May/June 2016 Spring &
Camp Guide issue. Deadline to book ad space is

scheduled to begin on
April 29.
This need for control has been challenged recently, and I know I’m not alone in the department full of people feeling helpless. The current
economy has left the majority of Albertans feeling like the rug has been pulled out from under
them. The for-sures in life are suddenly uncertain. That smug sense of security has been replaced with a white-knuckled grip while we
wait for the storm to pass.
It’s not the start to 2016 that we were all hoping for, but this is our March/April issue which
means springtime is near...and there is a whole
lot of hope in that.
This is our Health Break issue...an issue that is
wide open to translation. My health break might
be different than your health break, but at the
end of the day, whatever we do to nurture our
own personal health is what will benefit us all
the most.

My 2016 Health Break started with my New
Year’s resolution to “turn down the noise”. For me
this meant really pulling back from social media. Nearing the end of 2015 I had found myself
putting too much stock in what my social media
accounts reflected back to me. I’d question why
someone “liked” or didn’t “like” a post. I’d question what someone’s comment actually meant.
I’d silently criticize what I saw others doing on
social media. And I realized that this never-ending dialogue was really jamming my airways.
Turning down the noise couldn’t have come at
a better time, because as soon as I could listen
more closely to what was really happening in
my real life...not my virtual one...I was able to assess more accurately what was really going on
around me. Health issues that I had tried to shutup with my busyness were finally addressed.
The challenges my teenage daughter and preteen son were facing suddenly had the amount
of my attention that they needed, and the time
I’ve been wanting to free up for some volunteering finally found a spot in my calendar. My life is
still noisy, but that noise has a lot more clarity.
In this issue, our articles and feature fit perfectly
under a really beautiful umbrella of Health. From
the honest first-person accounts of Delaine
Dew and Trent Wilkie, to some delicious {and
healthy} recipes, tips for caring for yourself and
your relationships, to the importance of keeping
your house clean, this issue will help you take a
Health Break!
By picking up this issue of Edmonton’s Child
Magazine you’re taking a great first step in your
own personal Health Break. Some time for yourself is so important, and our hope is you’ll find
inspiration in these pages to live your life in a
healthy way, and with a renewed sense of hope
as we head into spring.
On behalf of our family here at Edmonton’s Child,
all the best until next time!

It is hard though – I’m exhausted most days and I
often feel guilty of either not spending enough time
with my daughter or not spending enough time on
myself. The elusive work/life balance sometimes
feels completely unattainable and living a healthy,
well-rounded lifestyle can appear so very far away.
Thus, I have drastically modified my workout frequency and even my definition of working out has
changed post-baby. I try not to feel guilty about

intensity, heart pumping, and sweat inducing ac-
races and half marathons. It would be nothing for
tivity where you can just feel the calories burning
me to crawl out of bed on a Saturday morning and
up. Now though, I have broadened that definition to
attend a spin class, stick around after and do some
encompass activities with less intensity, such as to-
free weights, and have a leisurely shower at home

and be ready to conquer the day at 11:30 a.m. After

think I’m going to quit being so hard on myself and
focus instead on the memories I am making with
my child instead of the calories I am not burning.
And if you find that any of this rings true for you too,
I encourage you to give yourself a break as well.
At least at this point in my daughter’s life, I want her
to have great memories of us going on weekend adventures and having fun together, especially given
that fact that I work Monday to Friday and highly
value my weekend family time. For the time being,
I’m not going to beat myself up about not being as
“fit” as I was pre-baby and not concern myself over
how I will seemingly never be able to run a 1:43
half marathon ever again, and focus more on the
fun (lower intensity) “workout” activities I am able
to do with my precious girl and soak up as much
non-work time with her as possible. As a busy parent, there just are not enough minutes in the day to

Getting
Ready
to Sell!
Team up with Thomas
for a day of family fun!
Many families choose the springtime as the time to get ready
to sell their home - and for good reason. Statistics show that
the majority of homes sell in the Edmonton area during
warmer months. It also allows for a healthy transition period during the summer months for kids to get accustomed to
their new surroundings before heading back to a new school.

PREPARING EMOTIONALLY
Remember that you must get ready not only physically to sell your home but emotionally as well. It's
an excellent idea to talk through the emotions involved with leaving your current home in search of
your new one. I have also found that sometimes the
physical work of preparing the house for sale can
also help sellers begin to adjust to their upcoming
new reality. Have an open dialogue will help you to
make the decision to list your home for sale or to
stay for a little longer.
Following these key steps will help your preparation and allow you to get excited about the big
change in your life ahead!
HOME HEALTH TIP
Want to improve your home's health and your family's as well? Make sure that you have quality air
moving through your heating & cooling systems.
Change your air filters on a regular schedule and get
your furnaces & ducting cleaned at least every two

Do you remember the pleasant feeling you had when squishing a freshly baked piece of bread between your fingers? Or
maybe I’m the only one who remembers making “bread balls”
before putting them in my mouth! (It seemed to taste better.)
The goal is to establish a curious and creative eating environment which naturally become educational moments and great food memories. At the
same time, your child also learns respect and gratitude for food while building community with family. Happy food playing, please!

The Importance

of regular carpet care
By Cory Pawliuk
TIPS FOR HAVING A WELL-KEPT CARPET
Ever heard of the saying, “Prevention is better than cure?” Preventing dirt and filth from getting
deep into the carpet in the first place is a great start for keeping it clean. Manufacturers recommend regular carpet care to keep it in tip-top shape.
CONTAIN DIRT AND GRIME AT THE FRONT DOOR.
Reduce the amount of soiling by using outside and
inside mats. Clean indoor mats by proper vacuuming of dry soil while giving outdoor mats a good
shaking and striking with a brush.
CLEAN AIR FILTERS.
Follow your manufacturer’s direction and recom-

DUST
Have you ever noticed that only a few days after
cleaning, you can see dust everywhere? So what’s
in household and office dust? The specific dust
combination in any one place differs depending on
the several factors like age of the building, location
and climate, and the number of people who live or

• Soot from smoking and cooking.

mendation on changing air filters. The more dust
and particles trapped by the filter, the less will fall
in the carpet.
ATTEND TO SPOTS AND STAINS IMMEDIATELY.
With patience and prompt attention, simple household spills can be removed. With all spills, the longer
you wait, the higher the likelihood that it will leave a
permanent stain or discoloration in the carpet.
PROFESSIONAL CARPET CLEANING.
In low-traffic areas, carpets can go 12 to 18 months
between cleanings, but high-traffic areas may need
to be professionally cleaned on a quarterly basis.
For deep carpet steam cleaning it is important to
seek out professional companies with proper certification. Technicians and businesses with certi-

Give
Your
Child
a
Healthy
Smile!
As a parent, you want the best for your child. That includes
healthy teeth and a pleasing smile. In the world of Orthodontics, we spend a great deal of time correcting malalignments
of the teeth and jaws and creating properly aligned bites,
however many parents are unaware of what to look for.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
It’s not always easy to tell when your child has an
orthodontic problem. Even teeth that look straight
may be hiding a problem bite. Here are some clues
that may indicate the need for orthodontic care:
• Early or late loss of baby teeth
• Difficulty in chewing or biting
• Breathing primarily through the mouth
• Jaws that are too far forward or back
• Thumb-sucking or forward-thrusting tongue
The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child get an orthodontic check-up
no later than age seven.
By then, your child’s teeth have developed enough
to where malalignments and subtle problems can
be detected with jaw growth and emerging teeth.
WHAT CAN BABY-TEETH TELL US?
While orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of 9 and 14, some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they’re treated early.
Your child’s baby teeth are often great predictors of
what the permanent smile will look like, and many
issues can be avoided if treated while your child is
Submitted by Signature Orthodontics
This is also an optimal time
to correct harmful habits like ‘thumb-sucking’ or a
swallow pattern with a ‘forward thrusting tongue’, both
of which can cause serious
deformities in future dental and jaw development.
still growing. The primary dentition composed of
baby-teeth serves many important functions. Not
only do baby-teeth allow us to begin eating solid
foods at an earlier age, but they also serve as place
holders and guides for the permanent teeth to follow. This is only one of the many reasons to take
great care of your child’s baby teeth because early
loss, or even delayed loss can cause the permanent
teeth to drift and move into unfavorable positions.
Next we discuss a few of the signs to look for that
may require an Orthodontist’s attention.
• Crowded, misplaced or blocked-out teeth
• Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the
mouth
• Protruding teeth
• Upper and lower teeth that don’t meet, or meet
in an abnormal way
• An unbalanced facial appearance • Grinding or clenching of the teeth
Although not everyone will require orthodontic
treatment in their lifetime, early detection of potential issues is recommended for the greatest
chance of success. Bringing your child for an orthodontic assessment can provide peace-of-mind
for a healthy start and help avoid issues that may

become problematic in the future. Now, not every
case will require early treatment as each case is
unique, just as each orthodontist may have a different approach, however professional monitoring
of growth patterns can be very beneficial, so that
