” Naboth said to Ahab, “The Lord forbid that I should give you my ancestral heritage.” Ahab went home disturbed and angry at the answer of Naboth. Lying down on his bed, he turned away and would not eat. His wife Jezebel came to him and asked him, “What is the matter with you? Why don’t you eat anything?” He explained the whole story to her and Jezebel said to him, “What a king of Israel you are! Get up! Eat and be cheerful. I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.” So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and, having sealed them with his seal, sent them to the elders and to the nobles who lived in the same city with Naboth. The content of the letter was: “Proclaim a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people. Next, set two scoundrels opposite him to accuse him: ‘You have cursed God and king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.” His fellow citizens—the elders and the nobles who dwelt in his city—did as Jezebel had ordered. They proclaimed a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people. Two scoundrels came in and sat opposite Naboth, and the scoundrels accused him in the presence of the people, “Naboth has cursed God and king.” And they led him out of the city and stoned him to death. Then they sent word to Jezebel: “Naboth has been stoned to death.” When Jezebel learned that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, “Go, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth because Naboth is no more. When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he started on his way down to the vineyard and possessed it. Greed and avarice always leads us to sin. It is a kind of idle worship. Because we are tempted to place them where God has to be placed. St. Paul says “Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry.” Col 3:5. To live happily here on earth everyone needs to learn how to be satisfied with what one has. We need to say goodbye to all that makes us greedy. We need to teach ourselves that this is enough for me. It is dangerous to be too rich and too poor. That is why the book of Proverbs says, “Give me neither poverty nor riches; Provide me only with the food I need; lest, being full, I deny you, saying, “Who is the Lord?” Or, being in want, I steal, and profane the name of my God.” (Proverb: 30:8-9) Have a good week!
