Where Are They Now?
From Valentine’s Baby to Survivor… Cindy C.
Cindy was born on
February 14, 1949 to
Robert “Doc” and Eda
Coleman in Davenport,
Iowa. Doc was attending
Palmer Chiropractic
College and, shortly after
he graduated the family
moved to Yorkville. Cindy
was six months old at the
time. The Colemans stayed
in Yorkville, IL, building

practice and raising a
family. Following Cindy,
her siblings Debbie then Bruce were born. In
1958, Cindy became very ill and was diagnosed
with Encephalitis, which affected her whole right
side including her speech center. She was nine
years old.
Cindy was rushed to the hospital where luckily a
brain surgeon happened to be for another case.
Surgery was performed to release the pressure
from swelling in
her brain and she
was not expected
to live through the
night. Cindy did live

and Doc. She spent
a month in a coma, with her parents by her side
the whole time. “They wanted one of us there
with her at all times, so when she woke up we
were the first thing she saw,” Eda recalls. Cindy
had a long road of recovery ahead of her but
did extremely well. At age 11, Cindy was taken
to the University of Chicago hospital where she
was seen by renowned
surgeon Dr. Sugar, who
was the first doctor
to separate conjoined
twins. “He said if she
could tie her shoes, she
can do anything,” said
Eda. A miracle? Maybe.
Blessed? Definitely.
Cindy spent a couple
of years working on
learning how to walk
and talk again, and
eventually she did.

Foundation to help
develop her speech
and communication skills. There they found out
about the Johnson School in Aurora. She went
there until she was 12 years old.
Around 1967, at age 18, Cindy joined the Open
Door family at the Otto House. Like many other
families, Eda and Doc found their place at Open
Door as well. The Colemans became active then
and still are. Doc is currently the President of the
Board, a position he has held for 30 years. Eda
was a secretary for more than 20 years for the
Parents Group, only stopping a year or so ago.

In 1976, at age 28, Cindy moved into the CLF on
Fayette Street. This was the first time she had lived
away from home. When asked if she was scared,
Cindy immediately said, “No!” Some of Cindy’s
favorite activities are going out to eat, shopping
and concerts at the fair. Cindy was an avid bowler
as well. Cindy has several hobbies including a
love of numbers and working on workbooks,
crocheting, latch hook, using a loom to make pot
holders and collecting dolls. Her mother used
to buy her workbooks on math and English, and
Cindy would work on them until they were full.
Eventually she would work on notebooks and fill
them with numbers. “She would write and write

her right arm/hand didn’t stop Cindy much. She
would latch hook wall hangings and pillows and
use a loom to make pot holders. “She made so many pot holders at one
point that every member of the family has several,” recalls Doc with a
chuckle. When we say Cindy crotchets, what we mean is that she creates
long “ropes” that she makes using only
her left hand. “She will sit and do this for
hours,” says her case manager Debbie. In
fact, the use of her left hand and loss of
use of her right prompted Debbie about 14
years ago to take Cindy to the Federated
Church to assist with the children’s sermon.
Debbie asked the children about using
their opposite hands to do things or trying
to accomplish tasks with only one hand,
like tying their shoes. Then she would ask
Cindy to do all of these things using only
her left hand. The sermon went well and
1957 – Bruce, Cindy and Debbie
the children were amazed at what Cindy
could do. “It was important to show the
children how capable people with disabilities are,” said Debbie.
When it comes to Cindy’s doll
collection, well, what can we
say? When she was young, her
grandfather was a salesman
and met a woman who was
involved in an organization for
doll collectors. He spoke to
the woman about Cindy and
she made a “plea” to collectors
to gather dolls from their own
collections that they would like
to send to Cindy. “We got so

many dolls!” said Eda. “And
that’s how it started, from my
father,” said Doc. Cindy still loves to collect dolls today.
In 2007, Cindy was
diagnosed with a
form of cancer and
underwent several
surgeries, followed
by a stay in a nursing
home for recovery
and six weeks of
daily radiation. She
pulled through it like

today. Cindy is only
one of her family
members to endure
cancer. Her mother and niece are survivors of
cancer as well. Her niece is in remission and
currently in her first year as a Special Education
teacher for the hearing impaired and working
on her Master’s Degree. Cindy recently lost one
of her caregivers from Open Door – Maxine – to
cancer. It was a sad
time for Cindy as she
was under Maxine’s
care for over six years.
1995 – Bowling.
Through everything,
Cindy maintains a
positive attitude and
has an extremely bright
smile. From what I
have been told, she
is a prankster as well,
loving to pull a good
joke on anyone! Cindy
is currently residing in
the Rose home where
she has been since it
opened in the
late 90s, with
seven other
clients. She
continues to
crotchet, collects
dolls and attends
the United
Congregational
Church in
Somonauk every
Sunday.
1995 – Cindy blowing bubbles.
“Amazing.” This
word came
to my mind after talking with Doc and Eda
Coleman. “Blessed” and “Miracles” were others. I
often say there are no accidents and that special
people are brought into this world for a reason.
Cindy and her family are definitely an example
of this. Nothing has kept them down. Cindy is
who she is due to her strength and will, the love
and commitment of her biological family and her
Open Door family, which could be considered
by some to be one and the same. If you know
Cindy, you have seen that bright smile, probably
had a joke played on you or been witness to one
of her many abilities. Cindy continues to have
close relationships with her mother and father;
Bruce; Debbie; her nieces Jennifer, Tanna and
Taryn; and her nephew Justin. Cindy was an
exceptional learner before and after her illness
and continues to thrive wherever she is and in
whatever she does. Where is Cindy now? Right
where she belongs.

In Memory of Salvador (Sal) Cisneros
Salvador (Sal) Cisneros was born on January 27, 1978 in Chicago
Heights, Illinois. At the age of ten, Sal moved to RocVale
Children’s Home in Rockford, Illinois where he resided until
November of 1999 when he became a member of the Open Door
Rehabilitation Center family. He lived at the “Pine” group home
with three other individuals. Sal passed away on August 4, 2008.
He is survived by his mother, Juanita Cisneros, and five younger
siblings – Rubin, Lupita, Ceaser, Domingo and Leonard – all of
Chicago Heights. Sal is fondly remembered for his infectious
smile, love of salty and spicy foods, and his mischievous sense
of humor. Sal’s time here on earth may have been brief, but the
hearts he touched will remember him forever.

Open Door Receives Three-Year
CARF Accreditation
In June of this year, Open Door
underwent a voluntary intensive
two-day CARF survey of its staff
and services in order to determine
their level of quality. CARF, which
stands for the Commission on Accreditation
of Rehabilitation Facilities, is a nonprofit,
independent, internationally-known organization
whose mission is to promote the quality, value
and optimal outcomes of services through a
consultative accreditation process that centers
on enhancing the lives of the persons served.
But what exactly is accreditation? Well, you
probably already know the idea of accreditation.
You may have gone to an accredited school or
received medical treatment from an accredited
hospital or clinic. Also, many of the products
and services you buy every day have been
evaluated by an impartial group for quality
and safety. For example, you may have looked
at Consumer Reports before buying a car or
household appliance. When a service provider
such as Open Door asks for CARF accreditation,
it sets a rigorous consultative process in motion.
That process includes the full resources and
experience of CARF’s organization and, most
importantly, the people who use these services.
Open Door is proud to announce that we
received the highest accreditation possible from
CARF, a three-year accreditation. In the letter
from CARF informing us of our accomplishment,
the CARF committee wrote, “This achievement is
an indication of your organization’s dedication
and commitment to improving the quality
of the lives of the persons served. Services,
personnel and documentation clearly indicate an
established pattern of practice excellence.”
Congratulations to everyone involved, for this
accomplishment is truly a team effort.
The Official Sycamore Speedway
Going to the Sycamore Speedway rated as one of the most
popular activities among the clients at Open Door this summer
– so popular that a group went every month. Each time a group
went the admission fee was generously waived. A gesture very
much appreciated. Thank-you! This allowed the individuals to
spend their money on souvenirs and concessions. Like most
Speedways there are many types of races. We attended the
Spectator Racing, which consisted of Figure 8 racing, One-onOne drags, Powder Puff, Compact and Compact Car Demos.
The race fans enjoyed watching cars crash, flags wave and the
loud noises of the engines flying by. One of the individual’s
commented, “My favorite part was when the guy over the loud
speaker said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!’ Then all
of the cars took off, leaving nothing
but dust!” All of the clients truly had
a great time and for some race fans,
maybe the thrill of a lifetime.
Saying Goodbye
Saying good-bye is never easy, especially when
it comes much too soon. After a ten-month
battle with lung cancer, Maxine Savage died on
August 1 at the age of 49. Open Door has lost
a dedicated employee, the clients have lost a
compassionate helper and the staff has lost a
valued friend.
Maxine was hired as a Residential
Aide at Open Door in July 1999. It
wasn’t long before she was promoted
to Support Aide at the Green House
(which later became the Rose House).
Maxine worked hard to make the house
a home for the eight ladies who lived
there. The home was always filled with
plenty of laughter, music and fun. Maxine viewed
her time at Open Door as much more than a
job; for her it was a labor of love and the clients
reaped the benefits.
Maxine was a quiet leader among her peers. You
would never hear her making fiery speeches or
shouting orders. Maxine led by example. She
always took the time to answer questions, lend
a hand or offer support to her co-workers. Her
NEW
TIME
dedication and loyalty to Open Door and the
clients was unparalleled.
During her ten-month battle with cancer,
she showed tremendous courage and
an unbreakable spirit. Many people
would have given up through the long
months of doctors and treatments,
but she continued to fight for as long
as her body would allow. Incredibly,
through all the difficult times she never
lost her amazing sense of humor. She
maintained until the end that she was
the lucky one because she had been
given more gifts than any person could
have hoped for.
A line I heard her use on more than one
occasion epitomized who she was as a friend.
“I’m not sure what to do or say, but you know
I’ll be there.” Her loyalty and trustworthiness
were only rivaled by her quirky sense of humor.
Maxine was truly an original. I believe I can
speak for all who knew her well; there will never
be another Maxine.

To Benefit Open Door Rehabilitation Center
My Buddy
James A. grew up with many challenges facing him. When he
came to Open Door six years ago, he had very little clothing
and continues to have very little funds. He has a sister, several
brothers with developmental disabilities, and a father who lives in
a nursing home. James now has a state guardian.
James has very limited verbal skills and happily spends much
time putting together puzzles, playing games, listening to music
and participating in Open Door activities such as working with
wood, learning math skills, coloring and passing out animal cards.
James is always ready to lend a helping hand. He especially
loves to help his girlfriend Paula. He puts her headphones on for
her and pushes the right buttons so that she can listen to CDs.
He is the consummate gentleman, always there to assist her in
putting on her sweater or jacket.
In this photo, you see James playing one
of his favorite games with a great big
smile! Who put it there? “MY BUDDY!”
What will you hear James say with his
new glasses on? “New! Good!”
James has had a difficult situation with his eyeglasses. The
glasses that public aid will fund for James are not flexible enough.
Because of this, he continues to break them beyond repair. He
has a very strong, specialized prescription and has to wait
anywhere from 6-12 weeks for the purchase of the glasses to be
approved, and sometimes they won’t approve for more than one
pair a year
Well, that all changed when “MY BUDDY” stepped in to help him
out. He purchased a very wonderful, flexible pair of glasses through the “My BUDDY” program.
Without your support, James would have been paying $10-15 a month for two years to pay them off.
Thank you! Thank you! to all of the “Buddies” who contributed to the various areas of
needs from July 1, 2008 to August 31, 2008.
