A Message
From Our President
Dear Friends of
MacDonald Training Center,
Yet another barrier to fulfilling our mission of “empowering people
with disabilities to lead the lives they choose” is about to fall…and
none to soon. During a year ripe with new successes, the progress
we have made toward the eventual, and inevitable, elimination of our
“sheltered workshops” has been stunning.
“Continued success
in the face of
adversity has become
a trademark of
MacDonald Training
Center, but this
success
would not have
been possible
without
the support of our
friends and
community
It was only last year that many of the people we serve spent days on
end waiting for the next job to come in so they could earn a little
pocket money. Our Job Club was successfully motivating many to
take the leap into competitive employment, but the job skills and
work habits that individuals were acquiring at the Center were
lacking. So, as is our nature, we decided to do something about it…
something that would fundamentally change the way we do business
while dramatically enhancing the quality of our services.
Our Business Enterprise Team was assigned the formidable task of
seeking out and establishing a long-term contractual business
relationship that would offer the individuals we serve real work, real
work skills, and ultimately, the opportunity to
pursue real careers in the community. The result…MacDonald
Training Center is now the sole packager and distributor of
SunPass transponders for the state of Florida. Our newly formed
partnership with the Department of Transportation has provided us
with the catalyst we needed to add sheltered workshops to our
rapidly growing list of barriers we have shattered.
Barriers that for decades have stood in the way of the people we
serve realizing their full potential as valued and contributing members
of our community.
Being at the top of our list of successes, the SunPass contract speaks
volumes during a year of significant accomplishments which included:
•
The expansion of MTC’s Job Club to our Plant City/James Ranch
location (thank you Brewster Technical School);
•
The expansion of our Fine Arts Studios to include sculpture
(thank you Joy McCann Family Foundation), as well as
partnerships with the Patel Conservatory and the Tampa
Museum of Art to provide a wider variety of artistic
opportunities to the people we serve;
•
The opening our the new state-of-the-art computer lab at James
Ranch (thank you Microsoft);
partners.”

FY 2007-2008 Service Highlights
MacDonald Training Center served
approximately 500 people last year
through a combination of support
services.
*****
220 individuals were served through
Employment Services.
70 individuals were served through

A dramatic increase in the number of people seeking to
move from other service providers to the Center so they
too may benefit from our enriching environment;
The honor of being recognized by the Greater Tampa
Chamber of Commerce as one of the finalists at the
annual Small Business of the Year Awards Banquet; and
The great honor of being recognized by the Tampa Bay
Business Journal as Health and Human Services Non-Profit
of the Year.
Continued success in the face of constant adversity has
become a trademark of MacDonald Training Center, but this
success would not have been possible without the support of
our friends and community partners. As we face another year
of reductions in governmental funding, and an increasingly
dysfunctional state service system, the support we derive from
these friendships and partnerships are the key to our future
and the future of the people we serve.
128 individuals participated in
GateWay Job Skills Training.
122 individuals participated in
GateWay Life Skills Training.
111 individuals participated in our
Job Club.
OUR CORE VALUES
We…
* Treat everyone with dignity and respect.
* Act in good faith and in the best interest
of the people we serve.
* Respect the opinions and choices of the
people we serve, and their families.
* Act with integrity as citizens in partner
ship with the community.
* Encourage independence by supporting
self-advocacy.
* Are accountable for meeting the
expectations of our stakeholders.
So, to those of you who have been so gracious and giving over
all of these years we make the following promise: that our
attitude will forever remain resolute in the face of ever
diminishing resources; that our actions will be aggressive in
support of our mission; and that our willingness to be
accountable for those actions will be absolute.

About the Artist
Cover Artist, Edwin Ramos
“Edwin, you are an artist”, the note read. It was just a tiny
piece of paper tucked
behind
an
unframed
canvas, part of a large
group exhibit at Tampa
International Airport. A
traveler had taken the time
to show appreciation for
the artwork created by
Edwin Ramos, an individual
developing his talent in the
MacDonald Training Center
Fine Arts Studio in Plant
City.
That little note was very
important to Edwin, as it
signaled the first recognition of his talent; an impartial
observation from a kind stranger. Since that day, he has
received a great deal more praise, as he and his art have
continued to flourish and develop.
Ten years ago, Edwin became a participant in the Life Skills
Group at the Center’s James Ranch location in Plant City.
When the Fine Arts Studio opened at the Ranch in 2006, it
quickly became apparent that Edwin was very good at
drawing. His particular love of mythology and science fiction
shone through in his work in the form of robots, planets and
fire-breathing dragons.
Three years later, his art has gently evolved into elaborate and
evocative scenes, including lush landscapes that invite the eye
to linger over hidden nooks and crannies. Most days Edwin can
be found sketching people or things he encounters at the
Ranch. “When I do art, I get my mood out on paper,” he
explains. He says that he started sketching while in high school.
His first drawing was of a truck.
Currently Edwin, now 32, lives independently in Valrico with
two housemates, but he often visits his parents on weekends.
Even there, he can usually be found with a sketchbook in his
hand.
“Edwin, you are
an artist”, the
note read...

Gateway Services
Independence is something that is important to all of us. Our
GateWay Services are designed to assist the people we serve in
preparing to achieve greater independence so that they may lead the
lives they choose. Each person has the choice of participating in a variety
of career service activities based upon individual interests and desires.
Work experiences offer instruction to develop work skills and safety
habits. An individual may choose to participate in gainful work
experiences based on interests and abilities in one or more of the
following areas: micrographics, manufacturing, sub-contracting, or
on-site service teams.
Those planning on taking their newly acquired skills into the
community to seek competitive employment are encouraged to join our
Job Club to learn the extra skills and knowledge needed to achieve
independence.

Community Living
Making decisions for yourself, being independent, having a place to
call home, and having a meaningful job are important to everyone.

providing Supported Living Services and Employment Services that
can assist persons with disabilities in achieving these goals. Whether
just a few hours a month of coaching is needed or 24-hour-a-day
support, we can customize our services to meet all needs.
Our Community Services teams of experienced supported living
coaches, supported employment coaches, and in-home support
companions are ready, willing and able to assist the people we serve
in realizing their dreams.
Our supported living coaches will work closely with each

Employment Services
With a job comes dignity, respect and a better income.
A better
income means more choices, and more choices mean greater independence. Greater independence means a more fulfilling life.
For these
reasons, we at MacDonald Training Center have committed ourselves to
being one of the premier providers of employment services in the nation.
Employment Services assists the people we serve by helping them obtain
and retain community-based competitive employment. Our supported
employment coaches work side-by-side with each individual to help him
