October - The Temple
October 2015 = Tishrei - Cheshvan 5776 = Volume 77/ Number 2 = established 1867 = the-temple.org The Temple FROM THE STUDY OF RABBI PETER BERG: BECOME WHO YOU ARE MEANT TO BE O ne of the great teachers of our Jewish tradition is Rabbi Zusya (born 1718 in Hanipol, died 1800). While the rabbi was on his deathbed, he famously cried at the thought of his imminent demise. Surprised by their Rabbi’s reaction, his students who were gathered around tried to calm him, saying that such a righteous man need not be afraid, for the Rabbi would be guaranteed to go straight to Heaven and has no reason to fear the outcome of his Heavenly judgment. Rabbi Zusya turned to them and explained that he did not fear that when he arrived at the Heavenly Court to account for his actions they would say to him ‘why weren’t you a Moses or why weren’t you a Rabbi Akiva?’ “I am worried,” he said “that they will say to me, why weren’t you a Rabbi Zusya?” Everyone has individual qualities and strengths that were given to us at birth. There are the unique tools that allow us to become great. By using these talents properly, in the way they were given to us to be used, we are showing appreciation for having received them – and this our way of serving God. Rabbi Zusya was an extraordinary rabbi who was fully aware of is righteous deeds, but he nevertheless feared that he did not live up to the great potential that God had given him, and for that reason he began to cry, because he knew that even someone great has the potential to be greater. The Talmud teaches: The greater a person is, the greater the challenges she faces – meaning that the greater a person is, the more opportunity she has for becoming even greater (Succah 52a). Can we really say that we are fulfilling our potential in life? Are we becoming the person that God wants us to be? Are we becoming the person that we are able to be? As we conclude Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and look forward to Sukkot and Simchat Torah – these are the questions that we must answer. When we are honest with ourselves, we will be able to work out what we are missing and where we need to head to in order to become who we were born to be. rabbi peter berg can be reached at: [email protected] TORAH & HAFTARAH: OCTOBER October 3 Chol Hamoed Exodus 33:12-34:26, Ezekiel 38:18-39:1 October 10 Bereshit Genesis 1:1-6:8, Isaiah 42:5-43:10 October 17 Noach Genesis 6:9-11:32, Numbers 28:9-15, Isaiah 66:1-24 October 24 Lech Lecha Genesis 12:1-17:27, Isaiah 40:27-41:16 October 31 Vayera Genesis 18:1-22:24, II Kings 4:1-37 WORSHIP SCHEDULE Every Friday Meditation.......................................................7:00 PM Every Saturday Torah Study.................................................... 9:00 AM Friday, October 2 Israel Bond Shabbat Worship Service w/ Guest Speaker: Prof. Jonathan Adelman....6:00 PM First Fridays: Sukkah Café............................8:30 PM Saturday, October 3 B’nei Mitzvah of Will Hutchinson & Aiden Abramowitz.................................. 10:30 AM Sunday, October 4 Simchat Torah Service w/ Consecration....5:45 PM Monday, October 5 Shemeni Atzeret/Yizkor............................. 10:30 AM Friday, October 9 Shabbat Worship Service..............................6:00 PM Saturday, October 10 Mini Shabbat Morning................................. 9:30 AM B’nei Mitzvah of Justin Zweig & Shira Balaban........................................... 10:30 AM Friday, October 16 Shabbat Worship Service w/ Guest Speaker: Rabbi Don Berlin................6:00 PM Saturday, October 17 Bat Mitzvah of Juliana Margolis............... 10:30 AM Friday, October 23 Shabbat Worship Service..............................6:00 PM YoFI Shabbat Service.....................................6:00 PM Meditation.......................................................7:00 PM Saturday, October 24 Bar Mitzvah of Sloan Baker....................... 10:30 AM Mincha Bar Mitzvah of Andrew Rovinsky.... 5:30 PM Friday, October 30 Shabbat Worship Service..............................6:00 PM Shabbat On The Road: Candler Park, Oak Grove, Sandy Springs............................6:00 PM Saturday, October 31 B’nei Mitzvah of Ella Gamson & Zachary Nadel.......................................... 10:30 AM For a full listing of services & other programs: WWW.THE-TEMPLE.ORG page 1 Lifecycles&Occasions B’nei Mitzvah OCTOBER 3 OCTOBER 3 OCTOBER 10 OCTOBER 10 OCTOBER 17 WILL HUTCHINSON AIDEN ABRAMOWITZ JUSTIN ZWEIG SHIRA BALABAN JULIANA R. Engage @ The Temple Torah Study: A Source of Inspiration and Spiritual Nourishment Saturday Mornings • 9:00-10:15 AM The Torah is a body of teachings that instructs us how to live our lives. Every Saturday morning from 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM a diverse group of approximately 30 people meet at The Temple to study the weekly Torah portion. The Temple rabbis rotate in leading the Torah study. There are more discussions by the participants than instructions by the rabbis. Each week I am inspired by Torah and the thoughtful comments of the rabbis and my classmates. I like to write some of the memorable comments in the margins of my personal Torah. I have a collection of wise comments made by Rabbi Salkin, Rabbi Berlin, Rabbi Reeves, the current rabbis and my classmates. The Torah study group is small “congregation within the congregation”. We have grown to know and respect each other like a second family. Please join us any Saturday morning for coffee and experience Torah study. — Ben Shapiro First Fridays Friday, October 2 • 8:00 PM Join Rabbi David Spinrad and musicians Sammy Rosenbaum, Eli Sperling, and Samara Katz for an evening of soulful spirituality as we come together at 8:30 PM on Friday, October 2nd for an evening of prayer and music. We will also be gathering before services at 8:00 PM on the front lawn of The Temple to enjoy some Sukkah Cafe. First Fridays has become known for fun socializing and for services that feel inclusive for people of all levels of familiarity and comfort with the service and with Judaism and is a time to unwind from the week with conversation, inspiring music and meaningful words of prayer. To RSVP, email our Engagement Associate Summer Jacobs: [email protected] and for questions for more information email Rabbi Spinrad: [email protected]. Follow us on Twitter: @FirstFridaysATL Library News We now have a library annex located in the coffee shop. You will find books to peruse while sipping your coffee—books that cover a variety of topics. To check one out, just fill out the card and place it in the basket on the shelf. When you are finished, return the book to the Library/Media Center. Stop in either location to explore books on many different subjects. The Library/Media Center is always open. Temple Book Club Tuesday, October 13 • 7:30 PM In October, we will be reading The Betrayers by David Bezmogis. These incandescent pages give us one momentous day in the life of Baruch Kotler, a disgraced Israeli politician. This engrossing political novel of morals and dilemma was the winner of the National Jewish Book Award. The book will be facilitated by Gary Hirsch. We look forward to seeing you there. Way to go Sam and David! S HA B BAT G U E S T S P E A K E R S FRIDAY, O CTOBER 2: PROFESSOR JONATHAN ADELMAN Development Corporation for Israel/Israel Bonds will be sponsoring Friday night services at The Temple on October 2nd. Guest speaker will be Professor Jonathan Adelman of Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. The Israel Bonds organization, established in 1951, has provided over $38 billion in funds worldwide helping strengthen every aspect of Israel’s economy. Israel has repaid principal and interest on Israel Bonds on time and in full. Following back-to-back years (2013-14) in which Israel Bonds exceeded $1.1 billion in US sales alone, we are on track to do it again in 2015 domestic sales. Significantly, these sales comprise a wide spectrum of investors, including individuals, states and municipalities, financial institutions, endowment funds, universities and more. Despite their diversity, each Israel bond investor shares the commonality of acquiring a strong investment, helping Israel’s economy remain resilient and delivering a resounding “NO” to those who look to undermine Israel’s success with calls for boycotts, divestment and sanctions. FRIDAY, O CTOBER 16: RABBI D ON BERLIN page 6 Welcome back to The Temple, Rabbi Don Berlin. Join us at our 6:00 PM service to greet our Interim Senior Rabbi (2008-2009) as Rabbi Berlin delivers the sermon, “Proof and Promise—50 Years of Reform Judaism” at our Friday evening service. 24th Edition of the Book Festival of the MJCCA and The Temple Present: DENNIS ROSS, Doomed to Succeed: The US – Israeli Relationship from Truman to Obama In Conversation with Dr. Kenneth Stein, William E. Schatten Professor of Contemporary Middle Eastern History, Politicial Science, and Israeli Studies, Emory University Monday, November 9 • 7:30 PM at The Temple • Sponsored by Greenberg Traurig FREE TO THE COMMUNITY (RSVP REQUIRED) For almost three decades, Ambassador Dennis Ross has been a leading figure in the diplomatic world of Soviet and Middle East policy. During the Reagan administration, he served as director of Near East and South Asian affairs on the National Security Council staff and as deputy director of the Pentagon’s Office of Net Assessment. In the first Bush administration, he served as director of the State Department’s Policy Planning Office, where he played a prominent role in developing U.S. policy toward the former Soviet Union, the unification of Germany and its integration into NATO, arms control negotiations, and the development of the 1991 Gulf War Coalition. Under President Clinton, he was a special Middle East coordinator. As a point person in America’s ongoing role in the Middle Eastern peace process, Ross was instrumental in assisting Israelis and Palestinians in reaching the 1995 Interim Agreement. He successfully brokered the Hebron Accord in 1997, facilitated the 1994 Israel-Jordan peace treaty, and worked to bring Israel and Syria together. Speaking of Ross, President Clinton said “No one worked harder for peace than Dennis. He gave it everything he had and served our nation very well.” Now, Ross provides a comprehensive account of America’s complicated history with Israel in his new book, Doomed to Succeed: The U.S.-Israel Relationship from Truman to Obama. Beginning with Israel’s inception and working forward administration by administration, Ross chronicles the tense back-and-forth that has existed between our two countries for nearly three-quarters of a century. In clear, direct prose, Ross describes how often America was forced to view Israel as a chess piece in a larger game with forces like the Soviet Union, pan-Arabism, and post-9/11 anti-terror strategy. Indeed, Ross shows how the study of America’s bond with Israel can serve as an outline of American foreign policy in general from 1948 to present. Written with historical precision and exhaustive detail, Doomed to Succeed is a timely, important, and necessary recounting of one of our most significant alliances. Bush, Bill Clinton’s Middle East Peace envoy, and a special assistant to the president under Barack Obama. page 7 Connect with The Temple connect Temple Connect Groups are the best way to get to know a small group of people well.
