Newsletter 28.8.15 - Mamre Anglican School
Friday 28th August 2015
From the Deputy Headmaster
Last Thursday was a wonderful night for our community as we welcomed acclaimed
author, and current Headmaster of The King’s School, Dr Tim Hawkes to Mamre. Dr
Hawkes spoke on the topic “Ten conversations you must have with your son.”
As a parent there are certain conversations we must have with our children in order
to assist them on their journey into adulthood. However, too often these
conversations don’t occur, much to the detriment of our children. Dr Hawkes
presentation was based around significant conversations to have with your sons, but
his message was equally relevant in so many ways to daughters.
Dr Hawkes shared with us the startling statistic that current research says that on
average, fathers share “18 seconds of meaningful conversations with their sons each
day.” Furthermore, many of today’s values being inculcated into our impressionable
young men are gleaned from the proliferation of social media.
We know that between the ages of 10-14, there is a 600% increase in the
testosterone levels in boys. This sudden change in a young man can leave them
feeling angry (and unable to articulate why), confused over sudden changes to their
body (deepening of voice, appearance of acne, changing of bone structure), feeling
invincible due to significant increases in muscle strength and mass, and interest in
girls. In other words, young men at this age and stage of growth and development
“Have a V8 body with a P Plate mind.”
While Dr Hawkes explored the ten types of conversations to have with your sons, it
was how to create opportunities for these conversations that was significant.
Parents are encouraged to consider the geography of their house. For example;
where do the couches in the living room point? Do they point to the television? Or
are they laid out in such a way that those sitting in them face each other? Think also
about the Kitchen table. How many times do we as families sit at the same table for a
family meal? And on these occasions, do we all sit together with electronic devices
turned off.
The car is another perfect environment for men to engage in conversations. We know
men often chat standing (or sitting) shoulder to shoulder. The car is a nonconfrontational way for fathers to communicate with their sons.
Dr Hawkes also impressed upon the audience that sons want to know they are loved
by their father. Dads often ‘show’ their love by providing. However, for sons to
advance confidently, boldly, securely, into adulthood, they must know they are loved.
Sons desire to know who they are. They want to find their identity and in the absence
of strong and significant parenting, they will find an identity via other areas.
Dr Hawkes concluded with a ‘call to arms.’ He made the statement that parenting is a
‘priority’ and we need to ‘take possession of our children.’ It is not up to the media,
the school or peers to inculcate family values, the values we want our sons to go
forthwith into the world.
It was a compelling evening.
I commend our next seminar, “Raising Girls” by Steve Biddulph to you all.
