BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Kathy Good
Financially the Shelter has been successful in generating some badly
needed operating funds during the past several months. The Festival of
Wreaths held in November resulted in $10,000+ going into the general
fund. Thanks to about 40 fabulous wreaths created by local artists and
businesses, the silent and live auctions had some energetic bidding. And
one fabulous gingerbread house donated by an adoptive family from
years ago brought in over $600! Thanks to all who created and attended.
The Year End Appeal obviously tugged at some heart strings…over
$35,000 has been received to date. A hearty “Thank You” for your
generous gifts to all who have contributed to the welfare of the animals.
President
A couple of individual gifts have enabled BRHA to complete two
items of deferred maintenance. The roofs over the cat porch and portico
were replaced in mid-January; and the fencing in the rear dog runs
where volunteers walk and socialize the shelter dogs was significantly
upgraded. This area can now be used by the public as a second Meet
and Greet park. With its advancing age, the shelter always has a list of
improvements and repairs that could use attention. If you want to donate
funds for a specific purpose, contact Mgr. Eve Burnsides for options.

As always, BRHA is grateful to all its very generous donors. As the
animals say….”Woof, Meow, Chirp, Cluck, Whinny”…and whatever
rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs say. Donations enable us to keep all the
animals clean, warm, fed and healthy….thanks!!

Winter 2014
It has always bothered me. When I drive behind
or park near a pickup truck with free-moving dogs in
the bed of the truck, I get concerned, angry, worried,
fearful. What if the driver slams on the brakes and
the dog is thrown from the vehicle? What if the dog
just decides to jump out while the truck is moving
at high speed, or even when parked and decides
to wander off. What if the dog is protective of its
territory and bites someone who walks too close?
What if the dog is tethered to the truck bed on a
leash that is long enough for it to jump over but not
long enough to touch the ground? Some time ago,
I was in the parking lot at the shelter when exactly
that happened. A dog in a truck bed jumped out
and was hanging by his leash. If I hadn’t been there
at just that moment, I feel sure the dog would have
died before the owner came back outside.
• An article in thecarconnection.com entitled,
“Ford and the Humane Association Tell
Pickup Owners: Keep Dogs Out of Truck Beds”,
succinctly expresses the same concerns,
“…according to the American Humane
Association, 100,000 dogs die each year while
traveling in truck beds. Some are ejected
during accidents. Some jump out while the
vehicle is moving. Others die from debris,
low-hanging limbs and exposure. Ford
recommends:

• Keep animals inside the truck not in the truck
bed.
• If your truck has a back seat, keep your pet
there, rather than in the front seat, where (it)
can more easily be hurt or cause a distraction.
• Whenever possible, crate your dog while in the
car, or use a pet seatbelt.
• Don’t let dogs travel with their heads out the
window. Yes, they love it, but they can be
struck by debris or even fall out”.
Tripswithpets.com links to an article entitled, “The
Dangers of Dogs Riding in Pickup Truck Beds.” It
states, “…veterinarians see numerous cases of dogs
being injured because they jumped out or were
thrown from the bed of a pickup truck. If these
dogs are lucky enough to still be alive, broken legs
and joint injuries are among the most common
types of damage that they sustain and often result
in amputation…..Being in the open air traveling at
high speeds (whether their head is out the window
or they’re in the back of the truck) can likely cause
damage…..Swirling of air currents in the bed of a
truck can cause dirt, debris and insects to become
lodged in the dog’s eyes, ears, and nose……There
have been cases where dogs were thrown out of
the back of the truck while still attached and being
dragged on the road while the owner is
still driving……The HSUS notes that they
don’t know of any brand of harness that
is safe for the back of the truck. It’s best to
have the dog in the cab with you, and if
it’s an extended cab, the dog should be
restrained in the back and away from the
windshield.”
I googled dog harnesses and found
“Kurgo Tru-Fit Smart Dog Harness” and
“Ruff Rider Roadie Dog Harness”. They
work with your auto safety belt to keep
your dog safe and comfortable if you
decide to let him ride shotgun. We as
animal lovers are responsible for keeping
our pets as safe as possible. Please, folks,
don’t not let your pets ride in the back of
your pickup.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
New Volunteer Becky Lovejoy
hit the ground running when she
and her husband Doug Lorain
moved to the Bitterroot Valley from
Portland, Oregon last fall. Becky
had contacted the BRHA months
before she arrived because she
wanted get to work quickly giving
something back to the animals.
Becky’s background with
animals is extensive. She spent
eight years at the Oregon Zoo,
as a horticulture volunteer,
interpretive guide, enrichment
volunteer, zoo camp staffer and
leader of an invasive plant
removal group. She has also
worked with Guide Dogs for the
Blind and with her own certified
therapy Dog “Judy” has visited
nursing homes and a juvenile
prison.
On her initial shelter tour
with Volunteer Coordinator
Michele Craig, she noted
that some clean-up and repair
would benefit the back dog runs.
With the approval and a hearty
“Yahoo!” from Shelter Manager Eve
Burnsides, within a week of arriving
she was raking up weeds, checking
out fencing, and looking for ways
to make little improvements. Other
volunteers and staff caught the
fever, and with everyone’s help,
a week-long Fall clean-up was
RAYMOND

underway
and a cleaning/improvement
team was founded.
Other team projects included
organizing supplies and repairing,
repainting and repurposing fun
accessories for the dogs to play on.
Within a short time the physical
transformation of the shelter gave
everyone an extra spring in their
step due to the spiffed up grounds.

Other
projects will have to await
the arrival of Spring, but in the
meantime, Becky is part of the
Fund Development Committee
and continues to add to her list of
projects.

Jorja’s Journey
Two years ago I arrived at BRHA. The people who brought me
there thought they would put me down. I had very little hair and
a lot of sores due to severe allergies. I was not a happy girl. The
wonderful staff at BRHA worked with Dr. Hans Boer at Companion Pet
Clinic to determine my problem. It took many tests but they finally
found I had airborne allergies.
I spent several months at BRHA then went to Judy Paul’s foster
home. That was better but still pretty scary. I stayed there for about 5
months. No one wanted me because I was scared of everything and
everybody. I went on a few trial runs but they did not work out.
On Dec. 2, 2012, Mom and Dad came for me and took me to my
Forever Home. I was still pretty scared and did not know what to
expect. All I wanted was a place to hide. They let me find my own
way and finally I knew this was a pretty good place. I have three
beds, lots of binky’s and more love then any girl could want. Dad
says it was a great day when I found my bark. Instead of running and
hiding when someone comes to our home, I run to the door and bark.
I have been to see Dr. Rod Rosychuk, head of Dermatology at CSU
Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Ft. Collins, CO., for my allergies. I went
to Bozeman MT to see Dr. Albrecht at Gallatin Veterinary Hospital who
did an orthopaedic procedure called tibial plateau levelling osteotomy
(TPLO) on both my back knees. Now that I am out of pain, I go for lots
of walks with Mom and Dad.
To all you kids at BRHA, don’t give up hope, your Forever Home is out
there.
I want to say thank you so very much to BRHA, Dr. Boer, and Judy
Paul for all you did for me in my dark days. You gave me a second
chance at life and I will love you all forever. I am happy, cared for and
most of all loved.

BRHA gratefully acknowledges the support and generosity of so many who wish to honor the memory of
